WOMEN’S CLUB MEMBERS DOUBLE TEAM TO SUPPORT CITY’S

Members of the Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway floated their way on two separate entries in the city’s Fourth of July parade. Club members decorated their own float in colorful themes of red, white and blue, complete with umbrellas to shade riders from the Texas heat. And members who take part in the local performance group “Dottie’s Follies” helped kick off the parade on the City of Lakeway 50th Anniversary float. organization, open to women who live in the City of Lakeway, Lakeway ETJ and Villiage of the Hills. The club hosts engaging speakers each month from September through April. Members also take part in special-interest groups that range from books clubs to gardening, investments, sing-along and a variety of social events. Dues are $30 annually. Around Lakeway Cool Dancing At The Lakeway Big Band Bash The ballroom at the Lakeway Activity Center (105 Cross Creek, telephone. 512-261-1010) is the place to be to enjoy cool music in a cool place. Lakeway’s Big Band Bash is a great place to dance and/or listen to some wonderful live big band music. This popular event is on the second Monday of each month, from 8 to 10 p.m. (the next one is on August 12). This is a free event (donations to the band are encouraged). There is a large dance floor and plenty of tables. You may bring your own refreshments, if desired, as none are provided. There are no reservations—doors open at 7:30 p.m. Kent Dugan’s 17-piece orchestra, The Republic of Texas Band, features well known singers (and Lakeway residents) David Cummings and Lisa Clark. This band consistently appeals to dancers of many generations. Expect to hear a wide variety of favorite tunes, mostly from the Sinatra era, with fresh arrangements. Get your dancing shoes polished, dress up a bit (not formal), and come out to dance and listen to some really great music. Anyone who has attended will tell you this monthly event shows why living in Lakeway is so much fun.

The Art of Linda Buikema ON DISPLAY The Lake Travis Community Library will display the acrylic collage paintings of Linda Buikema during the month of August. This exhibit is the third in the library’s new Rotating Artists program. “I enjoy painting whimsical abstractions of people, pets, landscapes and objects in bright, happy colors. My paintings come in all sizes and in all mediums, and if they make you smile, I’m a happy artist,” said Buikema. “I have a BFA in painting from The University of the South, and 50 years of making art. Although I paint every day, I don’t take my art too seriously.” Linda and her husband recently moved to Lakeway with their three legged cat. She looks forward to getting to know all the wonderful artists in the Austin area. Linda Buikema’s paintings will be on display in the library meeting room from Wednesday, July 31st through Thursday, August 29th. To see more of her work, please visit her website at lindatoddbuikema.com.

Around Lakeway Lakeway Donors Support Connect Africa

Submitted by Brenda D. Rickert Dr. Lynn Auerbach, a Clinical Psychologist and founder of Connect Africa, was a house guest of Rita and Jerry Hietpas in June. She visited Lakeway to share her experiences of living part of the year in Jogo, Uganda, a village outside of the capital, Kampala, and of building a library for the children and families. The purpose of the Connect Africa Foundation is creating education and business opportunities to sustain self sufficient citizens of Africa. Thanking the generosity of many donors, she said, “I am overwhelmed by your community. I am grateful for Jerry and Rita and their continuing dedication, as well as, their friends, Shelly Ansbach, Barbara Helmueller, and Sylvia Sudermann who hosted parties. The Lakeway Men’s Breakfast Club gave me time to talk; I made a presentation at the Heritage Center; the Lake Travis Community head librarian, Morgan McMillan, met with me; the Rotarians gave me excellent information; and the Emmaus Church allowed me to speak at Masses.” Our construction goal is $25,000. To date, you have donated, $20,134 toward building a library. As I write this, I shake my head in amazement. In Uganda, our families say “people who do not even know me, care about me”; and now, I say that to each of you, as well. Thank you for caring about people very far away from your life, who need your helping hand in order to walk a new path in their life. The spirit continues to grow every day; and we are so appreciative of our new friends in Lakeway. For more information, contact: Jerry Hietpas at (512)589-6746; tax deductible donations, http://www.connect-africa.org/

Around Lakeway

SEEKING OUT WWII VETERANS

The World War II Obelisk located in Lakeway’s Heritage Park originally had the names of 485 local veterans who served in the armed services during that war. The Lake Travis Standing Military Committee, put together to work on military and veterans’ events and issues, is now seeking out at least three dozen of those veterans who remain in the Lake Travis area to participate in an all-expense paid two-day round-trip flight to visit the war memorials in Washington, DC. The trip is expected to take place in Oct. or Nov. 2013. Of the 485 names, merely 125 are still listed in the official Lakeway telephone book – thus narrowing the local search for candidates to participate in the flight. So far, a one month effort has resulted in barely one-dozen candidates who have submitted formal applications. Many are incapable of making the trips for various reasons. The committee is therefore extending the search to include all areas within the limits of the Lake Travis Independent School District boundaries. If you are a veteran who somehow has been missed in the search, or know of a veteran who might be interested in making the trip, please contact Mike Boston at 512-261-4733 or twobostons1@sbcglobal.net, or Dave Benson at 512-261-9279 or daveon1tee@austin.rr.com for further information. The official Honor Flight Austin not-for-profit organization that sponsors the flight is also seeking Guardians to accompany each veteran on the two-day trip. While spouses are not permitted on the trip, in special cases children or grandchildren of the veteran may be considered. However, the Guardian is required to pay his or her expenses of $400, which covers the flight, all meals, and lodging.
