HOWDY WOOD GLEN I hope everyone is enjoying the summer. Thank you to Donna Tucker and Eric Boren for the years of service they have provided to Wood Glen. Both have recently resigned from the Board and their knowledge and insights will be missed. That leaves us with opening on the Board to be filled. The Board generally meets once a month for about 2 hours in the evening. If you are interested in joining the Board, please let me or another board member know. It was brought to my attention that there have been a number of people going door-to-door trying to sell things. The city of Round Rock has several ordinances in place regarding door-to-door activities. The ordinances distinguish between peddlers, canvassers, and solicitors. Peddlers are trying to sell a good or service and are required to apply for and obtain an identification card from Round Rock Police Department and to carry the card with them while peddling. Canvassers are those trying to enlist for or against a particular religion, philosophy, ideology, political party, issue or candidate. Canvassers may accept donations for their cause but that is not their primary goal. Solicitors are trying to obtain a donation to a particular patriotic, philanthropic, social service, welfare, benevolent, educational, civic, fraternal, charitable, political or religious purpose, and may sell a good or service if that is not their primary goal. Canvassers and Solicitors are not required to obtain an identification card, but may do so. Further, city code requires that Peddlers, Canvassers, and Solicitors leave a property where a “No Soliciting” sign is displayed, stay on the walkway except at express invitation of the resident, and only enter a property between 9AM and 8PM. We can work together to keep Wood Glen a safe and pleasant place to live by reporting violations of these and other city codes to the police department. There have been a number of complaints about parking on the street lately. The Wood Glen CC&Rs encourage first parking

in the garage, then parking in the driveway, and only temporarily parking on the street. Specifically, the CC&Rs prohibit storing vehicles on the street, with storage defined as parking for more than 48 hours in a 72 hours period. We understand that in some situations where parking on the street is necessary, such as when you have more cars than will fit in the garage and driveway. For example, I have a two-car garage, and should be able to park 2 cars in the garage, and two in the driveway. If I have 5 cars to park, I would need to park one on the street and would run into conflict with the CC&Rs. The Board recognizes this challenge, and working on a way to permit the parking on the street of excess cars, provided parking in the garage and driveway is fully utilized. In the meantime, if you have enough spaces, please strive to park in your garage or driveway. If you have to park on the street because the garage and driveway are fully utilized, please be courteous to your neighbors and park in front of your house rather than in front of your neighbors. While we are on the subject of parking, the CC&Rs also prohibit the parking of commercial vehicles. I don’t believe the intent is to prohibit the parking of personal vehicles that display your business information. Rather, if you have a vehicle, such as a truck that has been outfitted to with a rack or storage system for taking supplies to a job site that you need to park at your house overnight, please park it in your garage rather than the driveway or street. The last thing I want to touch on this month is litter around the Amenity Center. Sun Terra, our landscaping crew, picks up the trash when they mow. As such, if there is trash that gets dropped or blows in from somewhere else, it can sit around for up to a week before it is dealt with. We can all work together to keep the areas free of trash by picking up things that we see while we are there. Stay safe, and enjoy your summer. - David Schell

Wood Glen Two Board Members Retire

Donna Tucker served on the board a total of 5 ½ years. She was president from September, 2008 until December, 2011.

Eric Boren served a total of 3 years and filled the role of president from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012.

Knowledge, Integrity, & Hard Work.

Two Wood Glen Property Owner Association directors retired from the board at the June, 2013 meeting. Donna Tucker and Eric Boren both served positions as voting members and later as president. Eric further served as vice president after David Schell took over in January, 2013, assisting him as he transitioned into his new responsibilities. Donna Tucker moved to Wood Glen in 2001 when she was driven from her home of eleven years in Egger Acres by a toxic mold problem. Donna says the number one “must have” feature she was looking for in a new home was an absence of mold. “We literally just looked at the house as, this will do! - and in a few weeks, we noticed what a beautiful neighborhood we had stumbled into!” Donna’s administration dealt with feral hogs destroying lawns and landscaping, reducing the fire hazard in our greenbelts and oversaw the successful effort to amend our CC&Rs to allow temporary basketball goals. She also began a long term project to replace association fences which were consuming an increasing share of the maintenance budget. Donna never missed an opportunity to encourage (some might say cajole) Wood Glen residents she encountered to step up and volunteer. Eric Boren was one of her recruits. Twice retired – once from the Air Force where he served in the military police - and a second time from Dell, Eric provided strong leadership and headed up several big projects. He continued the fence replacement begun under Donna and personally took on several new ones. Two of which were the upgrade of keyed gates on our pool and tennis courts to a keyless entry system, and new security lighting and cameras at the amenity center in an effort to curb vandalism. The association also held its first board election at the annual meeting in 2012 as part of an effort to increase the ways in which members can directly participate in the governance of their association. Of course, there have been many volunteers over the years, for which we are grateful. And there’s always room for more! Please contact David Schell if you would like to step up and fill a newly vacant seat.

Dead spots in the lawn? Look for chinch bugs‌. Chinch bugs often appear in Texas lawns during hot, dry conditions. Usually damage starts in sunny locations or near driveways and sidewalk areas. Damage appears as irregular dead patches in the lawn surrounded by yellowing or dying grass. Chinch bug damage can be mistaken for other lawn problems like white grubs or fungal diseases, so confirmation of chinch bug activity is needed before progressing to proper treatment.

So how do you tell if you have chinch bugs? Look for the insects. One way is to cut both ends out of a can, push it into the ground using a twisting motion and then fill the can with water for about 10 minutes and wait for any bugs to float to the top. Another way would be to get down on your hands and knees and part the grass to look for the insects. For both methods, samples should be taken in the damaged (yellowed grass), not dead, grass areas. Chinch bugs are small (about 1/5 of an inch). Adults are black with white wings that have triangular black marks on them. Nymphs, or immatures, are yellowish or pinkish with a light colored band across their body. Nymphs do not have fully developed wings. Treatment is usually a liquid or granular formulation. Liquid formulations are often bottles that you can attach to the end of the garden hose or concentrates that you mix into a tank sprayer. Granular formulations are put out with push spreaders and need to be watered in after treatment. Treatment should be applied in the area where damage is occurring and several feet out from the damaged area; the entire yard does not have to be treated. All label instructions should be read and followed before and during the treatment.
