Howdy Wood Glen! By David Schell I hope everyone who went to the Oktoberfest sponsored by Lisa Hassel, Realtor®, and cosponsored by Tucker Engineering had a great time. The next social event is Cocoa with Santa sponsored by sponsored by Tara Knight of Keller Williams Realty, and cosponsored by Tucker Engineering will be on Saturday December 12 from 2 – 4 pm at the Amenity Center. These social events are a great time to meet up with neighbors and get to know others in our neighborhood community. As a reminder, modification committee approval is required before starting a project that would alter the outside appearance of your home. This includes replacing the shingles on your roof with a different color or style of shingle, repainting your house a different color, replacing your fence with a fence of a different color or style, adding additional raised beds, removing or replacing trees, installing a swimming pool, playscape, outdoor kitchen, gazebo, or other structure. The role of the modification committee is to ensure that plans are in keeping with the various CC&Rs, rules, and policies in place. Preapproval is important for avoiding having to make changes during or after completion of the project. Keep in mind, the modification committee has 30 days to review a submission and may take longer if additional information is needed, so plan ahead. Also, the management company does send notice letters when they see projects that have not been submitted and approved.

Late fall and early winter is a great time to trim the oak trees that may be in your yard. The cool weather reduces insect activity that can spread diseases like oak wilt. Nonetheless, it is always a good idea to protect tree wounds by painting or spraying with tree pruning paint or seal. Also, trees need to be trimmed to avoid obstructing the sidewalk. City ordinances require tree limbs that extend over the sidewalk to be pruned to a minimum of eight feet above the sidewalk. CMA will be sending out notices to homeowners who have trees that are close to violating the city ordinances. A lot of us have neighbors with trees and bushes the reach from into our yards. In looking at state law, it appears that you have the right to trim branches that reach into your yard up to the property line. However, care should be taken as killing the tree can result in having to replace your neighbor’s tree. Obviously, the best solution is to work with your neighbor to identify branches that need to be trimmed and trim them at a reasonable location, but sometimes that doesn’t work out. Also, as we start seeing leaves drop, leaves that fall into your yard from your neighbor’s tree is your responsibility to clean up. The Board is currently in the process of formulating the budget for 2015. If there are things you would like to see accomplished in the next year, please let us know so we can consider it when preparing the budget.

CARPENTER ANTS

Carpenter ants nest outdoors in dead wood (tree stumps or dead limbs, fences, firewood, etc.). They may also be found in wood siding, beams, joists, fascia boards or trim on structures. Damage is usually limited since carpenter ants tunnel and nest within wood; they do not eat wood. However, wood can become weakened by carpenter ant excavation. Carpenter ants are large ants that can vary in color from all black to reddish to yellowish or a combination of colors. These ants have one node, no stinger and a circle of hairs at the tip of their abdomen. Galleries in the nest are excavated following the grain of the wood and have clean, smooth walls. Nest locations may be discovered by searching for piles of sawdust-looking material under exit holes. Sawdust is coarse and may also contain soil or sand, uneaten insects as well as dead ants from the colony. Carpenter ants are able to enter homes from tree branches or utility lines touching the home, through cracks and crevices around windows and doors, cracks in foundation walls, ventilation openings or heating and air conditioning ducts.

Here are some tips for a carpenter ant infestation: • Remove dead trees and/ or limbs and remove tree stumps from the landscape. Many times you can remove the (possible) nesting sites and get rid of the ants without using pesticides. • Prune trees and shrubs that touch the home. Carpenter ants will often use these areas as a bridge to enter the home. • Replace wood that is water damaged. Carpenter ants are drawn to moisture damaged wood, so make sure to repair any water leaks and replace damaged wood. • Remove wood debris and firewood that is near the home. Carpenter ants may nest in firewood and when it is stacked right next to the home, it allows the ants to enter more easily.
