OUTLOOK News for the Residents of The Dominion

Tending to Tender Tropicals By Calvin Finch, Ph.D. Tropical plants are beautiful, but a little care needs to be taken during our infrequent cold weather. Although our winters are mostly mild, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast so you can prepare your landscape for a freeze. Here are some tips to keep in mind when dealing with tropicals: Bougainvillea and oriental hibiscus are very sensitive to cold. They decline with temperatures below 40 degrees. Covering them will sometimes do the job, but the best protection is a freeze-proof shelter. Citrus and other subtropical plants will usually survive our cold weather if they’re planted in sheltered locations such as the south side of a structure. Otherwise in temps below 26 degrees, cover them with cloth and carefully provide a heat source such as a mechanic’s light or poultry heat lamp under the cover. Rain or irrigation on a regular basis helps make landscape plants less sensitive to cold temperatures. But contrary to popular belief, eleventhhour applications of water just before the freeze don’t reduce freeze damage. To be effective, plants must have the time and growth conditions to absorb the water and integrate it with the salts and other materials within the plant cells that protect it from cold. The idea that the heat storage capabilities of water will help prevent freeze damage has a basis in science. However, the amount available from a lastminute splash of water is not an adequate substitute for proper planning.

THE OUTLOOK HOA Website Sponsorship

In these candidate interviews, it was made clear and stipulated in their three year paid contract sponsorship that their visual imprint "banner ad" on our homepage had to be high image, high quality, and its size or location could not detract from the homepage. The sponsor chosen was given sponsorship exclusivity and site visitors could link to their business specific web page. Selection of any sponsor would not indicate in any way HOA endorsement. A very short list of high quality and high image candidates were interviewed. Some showed high interest, some did not. The final determination was to have one exclusive sponsor for our homepage and one exclusive sponsor to our new online Resident Directory Sponsorship cost for the Home Page placement would have premium pricing over the sponsorship cost for the Resident directory. Kuper Sotheby's International was selected as our Home Page Sponsor and North Park VW and Lexus will sponsor the Resident Directory which will be launched in the February-March time frame. We welcome the sponsorship of both of these quality neighborhood organizations and thank them for their sponsorship. The Website Marketing Subcommittee will creatively introduce our new website through various mediums and several application specifc "how to" articles and even conduct some "hands-on training" for residents who sign up. We look forward to the upcoming introduction of the site, your feedback, and, as part of our strategy, put in place continuous improvement efforts for Dominion HOA site.

THE OUTLOOK STARTECH FOUNDATION AWARDS $1.99 MILLION TO ADMITTANCE TECHNOLOGIES, INC.

The Startech Foundation, UT Health Science Center announce $1.99 million Texas Emerging Technology Fund Award to Admittance Technologies, Inc. Funding for innovative technology allows early detection and prevention of heart failure without additional surgery. Startech today announced the investment of $1.99 million in Admittance Technologies, Inc. by the Texas Emerging Technology Fund (ETF). The investment is for development and commercialization of Admittance Technologies’ innovative technology platform, CardioVol™, which allows real-time blood volume measurement using existing pacemaker components and lead systems to both detect disease and treat patients with the devices. Jim Poage, president and CEO of Startech; David Weiss, Ph.D., vice president for research at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio; and Marc Feldman, M.D., founder and CEO of Admittance Technologies, participated in the media conference and ceremonial disbursement at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio. “We proudly announce Admittance Technologies as the most recent recipient of ETF funding in San Antonio,” Poage said. “This investment from the ETF is not only an investment in the future of Admittance Technologies but also in the many lives that will benefit from their technology through early detection and prevention of heart failure.” Dr. Feldman said, “We are thankful for the investment from the ETF and the expertise that Startech provided during the process. This funding allows us to move forward with the major proof of concept studies that are necessary to commercialize CardioVol™, our flagship product. CardioVol™ is a technology platform that is ahead of the curve by providing the only device that can determine the hemodynamic stability of ventricular tachycardia, the only available therapy to tune the timing of pacemakers previously implanted in these patients, the earliest detection of impending heart failure, and technology that requires no additional surgery because we are piggybacking into devices already indicated in all patients with weakened hearts.” Dr. Weiss stated, “We are always excited to announce new medical technology that was developed in collaboration with our researchers. Investments from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund are vital in allowing our researchers to take their ideas from concept to commercialization.” Dr. Feldman is a professor of medicine and engineering in the Janey and Dolph Briscoe Division of Cardiology at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio as well as the co-winner of the 2010 Chancellor’s Entrepreneurship Award for The University of Texas System. Dr. John Porterfield is the Chief Scientific Officer of Admittance Technologies. Drs. Jonathan Valvano and John Pearce are both scientific advisors to Admittance Technologies and professors of electrical engineering at UT Austin.

THE OUTLOOK Headaches Submitted by Dr. Jeff Echols I’ve been treating headaches for over 25 years and I believe they are very misunderstood by the general public. It’s only human nature to have a reason for why something is occurring, so when people get a headache they usually try to determine the reason for their headache. Some of the reasons I hear are quite amusing. “My husband gives me a headache, … my boss, …my kids.” “I sit at a computer all day and THAT is the reason I have a headache.”Sometimes people think that headaches are just normal and everyone gets them. I can assure you that headaches are not normal. Headaches are a sign that there is something wrong. Just like all symptoms are signs that something is wrong. Headaches can be caused by a lot of different things. They can be caused by exotic and dangerous things like a brain tumor, but more often they are caused by common things. The most common reason is pressure on the nerves of the neck that radiate back into the head. When the bones of the spine are misaligned it will put pressure on the delicate nerves that exit the spine. This will in turn cause the muscles of the neck and shoulders to become

tight and develop knots in them You can actually reach up and feel the knots in your muscles. These knots are not normal and are a sign of spinal misalignment and soft tissue damage. Once the spinal misalignments are corrected the muscles relax more and the headaches are gone. Just for fun, I sometimes ask a headache patient when was the last they had a headache, once they have had their spine corrected. They will usually say something like “Gosh I haven’t had a headache in months”. I will ask them if they got divorced and they will look at me funny and say “NO, why?” You said your husband was the cause of your headaches! “Oh I guess I was wrong!” So headaches are not normal, but are very common. They’re usually caused by nerve pressure built up in the neck which causes tight muscles in the neck and shoulders. They can usually be corrected with gentle chiropractic therapy. You should get this checked even if the headaches are mild because if the bones of the spine are misaligned it will cause arthritic changes to form in the bones of the spine which will limit your ability to move and bend as well as other difficulties. Be proactive about your health.
