Drowing is Preventable The Texas weather is warming up. Summer is almost here. Pools will soon open and the cool water will be calling your name. You can almost hear your kids laughing and the playing in the pool. Your family deserves to have many Best Day Ever moments in the water this summer. Please do not let those moments be ruined by the sound of a life guard whistle blast or the need to do CPR in order to save your child’s life. Most families love a trip to the swimming pool, the lake or the beach during the summer…but the water can be deadly for a child. Did you know that drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for children between the ages of 1 and 14, with kids under the age of 5 at even higher risk? Colin Holst’s parents did not know either. Sadly, June 13th marks the 5 year anniversary of his drowning in a public, lifeguarded pool in Austin. Since Colin’s drowning in 2008, Central Texas-based Colin’s Hope has become a nonprofit leader in water safety and drowning prevention. (Continued on page 3)

Drowning is Preventable (Continued from Cover Page) My name is Alissa Magrum and I am the Executive Director of Colin’s Hope. But I am also a parent to 8 year old Ella. So, from one parent to another, please listen to this message. It is simple but filled with purpose: DROWNING IS PREVENTABLE. YOU can help protect your children. Following a series of simple water safety tips creates multiple layers of protection. These layers WILL keep children safer in and around the water and CAN prevent drowning. The first 3 of these tips are KEY. • Practice constant visual supervision. Always assign an adult “water guardian” whose ONLY responsibility is to watch children who are in, near and around the water. If that water guardian needs to take a break, they must transfer their “watching” duty to another adult. • Learn to swim. Enroll children (and adults too) in formal swim classes. For kids under the age of 4, taking formal swim lessons reduces the risk of drowning by 88%. • Wear life jackets. Children who cannot swim should ALWAYS wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when in and around the water. You can see additional tips, as well as more information on water safety and drowning prevention, on our website at www.colinshope. org...
Lakewood Grove Each year, Colin’s Hope volunteers stuff and distribute 75,000 water safety packets to families in zip codes that have been targeted due to the high number of near drowning and drowning in recent years. This life saving information along with a Peel Inc. ad campaign, a Reagan National Advertising billboard campaign and a presence at many community events is helping to raise water safety awareness to prevent children from drowning. WE ALSO NEED YOUR HELP. PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION with family, friends, neighbors, teachers, babysitters…everyone! We have seen the difference that being aware and being prepared can make. Communities that have received our water safety information in prior years have seen child drowning and near drowning in their areas reduced to zero! Please visit www.colinshope.org to find out how you can get involved in your own community. Find us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, subscribe to our monthly newsletter or even support our efforts with a donation. We envision a world where children do not drown. Please share that vision and together we will get there. Wishing you the SAFEST AND BEST SUMMER EVER, Alissa Magrum Executive Director, Colin’s Hope

Lakewood Grove What We Are Reading…in the Lakewood Grove Book Club In April, we read The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty, a captivating novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in 1922 and the summer that would change them both. The club participants particularly enjoyed the discussion of the time period—just after women got the vote—as well as talking about the clothing styles, changing social mores, the prohibition of alcohol and its impact on society. May’s book is Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini. The club members also picked out our summer reading series. We will read The Linen Queen by Patricia Falvey in June and Me Before You by Jojo Moyes in July. Our August meeting is always a movie—so stay tuned. This one doesn’t even require that you read the book from which the screenplay was taken. So it’s a perfect time to join us and get to know your local book club members. We’d love to have you! For more information, contact Trudi Trainer at trudi.trainor@ sbcglobal.net or Kay Albrecht at innovations-ka@comcast.net.

Hosting a Foreign Exchange Student By Heather Wells
Who hasn’t dreamed about walking among the Egyptian pyramids, or soaking in the sun on a beach in Spain, or wandering along the Great Wall of China? Every parent wants to give their children a taste of the world, but the economic reality of international air travel for a family, not to mention hotels, passports and food, makes it tough for most of us to consider except in our daydreams. There is a way to give your children the world – without leaving your living room. How? Host a foreign exchange student from a country you’ve always admired! Fascinated by France? Curious about China? Intrigued by India? By welcoming an international student from one of these countries into your home, you instantly open a portal to a far off land. “My husband and I have been hosting for the past three years and have enjoyed every minute of it!” said Vicki Odom, an Ayusa host mom from Pearland, Texas. “The various students we’ve had (Continued on page 9)

The students also love learning about life in Texas and participate in a good deal on community service. Their latest service projects was volunteering to be Super Scoopers at the San Antonio Battle of Flowers Parade.” Foreign exchange students come from all over the world. Ayusa matches host families with students from more than 60 different countries including Argentina, China, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, Japan, Lebanon, Norway, Pakistan, Sweden, Thailand, Tunisia and Turkey. All high school foreign exchange students are fully insured, bring their own spending money, and are proficient in English – and all high school exchange programs are regulated by the U.S. Department of State. “We welcome host families of all shapes and sizes – families with young children, families with no children, empty nesters whose children have left home, single parents and non-traditional families,” says Connie Coutu, Regional Manager of Ayusa, a non-profit that promoting global learning and leadership through foreign exchange and study abroad opportunities for high school students. “The key requirements for a host family are to provide a safe and nurturing home environment, genuinely love children, and have a desire to learn more about a different culture.”

Lakewood Grove Volunteer host families provide foreign exchange students a nurturing environment, three meals a day and a bedroom (either private or shared with a host sibling of the same gender). Each host family and student is supported by a professionally trained community representative who works with the family and student for the entire program. All interested host families must pass a criminal background check and a home visit by an exchange organization. Interested host families are required to fill out an application, pass a background check and interview with a local exchange program representative in their homes. Once accepted to a program, host families can view profiles of students to find the right match for their family. “Hosting an exchange student is a life-changing experience – for the student, the host family, and the host community,” says Coutu. “There is no better way to teach your children about the world around them than through welcoming an international high school student into your home.” Ayusa is currently accepting applications for families to host an exchange student for the 2012 – 2013 school year. For more information about hosting a high school foreign exchange student, please contact Ayusa at 1.888.552.9872 or by visiting the website at www.ayusa.org.
