After introductions by our vice president, Arthur Oden (Phil Anderson couldn’t attend because of family commitments), a quorum was established. Bill Carpenter and Mary Beth Kreml were elected. Thank you to both of them. Security: Officer Harrah and Sergeant Walker of Precinct 4 reported that during March there was one burglary on Terrawren by a known suspect. A large portion of the property was recovered and returned. Criminal mischief on Ashmere resulted in a front door being damaged before the suspect fled. One who is close by is complying with the law and verifying with the Constable’s office. Other resident questions concerned: what to do if a neighbor’s flood light is a nuisance; what is “unreasonable” noise; placing a “No Trespassing” sign at your property. Call the Constable if you have a problem. We thank our Constables. The Constables write many speeding tickets. Yes, we have many non-residents traveling through TNW, but they are not the only ones who speed. We, the people who live here and want to keep the neighborhood safe for all, need to SLOW DOWN! The speed limit on all our TNW roads is 20 mpg. Vehicles driving above 20 threaten walkers, bike riders, and others driving the speed limit. Any traffic tragedy in TNW would be an unspeakable tragedy if it were caused by one of our own neighbors. Summer is coming. More kids on the roads. Please SLOW DOWN! you pay more for water if you are a big water user. So don’t water your yard if it is not needed. All residents are welcome at the MUD meetings held every 3rd Thursday at 6:00 pm at our clubhouse. There is a water conservation article on our TNW website under the MUD area.Please register from our TNW website for the MUD’s emergency notification system. Treasurer: Peter Vogel presented our financial report. We have budgeted to spend $555,000 and estimate revenue to be $580,000 and plan to have $183,000 in savings at the end of 2013 – barring any unforeseen expenses. If you wish to have a copy of the detailed report, please contact any Board member. All our committees reported: Newsletter – Shirley Willis, Editor, reminds us to send in biographical information and a picture of your graduating senior by June 12. All residents can view the newsletter on the first of the month by going on the Peel, Inc., website. This is our new publisher who doesn’t charge us for printing or mailing but does control the advertising and copy space. Beautification –Bill Heuer agrees that bushes would be nice on the west side of TC Jester. This is being investigated. Architectural Review – Dan Winters and Tom Laarman report that we are submitting Architectural Review Forms and that 26 have been approved since January. Villa Nova has many new homes. Unfortunately, we have some abandoned/foreclosed homes in TNW. If these are becoming unsightly or even a danger due to unsupervised swimming pools, please report this to Chaparral Management. You can also report unattended swimming pools to the Harris County Health Department www.hcphes.org. Clubhouse – Maria Carra reports our clubhouse is an asset to TNW with lots of usage. it. Diane Moynihan will be distributing wristbands for pool usage. The pool will be open at 10 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting in July (See swimming pool rules). Website – Martin Littman reports that there is plenty of space on the website to publish information. We could use it to report lost items or animals as well as items for sale. Contact Martin at martin@askmartin.com. Welcoming – Cheri Hornsby continues to distribute welcome packets, Tom Harrington coordinates our Security, and Scott Wittmer handles the announcement boards. Board members are investigating the future placement of stoplights at Glenmere and Ashmere on TC Jester. We are hoping to convince the county that we do not need two stoplights so close together. The Board is also investigating the possibility of low income/Federally subsidized housing being placed on Kuykendahl between Louetta and Spring Cypress. If you wish more information, contact our Texas Representative Debbie Riddle. Peter Vogel and Dan Winters won the $50 raffle prizes. Whispering Pines 2013 Swimming Pool Information

Wristbands will be distributed this summer to residents in good standing allowing them to use the pool facilities. All residents may use the pool Memorial Day Weekend…no wristband will be required for admittance. Beginning June 1, 2013 the pool will be open for the season. Wristbands must be worn by all residents (unless a minor with a parent) to use the pool.

We would like to feature our graduating seniors in our July issue of the Whispering Pines. This is a great accomplishment and we would like to congratulate each of them by an individual recognition. Please submit to the editor a short article (about 6 lines of type) with the student’s name, school, and accomplishments from his/her senior year, as well as any future plans. Whispering Pines How to Cut Your Water Use in Half Most turf and other plant problems are related to watering techniques and issues. Most people water far too much. How often should you be watering now? I don’t know—it depends on your location, the soil, plant types, organic or synthetic program, etc. Hopefully you are organic and thus have lower water needs. Here are some other tips: First, turn the irrigation control off automatic and on to manual. Then, the system won't run unless you push the button. You’ll save lots of water, the soil will be healthier, and your landscaping will look better. This is as much a no-brainer as not catching the grass clippings in order to feed the beneficial microbes. Water deeply and infrequently as possible so that the soil pulses or breathes. About 1" of water per week in the summer is a good starting point. Then, adjust from there. Light, frequent watering of grass and other plants produces weak, shallow root systems that encourage weed invasion and does not effectively use soil nutrients and moisture. Ideally, it is best to water just before wilt begins. Early morning is usually the best time of day—late afternoon is the worst. Morning is usually the coolest

part of the day and when wind is lowest, and there will be less waste through evaporation. Go organic. The single most effective way to save water is to go organic. Healthy plants in healthy soil have healthy biodiversity of beneficial soil life that basically expand the root system to be more efficient at accessing water and nutrients. More tips: 1. Plant adapted plants—natives are best. 2. Use compost, earthworm castings, organic fertilizer and dry molasses. 3. Avoid synthetic fertilizers and toxic chemical pesticides. 4. Add volcanic rock minerals; i.e., lava sand, zeolite, basalt, azomite, etc. 5. Mulch all bare soil with shredded native tree trimmings. 6. Water at night or very early morning for best results. No, that doesn't encourage disease—it rains at night. 7. Be careful of drip irrigation. Water has a habit of seeking the path of least resistance. The result can be wet and dry spots. Above ground sprinkling is usually best. (Continued on Page 7)

DISPOSAL OF HAZARDOUS WASTE Harris County now has its own permanent Household Hazardous Waste disposal facility located at 290 and Gessner that is open to all Harris County residents that live in the un-incorporated areas. This facility is run by Cheryl BurtonFentress, and she is the best person to contact for anything related to HHW. Cheryl has been involved in and around this industry for many years and is considered an expert in the field.
