ROUND ROCK RANCH
Official Newsletter for the Residents of Round Rock Ranch June 2012
Volume 2, Issue 6
PLEASE HELP SAVE RRR HOA $$$ Only you can help save your Round Rock Ranch Homeowner’s Association dollars! A little bit will go a long way if we all pitch in and do our part. Here are some suggestions. • Gattis Pool Amenity Center – Mail Box Cluster – Take your mail home with you and please recycle. The trash can at the picnic area is for residents at the park. It is always crammed full of junk mail and is costing us extra $$$ to haul off. • Gattis & Sundrop Pool – Please do not put pool furniture in the baby pools! It is scratching up the plaster on the bottom of the pools and this is big $$$ to resurface! • Gattis Pool Playground – Do not let your children throw rocks into the swimming pool! The pool cleaning service is charging us extra $$$ to clean the rocks out of the pool. The board has received a bid to replace the rocks with mulch and it is thousands of $$$ to take on this project. If you see children throwing rocks, please ask them to stop. There is a lot of dog poop around both playgrounds/open fields and picnic areas of our common area. This is nasty and a health hazard to children and our homes. If you see someone’s dog relieving themselves in these areas, please ask them to clean it up. We will either need to hire someone and pay extra $$$ to clean up after your dogs or ban dogs from these areas. It is your choice. If you receive a violation notice from the management company, please take care of it within two weeks or call Jennifer at 339-6962. We have inspections every two weeks and these notices are costing us $$$ for each one sent out. I have been receiving a lot of complaints about children at the pool without a parent or guardian and the gate being opened for children/families without pool key cards. It has been suggested we hire someone to monitor the pools. This will be a big $$$ expense. If there is an accident involving a minor or non resident at the pool, a potential lawsuit is big $$$ and there is the possibility of shutting down the pools. Please help protect our investment. I need your help and support to get us back on track. I have been patrolling the pools and sent many children home these past few weeks to get a parent or adult to swim at the pool. I am only one person and need the whole community to help me. Please comply with the suggestions above and help make Round Rock Ranch the best and safest place to live in Round Rock!
ACC UPDATE Dear RRR Neighbors,
I want to congratulate those that have been working to improve their yards and make them less water dependent. We have recently approved several requests for improvements that include rocks, mulch, and stone. I look forward to seeing how these turn out. We will keep everyone updated as the plans get underway. We have also seen several requests that do not come close to detailing enough information. When you are preparing your ACC Request it is pertinent that you include:
• 1. A Plot Plan- Everyone should have gotten one of these with their “closing paperwork” when they purchased their home. If you do not have one of these, you can obtain one through the Williamson County Appraisal District • 2. Photos of the area that you will be changing • 3. Photos of the items….rock, shed, shrubs … you will be adding. These are easy to obtain online or with a camera. • 4. Most Importantly: A copy of the ACC request form Let me know if you have trouble. These are easy to do and will likely help you think through your plans. - Paul Yehl

Jennifer's Corner More than a destination at the end of the day, a community is a place people want to call home and where they feel at home. This goal is best achieved when homeowners, non-owner residents and association leaders recognize and accept their rights and responsibilities. HOMEOWNERS HAVE THE RIGHT TO
• A responsive and competent community association. • Honest, fair and respectful treatment by community leaders and managers. • Participate in governing the community association by attending meetings, serving on committees and standing for election. • Access appropriate association books and records. • Prudent expenditure of fees and other assessments. • Live in a community where the property is maintained according to established standards. • Fair treatment regarding financial and other association obligations, including the opportunity to discuss payment plans and options with the association before foreclosure is initiated. • Receive all documents that address rules and regulations governing the community association—if not prior to purchase and settlement by a real estate agent or attorney, then upon joining the community. • Appeal to appropriate community leaders those decisions affecting non-routine financial responsibilities or property rights. • • • • • •
HOMEOWNERS HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO
Read and comply with the governing documents of the community. Maintain their property according to established standards. Treat association leaders honestly and with respect. Vote in community elections and on other issues. Pay association assessments and charges on time. Contact association leaders or managers, if necessary, to discuss financial obligations and alternative payment arrangements. • Request reconsideration of material decisions that personally affect them. • Provide current contact information to association leaders or managers to help ensure they receive information from the community. • Ensure that those who reside on their property (e.g., tenants, relatives, friends) adhere to all rules and regulations.
We encourage all owners to act on their rights and recognize their responsibilities. A Community Association Institute publication, part 2 to follow in the next newsletter. Thank you

Host a Foreign Exchange Student
U.S. SENATORS Kay Bailey Hutchison | 512-916-5834
TRAVEL THE WORLD WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR HOMETOWN
John Cornyn | 512-469-6034
by Heather Wells Who hasn’t dreamed about walking among the Egyptian pyramids, or soaking in the sun on a beach in Spain, or wandering along the Great Wall of China? Every parent wants to give their children a taste of the world, but the economic reality of international air travel for a family, not to mention hotels, passports and food, makes it tough for most of us to consider except in our daydreams. There is a way to give your children the world – without leaving your living room. How? Host a foreign exchange student from a country you’ve always admired! Fascinated by France? Curious about China? Intrigued by India? By welcoming an international student from one of these countries into your home, you instantly open a portal to a far off land. “My husband and I have been hosting for the past three years and have enjoyed every minute of it!” said Vicki Odom, an Ayusa host mom from Pearland, Texas. “The various students we’ve had in our home have taught us a great deal about their home countries. The students also love learning about life in Texas and participate in a good deal on community service. Their latest service projects was volunteering to be Super Scoopers at the San Antonio Battle of Flowers Parade.” Foreign exchange students come from all over the world. Ayusa matches host families with students from more than 60 different countries including Argentina, China, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, Japan, Lebanon, Norway, Pakistan, Sweden, Thailand, Tunisia and Turkey. All high school foreign exchange students are fully insured, bring their own spending money, and are proficient in English – and all high school exchange programs are regulated by the U.S. Department of State. “We welcome host families of all shapes and sizes – families with young children, families with no children, empty nesters whose children have left home, single parents and non-traditional families,” says Connie Coutu, Regional Manager of Ayusa, a non-profit that promoting global learning and leadership through foreign exchange and study abroad opportunities for high school students. “The key requirements for a host family are to provide a safe and nurturing home environment, genuinely love children, and have a desire to learn more about a different culture.” Volunteer host families provide foreign exchange students a nurturing environment, three meals a day and a bedroom (either private or shared with a host sibling of the same gender). Each host family and student is supported by a professionally trained community representative who works with the family and student for the entire program. All interested host families must pass a criminal background check and a home visit by an exchange organization. Interested host families are required to fill out an application, pass a background check and interview with a local exchange program representative in their homes. Once accepted to a program, host (Continued on Page 5)

GATE UPDATE
The Board selected a vendor in January 2012 for repairs and painting of the gates. After the request to begin work was sent, the Board was advised the bid price had increased since the bid was first received. In an effort to be very conscious about how our money is spent, we requested an explanation for the increase and to date have not received one. The Board then asked for three new bids as well as bids for subsequent pieces of this project - to this day we have not received one. On June 1st, ProfCam1 will assume the responsibility for this project and make the completion of the Gate Project their first priority for our community. For more information on this project, please attend the Annual Meeting.

ROUND ROCK RANCH A Focus on Eye Health & Safety for Your Family by Concentra Urgent Care ADULT EYE HEALTH Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an important part of preserving good eye health. Keys to healthy vision include: • Avoiding smoking • Eating a balanced diet, rich in dark green vegetables and foods that contain zinc, vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene • Staying active • Controlling your blood pressure • Protecting your eyes from the sun by wearing eyewear that absorbs UV rays and brimmed hats or caps • Staying current with periodic eye exams as recommended by your doctor if you have diabetes or other chronic conditions that can affect your vision SIGNS OF PROBLEMS See your doctor if you experience any of the following: • Unusual trouble adjusting to the dark • Difficulty focusing on objects • Squinting due light sensitivity • Change in color of iris (colored part of your eye) • Red, crusty, or swollen eyelids • Recurring pain around eyes • Double vision • Dark spots or floaters in vision • Distorted or wavy lines/edges • Watery eyes • Itchy or burning dry eyes • Seeing spots or ghost-like images
CHILD EYE HEALTH Newborns should be checked for inherited eye problems at the time of delivery. Between six and twelve months, infants’ eyes should be checked again by a health care professional. At three to four years old, children should start getting their eyes checked at regular intervals. EYE INJURIES The most common causes of eye injuries in children are: misuse of toys, everyday objects, and tools (forks and knives, pens and pencils, garden tools), falls, contact with harmful household products (detergents, cleaning supplies, paint, glue), and car accidents. The best ways to avoid these types of injuries are to properly baby proof your home, read all warnings and instructions on toys, and be sure your children are properly secured in infant carriers and car seats. Seek immediate medical attention if your child... • has obvious pain or trouble seeing • has a cut or torn eyelid • does not move one eye as well as the other • has one eye that sticks out compared to the other • has an unusual pupil size or shape • has blood in the clear part of the eye • has something in the eye that cannot be easily removed
XERI-SCAPING VS ZERO-SCAPING Before you submit your landscape plan, please consider some interesting information about zero-scaping. It is documented that zero-scaping can increase temperatures in urban environments by about 20° F. The notion that zero-scapes are maintenance free isn’t entirely true. In fact, an all rock landscape encourages the growth of weeds. This means that you are going to have to weed your zeri-scape every once in a while. In the wet season, weeds will grow much faster and your supposedly “no maintenance” zero scape will require frequent maintenance! Don’t take our word for it. Go to the following link to read a very interesting article: http://www.xeriscaped.com/ xeriscaping-vs-zero-scaping-the-casefor-xeriscaping/
