October. I’m looking forward to the cooler weather. We are working on a Fall event during October. Keep an eye out for details and come out and get to know your neighbors. Also, we will soon be having our Annual Meeting. There have been discussions at the Board Meetings for a couple years about an increase in the Annual Assessment. During the meeting, we will go over where the Association is financially, what the Board has accomplished this year, and share some of the ideas we have for 2014. We will also have three board seats up for election. Please come out and have a voice in how the neighborhood is run. Football season is upon us. Many people like to show their support for their favorite teams by flying flags for their teams. Modification Committee approval is needed for flags other United States, State of Texas, or US Military flag. The Modification Committee has a policy in place (available on the website) to approve flags of colleges or high schools or of professional sports teams displayed on weekends. I’ve heard from a few residents seeing snakes in the neighborhood. Some people don’t like seeing snakes, but they do serve a purpose in our environment. And, with so much greenbelt, they are going to be a fact of life. Many of the larger snake species live of rodents, such as mice and rats. By doing so, they help prevent us from being over run by rodents. However, there are several venomous snakes in Texas, so if you see a snake out in your yard, walking down the street, or walking through

the greenbelt, give them space. Fall is a good time to establish new plants in your landscaping. The mild winter allows the plants to establish a strong root system for vigorous growth in the spring. However, if you are adding new raised beds to your yard, you should check with the Modification Committee. The Modification Committee has an understanding of the water flow throughout the neighborhood and can work with you to ensure your new flowerbeds do not end up causing drainage problems for you or your neighbors. Residents ask me from time to time how to get new or replacement cards for access to the Pool and Tennis Courts. CMA, our management company, handles issuing the cards. The can also address any maintenance issues that crop up. If you need their help, call them at (512) 339-6962. If you haven’t done so already, please sign up with the website. By signing up, you name is added to our email list, which will be important for getting information about social events, and other things occurring in the neighborhood. We have retired the old email list, so that should cut back on some of the duplicate emails for those that were on both lists. CMA also has a mailing list for those who provided their email addresses to them. We send the Board Meeting Announcements using both email lists, but most of the other announcements are sent through the website.

FALL WEB WORMS Webworms are often found on pecan trees around Central Texas. These caterpillars defoliate trees and create large unsightly webs on the tips of tree branches. There are 2-4 generations of webworms that occur each year. The first generation appears April- May and the last generation occurs in the late fall. The last generation is the most damaging generation, which provides these creatures with the name fall webworm. Webworm larvae, or caterpillars, are about an inch long when fully grown. They are pale green to yellow with tufts of long hairs projecting from their body. Most people notice webbing that webworms create on the tips of branches. Webworms feed within the webbing and use it as protection from predators. When the caterpillars need new foliage to feed on, they expand the web. To manage these pests, depending on the size of the tree and accessibility, you can prune egg masses off the tree before they caterpillars emerge (egg masses are on the underside of leaves and are

Webs can also be knocked out of the tree or opened with a stick or jet of water to allow predators in. Insecticides are also available for webworm management. Look for active ingredients such as Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (this product specifically targets caterpillars), spinosad, tebufenozide or carbaryl. Even when using a pesticide, the web must be opened so the pesticide reaches the caterpillars. Pruning Guidelines for Prevention of Oak Wilt in Texas

Now is the time to Prune your Oaks Trees Oak wilt, caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum, is the most destructive disease affecting live oaks and red oaks in Central Texas. Most of the tree mortality results from treetotree spread of the pathogen through interconnected or grafted root systems, once an oak wilt center becomes established. New infection centers begin when beetles carry oak wilt fungal spores from infected red oaks to fresh, open wounds on healthy oaks. Wounds include any damage caused by wind, hail, vehicles, construction, squirrels, birds or pruning. Research has shown that both oak wilt fungal mats on infected red oaks and insects that carry oak wilt spores are most prevalent in the spring. Below is a brief description of how you can reduce the risk of fungal spread when pruning. • Always paint fresh wounds on oaks, including pruning cuts and stumps, with wound dressing or latex paint immediately after pruning or live tree removal at all times of the year. • Clean all pruning tools with 10% bleach solution or Lysol™ between sites and/or trees. • If possible avoid pruning or wounding of oaks during the spring (currently defined as February1 through June 30). Reasons to prune in the spring include: • To accommodate public safety concerns such as hazardous limbs, traffic visibility or emergency utility line clearance. • To repair damaged limbs (from storms or other anomalies) • To remove limbs rubbing on a building or rubbing on other branches, and to raise low limbs over a street. • On sites where construction schedules take precedence, pruning any live tissue should only be done to accommodate required clearance. • Dead branch removal where live tissue is not exposed. Pruning for other reasons (general tree health, non-safety related clearance or thinning, etc.) should be conducted before February 1 or after June 30. Debris from diseased red oaks should be immediately chipped, burned or buried. Regardless of the reasons or time of year, proper pruning techniques should be used. These techniques include making proper pruning cuts and avoiding injurious practices such as topping or excessive crown thinning. If you are uncertain about any of this information, you should consult with a Texas Oak Wilt Certified arborist, ISA Certified Arborist, or an oak wilt specialist from a city, county or state government agency such as the Texas Forest Service or Texas AgriLife Extension Service.
