2012 Pool Notice The pool registration and indemnification forms may be found at www.SilverlakeHOA. com. If you have already received your access card from the previous years or are not requesting additional cards, you are not required to submit an access card request form. If you are unable to print out the access card form and indemnification form please contact PCMI at 281-870-0585 or via e-mail at lcoffey@stes.com. You will be required to show photo identification when using the card at the pool facility. You may use any photo identification card or your driver’s license reflecting your local address to gain admittance. Lifeguards will not permit access to anyone at the 2715 Southwyck Parkway Pool facility without the proper access card and photo identification. **No Exceptions!** Residents must be in good standing with the Silverlake Homeowner’s Association, Inc., to use the community facilities. Your community pool opens Saturday, May 5th for weekends only. The pool will open for regular weekday activity effective Tuesday, June 1st. Final swim day will be September 3rd. Tips for a Healthy Summer: Eat Smarter and Move More By Sarah S. Jordan, MS The 4th of July holiday is almost here, and along with it comes good food, parties, and great times with family and friends. These things pretty much go hand in hand with summer. Summer is a very common time for people to fall off the “health wagon,” but it doesn’t have to be that way. Eating right and getting enough activity can certainly be a challenge, especially when holidays and travel are involved. But the keys are: being consistent, making good choices, eating in moderation, and purposely finding ways to move more. Here are some tips to make your summer a healthier one for your family and friends. SMALL CHANGES = BIG RESULTS Making small changes for your summer cookouts and potlucks can equal big nutritional improvements. Traditional Summer Food A More Healthy Alternative Hot dogs Turkey dogs Hamburger Turkey burger Potato salad Fruit salad Chips and high fat dip Assorted vegetables and hummus Fried chicken Grilled chicken kabobs w/ veggies Pie Fresh pineapple Soda and sweet tea Iced tea with lemon Using high-fat mayonnaise Use low-fat mayo or the kind that has olive oil in it HEALTHY RECIPE SWAP You can even request that guests bring a healthy dish and include the recipe along with the dish. After the event, the party host types up all of the recipes and emails them to party guests. Just like that - everyone is equipped with healthy things to try on their own! GET MOVIN’! Instead of a party revolving solely around the food involved, why not create a “buffet of games” and activity to center the

event around instead? Here are some ideas for fun backyard games to try this summer with your family and friends. Just be sure to let your guests know the “active” theme ahead of time so they can dress accordingly and be prepared to move. Host a miniature version of the Olympics. This can consist of things like wheelbarrow races, three legged races, running, water balloon tosses, and team relays. Have prizes for the teams. Create an art contest using chalk. Have three judges and give out prizes for the most creative pieces of art. And maybe even to the adult with the most “artfully challenged” piece of “art.” Play a classic game of “Kick the Can.” Make sure you have at least 3-4 people playing this game. One person is “it” and guards the “can.” (Can needs to be in an open space.) Other players hide while the “it” person counts to 20 and then goes to find the other players. Captured (tagged) players go to “jail.” Anyone not captured can kick the can, which sets all jailed players free. If the “it” person finds all players before the can is kicked, the “it” person wins the game. Have a Hula-Hoop contest. Crank up the fun music, and see who can twirl the longest! Create a canvas. Hang an old white sheet on your fence or clothesline and let the creativity flow while your guests create a beautiful work of art! Send your guests on a scavenger hunt. There are many ways to get creative with this, including giving the hunt a theme to match your party, having guests find things in nature and draw pictures of what they find, or having your guests do something (ex: 10 jumping jacks) every time they find something on the list. Slip and Slide! Give your party a water theme to beat the heat. Set up two identical slip and slides and see who slides the fastest and/or the farthest. Crown your champion. Test out other games like horseshoes, washers, Bocce ball, four-square, hopscotch, whiffle-ball, or kick ball. Here’s to a healthy and active summer ahead. Cheers!

Please Read Regarding Recycle Bins

Dear Brazoria MUD #3 Homeowner: The Brazoria County MUD #3 Board of Directors is considering upgrading our recycle bins and we would like your feedback. For several years now Waste Management has offered a recycling program for our residents. The following website shows the list of acceptable materials and requested guidelines for recycling: http://www.wm.com/customer-service/ residential-recycling-faq.jsp The list of acceptable materials has been expanded several times over the years. However, our recycling bins have not been upgraded to meet this growing list. Families who fully utilize the recycling program are likely to find their recycle bin full early in the week. Waste Management offers a much larger and sturdier recycle bin for residents. The bin is 96-gallons and has wheels and a lid. It will be able to hold 5X the volume of our current recycling bin and the lid will prevent lighter plastics and paper from blowing away on windy days. However, there are obvious disadvantages to this much larger container. Silverlake HOA deed restrictions require trash containers (including recycle bins) to be kept out-of-view on non-trash days. For residents with limited space in their garage, this could be a burden.

Brazoria County MUD #6 (west Silverlake & Silvercreek) upgraded to the larger recycling bins in November 2011. Response to the new recycle bins has generally been favorable. If our district votes in favor of the new recycle bins, every household will receive a new bin. Under special circumstances, residents will be allowed to continue using their small recycling bin, but they must receive permission from the Board of Directors. There is a $1 per month per household cost increase for the new recycle bins. There will not be an option for residents to opt out of the cost increase, even if they keep their smaller recycling bins. We would like to hear your opinion! Please let us know if you would like to upgrade to the new recycle bin by going to https:// www.surveymonkey.com/s/bcmud3bins and logging your preference. You will also have the option to leave a comment. Your feedback will be reviewed and taken into consideration for the vote at the July meeting. Summer Lawn Maintenance Tips Let’s face it, there’s nothing better looking than a long block full of freshly manicured lawns. The Spring and Summer is when all of us get outdoors and really work hard to keep our homes looking great. So how do you get that curb appeal to have your home looking just as good as your neighbors? According to Dummies.com, “Most grasses have a range of recommended mowing heights. Stay at the upper end of that range when the lawn is under stressful conditions, such as hot weather or drought.” Dummies.com has published a table of suggested mowing heights for different grass types. Since Silverlake is predominantly Bermuda and St. Augustine, the recommended heights are ¾ to 1 ½ inches and 1 ½ to 2 ½ inches respectively. Another way to keep your lawn looking great is to put on the finishing touches of edging and trimming, it helps to keep your home looking great! Don’t forget to sweep up the grass clippings, remember you’ve worked hard on your lawn, why spoil its beauty by leaving the clippings in your driveway, on your sidewalk or in the street. Finally, if you see some errant grass growing in the expansion joints of the driveway, the sidewalk or the gutter in front of your home, take a couple of minutes to remove it. It makes a big difference to the appearance of your home and your neighborhood. Once this has been all done, grab a cool glass of lemonade and pull up a chair. Relax in the sunshine and enjoy the view of your freshly manicured lawn!

July 4th Safety Tips for your Four-Legged Family Members

The fourth of July is fast approaching, this is the time to kick back and bar-b-que with friends and family, hang out by the pool and watch fireworks. You will be sure to put some sunblock and insect repellent on the kiddos, but how do you go about protecting your four-legged family member? The ASPCA has listed some important reminders to help keep Rover or Fluffy safe this during the summer season. Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them. They do have the potential to poison your pet. If ingested, the animal could become very intoxicated and weak, severely depressed or slip into a coma. Do not use sunscreen or insect repellent on your pet that is not specifically labeled for use on animals. Insect repellent contains DEET which can lead to neurological problems. Ingestion of sunscreen can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and excessive thirst and lethargy. Keep your pets on their normal diets. It’s hard to resist those big eyes staring up at you; however there are some human foods out there that are potentially toxic to animals. Do not put glow jewelry on your pets or allow them to play with it, this can cause excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation if your pet were to swallow it. Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oils out of reach. Ingestion can produce stomach irritation and possibly central nervous system depression. The oils if inhaled can cause aspiration pneumonia. NEVER use fireworks around pets! Exposure can result in severe burns or trauma to their face or paws. On an additional note, the Silverlake Yahoo Group message board will inevitably contain numerous postings of dogs who’ve run off. Please remember fireworks and other loud noises are extremely distressing to your pets. If at all possible, please keep your dog inside the house during the festivities. Silvercrest Elementary Volunteer of the Year - Congratulations to our volunteer of the year, Angie Schmidt! Thanks Angie for all of your hard work and dedication on behalf of Silvercrest Elementary. Fundraising - Silvercrest PTA would like to thank the parents and community for their support of our events and fundraisers this year.
