Greetings Wood Glen Neighbors It’s mid August as I write this and it is HOT! And DRY! Still, not as bad as last year so I’ll take it. Looks like a lot of other parts of the country are experiencing the kind of extended drought that we went through last year and the after effects are terrible. Wishing them some rain and relief as well. Seems like a lot of new folks have moved into Wood Glen this summer. Maybe it’s just around my neck of the woods but I’ve seen several houses sell recently. We welcome these new residents and ask that they become familiar with the CCR’s (available on www.woodglen.org) and take pride in their new neighborhood. UPDATES FROM THE JULY BOARD MEETING INCLUDE:

Formal adoption of the fence on Creek Bend Dr. from FM 3406 to Falkirk Dr. and approval for the 2012 Fence Replacement project. This project will include the aforementioned section along Creek Bend, a small 63 foot section on Plantation Dr. (across from the Amenity Center), and the common areas bordering the power easement on Loncola Ct. and Henley Dr. The 90 foot gate section bordering the railroad tracks on Becca Teal is also included. Viking Fence is the contractor. For those of you who are affected by the fence replacement project please note that it is policy to not tie Association fences into privately owned fences. We had some complaints about this last year. The policy is meant to protect property owned by the Association and the fences are designed and built to stand on their own. Property owners are encouraged to think

about having metal corner posts installed on their fences as they are replaced to keep private fences separate and freestanding. The Board was briefed on outdoor light replacements at the Amenity Center and the installation of an exhaust fan in the pump room. The lights will include photocells to correct a problem with lights being left on during daytime hours and to save energy costs. The Board formally approved engaging the services of William Heyer, Attorney, as the firm managing collections on behalf of the Association. The Amenity Center Security System project update was discussed and is on track to complete on August 17th when the gate lock is changed out and access is by proximity card only. Residents are reminded to keep their existing key for the restrooms and the tennis courts. The intent is to get rid of the keys entirely but the tennis court portion is not budgeted for this year. We appreciate your patience during this transition. September is the time when the Board usually winds down budgeted projects and begins planning for the following year. In October we will have the Annual Meeting where we review the activities of the past year, report on finances and budget, and try to give a sense of what the Board is trying to accomplish and the issues faced by the Association. The meeting is open to all residents and all are encouraged to attend. We will be sending out meeting notices and further information when the date/time/location have been confirmed. November and December are usually devoted to budget forecasting and trying to plan projects for the next fiscal year. Available funds drive projects and of course we have to manage spending so that all of our assets (Amenity Center, fences, (Continued on Page 3)

Baiting For Fire Ants In The Fall While you may not be seeing too many mounds yet, fall is a great time to bait for fire ants. Baiting in the fall can help reduce the number of mounds that appear in the spring. Baits take time for results to be seen, so be patient and plan to schedule a baiting program for spring and fall. If you need fire ants killed quickly, you may want to use an individual mound treatment. Tips on using baits: •Make sure you have a bait, not a granular •Baits are either broadcasted over an entire property or sprinkled AROUND individual mounds for fire ants to pick up as food. Baits should NOT get wet. •Granulars are sprinkled on TOP of a mound and watered in to carry the pesticide into the mound to come into contact with the ants. •Broadcasting baits using a handheld spreader can save time and reduce the amount of chemical applied •Use the proper amount of bait and application equipment for your yard size •Read the label, it will tell you the rate of application and equipment required for application •Many baits are placed at a rate of 1-1 ½ pounds per acre •Many people put out more bait than is needed •Check that fire ants are foraging before putting out bait •Place a hotdog slice or potato chip near a mound, leave for 10 minutes, then check for fire ant activity •Do not use stale or old bait •Smell bait to make sure it is not spoiled; spoiled bait smells rancid •Store bait sealed in the original container •Try to get your neighbors to bait around the same time as you do; this will push the reinvasion boundaries further away from your property •Even better, organize a community-wide fire ant management plan, they can help reduce the amount of fire ants within the community & save money on chemical costs For more information or help with identification, contact Wizzie Brown, Texas AgriLife Extension Service Program Specialist at 512.854.9600. Wood Glen Caves, Crickets, Karsts -- Oh My! submitted by Elroy Haverlah Have you met the Karsts? On the corner of West End Place and Mesa Verde Drive. Yes, and also where Hidden Glen runs into Creek Bend. Actually, Karsts are not new neighbors. A karst is a landscape formed on limestone characterized by sinkholes, caves, and underground drainage. There are two in a neighborhood near you! Really. Several months ago I wrote about the deer feed plot, a two-acre piece of land which ranchers and former owners, Leroy and Ruth Lange, fenced in a small lot and planted oats to fatten up the deer. That feed lot was located just north of the Gary L. Smith Karst Preserve, which leads us to this month's observation about Wood Glen. Actually this installment is more geological than historical. I don't know who Gary L. Smith is. If anyone out there does know, please tell me. (more history!) So what is a "karst preserve?" Technically, karst is a type of topography formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks including limestone, dolomite and gypsum. Clear as mud? Back up to that part about "dissolution of rocks." How do you dissolve rocks?! You take rainwater and pass it through the atmosphere, where it mixes with carbon dioxide and becomes acidic. It takes a long, long time, and a lot of rainwater, but eventually the acidic water will create a network of passages as it drains into fractures and eats its way underground like liquid termites--dissolving rocks. Simple. This leads to the development of caves, sinkholes, springs and sinking streams: a karst! Karsified limestone can develop into an aquifer through which water flows like an underground stream. Perhaps the best known karst aquifer in central Texas is the Edwards Aquifer, source of drinking water for two million people from San Antonio to Austin. The rain drains mainly into the water table in Edwards County, in the Hill Country, emerges as springs below the hills, then re-enters below the surface (recharge zone), and flows on through the honey-combed limestone aquifer, like an Olympian doing the butterfly stroke.

The karst formations in our neighborhood are a microcosm of this larger system. The water that enters these formations directly quickly replenishes the water supply. The bad news is that this water bypasses the natural filtration process of slowly seeping through soil. So we need to be extra careful about not polluting these recharge areas or disturbing them. The Hidden Glen Karst Preserve contains the "Tres Amigos Cave," sealed off from the curious. When this area was being developed, exploration of the caves also revealed some endangered species living there, including some sort of blind cricket and who knows what other kind of creepy crawly critters. Please take care near these karsts. It has taken nature thousands of years to create these neighbors. Disturbing these native areas can endanger the human species, too! After all, how many neighborhoods can claim they are preserving the karsts?

Watermelon Lime Cocktail Summertime in the evenings ... watching the sunset, feeling the breeze, enjoying the end of the day. Put this in your hand and your enjoyment level will increase! It's light, refreshing and really flavorful!

Ingredients: • 1 C seedless watermelon, cubed • 1 t sugar • 2 oz Vodka {I love Tito's} • juice of 1 lime • splash of beer • lime and watermelon wedge as garnish

Directions: In a tall shaker muddle the watermelon and sugar together until well mixed and very juicy. Fill a glass with crushed ice then drain the watermelon liquid into the glass {it should fill it 2/3 full}. Add 2 oz vodka, lime juice and splash of beer. Mix and sip... delicious!
