The 4th Annual

Colin’s Hope Classic Golf Tournament Submitted by Carrie Wilkin

The 4th Annual Colin’s Hope Classic golf tournament was held on April 18th at the beautiful Flintrock Falls golf course in Lakeway. This event is always a special one for the Austin-based, non-profit foundation, as it was the very first event that Colin’s Hope hosted after setting out on its mission to raise water safety awareness to prevent childhood drownings. This year as every year since its inception many loyal golfers teed up to spend their day in support of the charity’s mission, kicking off swim season with a great reminder of how to swim safely and enjoy the water this summer!! Today, nearly four years after the founding of Colin’s Hope, many ask about the “success” or “impact” of the foundation. Defining “success” with a vision like that of Colin’s Hope: a world where children do not drown, can be a challenge…when the loss of even one child’s life is too many. However, the impact on our community that Colin’s Hope has had is something that can begin to be measured now, and its accomplishments are many! Colin’s Hope has become the face of drowning prevention in the Austinarea and has made a name for itself in Central Texas, statewide and even nationally. This year the foundation received the Member Agency of the Year award and the Innovative Program of the Year award from Safe Kids Austin for its drowning prevention work. Colin’s Hope also co-chairs the Central Texas Water Safety Coalition Board and holds a place on the Safe Kids Austin Board. The charity’s message that “drowning is preventable” can be found all over our community during swim season, including Reagan billboards, more than 80 Peel, Inc. community newsletters, radio spots and numerous local TV interviews. Colin’s Hope hosts several events that are now well-known and much anticipated, including the Kids’ Triathlon and the Got2Swim open water swim in Lake Austin. These events draw lots of publicity and connect the foundation with its target audience: children, their parents and the swimming community. Olympic swimmers Brendan Hansen, Garrett Weber-Gale and Kathleen Hersey continue to support Colin’s Hope and, together with Nitro Swimming, hosted a Colin’s Hope Got2Swim clinic Copyright © 2012 Peel, Inc.

in January to both raise funds and teach children better ways to swim safely. The foundation’s list of community, statewide and national partners has grown exponentially. Colin’s Hope grows stronger, smarter and more influential through its partnerships with organizations like Schlitterbahn, Pool Safely, Safe Kids, the YMCA, The Expedition School, World Water Park Association and the City of Austin, just to name a few. But there is no better way to see the impact of Colin’s Hope than through its annual Water Safety Walk. In its first year in 2010, Colin’s Hope distributed 5,000 water safety packets containing information on water safety and drowning prevention, including its 7 key water safety tips and a Water Guardian badge. In 2010, 50,000 packets were distributed, and the 2012 Water Safety Walk will reach 75,000 homes! Distribution of the packets has been focused in the zip codes identified as having the highest incidence of drownings in the Austin area, and, since the information was delivered, the number of drowning deaths in many of these areas has DROPPED TO ZERO! Now THAT feels like success…because if even one child is safe and alive today because of its efforts and the impact that Colin’s Hope has made, isn’t that exactly what the foundation set out to do? Fortunately, they get to keep on doing just that…protecting children and keeping them safer in the water…through the support of the golfers, sponsors, prize donors and volunteers who generously donated time, energy and money to make the 4th Annual Colin’s Hope Classic another tremendous success. Prizes were awarded for the top 3 scoring teams, as well as for longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin, however, the real winners on this day were the children and families Colin’s Hope works to protect! The founders’ son, Colin Holst, drowned in an Austin-area public pool in 2008 at the age of 4. Colin’s Hope was started in his honor and, on tournament day, he was remembered time and again… as everyone agreed it was, as Colin used to say, “the best day ever!” Lakeway Voice - May 2012

Co-Grand Marshals Take Center Stage for July 4th Celebration By: Shelly Ansbach It’s been said many times that people who enter the priesthood respond to a special “calling.” Yet you seldom hear about a “military calling.” Nevertheless military personnel respond to a higher calling when they pledge to serve their country and preserve the freedoms we all enjoy. Many even make the ultimate sacrifice. And so it is with great pride that I introduce you to our Co-Grand Marshals, Major Shelly Mendieta and her husband Major Michael Mendieta leading Lakeway’s thirty-seventh annual fourth of July Parade and Celebration. Major Shelly Mendieta serves in the Air Force, and is currently attending Air Command and Staff College for Professional Military Education. She will return to an operational F-15E squadron when she finishes her re-qualification class in September. She was also the narrator for the F-15E flight demonstration team based out of Seymour Johnson AFB. She is a native Texan, born in Amarillo. While in high school she was selected for a USAF ROTC scholarship and enrolled in UT-Austin. She was 22 yrs old when she graduated college with a bachelor’s in biology and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the Air Force. When asked why she chose a career in the military, she replied, “It was something I needed to do to give back. Also, during my first year in college, the military opened up combat aircraft to women and that’s when I decided to try to fly. I love what I do, I love the mission.” As an F-15E Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) Instructor with two combat deployments to Operation Iraqi Freedom, she also completed instructor tours at the F-15E Flight Training Unit and Joint Undergraduate Navigator Training, Senior Air Force Officer, and F-15E Demonstration Team. “A Weapon Systems Officer manages all sensors, guides the weapons to the target, working with people on the ground and the Joint Terminal Air Controller, in support of the ground forces,” she explained. She completed 92 combat missions in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Her husband Maj. Michael Mendieta was born in Fort Belvoir, VA, where his father, Lt. Col USA, retired, was stationed. The family moved back to Texas when his father retired in 1973. Maj. Copyright © 2012 Peel, Inc.

Mendieta graduated from Crockett High School and enlisted in the Marines, shortly after his 18th birthday in 1988. In1989. Mendieta was assigned to 6th Marines Regiment at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and made three deployments in support of contingency operations in the Republic of Panama from 1989 to 1990. In November of 1990 Mendieta was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marines and participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In the fall of 1995 then Staff Sgt. Mendieta was selected for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Program ( MECP), and graduated from U.T. with a bachelor’s in history. While at U.T.-Austin , he met his future wife to-be-,Shelly. “We’ve been together for 15-years, and coincidentally, we will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary on July 6 in Austin with friends and family,” he said. Maj. Mendieta presently serves as Air Officer for the Special Operations Task Force-82 which will deploy to Afghanistan later this year.

“We are part of the 2D Marine Special Operations Battalion which falls under the Marine Special Operations Command (the Marine component of Special Operations Command). We have roughly the same mission as US Army Special Forces or the Navy SEAL’s—we are training the Afghanistan Military,” he explained. “I am also the Senior Forward Air Controller (JTAC) and air planner as well for the Battalion. “This is my second FAC/Air Officer tour. The first was with 3D Battalion, 8th Marines in Ramadi, Iraq in 2006.” Maj. Mendieta completed USMC Command and Staff Course last May, and was promoted to Major in October 2009. He has a total of 1409 flight hours with 596 hours in the EA-6B Prowler. Prowler squadrons are expeditionary so we are strictly land-based”, he said. “Prior to Operation Desert Storm, I served 7 months in Panama participating in contingency operations for Joint Task Force -Bravo, where I also attended the Jungle Operations CounterInsurgency course at Fort Sherman in l989. I served in Somalia in 1993 with the Reconnaissance Platoon for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit/ Special Operations Capable”. Capt. Mendieta deployed to Ramadi, Iraq in 2006 as a Forward Air Controller in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. At the completion of his deployment he was assigned to Naval Air Station Pensacola as a flight instructor withTraining Squadron Eight-Six (VT-86). Maj. Mendieta said he chose the Marines because “he never saw himself as an Air Force kinda of guy.” He enjoys ground reconnaissance and jumping out of airplanes. The Marines impressed me,-first to fight.” By the time Mgt. Mendieta’s tour of duty comes to an end with MARSOC, (Marines Special Operations Command) he will have served 27 years time in service. When asked about what effect their military careers have had on their marriage, both responded positively: “We’ve been relatively lucky with colocations. I think time apart makes us appreciate each other more. We have done very well over the years by spending a lot of money on plane tickets and gasoline. We rarely miss holidays.” Be sure to come out and meet both Co-Grand Marshals. They look forward to meeting everyone. Lakeway Voice - May 2012

LOOKING FOR TENNIS?

If you are looking for opportunity to play tennis, consider joining the Lakeway Tennis Tigers on the City’s Live Oak Courts that are located on Lakeway Drive, next to the golf driving range. To “join”, just show up at 8:30 a.m. with a tennis racquet on any Saturday morning. There is no requirement for membership in any other organization, and there is no cost, but there is a lot of fun. This is social co-ed tennis, so don’t expect heated competition. It is best suited for adults with at least basic tennis skills. There usually are a few ringers, but they get to be partners of someone who isn’t so advanced. The Live Oak Tennis Courts are maintained

by the City of Lakeway for residents and guests. The courts are reserved for organized play for all interested players between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturdays. The current City volunteer organizing the Saturday play is Fred Newton. When he is not there, one of the other regulars handle the organization. At other times during the week, the courts are available on a first come, first served basis, or a court may be reserved for a small fee at the Lakeway Activity Center. Don’t let “organization” be confused with formality. The Saturday morning organization is just a means of getting everyone on court. This is done by various rotation schemes when there are more people than court space or if

there is an odd number of players. At 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., a whistle is blown and players are rotated. This provides opportunities to meet other players. At 10 a.m., play ceases. Players go to the Signature Café in Randalls where they are joined by non-playing spouses, friends, and players who couldn’t get up early enough to play. This provides an opportunity to brag on how good the play was, give excuses, or discuss topics of the day. Most of the players are in foursomes during the week and look to this gathering to arrange substitutions or set up matches. Call Fred Newton at 261-3066 for more information.

Government should not have a blank check to fund out-of-control spending, a popular mindset with the politicians on the Commissioners’ Court. Meanwhile, they ignore the basic services and infrastructure that county government exists to provide to the citizens. Had enough? Let’s bring back honest, straightforward leadership!

Gerald

Daugherty

for Travis County Commissioner, Pct. 3 For six years, Gerald was our conservative voice on the Commissioners’ Court fighting for county government that was accountable to the citizens. If re-elected, Gerald will continue working to: • • • • •

Stop the out-of-control government spending, cut waste and inefficiency and see that the taxes are kept at the lowest possible levels Complete Texas 45 SW that would connect FM 1626 in Hays County with MoPac in Austin, a project approved by voters 15 years ago. Reinstitute a business-friendly environment where county government is a partner, not a hindrance, in the effort to create jobs. Develop reasonable and equitable solutions to meet the growing demands on our drinking water supply and our lakes, from where so much of our economy is derived. Utilize the more than $50 million in park land purchased by the county to develop much needed youth athletic facilities in western Travis County.

in Travis County.

“In dealing with all the needs in western Travis County such as roads, water, a tax rate that’s as low as it can be, or working collaboratively with state government or the school district, Commissioner Gerald Daugherty was one of the most effective elected officials I’ve ever encountered. City Proposes Sale of Portions of Rebel and Sailfish Parks The City of Lakeway has been approached by the owners of certain lots adjacent to Rebel Cove and Sailfish Cove (parts of Rebel Park and Sailfish Park respectively) to purchase the portion of each cove that is normally under water and adjacent to their property. Since the city’s property in each cove is dedicated public parkland, the proposed sale is subject to the approval of the City Council and approval of the voters in the May election. The property owners would like to have the ability to install and maintain private boat docks like many of the other owners of lakefront lots. However, that is almost impossible because much of the coves is city parkland, and private boat docks are not allowed on (or floating over) parkland. To address this situation, they propose to purchase the portion of the park within their respective coves and add it to their lots, thereby extending their lots to the middle of the cove. The City Council has approved selling Rebel Cove, subject to voter approval. The City Council has not yet approved selling Sailfish Cove. Propositions that would authorize the city to sell the coves will be included on the ballot for the city’s election on May 12, 2012.

Annual Household Waste Collection Event Coming

Save the Date of May 19, 2012, 8:00 a.m. to Noon to drop off your products know as household hazardous waste. We all know that no “hazardous” waste is accepted but that products that can become environmentally bad for our water sources when thrown into any landfill are called “hazardous.” These products that are left over in your home can include items such as pool chemicals, paint products, oil, oil filters, car batteries and pesticides. We want to keep these hazardous products out of our landfills. Again this year, document shredding will be provided to residents allowing two standard sized file boxes of documents clear of paper clips or other metal objects. Watch your April statement for a flyer regarding what to bring and what not to bring. Event to be held at the Hudson Bend Middle School, May 19, 8:00 a.m. to Noon. Don’t miss this opportunity to rid your home of old products that should not be placed in normal weekly trash. Fluoride Note: WCID 17 fluoridates drinking water to the level recommended by the American Dental Association of 0.7milligrams per liter (parts per million). Because of their high fluid intake relative to body weight, infants consistently consuming formula mixed with tap water may possibly ingest fluoride above the recommended levels. The Center for Disease Control recommends that infant formula be prepared with distilled or de-mineralized water. Parents are encouraged to speak with their pediatrician about the type of water appropriate for the formula they are using.

Susan Combs to Speak at Lake Travis Republican Club Meeting

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs will be the featured speaker at the monthly meeting of the Lake Travis Republican Club to be held Tuesday, May 15 at the Hills Country Club, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Susan Combs was elected Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts in November 2006 and immediately set an innovative course of action to transform state government and prepare Texas for the future beginning her first day in office on Jan. 1, 2007. As Comptroller, Susan is the state’s chief financial officer. She manages the state’s treasury operations, monitors Texas’ fiscal health, guides legislative decision makers by estimating state revenues and ensures state taxes are collected fairly and efficiently to fund vital programs and services for the people of Texas. But her focus does not end there. With a belief that government must be fully accountable to the people it serves, Susan has spearheaded unprecedented efforts to

give taxpayers a transparent look at how their dollars are spent. She posted the expenses of the Comptroller’s office online her fourth day on the job and took transparency in government spending to new heights by launching the Where the Money Goes Web site. Considered a model by many other states and open government advocates, the site features a virtual check register the gives the public online access to detailed and up-to-date expenditure information for all state entities. Susan is committed to efficient government. Under her direction, the Comptroller’s office has set a standard of excellence and efficiency in customer service. Direct customer feedback guides improvements at every level, from an ongoing effort to simplify forms and publications to the award-winning redesign of the agency’s Web site to ensure citizens have the fastest access to the information they need. Prior to being elected to her current position, Susan held numerous important positions,

starting with serving as an assistant district attorney in Dallas, where her performance as a tough prosecutor of child abuse cases earned her widespread respect. She then served two terms in the Texas House of Representatives, where she sponsored and passed the state’s landmark property rights legislation and authored legislation on tort reform vital to the business community. Following this, Texans elected Susan in back-toback elections in 1998 and 2002 to serve as the state’s first woman Agriculture Commissioner. Susan was born in San Antonio and is a 4th generation Texan with a ranch in Brewster County owned by her great-grandfather more than a century ago. She lives in Austin with her husband, Joe, and is the proud mother of three sons. Tickets for the meeting are available for $15.00 for members, and $20.00 for guests. Reservations can be obtained by calling 512-261-0722, or by email at warmuthb@swbell.net. Lunch buffet will be served.
