Lakeway PD Taking Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs September 29 at the Justice Center

On September 29, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Lakeway Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Lakeway Police Department at 104 Cross Creek, Lakeway, Texas. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Police Chief Todd Radford encourages your participation in this event. “We are proud to be a part of this national initiative and encourage anyone who may be in possession of unwanted or expired pharmaceutical items to bring them to the police department for destruction. To-date Lakeway has collected 570 pounds of unused and outdated medications, keeping them off our streets and out of our environment.” The National Prescription Take-Back Initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs

are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards. Last April, Americans turned in 552,161 pounds—276 tons—of prescription drugs at over 5,600 sites operated by the DEA and nearly 4,300 state and local law enforcement partners. In its four previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners took in over 1.5 million pounds—nearly 775 tons—of pills. The collection will be quick, convenient, and secure, supervised by law enforcement. The collection is free and open to the public, no appointments are necessary. Participants may dispose of medication in its original container, crossing out personal information, or by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into the disposal box. This program is anonymous and no questions or requests for identification will be made. No effort will be made by the Lakeway Police Department to count, inventory, or log medications. Original Owner of Historic American Flag The City of Lakeway is searching for the original owner of a historic American flag that was brought to the Lakeway Heritage Center over two years ago. In the Spring of 2010, an American Flag was delivered to the Lakeway Heritage Center for proper disposal on Flag Day by the Lohmann’s Ford Chapter of the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). After taking a closer look at the flag city officials determined that the 48Star Flag is historic, in view of its age, and worthy of proper archival display. If anyone in the Lakeway area is aware of who the original owner of this historic flag might be please contact the city; it would be helpful if the owner was located to tell the “story” of the Lakeway connection to this patriotic artifact. If you have information about this historic American flag, please email history@lakeway-tx.gov or call 512-608-9533. In any responses, please describe the approximate size of the flag and where it came from.

Lakeway Heritage Center Seeking Silent Tribute Donor’s Identity

Lakeway city officials are seeking the identity of a person or persons who placed a silent tribute to those who died in service of their country at the foot of the American Flagpole, located at the Heritage Park Spirit of Freedom Monument, earlier this week. The silent tribute consists of authentic military memorabilia that has since been moved inside the Heritage Center for safekeeping and for future display to the general public. The city hopes to speak to the donor because archiving such mementos have greater meaning when the person or persons offering the tribute can be associated with the exhibit. Although the items appear to be of current-generation military issue, accompanying written material suggests a person or persons of the Vietnam era may have left the mementos (see photo). Anyone coming forward as the donor will be asked to identify the name written on the helmet. Any information regarding the above should be submitted to the Lakeway Heritage Center by telephone 512-608-9533 or email history@lakeway-tx.gov or contact City Hall at 512-314-7516 or cityhall@lakeway-tx.gov.

LAKEWAY’S BIG BAND BASH KEEPS SWINGING The best dance program in Central Texas is right here in Lakeway. Where else can you enjoy dancing and listening in a comfortable venue with a large dance floor – and a large band playing music of the Sinatra era. This increasingly popular monthly event will next be on Monday, September 10, from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, telephone. 261-1010. This free monthly event (donations to the band will be encouraged) offers a large dance floor, with plenty of tables. You may bring your own refreshments, if desired, as none are provided. There are no reservations—doors will open at 7:30 p.m. Well known singers (and Lakeway residents), David Cummings and Lisa Clark, are featured with The Republic of Texas Band. It is a 17- piece band, conducted by Kent Dugan. This band consistently appeals to dancers of many generations. Expect to hear a wide variety of favorite tunes with fresh arrangements. Get your dancing shoes polished, dress up a bit (not formal), and come out to dance and listen to some really great music. Anyone who has attended will tell you this monthly event shows why living in Lakeway is so much fun.

AKA Vocal Show Group Comes to Lakeway

The AKA Vocal Show Group is performing a 1940s and 1950s show, Big Band to Be-Bop, at the Lakeway Activity Center on September 21st and 22nd. The group is comprised of Cathy Rose, Mark King, Boyd Lawrence (all 3 were original members), Barbara Calderaro, Theresa Lingren, and Linda Bradshaw. Let’s take a trip down memory lane to remember these years, and see who the members of the show group are “also known as”. Every decade has its unique musical styles. The upbeat styles of the big band sound dominated for most of the decade, although bebop emerged in the late 1940s as a style of jazz in great contrast to the music of the big bands. Whereas Big Band/Swing music placed the primary emphasis on the orchestration, post-war/early 1950s era Pop focused on the song’s story and/or the emotion being expressed. Rock and roll dominated popular music in the latter half of the 1950s, and “The Blackboard Jungle” film’s use of Bill Haley and His Comets’ “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock” over its opening credits, caused a national sensation when teenagers started dancing in the aisles. Expect to hear all these styles, and more, from the AKA Vocal Show Group. The AKA Vocal Show Group, started by Cathy Rose in the summer of 2000, has only 3 of the original 9 members remaining. Those original pioneers, however, did leave a lasting name, deciding “there are so many names to choose from, since no one can agree, why we don’t just call ourselves, Also Known As.” Cathy soon started giving her Vocal Group choreography to ensure their audiences were even more entertained. They have played from Georgetown, to Snyder, from Marble Falls to Leander. Finally, we get to see them in Lakeway! You may also know Cathy Rose and Mark King as ‘Denise’ and ‘Cooper’ in the November Lakeway Players’ “Wild Dust; The Musical”. It was their first performance with the Lakeway Players, and they are looking forward to completing their new house in Lakeway and becoming even more involved in the community. It was not, however, Cathy’s first performance; she has appeared in the Zilker Theater 50th Anniversary Show, in On Golden Pond at Way off Broadway, at the Palace Theater, and as Will Rogers’ wife in the Will Rogers Follies at the Zilker Hillside Theater. Mark King is a vital member of the group, engineering all the music CDs, filming, and posting the YouTube choreography for the group. As anyone who is lucky enough to be one knows, the world doesn’t turn without engineers, so hug your favorite engineer today! You may also know Barbara Calderaro in many, many other ways. She has performed with the Lakeway Sing Along Group, and she may be best known in the Lakeway area as the lead singer in the jazz band, The 14

Lakeway Voice - September 2012

Highlights. She is the female vocalist in a 16-piece big band, the Lone Star Swing Syndicate, and has directed and starred in numerous Lakeway Players events, including Red, Hot & Cole, Broadway Comes to Lakeway, and Funny, You Don’t Look Like a Grandmother. She has also appeared in the TexArts’ production of The Music Man and Carousel. If you live in the Lakeway Area, it’s hard to say what you also don’t also know Barb as! You may also know Theresa Lingren from such Lakeway Players’ shows as Sylvia (lead character in the play of the same name), Belle in Wild Dust; The Musical, and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. She was also known as a Cincinnati Bengals Cheerleader from 1983 to 1990, as the coordinator for the Lakeway “Hits and Misses” Talent show, and as a member/choreographer for the Lakeway Charity Event, Dancing With the Stars. Linda Bradshaw might also be known as a member of the Lakeway Sing Alongs, as well as having performed in two Lakeway Players’ musicals, Funny, You Don’t Look Like a Grandmother, and Wild Dust; The Musical. She was also known as the emcee for two Public Access Television shows, Capital View, an Eye on Austin, and The Marci Lynn Variety Hour, filmed at the Saxon Pub and Steamboat Springs in Austin. Now the final, and one of the founding members of the AKA Vocal Show Group, Boyd Lawrence, may not yet be also known as anyone else to the Lakeway audience, but he will soon be. “Buck” Mitchum, age 15, has a horn span of 7 feet and is a cousin of Bevo XIII. The first general meeting of the year for Lakeway Associates of Seton will be Wednesday, Sept. 26, 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the home of Carol and Don Mitchum, 3519 Pawnee Pass South in the Lakeway area. The meeting is open to members and guests by paid reservation. The Mitchums raise Longhorn cattle that wander up to their house each afternoon to socialize. ³Our steer Buck¹ is 15 years old and is a cousin of Bevo XIII. Buck weighs about 2,000 pounds and his horn span is about seven feet. We also have two cows, a mother and daughter pair who were born at our place,² Carol Mitchum said. ³Chef Mike Thompson of Nola Kitchen will also be on hand to treat our members and guests with Cajun hors d¹oeurves,” Lakeway Associates President Kim Nearburg said. ³Although we like to have fun and socialize at our events, the purpose of this meeting is a serious one. Lakeway Associates of Seton raises funds to support Seton Shoal Creek Hospital, the only acute-care psychiatric hospital in Central Texas that treats children, teens and adults.² The meeting¹s agenda includes updates on the group›s annual fundraisers, the Seton Tea and Gala. Representatives from Seton Shoal Creek Hospital will provide the latest news and answer questions. Individuals from the Lake Travis area who need urgent psychiatric treatment are often referred to Seton Shoal Creek Hospital. Lakeway Associates of Seton is the hospital¹s largest donor. ³We raised over $35,500 in 2011-2012 through membership dues, meetings and special events,» Nearburg said. For reservations, please send a check for $20 per person, made out to ³Lakeway Associates of Seton,² and mail to Jean Hennagin, 111 Lakeway Drive, Lakeway, TX 78734. Please note «general meeting» on your check. To join Lakeway Associates of Seton or to renew membership, contact Beth Maher at 512-585-6606. Beto & the Fairlanes

On Saturday, September 29, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., the City of Lakeway’s Arts Committee will present a free concert (with dancing space) featuring one of the finest musical groups in America. You may bring your own refreshments (none will be provided). It will be at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. Call 261-1010 for information (no reservations). Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Let your imagination take you to a club, a festival or a crowded dance floor. The band on stage is Beto (Lakeway’s Robert Skiles) and the Fairlanes, and their sound is an original and refreshing new dialect of Texas Salsa music and Latin jazz. Celebrating 35 years together, Beto and the Fairlanes have created a tribe of loyal fans who continue to gather for rituals of dance, song and tropic frolic. This group is comprised of some of the leading professional musicians in Central Texas. One unifying principle that seems to draw both listeners and dancers to Beto’s concerts is the irresistible sense of fun that Beto and the Fairlanes are able to generate from the stage. Rarely do players of this level of musicianship come together and play with such obvious enthusiasm. The band’s high flyin’ horns, explosive percussion and Beto’s easy sense of humor take you to a celebration of musical traditions both north and south that meet naturally in the beat of their music. Both dancers and listeners will be delighted.

Lakeway's Own Artist

Austin has popularized itself with creative and innovative artists. Lakeway now has another talented artist to add. Catherine Jackson is now back “home” in Lakeway after living outside Chicago working as a successful fine artist and art educator. She earned her bachelor’s in fine art at Southern Methodist University, with an emphasis on printmaking and painting. She went on to Colorado State and Northern Illinois University to receive her Master’s in Fine Art. She furthered her education to also include a Master’s in Teaching. Since then, she has instructed art classes at museums, colleges and grade schools. She also has over 15 years of experience as a working artist and interior designer. She specializes in the technical ability to paint from photo realistic to whimsical styles. Her portfolio includes commissioned fine art paintings, indoor and outdoor murals, custom painted furniture and animal portraits. Her exhibition record is national in scope including Swedish American Hospitals, AT&T Center in Chicago, and Hilton Hotels. Her work has also graced the walls of numerous restaurants and small businesses. Catherine offers a myriad of creative ideas to turn your home or business into a work of art. From a photo of your favorite place or pet you want to transform into a painting, statement piece for your business to an old piece of furniture that needs a face lift. To see some examples of Catherine’s work, check out her website at cjacksonart.com or contact her by email at cathjack@att.net.
