Concerned Residents of Lakewood Grove: There have been numerous squirrels in our subdivision that have been hit by cars lately. There are as many as two to three a day and this causes concerns in regards to the speed of the drivers in our subdivision. If this is happening every day, shouldn’t we be concerned for our children’s safety, especially now that school is out for the summer?? Can’t we all slow down some more and watch for the children and the animals in our streets? Thank you!!! (From concerned neighbors)

Pool closes for the season on Tuesday, September 4, 2012.

Innovations in the Swimming Pool Industry

Innovations have been introduced into the swimming pool industry over the past several years, which can improve your water quality and save you money on the operation of your equipment. Here are some of the things you may want to consider for your current or future swimming pool. PUMPS A pump is needed to circulate the water in your pool. Sometimes more than one pump is needed. If you want your pool and spa to be able to circulate at the same time, then you typically need separate pumps for the pool and spa. If you have any additional water features like a waterfall, you might need a separate pump for it as well. Certain pool cleaners also need a separate pump. The old thinking was that the larger the horsepower of the pump, the better it would perform. That is no longer the case. A smaller horsepower pump which is built with energy savings in mind can operate more efficiently and less expensively than the higher horsepower pumps. Relatively recent innovations in pumps include the introduction of variable speed pumps. A two speed pump is much less expensive to operate than a single speed pump. Even more efficient are multispeed pumps. The savings can be incredible! For instance, Pentair is a major manufacturer of swimming pool equipment. They patented a pump called the Intelliflo Variable Speed pump (called the VS3050, 4 x 160. Other equipment manufacturers may have similar pumps). This pump has four variable speeds of operation with 3 HP capability. The pump is programmed to operate at different speeds

depending on the demand for power. Pentair has a web site on which you can calculate your savings through the use of this pump (or one of their 2 speed pumps). Using the example of an electricity rate of 11 cents per kwh on an 18,000 gallon pool, a single speed pump will cost about $2.73 per day to operate (equivalent to $996.00 per year). Change that pump to a 2 speed pump, and the cost of operation goes down to about $1.08 per day (equivalent to $394.00 per year). Stepping up to the 4 speed pump, electricity costs will equate to about 17 cents per day, equivalent to $62 per year). This pump can also operate both your pool and spa (note: they both cannot be on at the same time, but don’t need to), so a second pump is not necessary. If you are changing out your equipment or building a new pool, keep these pumps in mind to save money and help the environment by lowering demand. One special note…larger plumbing pipes are often suggested by the manufacturer to optimize the water flow and energy savings. Pentair, for instance, recommends 3” plumbing lines instead of the normal 2”. SANITATION Subject to a major debate in our humid area of the country is the type of sanitation you should use for your pool. You probably grew up with and still experience in community pools and gyms the use of man-made chlorine to kill the bacteria and germs in the water. This type of sanitation, though, produces poor water quality and is expensive to maintain. The chemical chlorine can burn the eyes, irritate and dry out your skin and sometimes even turn hair a different color. For

(Continued from Page 8) some time now, a salt water pool has become the preferred method, although it can come with some negatives. A more recent type of sanitation is achieved through ozone. A salt water pool is achieved through normal table salt passing through a “salt cell” (part of the pool equipment) to produce natural chlorine. Salt is less expensive that man-made chlorine and produces a nice feel to the pool water. It does not burn the eyes or irritate the skin or hair like man-made chlorine. The negatives to salt water are that they can be corrosive to any natural stone around your pool and possibly to the pool equipment. Over the years of use, some people are seeing signs of their stone flaking and deteriorating from the salt water. One way to avoid this is to apply a strong industrial type sealant on all natural stone and be prepared to reseal it every 6 months to a year. In the Houston area now, there are pool builders who will refuse to install a salt water pool and others that will require the homeowner to sign a waiver for potential damage. The damage usually takes some years to visualize. If you have concrete coping (like pool brick or cantilevered concrete), there is less worry in going to salt water. A sanitation method gaining in popularity among more forward thinking pool builders is the use of ozone to sanitize the water. In this sense, “ozone” is a good word. Ozone is typically created through a couple of methods. The first type is via ultraviolet light. Another

Lakewood Grove

type is through a corona discharge system. The corona discharge types were problematic in years past. In our humid climate, those systems did not perform well. Steps have been taken to improve their functionality in humid climates. This author prefers the type of ozone created through ultraviolet light. These types of sanitizers require a chlorinator to introduce chlorine into the pool to kill the type of bacteria that the ozone cannot kill. Chlorine demand, however, is low and does not result in the caustic results of a 100% chlorine pool. Ozone kills bacteria, viruses, spores, and mold and does it fast. Ozone pierces the cell wall of bacteria and viruses killing them 3000 times faster than chlorine. Ozone was first used in swimming pool water treatment in the 1950's. Since then its use has widely grown. There are over 30,000 swimming pools in Europe that are treated with ozone. The swimming pools for the Olympics have been treated with Ozone at least since 1986 for the Los Angeles Olympics. Most recently the Sydney Aquatic Center pool water was treated with Ozone as will be the London Olympics pool. Well known water facilities using ozone to treat their water: Disneyland and Disney World for all their water features, Mirage Resort - Las Vegas, San Diego Zoo for their marine and Aquatic habitats, Vancouver Aquarium, Vancouver, Canada - for their Sea mammal support systems. An ozone system should not cost more than a salt water system and may cost less when all costs are factored in.
