NEIGHBORHOODNEWS A PROPERTY UPKEEP REMINDER
MCNEIL BAND PANCAKE BREAKFAST IN MARCH
As we leave winter behind and neighborhood lawns grow, the Hunter's Chase Homeowners Association would like to remind property owners and residents that they are required to keep yards mowed, driveways and sidewalks edged and free of weeds between cracks, and all hedges trimmed, especially in areas that could impact sightlines for cars pulling out of driveways and sidewalk visibility. Hedges next to houses should also be trimmed to avoid creating visual barriers which are attractive to burglars. All specific restrictions and obligations related to yard/premises maintenance are outlined in your Home Owners Deed Restrictions Manual, or you can call or email Carmen at Goodwin Management at 512-502-7503 or carmen.glassinger@goodwintx.com
The Mighty McNeil Maverick Boosters Organization is sponsoring its 6th Annual Pancake Breakfast on March 7 at St. Phillips UMC, 16321 S Great Oaks Dr. Tickets, which cost $6 each, are currently available from your favorite Maverick Band student, or by contacting Brian Kerman at president@ mcneilband.org. Additionally, band boosters will be hosting a Mattress Sale at the school's band hall on March 7, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can purchase brand-new name-brand mattresses with factory warranties at 30% - 60% off retail prices. Should Crape Myrtles Be Pruned? Debby Cole of Greater Texas Landscape Services provides some insight on whether to prune or not prune crape myrtles. Debby says: We have been marching against the practice of "crape murder" for over 20 years now. The practice of topping or pollarding crape myrtles is a practice of years gone by. It used to be thought that pruning improved the blooming of the beloved crape myrtle. This is not true. Notice the crape myrtles which are planted by our Texas Highway Department. They are never pruned and they bloom beautifully. The trunks and branches are strong and produce prolific blooms each year. The crape myrtle (a native of India) loves hot, dry weather and full sun. Give these trees this environment and leave them alone! Excessive pruning not only produces trees which are weird looking but the branches become weakened with over-pruning. Spindly growth appears from the pruning cuts. So NO, do not prune unless you want to shape a bit or remove damaged limbs. Need help with your landscaping endeavors? Debby can be reached at 512-626-0600. Northwest Austin Garden Club Revs Up with the Warmer Weather The Northwest Austin Garden Club is looking for gardeners of all ages and experience levels. Members share their skills, education and build community. The club is described as "not your typical 'Yard of the Month' neighborhood garden group." RODEO AUSTIN PROVIDES LOTS OF FUN FOR SPRING BREAKERS A great outing option is Rodeo Austin, running March 14-28. The event coincides with Round Rock Independent School District's spring break, and offers a lot of fun things to do, both for kids and adults. Rodeo Austin hosts one of ProRodeo's Top 10 events, and the fairground opens at 10 a.m. daily with a large carnival, shopping, food, and shows and special attractions. Kidstown, with a petting zoo, is a big draw. Kidstown offers a chance to learn about chores on the farm with the "Farmer for a Day" exhibit, and kids can drive their own mini tractor in a pedal tractor maze. Rodeo Austin takes place at the Travis County Expo Center at 9100 Decker Lake Road. Go to www.rodeoaustin.com to see the calendar of events and to purchase tickets.
