Lakeway Regional Medical Center Hospital Update Since opening this past April, Lakeway Regional Medical Center (LRMC) has hit many milestones in becoming a world class destination hospital. Form its first patient experience at approximately 10:30 AM on April 16th, their great nursing team has been providing exceptional care, causing the first ripple of LRMC becoming a beacon of quality. Thus far, the hospital has: • Served over 1,200 community members in the emergency room • Captured over 1,000 radiology images • Performed over 150 surgical cases, including multiple catherterizations and 5 open heart surgeries • Delivered over 20 babies into the Lake Travis Community • Received over 300 applications from physician the medical staff In each case, we are reminded that having healthcare close to home is prevalent to everyone in different ways. With every new day, the team of board certified physicians, nurses and all other staff realize new potential opportunities of growing into Austin’s premier hospital. Lakeway Regional Plaza (new office building), expected to open in September, will bring us closer to that realization as a well-rounded group of primary care and specialty physicians take a more permanent and visible presence on the medical campus.

Dancing Stars WITH THE

The Lake Travis Community Library is excited to announce that they will hold their 3rd annual Dancing with the Stars! gala fundraiser on Sunday, October 7, 2012 from 6pm– 10pm at the beautiful Starlight Terrace at The OASIS on Lake Travis. See your favorite Lake Travis area celebrities compete for the prized disco ball trophy. LT’s newest celebrity, Dr. Brad Lancaster, LTISD Superintendent has agreed to lend his talents to raise funds for the new library building. The stellar cast also includes, LT Fire and Rescue Chief, Jim Linardos; LT Chamber of Commerce Event & Membership Director, Mallory Voorheis and her partner Jose Garcia, chamber member and local business owner of Cabeza Advertising; LTHS Assistant Band Director Lance Brightwell and his wife Hannah, instructor at Alisa’s Dance Studio. Of course, Dottie Stevenson of Lakeway’s “Dottie’s Follies” and the Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway will dance for the third year and defend her 2011 first place title. Around Lakeway OMG! Like TexARTS’ “Legally Blonde” Was A Total HIT! Where have those lazy days of summer gone? Well, they certainly never existed for the 40 students enrolled in TexARTS’ Musical Theatre Intensive. Working at a pace equal to any professional theatre company, the MTI students rehearsed, staged and performed their version of the Broadway smash, “Legally Blonde” all in just three weeks. Based on the novel by Amanda Brown and the popular Reese Witherspoon film, “Legally Blonde” tells the tale of sorority star Elle Woods. When dumped by her boyfriend for someone more “serious,” Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books and hatches a plan to win back her beau by enrolling in Harvard Law. Along the way, Elle proves that being true to oneself never goes out of style. TexARTS instructor and Broadway veteran Keenah Armitage directed this uplifting, feel good production that combined all the original wit with a catchy pop score and energetic dance numbers. As an added bonus, the MTI student cast was able to gain additional insight to the show by taking master classes with guest teaching artist Jason Gilmore. Gilmore, a professional actor, starred in the original Broadway cast of “Legally Blonde.” Kalie Naftzger, a 15-year old TexARTS student, landed the lead role of Elle. “Elle Woods is a dream role for me,” said Naftzger. “The intensive was challenging and yet a great learning experience. The instructors were wonderful and helped push me to fully embrace my role. This was my sixth summer intensive at TexARTS and I can’t wait for next year.” If you missed the sold out run of “Legally Blonde,” be sure to attend the TexARTS’ open house, “A Taste of TexARTS,” on August 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There you can meet the instructors and the cast, take a free dance class and enjoy some selected musical numbers from “Legally Blonde.” TexARTS is a non-profit organization that also offers year-round classes in acting, voice, ballet and dance as well as completely staged youth and professional productions. TexARTS’ mission is to cultivate a thriving arts community by exposing all people to the visual and performing arts. THE BEAT GOES ON IN LAKEWAY

What better way to beat the heat than to dance or listen to big band music of the Sinatra era in Lakeway on Monday, August 13. The City of Lakeway’s monthly Big Band Bash continues to be the best dance in Central Texas. On the second Monday of each month, from 8 to 10 pm, the Big Band Bash takes place at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, telephone. 261-1010. This free monthly event (donations to the band will be encouraged) offers a large dance floor, with plenty of tables. You may bring your own refreshments, if desired, as none are provided. There are no reservations—doors will open at 7:30 p.m. Well known singers (and Lakeway residents), David Cummings and Lisa Clark, are featured with The Republic of Texas Band. It is a 17- piece band, conducted by Kent Dugan. This band consistently appeals to dancers of many generations. Expect to hear a wide variety of favorite tunes with fresh arrangements. Get your dancing shoes polished, dress up a bit (not formal), and come out to dance and listen to some really great music. books, but in high school, teachers want you to not only see what’s on the surface, but to also read in between the lines,” said Wee. “A discussion group would help because you can see how others interpret the book to make sure you don’t miss anything important.” At the study groups, students will discuss the books, talk about annotations, practice class discussions, and get advice from former students. Upperclassmen at Lake Travis High School have volunteered to attend the discussions to help prepare younger students. Paintings by Joan Lawson July 31 to September 11

Beginning July 31, 2012 to September 11, 2012 , paintings by Joan Lawson will be on display at the Lakeway City Hall Art Gallery. The exhibit may be viewed during regular City Hall office hours Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Art Gallery is located off the lobby of City Hall at 1102 Lohmans Crossing. Joan Lawson’s paintings are vibrantly alive with movement and texture. She finds inspiration in the natural beauty and light of the Texas Hill Country, as well as her travels in the United States and abroad. Her style ranges from realism to nonrepresentational, depending on how the subject renders itself at the time. She enjoys painting her beautiful surroundings, but also likes to express in abstract and figurative form her interpretation of dreams and visions. “I express my relationship to the Universe through my art.” Joan has been painting all of her life, starting out using oils and watercolors. But now she enjoys the flexibility of acrylics and collage to achieve texture and depth in her work. In her exhibit at Lakeway City Hall, she will be showing her latest works in her “Dreamscape” series. She uses vibrant oranges, reds and golds applied with a palette knife and large brushes to capture the emotion and mood of each piece. Joan paints and gives lessons in her home studio. She has a BA in studio art from Oklahoma City University, and has studied painting with well-known artists in the U.S. and France. She is a founding member and current board member of the Creative Arts Society in Austin. Her paintings are in private and corporate collections in the U.S. and abroad. She currently shows her works in local galleries and exhibitions, including a recent show at Dougherty Arts Center. Her work is currently on display at Cypress Grill, Corridor of Art, and Amplify Credit Union. Her work can also be seen in her studio at 7744 El Dorado Drive and on the web at www. joanlawson.com.

LCPAAA Beat

The Lakeway Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (LCPAAA) celebrated with the 2012 graduates of the Citizens Police Academy on June 6th for the certificate presentation and party. Lieutenant Ken Farr of the Lakeway Police Department and Dean of the Citizens Police Academy, Officer Eric Barto hosted the bestowal of diplomas at the Lakeway Activity Center. The program takes a major commitment on the part of each graduate to 72-hours of instruction designed to give the public a working knowledge of law enforcement and the Lakeway Police Departmentís policies and operational practices. The LCPAAA is a non-profit organization composed of academy graduates. While the Lakeway Police Department has been conducting yearly Citizen Police Academies since 2004, the alumni association was founded in 2009. The charter of the LCPAAA is to assist in education of the community related to the LPD and serve when requested on community projects. In June, the LCPAAA invited speakers from the Lake Travis Fire and Rescue and the LCRA to make presentations at the Lakeway Municipal Court about coping with the “Long Hot Texas Summer”. Bob Rose, Chief Meteorologist for LCRA, summarized the weather pattern we have been experiencing for the last couple years and renewed our hope things will change. Also speaking from LCRA was Nora Mullarkey, Supervisor on Water Conservation and Assistant Chief of LTFR, John Durham, who educated us on drought and wildfire awareness. Members of LCPAAA are gearing up for Park Patrol. Soon you will see members patrolling the Lakeway greenbelt paths with a radio to offer assistance and contact police in emergencies. Training is open to Citizen Police Academy graduates. Contact Officer Eric Barto at the LPD or LCPAAA president, Sharon Brashear. For the past two years LCPAAA has also assisted at the Lakeway Public Safety Day. This community event brings together emergency service personnel from across Travis County. An exciting day where you can meet bomb sniffing dogs, see robots, talk to the LPD Auto Theft taskforce and see close up emergency helicopters from all county services. A very educational event, it also offers entertainment, food and an opportunity for kids to meet and talk to real heroes in person. This year the event is scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 2012 watch the local newspaper and other venues for more details. Meetings for LCPAAA are held every other month and address a topic of interest to the community. The next meeting will be August 16th at the Lakeway Municipal Court at 7PM, the public is invited. Ensuring a Healthy Return to the Classroom Begins at Home * * * * *

As a parent, there’s no doubt that back-to-school season requires a lot of effort to get your kids all set for the challenges of the classroom. But it’s also an important time to consider your child’s health, says Daniel Howard, M.D., a pediatrician with The Austin Diagnostic Clinic (ADC). “From making sure all of the proper vaccinations have been administered on schedule, to getting their kids back on ‘school year’ sleep schedules, health is obviously a huge consideration for parents with school-age children,” Dr. Howard says. • Vaccinations 101. Children should receive a variety of vaccinations and booster shots to prevent them from getting many serious and highly contagious diseases. • Hearing and vision tests. Consider getting your child’s hearing and vision tested before they begin school to prevent learning challenges in the classroom. • Health information. Parents should be prepared to provide schools with a list of emergency contact information that includes telephone numbers for parents, close family, pediatrician, and dentist. • Diet and sleep. Healthy eating is a critical part of a child’s physical and mental development and can help curb the risk of childhood obesity. Sleep is also essential—kids should get between eight to 11 hours per day, depending on their age. The American Association of University Women is a group of degreed individuals which works to ensure that opportunities and access of all kinds remain available to women and girls throughout the country and across the globe. Most people are aware that Title IX transformed athletics across the academic spectrum. Today, largely due to the efforts of groups like the AAUW, more and more women are also receiving equal pay for equal work, achieving the highest positions in business, and are also reaching pinnacle positions in government. Due to AAUW, deserving academic researchers are rewarded for their achievements with annual fellowships. The Austin branch of AAUW is in the middle of its annual membership drive. The organization does not advertise, so it is important that people learn of this group and the indelible effect it can have on the lives of women. In Austin, AAUW volunteers work in GirlsStart and Mindspring, groups reaching out to girls who need a hand up; they

support non-profits like Ten Thousand Villages on South Congress, which markets the handmade goods of women in Third World Countries. Others are out in the community registering voters or working at voting sites. Membership VP Diane Brewer says that the dues of $75 are divided among the national, state, and local levels of AAUW, and due to the work of the association, all but $3 is tax deductible. News You Can Use Oven Baked Tilapia with Leek Cilantro Salad by The Four Points Foodie

This is just a yummy dish! Oven baked tilapia is a good staple. I breaded mine with panko for a really light and crunchy texture. But what sets this recipe apart is the leek and cilantro salad on top. Served over a bed of jasmine rice, this is the perfect summertime meal.

TILAPIA & RICE Ingredients: • Jasmine Rice, cooked per the package to serve 4 • 4 Tilapia fillets, rinsed and dried • 2 T olive oil • 12 oz panko bread crumbs • salt and pepper Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare Jasmine Rice per the package to make 4 servings. Rinse and dry tilapia fillets and rub each one with olive oil. Dredge through the panko break crumbs, pushing with your fingers so it sticks. Add a little extra olive oil onto your pan and place the breaded tilapia on it. Season with salt and pepper and bake in the oven for about 20 minutes or until done.

LEEK AND CILANTRO SALAD Ingredients: • 2 leeks, green tops discarded, sliced in half, rinsed and patted dry • 2 bunches cilantro, rinsed and dried • 2 T rice vinegar • 1 T butter • 2 T olive oil • Salt and Pepper Directions: Chop off the green tops of the leeks and slice in half, which makes cleaning easier. Remove all sand and pat dry. Slice the leeks and add to a saute pan with the 1 T of butter. Saute until tender, remove from heat and cool. Meanwhile, pick the clean cilantro leaves off the stems and add to a bowl. Add the cooled sauted leeks, rice vinegar, olive oil and season to taste with salt and pepper. To assemble: Start with a bed of jasmine rice, then the baked tilapia and topped with the delicious leek and cilantro salad. Serves 4.

Pruning Guidelines

for Prevention of Oak Wilt in Texas

Oak wilt, caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum, is the most destructive disease affecting live oaks and red oaks in Central Texas. Most of the tree mortality results from treeto-tree spread of the pathogen through interconnected or grafted root systems, once an oak wilt center becomes established. New infection centers begin when beetles carry oak wilt fungal spores from infected red oaks to fresh, open wounds on healthy oaks. Wounds include any damage caused by wind, hail, vehicles, construction, squirrels, birds or pruning. Research has shown that both oak wilt fungal mats on infected red oaks and insects that carry oak wilt spores are most prevalent in the spring. Below is a brief description of how you can reduce the risk of fungal spread when pruning. • Always paint fresh wounds on oaks, including pruning cuts and stumps, with wound dressing or latex paint immediately after pruning or live tree removal at all times of the year. • Clean all pruning tools with 10% bleach solution or Lysol™ between sites and/or trees. • If possible avoid pruning or wounding of oaks during the spring (currently defined as February1 through June 30). Reasons to prune in the spring include: • To accommodate public safety concerns such as hazardous limbs, traffic visibility or emergency utility line clearance. • To repair damaged limbs (from storms or other anomalies) • To remove limbs rubbing on a building or rubbing on other branches, and to raise low limbs over a street. • On sites where construction schedules take precedence, pruning any live tissue should only be done to accommodate required clearance. • Dead branch removal where live tissue is not exposed.

Pruning for other reasons (general tree health, non-safety related clearance or thinning, etc.) should be conducted before February 1 or after June 30. Debris from diseased red oaks should be immediately chipped, burned or buried. Regardless of the reasons or time of year, proper pruning techniques should be used. These techniques include making proper pruning cuts and avoiding injurious practices such as topping or excessive crown thinning. If you are uncertain about any of this information, you should consult with a Texas Oak Wilt Certified arborist, ISA Certified Arborist, or an oak wilt specialist from a city, county or state government agency such as the Texas Forest Service or Texas AgriLife Extension Service.

Lakeway MUD is now in Stage 2 (first level) drought conditions effective immediately. You are only allowed to irrigate TWO DAYS a week. Irrigate outdoors using an in-ground irrigation system or hose-end sprinkler no more than TWICE per week and only during scheduled days and times as indicated below: RESIDENTIAL Odd number addresses: Wednesdays and Saturdays Even number addresses: Thursdays and Sundays COMMERCIAL (INCLUDING LARGE LANDSCAPES SUCH AS HOA COMMON AREAS) Tuesdays and Fridays

WATERING HOURS: Midnight to 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to midnight Note – this schedule is NOT the same as City of Austin’s.  Additional restrictions include: • Irrigation for new/re-vegetated landscapes must apply for a variance • Vehicle washing is prohibited except on mandatory times/days • Filling/re-filling of pools is prohibited (maintaining water level is not prohibited) • Operation of outside water features are prohibited (except to sustain aquatic life) • Golf courses must develop a plan to meet a 10% reduction • Restaurants are encouraged to serve water only if asked • Washing of sidewalks, buildings, etc is prohibited  If you have any questions, please call our office at 261-6222.  Thank you for assisting Lakeway MUD in conserving our area’s water.
