Greetings Wood Glen Neighbors Brrr! It’s good and cold as I write this in mid-December. I was beginning to wonder if winter was ever going to get here but it finally came just in time for the holidays. I welcome it. Seems like real winter weather enhances the spirit of the holidays somehow. Not sure how that works but it does and I’m happy and thankful for another year with my family. I hope you all got through the rush of the holidays and were able to finally sit back, relax, and enjoy the season for what it’s meant to be and I hope you were able to spend some memorable moments with your loved ones! Oh, and Happy belated New Year to you all! On to the business at hand! It’s January and that means a new year for the Association, a new budget, new projects, and probably a new set of problems to solve. That’s OK though, that’s why we’re here. It is the Board’s job to manage those activities and keep up with the maintenance, repairs, and enhancements and I’m very glad that we have some folks on the Board that take these responsibilities very seriously. Believe me, they are diligent and focused on the issues at hand. I bring that up for a reason and I’ve said this before; please consider serving on the Board if you can spare the time. We are losing two Board members over the next couple of months so there will be openings. I’ll be honest and say that I hesitated when I was first approached but I’m glad I made the time to do it. I’ve learned a lot about what it takes to keep this neighborhood going and I’ve had the chance to meet many of the neighbors. It’s been a good experience and I feel like I was able to make my share of contributions. And that’s the point; the experience, the opportunity to serve, and the chance to make an impact. Our organization is small enough that one individual can make a significant impact and that is what we need: people who care about keeping Wood Glen safe and beautiful and want to get involved. working on getting the right numbers in the budget and hope to have that approved at the December Board meeting. We’re also working with our Association Attorney on getting a couple of policy documents approved to comply with state law. Our electrical contractor completed their work on the electrical lines feeding the tennis court. We had an underground cable fail and it was necessary to dig a new ditch and install new conduit and new wiring. We were able to remove some old conduit that was lying on top of the ground that had bypassed another problem area as well. That conduit did not meet city code and needed to be permanently repaired. Now that the tennis court repairs are complete we will begin the final phase of the upgrading of the security system at the Amenity Center. The plan is to replace the current keyed gate lock with a card reader like we have on the pool gate. When that is complete we can throw away the keys and your proximity card will open both gates. We will probably aim for a February completion date on this project. The Social Committee held the annual “Cocoa with Santa” event on December 9th and by all accounts it was a big success! We were happy to hear that there was a good turnout this year. The kids always enjoy that one! I’d like to take a minute and recognize Darlene Snow who has been chairing the Social Committee for the past several months. A lot of planning and effort went into managing all the events this year and she has done a great job! Darlene is stepping down effective January 1st and we’d like to thank her for everything she’s done and the time that she has devoted to the Association! Anyone out there interested in serving on the Social Committee? If you are we’d like to hear from you! Think about it. As I mentioned last month I intend to step down as Board president in January so this may be my last newsletter. BROWN MARMORATED STINK BUGS Brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) were confirmed in Corpus Christi late in 2011. These insects are a new pest to Texas and relatively new to the United States. They are a true bug with piercing-sucking mouthparts and they have a large list of plants that they may feed upon including numerous ornamentals, vegetables and fruits. Brown marmorated stink bugs are shield-shaped, about 5/8 inch and mottled brown in color. The last two antennal segments have alternating light and dark bands. The edges of the abdomen, which are exposed from above, also have alternating light and dark bands. In addition to feeding on many ornamentals and crop plants, the stink bugs can be a nuisance pest and move into homes when temperatures drop. The insects have scent glands and can leave an odor behind in the home. Brown marmorated stink bugs usually cause small necrotic areas by feeding on plant tissue, but they may also cause stippling, seed loss or transmit diseases. Damage to fruit can be scarring, pitting, catfacing and sometimes changing the texture to be more mealy or grainy. We suspect that BMSB is in more places across Texas, but have not been noticed as a new pest species. They are very good at hitchhiking and could be transported into the state via travelers who come from infested areas to overwinter in Texas. We need your help! Please submit any suspected stink bugs (we need actual insects submitted for confirmation) to me or your local Extension office. You can email digital images or drop off/ mail insects for confirmation. Families who are able to help would then go online, pull up the calendar and fill in the date and the meal they would be providing.
