SAFETY TIPS FOR THE SUMMER

• Whether you just moved here or not, it’s important that your children learn not only their street name, but street number also. If you just recently moved to the area, help your children to memorize their new phone numbers. If they have cell phones, take the time to make sure and update their contacts with this information in addition to committing the information to their memory. • If your children ride the bus to school, visit the bus stop and learn the bus number. Neighborhood Watch Block Captains Welcome to our newest Block Captain, Catherine Collier, for Durlston Court. With all the new homes being built in The Reserve we have updated our street lists that now need Block Captains. Very little time is involved to serve as a block captain and the rewards of a safer neighborhood are certainly worth the effort! School starts in August, so now is the time for drivers to pay closer attention to the school zones in the neighborhood. We want to remind you that the speed limit in a school zone is 20mph and traffic fines double! Other changes to be aware of include; • Children behaving unpredictably • School Bus Stops • Crossing Guards – please obey the guards! Remember, they are there for the safety of you and your children • New areas of traffic congestion • Be prepared for delays • Use of cell phones in schools zones is prohibited! Please give yourself extra time in the mornings and midafternoons and remember if you are traveling in a school zone to slow down.

Cedar Park proactively entering Stage 3 watering restrictions Watering allowed once per week, schedules changing August 1 For further information, visit www.cedarparktexas.gov/water.

Due to persistent low lake levels, the City of Cedar Park is proactively entering Stage 3 Watering Restrictions on August 1. This means outdoor watering is allowed only one day per week, according to assigned mandatory watering schedules. Watering schedules are also changing. The City of Cedar Park is taking this proactive measure to extend our water supply, as low lake levels persist, and also to get people into the habit now of watering one day a week. Lake Travis is quickly approaching the 618-foot level that triggers the Stage 3 Watering Restrictions per our Drought Contingency Plan and mandated water use reductions by the LCRA, and rather than waiting and risking dipping below that minimum level, the City is entering Stage 3. Katherine Woerner, Director of Community Affairs, who oversees the City of Cedar Park’s Resource Efficiency Division, says, “We are being responsible and proactive by entering Stage 3. It is very important that our customers get used to their new watering schedule now and adhere to it. Together, we can make it through this drought and not overburden our water supply and system.” Woerner says that the City of Cedar Park will leave Stage 3 when lake levels rise for a sustained period of time, and in accordance with the conditions outlined in its Drought Contingency Plan and LCRA requirements. Woerner adds, “While this spring’s rain showers have helped renew our yards and landscapes, the rainfall has not been hard enough and long enough to raise lake levels. This year is forecast to be yet another year of extreme drought conditions with belowaverage inflows into the lakes, and Central Texas continues to face

potentially the worst drought on record.” THE NEW STAGE 3 WATERING RESTRICTIONS SCHEDULE, EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 2013, IS AS FOLLOWS: • Residents east of Lakeline Boulevard: Odd addresses water on Saturday; even addresses water on Sunday; the permitted hours to water remain the same - before 10 a.m. and after 7 p.m. • Residents west of Lakeline Boulevard and in the Blockhouse subdivision: Odd addresses water on Wednesday; even addresses water on Thursday; the permitted hours to water remain the same - before 10 a.m. and after 7 p.m. • Businesses east of Lakeline Boulevard: Friday, before 10 a.m. and after 7 p.m. • Businesses west of Lakeline: Tuesday, before 10 a.m. and after 7 p.m. • Using a handheld hose equipped with a positive pistol grip nozzle or other device that automatically shuts off water flow when the hose is not being used, or handheld buckets is permitted on any day and at any time • Outdoor watering by drip irrigation or soaker hose is allowed only on designated watering day CUSTOMERS MUST CONTINUE TO REFRAIN FROM WATER WASTE, ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING REGULATIONS:

How to execute The Half Volley

In previous newsletters, I offered tips on how to hit a forehand groundstroke, a two-handed backhand, one-handed backhand, forehand volley, the two handed backhand volley, and the serve. In this issue, I will give you instructions on how to execute the half volley, which is usually played between the base line and the net. The player is not close enough to the net to hit it on the air and/or does not have enough time to retrieve back to hit it on the top of the flight. The ball is usually hit right after it hits the ground. In these pictures student Camille Palafox demonstrates the proper form and technique. Photos by Charlie Palafox. Step 1: The Split step: When the player realizes that she will have to play the ball right after it hits the ground, the player will stop and take the split step by bouncing off her toes at the same time and let her body lean forward to react to the ball. Both hands are on the racket so it can react to either move to the left or to the right. Eyes are focused on the incoming ball. Step 2: The Back Swing: The secret of the half volley is to take the racket back early and have a short back swing. Also, it is critical to lay the wrist back slightly to allow for a good point of contact in front of the body. The player will then bend her knees and lunge forward to hit the ball as soon as it hits the ground. Notice the concentration of keeping her eye on the ball. Step 3: The Point of Contact: As soon as the ball starts to rise, the player will make the contact with the ball and will aim to go away from the net person. Her eyes are focused on the point of contact and the left hand is still close the body for better balance. The left knee is still bent and the left toe is pointing toward the point of contact. Step 4: The Finish: Once the ball leaves the racket, the left knee has now almost straightened up and the follow through is above the players’ head. This will allow the ball to go high over the net and will land deep toward the baseline. The opponent will have to back off to hit the next ball, or will also be forced to hit another half volley. The left hand is ready to hold the racket on the handle to anticipate the next shot, which probably will be the volley.
