PLANTING BEAUTY IN PEMBERTON HEIGHTS Years of Effort to Revamp Triangles Gets Boost From City

When Sabrina Brown moved to Pemberton Heights in 2008, she committed herself to the goal, set two years earlier by thenPHNA president Brian Chester, of making every “Triangle” in the neighborhood a miniature park that would enrich a community already graced by natural beauty and elegant landscaping. She could not have imagined the tenacity it would take to move the project forward over the years. After nearly a decade, the City of Austin’s decision to replace water lines in the area has given Brown’s efforts a serendipitous shot in the arm. Three Triangles will reap the benefits The development of even small plots of the new water lines: of city-owned land requires not only 1. Corner of Leigh and Jarratt municipal permits that can take years The water line is complete, though to secure, but substantial funding for Brown is still waiting for final approval irrigation and landscaping. restrictions and excessive summer temperatures, planting will not start until the Fall. Only grass will be planted, in accordance with the wishes of neighboring residents whose children use the Triangle to run around freely. Since no construction is planned for the streets at the intersection of Wooldridge and Westover, the Triangle at that corner will not have a water line. Some families have voiced interest in the construction of a play scape for the Triangle at the corner of Jefferson and Hartford. It is considered to be a separate project from the other Triangles, however, since a children’s playground would be subject to permits and restrictions beyond those needed for landscaping alone. It was Sabrina Brown’s persistence in negotiating the governmental bureaucracy that finally convinced the City to turn the water on for Gail’s Triangle on Harris and Wooldridge. She knows that more perseverance will be needed if yet more Triangles are to get “makeovers.” While financial resources remain from the fundraising efforts of years past, a new drive will take place this Fall to address the costs of sprinkler systems, labor, and maintenance. Perhaps by Spring of next year, three more little parks will be blooming in Pemberton Heights. The Pemberton Journal - May 2014
