Around Bee Cave New Organization Promotes Mothers and High School Sons Helping Others The recently founded Lake Travis chapter of the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) is off to an impressive start to the school year. Instead of logging hours with video games or out on the lake with friends, the YMSL young men have enjoyed many hours this summer helping others. In fact, since the chapter’s induction in May, Lake Travis YMSL members have already logged over 725 hours serving the Lake Travis community and surrounding areas. Young Men’s Service League is a mother-son organization dedicated to serving communities through philanthropic involvement and community leadership. The young men participate in a four year program of philanthropy, education and leadership. There are nearly 100 members in the new YMSL Lake Travis chapter and over 4,000 members nationwide. Chapter President Sam Reynolds and mother Brenda Adkinson founded the Lake Travis chapter after moving to the area from Plano where they were actively involved in their local YMSL chapter. “YMSL is a fantastic organization that teaches not only service to others, but also leadership and teamwork to help build strong men

LAKE TRAVIS FICTION WRITERS TO MEET OCT. 16

If you are writing a novel, want to write a novel, or if you are a published novelist and want the support and camaraderie of other fiction writers, come to an organizational meeting of the Lake Travis Fiction Writers, Tues., Oct. 16, 7 to 9 p.m. at The Old Bee Cave School House in Bee Cave. Pat Evans of Lakeway is organizing the group, which is sponsored by the Bee Cave Public Library. “There are a number of writers’ groups in Austin and many are outgrowths of the huge Writers League of Texas. But I wanted a group in my neighborhood to help fiction writers share ideas, gain support and receive input from other writers. I was thrilled when Bee Cave Public Library Director Barbara Hathaway enthusiastically offered to sponsor this group,” Evans said. Plans are for the group to meet monthly on the third Tuesday, but there is an option to meet at the library Saturday afternoons. “The Lake Travis Fiction Writers sounded like a wonderful group for our library’s interests. I initially offered our beautiful Bee Cave Library as a venue, but we have limited evening hours. Should the group decide to meet Saturday afternoons, perhaps alternating with Tuesday evenings, the library will provide a venue as a courtesy,” Hathaway said. Hathaway will be the group’s first speaker and will review the library’s varied services, including computers and research technology. “We’ll also do a roundtable discussion with attendees and learn about their experiences and novels. My role is to organize, publicize and lead the sessions, but this group will be about fiction writers, whether ‘wannabes’ like myself

or published novelists,” Evans said. At some meetings, members will submit works in advance for critique or bring works for short ‘read and critique’ sessions. At other meetings authors or service providers such as freelance editors or micro-publishers will speak. For the November meeting a panel of independent authors will present, ‘How to Publish Your Own Novel.’” Self-publishing is a hot topic, Evans says. She just returned from a writers conference in California where many workshops focused on self-publishing. “The message from this conference, as well as the Writers League of Texas conference this past summer, is that fiction writers need editors, both developmental and line editors. Otherwise, their self-published fiction will not stand a chance in the highly competitive market. There is a lot of junk being put online, and buyers are becoming wary. If writers puts novels ‘out there’ that are not well-crafted and edited, they run the risk of ruining their brands at launch.” Evans does not plan to self-publish. She is querying literary agents while continuing to edit her literary fiction novel. “I attended a workshop on polishing and editing, what’s current today, and found I’ve still got a lot of work to do. That’s why I want the support and interaction of other writers in this area, to share experiences but not have to drive thirty minutes to do it.” The Old Bee Cave School House is an updated facility with lighted parking, located in the southeast corner of the Shops at the Galleria (near Specs), between the Bee Cave police and fire stations at 13333 Texas 71. School News District Celebrates Completion of Improvements to Athletic Facilities

With an estimated 8,000 spectators in attendance, Lake Travis Independent School District officials marked the completion of improvements to various athletic facilities with a brief ribboncutting ceremony held September 7 at Cavalier Stadium prior to the Lake Travis High School varsity football home opener. The $2 million improvements— funded by interest earnings realized through the District’s 2006 bond program—include new field drainage, the installation of artificial turf, a new and larger press box, a new sound system and a new scoreboard at the LTHS main stadium. Other investments include the installation of new scoreboards at the LTHS upper track stadium, the baseball field and the softball field; the replacement of lighting at the LTHS baseball field; and the replacement of freshman lockers at the Cavalier Activity Center. “The new home of the Cavaliers is absolutely beautiful,” said Dr. Brad Lancaster, LTISD Superintendent. “In addition to aesthetics, the installation of artificial turf will significantly lower maintenance costs and provide year-round use by many of our extracurricular programs. Overall, the improvements to these athletic facilities will have a direct and lasting impact on our students and school community.” District voters approved a $126.8 million school bond election in September 2005. However, the package is referred to as the 2006 Bond program, marking the period when the bonds were actually sold at market. The five-year bond series included the renovation and expansion of Lake Travis High School, construction of a fifth elementary school (Serene Hills), expansion of both Lake Travis and Hudson Bend middle schools, improvements to various athletic facilities, construction of a transportation and distribution center, and land acquisition in anticipation of future growth and facilities. Fitch Ratings, a global rating agency which provides the world’s credit markets with independent and prospective credit

opinions, research, and data, recently affirmed the District’s bond rating at ‘AA+,’ the highest level given to public school districts. According to Johnny Hill, LTISD Assistant Superintendent for Business, Financial and Auxiliary Services, the District earned approximately $9.3 million in interest earnings on its 2006 Bond program. “The majority of those interest earnings have been used to cover inflationary costs of construction associated with the projects that were specified under the 2006 Bond program,” said Mr. Hill. “Subsequently, all projects within that bond are now complete.” The athletic improvements are part of the District’s Long Range Facilities Master Plan initially developed in 2009 but did not meet the criteria established by the citizens’ advisory committee to be included in the final 2011 Bond package. SET Engineering, Inc. of Mansfield, Texas provided engineering services related to the drainage improvements and installation of the artificial turf, while Austin-based Pfluger Associates Architects performed architectural and engineering work on the other athletic facilities contained in the overall project. The artificial turf was installed by FieldTurf USA, Inc., one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of synthetic turf. Earlier this summer, Lake Travis High School earned the UIL Lone Star Cup for team performance in district and state championships during the 2011-2012 school year. The Lake Travis Independent School District is one of 23 districts that has been invited to join the Texas High Performance Schools Consortium, announced Texas Commissioner of Education Michael L. Williams. According to Mr. Williams, the consortium will help develop innovative, next-generation learning standards, assessments and accountability systems. “The school districts selected to participate in the consortium are already known for their innovative work and are looked to by many as educational leaders,” said Mr. Williams. “This exciting project will help the Governor, legislative leaders and the Texas Education Agency craft a sound, well-thought out plan to move all Texas schools to the next performance level.” “This gives us an important seat at the table,” said Dr. Brad Lancaster, LTISD superintendent. “We are excited about the opportunities this initiative will present for our students, teachers, and parents as we work with our education commissioner to improve public education for all students. To be selected for membership in the consortium from the more than 1,000 school districts across the state is quite an honor.” The consortium will make recommendations in four key areas: Digital learning—Engagement of students in digital learning, including the use of electronic textbooks and instructional materials and courses offered through the Texas Virtual School Network; Learning standards—Standards that a student must master to be successful in a competitive postsecondary environment; Multiple assessments—Various methods of measuring student progress to keep students, parents and schools informed, and the actions consortium participants are taking to improve learning; and Local control—Ways in which reliance on local input and decisionmaking enable communities and parents to be involved in the important decisions regarding the education of their children. Districts submitted an application and went through a rigorous selection process to become part of the consortium. To be eligible to participate, a district or charter must have: • Received either national, statewide, or regional public acknowledgement for district-wide or campus-wide excellence in academic performance or innovative practice; • Supplied proof of compliance with TEA audit requirements; and • Met performance ratings requirements: only districts and campuses that have received Academically Acceptable, Recognized, or Exemplary ratings and open enrollment charter schools that are rated Exemplary in the 2010-2011 state accountability system are eligible. In selecting the participants, state law required the Commissioner to create a consortium that reflected the state’s diversity in district size and type, as well as student demographics. In addition to Lake Travis ISD, other districts invited to participate in the consortium include the following ISDs: Anderson-Shiro Consolidated , Clear Creek, College Station, Coppell, Duncanville, Eanes, Glen Rose, Guthrie Common, Harlingen C, Highland Park (Dallas County), Irving, Klein, Lancaster, Lewisville, McAllen, McKinney, Northwest, Prosper, Richardson, Roscoe, Round Rock, White Oak The Texas Education Agency will host the first consortium meeting next month. Lake Travis Youth Association

At its regular meeting on Monday, September 17, LTYA Board of Directors approved an ambitious development plan that could ultimately triple the amount of field space available to our kids. The plan includes moving LTYA’s main facility from the current Field of Dreams location to a new facility that would be purchased and constructed off of Bee Creek Road. LTYA already has the land for the new facility under contract with the current owners. The purchase of the new facility would be funded by selling the current Field of Dreams site. The new development plan is far from a “done deal,” but the Board of Directors remains confident and committed to bringing this vision to fruition. The Board of Directors has called a special meeting of the full membership of LTYA in order to present the details of this plan to our sports community and call for a vote approving its implementation. We hope that you will join us for this special presentation at a unique moment in our organization’s history. The meeting has been called for 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, at the Lakeway Activity Center. All LTYA Members are welcome to attend and vote. If you believe that you will likely attend this meeting, please contact LTYA and RSVP. Doing so will help our staff plan for the appropriate sized audience.

Lake Travis Republican Club Meeting

Texas Workforce CommissionerTom Pauken will be the featured speaker at the monthly meeting of the Lake Travis Republican Club to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012 at the Hills Country Club, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Appointed by Governor Rick Perry in March 2008, Pauken served as TWC Chairman until April 30, 2012, and currently serves as Commissioner Representing Employers. He brings decades of public ser vice experience to TWC, having held numerous leadership positions. In 2007, he served as Chairman of the Governor's Task Force on Appraisal Reform. He served in the White House Counsel's Office under President Reagan, and was appointed by the President to serve as Director of ACTION, where he founded the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program. ACTION is now known as AmeriCorps. Mr. Pauken also was instrumental in the implementation of First Lady Nancy Reagan's “Just Say No to Drugs” campaign. Commissioner Pauken is a United States Army veteran.

He received a commission in Militar y Intelligence and served in Vietnam as a Province Intelligence Officer and as a senior analyst for the Office of Strategic Research Analysis. Founder and President of Dallas-based TWP Inc., Mr. Pauken also has served as a board member of various public and private companies. He is a member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Commissioner Pauken is the author of two books: "The Thirty Years War: The Politics of the Sixties Generation" and his new book entitled "Bringing America Home." He holds a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University and a law degree from Southern Methodist University. He and his wife, the former Ida Ayala, have seven children and 12 grandchildren. The Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce presents the 1st annual Birdies by the Lake Golf Classic. This is a community event with divot digging, delectable food and a whole day of fun. This year’s Birdies by the Lake Golf Classic takes place on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at The Hills Country Club on the Flintrock Falls Course. Longtime resident and active Chamber Member, Chad Wilbanks, will serve as Chairman for the Chamber’s 11th Annual Birdies by the Lake golf classic. Chad is the owner of The Wilbanks Group, a public relations firm for business and politics. He is also a graduate of Leadership Lake Travis, active with the Lake Travis Independent School District, and most recently served as Chairman of the Lake Travis Youth Association. “We are thrilled to have Chad’s enthusiasm, his leadership, and his passion for success in chairing our annual golf classic this year,” stated Bob Stubbs, Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce Chairman.
