Howdy Wood Glen! By Wayne Solum

My name is Wayne Solum and I am honored to serve as the board president for 2015. I’d like to thank David Schell, who has stepped into the vice-president role, for his two years of service to the community. It is no small thing to contribute ones spare time and energy in service to their neighborhood, but it is a good sacrifice. That goes for all board members, committee chairs and other volunteers who step up when asked or see a need and fill it. Thank you! As for my background, I moved to Wood Glen with my wife, Lela, and 4 young children in October, 2001. I discovered Wood Glen when my in-laws bought a home here. I was blown away by how beautiful the homes were, how well maintained the lots were and how big and inviting the wooded greenbelt was. We found the perfect floor plan – 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms -- at a price much higher than we ever imagined spending on a home. I compared neighborhoods in Round Rock and Cedar Park and by far Wood Glen was the best value. It felt so prestigious. We placed high value on the assurances made by the builder that the deed restrictions were strictly enforced and that we needed to read the CC&Rs (which I did). The message received was that the neighborhood and our investment would be preserved. Since that time we’ve added two more kids to the clan. (I’d have a dozen more if Lela hadn’t made it clear – six is enough!) Prior to moving here we were blessed and happy as could be to live in a very small, 3-bedroom, 2-bath home east of IH35. I fondly remember mowing my “grass” on my red lawn tractor, a kid in my lap and dust clouds billowing behind me. We had such great times there. We loved it dearly but after eleven years we were getting cramped. Besides that, we didn’t have an HOA. People there let their yards and landscaping do whatever it wanted. Virtually everyone took in their garages or filled them up with junk (including us). Some people parked their vehicles on the front yard because there was no room on the congested streets. And when the community monument was falling apart my wife and kids unsuccessfully tried raising enough money to repair it. Eventually I footed most of it. I know that’s an extreme example – maybe. It’s actually all too common where an HOA doesn’t exist, or where one has become inactive. Don’t believe that “it can’t happen here.” Anything is possible and entropy dictates that everything decays unless energy is constantly injected into the system. I know the HOA can seem annoying, but trust me that those who volunteer their time truly do care about the neighborhood and the people in it. And of course, we can always use more helping hands. With that said, I’d like to tell you some changes I’m hoping to make. I believe one area we can improve upon dramatically is communications. The board is actively discussing ways to get timely, relevant information to you. We will explore how best to use electronic outlets such as NextDoor.com and our own website, Woodglen.org, as well as FaceBook and others. But I’d also like to make the newsletter you’re holding in your hands more useful as it is the only source of information for some. Starting in January I hope to re-vamp the layout and have content broken out into small sections that are easy to digest. I want to include head’s up maintenance lists to let you know ahead of time what you should be aware of and what the drive-through will be picking up so you won’t be surprised. By breaking out financial information and project updates into separate “departments” you will be better able to see where your dues are going. It may be possible to switch to color printing and if we do, I would like articles with photographs featuring Wood Glen outdoor living spaces, landscaping, home décor and much more. I also want to revive a version of the yard of the month program -- this time rewarding any and all who consistently maintain their yards to high standards. 2014 Annual Meeting News [Note: This update appeared on NextDoor.com and WoodGlen. org on November 6, 2014. Please sign up if you wish to receive timely information about your neighborhood.] The Wood Glen POA annual meeting was held on October 28, 2014 at Old Town Elementary at 7:00pm. This meeting was heavily attended thanks to lively discussion on NextDoor.com. Quorum was met with 43 homes represented in person and 26 proxies. Total attendance was 58. As has been the custom, the president, David Schell, presented a slideshow updating the community on projects the board has been working and spending money on since the 2013 meeting and reported the association’s current financial condition. After the presentation, board elections were held. Several attendees volunteered to be on the ballot in addition to the three sitting board members who were up for re-election. All candidates introduced themselves and expressed why they felt they would be an asset to the community. The vote was taken by written ballot and the following candidates were selected: David Schell, Roy Weiderkher, Wayne Solum and Tim Thornton. The board then elected officers for 2015. They are: President – Wayne Solum, Vice-President – David Schell, Treasurer – Tim Thornton and Secretary – Lela Solum. There was also a session where members had the opportunity to address the board and their fellow members. There was lots of participation and the topic most discussed was the CC&Rs height restrictions for playscapes and the possibility of pressing for an amendment to the CC&Rs to increase this from 10ft. The modcom was also a topic of discussion. I hope to address these items in future updates. All-in-all it was a very productive meeting. If you have never been to an annual meeting or if it’s been a few years, please consider coming next year – there are several opportunities to meaningfully participate and serve your community.

GERMAN COCKROACHES German cockroaches are most commonly found within homes and commercial food establishments, usually in the kitchen. The adults are about ½ inch long, tan and have two dark stripes above the head. The females will carry the egg case protruding from the abdomen until the day before hatching. The nymphs, or baby cockroaches, look similar to the adults, but are smaller and without fully developed wings. German cockroaches may enter buildings through infested boxes, grocery bags, furniture and dried pet food. They may also enter around loose-fitting doors and windows as wells as through sewer lines, attics, and where pipes penetrate the structure. Cockroaches are associated with filth, but even well-maintained structures can become infested. German cockroaches are active at night, and are usually only visible during the day if they are disturbed or there is a severe infestation. They like to rest in tight, dark spaces such as under or inside cupboards, behind loose baseboards or in bathrooms. They are omnivores, feeding plant and animal products such as meats, starchy foods, baked goods, leather, book bindings and wallpaper paste. Inspection is important to any cockroach control program. Identify the type of cockroach and their location. Eliminate indoor hiding places such as paper or cardboard. Sticky traps can help to reduce cockroach populations without the use of chemical. Place traps against walls near cockroach feeding and hiding areas.

Some type of chemical control will be needed to eliminate cockroach infestations. Baits are a combination of toxicants and food attractant. Baits should be placed in areas where cockroaches are known to feed. Residual sprays are available in ready-to-use containers or concentrates that are mixed with water. Sprays are fast and easy to apply. Dust treatments should be used in cracks and crevices, wall voids, under refrigerators or around pipes. Dusts should be applied in a light, even coat that is barely visible. Do not apply dust or residual sprays to areas that have bait. Wood Glen MAINTENANCE CALENDAR Lawn - Now is the time to winterize your lawn and apply preemergent weed treatment. Limited watering is still necessary as the root system develops during the winter even though the turf is dormant. Your lawn will look fantastic come spring. Trees – If you have low hanging branches, especially over sidewalks, please trim your trees. Raising the canopy can showcase your home and stimulate growth. Christmas Decorations – I know, we just told you to put them up so you could potentially win a prize. But by the second week of January you should be taking them down again. Courtesy notices are likely to start going out around the 13th.

Tree Replacement Project Over the last several years, Wood Glen has lost over 70 trees in the greenbelt due to drought. It has been suggested that we have a tree planting party in January or February to help reverse the losses. This project is still in the initial stages but if it sounds interesting to you, please contact Wayne Solum at wsolum@juno.com to be put on the update list.
