Around Lakeway Lakeway Earns Gold Scenic City Certification

The City of Lakeway’s attention to design and sign standards earned it Gold Scenic City certification on July 18 from the Scenic City Certification Program of Scenic Texas. A newly certified Scenic City, Lakeway is one of 15 cities in the state to earn first-time or upgraded certification for the 2014-2019 period. The Scenic City Certification Program is a project of Scenic Texas and its program partners, and is the first in the United States to incorporate a comprehensive set of model standards for design and development of public roadways and public spaces into one program. The program draws a direct correlation between the success of a city’s economic development efforts and the visual appearance of its public spaces and recognizes municipalities that implement highquality scenic standards. “The designation of Lakeway as a gold-level Scenic City is the result of many years of hard work by staff and past and present elected officials,” Lakeway Mayor Dave DeOme said. “The focus on strict enforcement of zoning and building ordinances over the years is one reason Lakeway has achieved this recognition.” Earning certification is straightforward. A city must initially meet three criteria before applying to the program including having a strictly regulated and enforced sign code, a ban on new billboards and a landscaping and tree planting program. Then, a city’s existing standards are assessed and scored based on a model of some 70-plus possible criteria ranging from percentage of park and open space, strong litter enforcement laws, street lighting standards, to parking lot landscaping, utility line management and more. Under the scoring system, an applicant earns Recognized, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum certification. In granting the city its Gold certification, Scenic Texas took note of Lakeway’s strong design standards and its ordinance requiring exposed concrete of detention ponds facing adjacent roadways and neighboring properties to be veneered with rock, brick or other approved material. A reception to present the 2014 municipalities with their Scenic City Certification will be Oct. 2 in Houston, in conjunction with the annual Texas Municipal League conference. Scenic City Certification program partners include the Texas Municipal League, Urban Land Institute – Houston, American Planning Association Texas, Houston-Galveston Area Council, American Council of Engineering Companies of Houston, Keep Texas Beautiful, Texas Historical Commission, Texas Downtown Association, Scenic Houston and Scenic America. Scenic Texas is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization. The mission of Scenic Texas is to preserve and enhance the visual character of Texas. It promotes enhanced design standards for public projects, billboard reduction, freeway landscaping, sign control and scenic byway development. 6

Chill Out At Lakeway’s First Cool Arts Party

The Cool Arts Party will freeze spiking temperatures in their tracks with a cool oasis of arts appreciation. Lakeway Arts Committee will host the inaugural Cool Arts Party from 2-6 p.m. Aug. 16 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. This party is free to the public and will feature big band music to highlight performing arts and paintings, jewelry and sculpture to showcase visual fine arts created by Lakeway-area artists. The popular Vintage 15, Austin’s hottest up-and-coming big band, will perform jazz and swing standards with a cool modern vibe from 3-5 p.m. This Austin jazz band also features husband and wife vocal duo Hans and Rachael Stockenberger. The Vintage 15 big band combines dynamic chemistry with sizzling swing tunes to bring a swanky sound to its performances. Bandleader-trumpet player Steve Moreland has assembled 15 fresh faces from major cities around the country to carve out a unique corner of the Austin jazz scene. The band’s angle on youth and talent brings a bright new energy, not found in any other local big bands. Their musical library covers the entirety of the Great American Songbook, ranging from Frank Sinatra to Harry Connick Jr. to Ella Fitzgerald and Michael Buble. Lakeway area artists will display their fine art paintings, jewelry, sculpture and pottery in rooms D, E and F in Lakeway Activity Center. All art on display will be available for sale. “Mark Aug. 16 on your calendars, and plan to ‘be cool’ at the refreshing Cool Arts Party at the LAC,” Lakeway Arts Committee Chairman Fred Newton said. Q: With the stock market at record highs and interest rates at all time lows, where should you be investing? A: We are currently in the sixth year of this bull market and are continuing to set new records on the stock market indexes. non-correlated with the current equity market. Around Lakeway Women’s Club Float Wins Grand Prize - Best of Show The Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway scored a grand prize with a “PT-911” float entry in Lakeway’s July 4th parade. The best-of-show entry featured the theme, “Saluting Citizen Soldiers.” Escorting the boat in full uniform and carrying their service flags were: Mike Boston – Navy Ward Beebe – Coast Guard Joe Benasutti – Army Bob Carnes – Marines Melissa Steffan – Air Force On board were float chairman Sharon January, club member Gretchen Nearburg and World War II Navy veteran Gil Boyd. Nearburg donned Boyd’s sailor uniform for the day, while January dressed in army fatigues and a Special Forces hat borrowed from Joe Benasuitti’s son. January thanked all the workers and supporters who took part, including Gretchen Nearburg, Sharon Rogers, Cherie and Charlie Harris, Jane Benasutti, Nancy Clayton, Barbara Bembry, Barbara Beebe, Pat Evans, incoming float chair Charlie Cooley, and Margaret Kilgo. “I’d especially like to thank Mike Boston, who put his mind, heart and body into constructing and painting the float. Without him, we would not have had the PT-911. And without the Harrises, we would not have had the truck,” January said. Womens Club past president Jane Benasutti, who nurtured the float plan throughout the year, remarked, “Sharon January and her team did an amazing job focusing on the soldiers— male and female—who have served and still serve our nation.” Kitty Lichty, incoming president, remarked, “This grand prize win starts our Women’s Club year off with a bang. I was delighted to see so many of our community’s retired servicemen take part.”

Boys Balancing Best Girl with Doll 2 Girls with Jump Rope The Sculpture garden seen and enjoyed daily on Lakeway Blvd. between Rogues Roost Drive and Top O’ the Lake Drive was created orginally as a memorial to Florence Newton, funded by her friends and family. Florence fell in love with Lakeway in 1986 leading to her move to Lakeway with her husband Fred in 1995.She was an active volunteer until her death in 2008. The original bronze sculpture of “Billy, the boy with the Butterfly Net” was soon joined by five life-sized sculptures : Two Boys Balancing, Girls with an Arbor Rope, Girl with a Teddy Bear and Boy Tennis player. The copper wind sculpture, “Guardian Angel” is the hand-crafted creation of Lyman Whitaker from Utah. These added sculptures created a sculpture garden produced by the City of Lakeway Arts Committee with the assistance of The Treasury and Freed Gallery. The objective of the garden is to elicit smiles from onlookers as they pass by on Lakeway Blvd.. The family of Florence remark: “The spirit of Florence smiles back.” Public memorials can heighten the visual enjoyment of citizens of Lakeway. All Things Wild Rehabilitation Submitted by Sue Knolle

A newcomer to town, All Things Wild Rehabilitation (ATW) entered a float in the Lakeway July 4th Parade to get the word out that they are here to stay. Founded in 2012 by a group of licensed wildlife rehabilitators in the Austin area and now proudly has 118 members. ATW is today a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity with plans to acquire land and build a rehabilitation facility and sanctuary in the Lakeway area. The float design signified an Intake Center for injured and orphaned wild animals and birds. Two young girls rode in the house waving to the crowd while walkers alongside handed out ATW business cards and packages of candy. For their first attempt at entering the parade, ATW took the 1st place blue ribbon in the Civic Category. ATW rehabilitators and supporters are available for presentations about wildlife care and management. They work closely with the Lakeway Police Department and will assist with help, questions, or sanctuary for all animals in need including domestic and farm animals. Each month, the group holds a Lunch & Learn at a local restaurant where a guest speaker discusses a topic about animals. Donations of time and money are deeply appreciated. WATERWISE

Thanks to the rains we received in May and June, the Lakes have come up about six feet. But, with no rain in sight, the lake levels will drop considerably in the next several months. Our hope is that we can make it to the fall without hitting the combined storage level of 600,000 acre feet in the lakes which would trigger the Drought Worse than the Drought of Record. If that happens, we will have to cut back our usage by 20 percent. Lakeway MUD has responded to the call of conservation by reducing our monthly consumption. Lakeway MUD customers have used less water this year per capita than any other year in the MUD’s history. We will continue to be on a one day irrigation schedule throughout the summer. Everyone needs to continue to conserve where ever possible. We have conservation tips on our website at www.Lakewaymud.org . We also have an extensive beneficial reuse system using recycled water. The State of Texas is experiencing a water crisis, so we need to be creative and use water wisely. With advanced technology, we have been able to treat our wastewater to higher standards than our permit requires. The City of Wichita Falls has just been approved to supplement their drinking water with recycled water. The City of Brownwood has the design approved for recycled water to drinking water supplement and are waiting on the approval from the City Council. Lakeway MUD has an extensive recycled beneficial use program that uses the water for irrigation around the City of Lakeway. In the Highland Lakes, there is a ban on discharging wastewater into the Lakes, so we have to find alternative ways to reuse the water. Lakeway MUD has been using recycled water on golf courses and medians for many years. We also have two Cedar Tracts that we are required to maintain in case we can’t get rid of the water; they provide an alternative site where we can release excess water. We have not used these Cedar Tracts since 2007 and do not intend to use them since our reuse customer base uses all of the water. We also have what we

call 210 customers who use the water for irrigation. These customers are mostly commercial or Home Owners Associations that have large common areas. In an effort to relieve the Cedar Tract on Lohmans Crossing from its permit obligation, we have submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) a major amendment to our wastewater permit. We are proposing to include our 210 customers so that we get credit on our water balance that we use for our wastewater plants. This is a step in the right direction to allow our 210 customers acreage to be used towards our permit. There will be notices sent out to adjacent homeowners letting them know that recycled water is being used for irrigation. Again I want to reiterate that we have been using recycled water for irrigation for almost forty five years, thereby conserving valuable fresh water resources with the cooperation of our customers. Beneficial reuse is one of the best ways to conserve water. Our customers get the benefit of using the water for irrigation while helping us get rid of the water, since we can’t discharge into the lakes. We save approximately twenty nine percent of our surface water every year by using recycled water for irrigation; approximately 158 million gallons a year. We have two wastewater treatment plants that serve our customers in Lakeway. The West plant has a permit that is being renewed and our East plant is the one with the permit amendment about which we published a notice in the paper last week. If successful with this permit amendment, we will be able to relieve approximately sixty acres in the heart of Lakeway of its permit obligation. Thank you for your cooperation and support. Bring Your Cool Moves To Next Big Band Bash Where else would you want to be on a hot summer night than in the cool ballroom of the Lakeway Activity Center? Kent Dugan’s 17-piece orchestra, The Republic of Texas Band, will feature well known Lakeway singers David Cummings and Lisa Clark at the next Big Band Bash from 8-10 p.m. Aug. 11 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. This band consistently appeals to dancers of many generations. Expect to hear a wide variety of favorite tunes, mostly from the Sinatra era, with fresh arrangements. A large dance floor and plenty of tables beckon anyone to dance or listen. Lakeway’s Big Band Bashes are on the second Monday of each month. This is a free event, but donations to the band are encouraged. Bring refreshments, if desired, as none are provided. Reservations are not taken, and doors open at 7:30 p.m. “Get your dancing shoes polished, dress up slightly and come out to dance and listen to some really great music,” said Fred Newton, chair of the Lakeway Arts Committee. “This monthly event shows why living in Lakeway is so much fun.”

LTlov’s 5th Annual School Supplies Drive

April Womack with Moreland Properties, who will once again participate in this worthwhile project. LTlov is the designated coordinating non profit for the Lake Travis Independent School District. LTlov’s 5th Annual School Supplies drive for low income LTISD students begins Monday, August 4th and will run through Friday, August 22nd. Give the gift of learning and help our neighbors in need with a donation of basic school supplies. Skiin' with the Galilean

Congratulations to Skiin’ With The Galilean on another successful three day water fun camp for individuals with special needs and foster children and their families. SWTG is one of 16 organizations who received an Annual Grant from LTlov. LTlov’s 2014 Annual Grants funding totaled $47,235 dollars invested into the Lake Travis community to help families in need. 12

The Lakeway Associates of Seton Schedule Wine and Cheese Event The first General Meeting of the Lakeway Associates of Seton will be a Wine and Cheese Reception on Tuesday, September 23rd, 4PM at the home of Gretchen Nearburg, 1129 Challenger St. in Lakeway. During the meeting there will be an update on Seton Shoal Creek Hospital which treats children and adults who may experience emotional and/or substance abuse difficulties. This year’s activities, dates and locations will be announced including “The Seton Christmas Homes Tour,” “The Seton Tea” as well as “The Seton Gala.” These fundraisers donate all monies raised to Seton Shoal Creek. Over the years LAS members have raised more than $ 350,000. This year promises to be an exciting and creative one. AKA Vocal Show Group

Save the date!!! Load up the “Fancy wine and chow” and bring them, along with your cousins, mother, brother and theater loving chums, to the Lakeway Activity Center on September 26th and, or 27th as The AKA Vocal Show Group performs Broadway Hits from your favorite musicals. You have seen most of the members in the Lakeway Sing A Long group or Lakeway Players performances. You ALSO KNOW them AS (AKA…get it?) Cathy Rose, Mark King, Barbara Calderaro, Theresa Lingren, Linda Bradshaw and Boyd Lawrence. They have played from Georgetown, to Snyder, from Marble Falls to Leander, and for the last two years at the Lakeway Activity Center. Let’s welcome them back this September as they perform “If My Friends Could See Me Now”, “Steam Heat”, “Opening Night”, and “Avenue Q” among other favorites. The music from plays such as Chicago, Chorus Line, Grease, Les Miserables, and Wicked will bring back fond memories of your ventures into the culture of musical theater. The show starts at 7:30, with the doors opening at 6:30, allowing plenty of time for pre-show lubrication, er….preparation! Tickets go on sale in September, and are $15.00 for reserved seating. Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song and dance act after WWll. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander. The dazzling score features well known standards including Blue Skies, I Love A Piano, How Deep Is The Ocean, Count Your Blessings and the perennial favorite, White Christmas. This musical is so uplifting, it is worthy of year-round productions. Rehearsals will begin in September and continue thru tech and dress, the first week in November. Be Healthy Rotary Challenge

The local non-profit Be Healthy Lake Travis® is partnering with the Lakeway/Lake Travis Rotary to start a Health and Wellness initiative to help Rotarians live a longer life and maintain a healthier lifestyle. This project is designed for this community, targeted to be about personal goals and personal health. These two organizations have sparked the community to learn more about wellness and healthy lifestyles. Dedicated Rotary member Jay Dolfuss has claimed to have lost over 400lbs during his lifetime thanks to one fad diet or another only to gain it back again. He has recently lost 65 pounds with a goal of 100 pounds of weight loss by the end of the year. This is due to Jay realizing that he has been on a short term strategy his whole life, now he is in better control, choosing a sustainable healthy lifestyle not quick weight loss. Jay knew he was going to need some help this time so he reached out to fellow Rotarian and Be Healthy founder Don Canada, Jr. who in 2009 went through a physical and nutritional transformation to a sustainable healthy lifestyle himself. Inspired by each other’s stories they decided to partner together and create a challenge to get Rotary moving with progress not perfection. Be Healthy provides the education - Rotarians provide the participation! Jay and Don are hoping to take this project all over the community, competing with other Rotary Clubs with the hopes of taking this international.
