Around Lakeway Lakeway Invites Public To Attend Arts District Open House, Take Survey
The City of Lakeway invites the public to learn more about its proposed arts district concept at an open house from 6-8 p.m. April 30 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. Several city staff members will visit with community members, answer questions and gather input about the vision of an arts district in Lakeway. To create a first-class showcase for visual and performing artists in Lakeway and a gathering place for the community, the city drafted a concept that could include a performing arts center, art galleries, museums, live music venues, sculpture gardens, and walking trails. An undeveloped area of roughly 130 acres, located along Lohmans Crossing and behind the Oaks at Lakeway, is the focus of this discussion. The area includes approximately 82 acres of land owned by the Lakeway Municipal Utility District. “If it were sold today under the current zoning, this land could easily be developed into apartment buildings,” Lakeway Mayor Dave DeOme explained. “By zoning this area of the city as an arts district, we could instead encourage arts-focused businesses to locate here that would address a need we have heard about for years from local artists — professional, high-quality venues where they can perform and display their works.”
6
Lakeway Voice - April 2015
In order to designate this district, the city would have to create a special arts district zoning category unique to Lakeway. Adopting zoning for this area allows the community to establish development standards that protect and highlight Lakeway’s character and values. City staff discussed a first draft of the proposed arts district zoning at the regular Lakeway City Council meeting on March 16 where council and staff members heard public opinion both against and in favor of the preliminary concept. All Lakeway City Council meetings are live streamed and available for viewing later at www.lakeway-tx.gov/videos. The city also encourages the public to provide input on the arts district concept via a brief online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/85V23MM. Copies of the survey also will be available at the open house on April 30. “We want to hear every Lakeway citizen’s opinion on the proposed arts district concept,” DeOme said. “Come to the open house, one of the City Council meetings, or take the online survey to share your vision of an arts district in Lakeway.” For information, call 512-314-7500 or visit www.lakeway-tx.gov/ artsdistrict. This open house was originally scheduled as a town hall meeting on April 8.

RetiRe BetteR - A Lifetime of income
THE TAX TALK wITh Josh sTIvERs
The anticipation (or dread) of the tax return season is officially underway. Of course, your attitude about tax time may be dependent on how much income you earn and the quality of financial and tax advice you receive. While the focus and media attention tends be on the top 1% of income earners, a new statistic reveals a startling fact; you may be part of a larger group of tax payers responsible for footing over 70% of America’s tax bill. According to Kiplinger, the top 10% of income earners (those making $125,195 or more) are responsible for a whopping 70.2% of the tax burden. That’s right, only 10% of the population is responsible for almost 3/4 of the tax revenue. Because such a minority of Americans are paying the vast majority of taxes it stands to reason that this “10%” should be reviewing how tax efficient their investment plan is in order to keep more of their hard-earned income in their pocket. Probably the most common and most costly mistake that I see when reviewing a prospective clients’ investment and tax situation is that their current advisor is not reviewing their tax return each year as part of their overall success strategy. This “financial malpractice” compounds investment advice that is not tax efficient. Your tax return is the heartbeat to your financial life and when your investment hand is working with your tax hand less money should fall through the cracks each year at tax time.
When was the last time your advisor asked to see a copy of your tax return? Here are some of the more popular and effective ways to become more tax efficient whether you’re in the top 10% or not: 1) Max Out Your Retirement 2) Tax-Free Munis 3) Use Carryover Losses 4) Purposeful Investing 5) Dump Mutual Funds, Own Stocks 6) Natural Resource Exploration Investments 7) Fund a “Non-Qualified Retirement Account” Space does not allow for a complete discussion of each of these strategies. The key take away is the necessity to review your tax return with a competent investment advisor on an annual basis. If you would like to discuss how you can give less of your hard earned dollars to the government, we would be happy to have the “tax talk” with you. If you would like further information on this topic or to receive a copy of our report on retirement income planning, please send your requests to the email below. As always, we are here to answer your pressing questions and concerns regarding retirement investment planning. Around Lakeway Lakeway Seeks Artists for Spring Fine Arts Show
Lakeway Arts Committee is calling for local artists to display their works in a Spring Fine Arts Show by registering from April 8 through May 9 at Lakeway Activity Center. The show will provide a cost-effective venue for local area artists to display and sell their fine art and allow the public to meet these creative artists and get to know some of their background. This free exhibition will feature fine art paintings, jewelry, sculpture and pottery created by area artists from 1-5 p.m. May 16 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. There is no fee for artists to display their art creations, but they must come to the Activity Center to register their participation, provide their contact information and obtain their display locations on a “first come” basis. Guidelines for local artist participation are: • All artists must be Lakeway Activity Center members. If they are not members, they may join when registering for this event. • Artists who have not previously exhibited their fine art at the LAC must submit three photos of the type of art they will display at this event. Send these photos to Lakeway Arts Committee member Russ Block at rblock6@austin.rr.com before registering for the Spring Fine Arts Show at the LAC. • All artwork must be original work by the artist and be available “for sale,” unless otherwise noted on the piece of art. • Artists may share the same assigned location, but each artist must register and sign-up for this same location when registering. Hanging fine art, such as paintings, will be displayed in assigned locations in Rooms A, B, C and F of the Activity Center. Jewelry, sculpture and pottery will be displayed outside on tables along the center’s courtyard. Art display set-up will start at 11 a.m., and take down is no earlier than 5 p.m. Artists will be provided a 6-foot by 3-foot table and two folding chairs. Artists should provide their own tablecloth and display panels. Three art hanging rods with six hooks will be provided for each artist location along the walls in Rooms A, B, and C. For information, contact Block at rblock6@austin.rr.com.

Lakeway’s Big Band Bash Continues To Swing
Swing dance is getting hotter in Lakeway as more and more dancers are packing into Lakeway’s monthly Big Band Bash. The next Big Band Bash is set for 8-10 p.m. April 13 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Those who just listen are also enjoying the evening with The Republic of Texas Band. Kent Dugan’s 17-piece orchestra is one of the best big bands in Central Texas. The band features Lakeway singers David Cummings and Lisa Clark and consistently appeals to dancers of many generations. Expect to hear a wide variety of favorite tunes, mostly from the Sinatra era, with fresh arrangements. Lakeway Arts Committee sponsors the Big Band Bash the second Monday of each month. These are free events, but donations to the band are encouraged. “We love to see the different generations at these dances,” Lakeway Arts Committee chairman Fred Newton said. “More young people seem to be gaining an appreciation for ballroom dancing.” Lakeway Activity Center’s ballroom is the perfect venue with a large dance floor and tables available for your refreshments without the hassle of reservations. For information, call Lakeway Activity Center at 512-2611010.

Around Lakeway Lakeway Sing Along To Go ‘Globe-Trotting’ For Spring Show
Celebrating their 15th anniversary of entertaining the Lake Travis area, Lakeway Sing Along will present “It’s A Small World” on April 23, 24 and 25 at the Lakeway Activity Center. Last year’s spring show focused on music “Made in America,” but this group of 80-plus local music-lovers is expanding its horizons worldwide for 2015. What was the inspiration for this theme? “ M u s i c i s s u c h a n Hali Wang, left, and Lucy Mao i n t e r n a t i o n a l c o m m o n will sing songs from their native bond,” Sing Along Director lands in Lakeway Sing Along’s “It’s A Small World” on April Ernie Clay said.” When I 23, 24 and 25 at the Lakeway auditioned two new Sing Activity Center. Along candidates — one from mainland China, the other from Taiwan — I realized it really is ‘a small world after all.’ ” The Sing Along chorus boasts many members who have lived in foreign countries. Several of these performers will sing songs the audiences will likely recognize, some with a verse in the languages in which they were originally written. “It’s going to be fun – kind of like a musical travelogue,” Clay said. Some of the places the chorus will journey to are Italy, France, the British Isles, Greece, Lebanon, China, Argentina and Brazil – over 20 countries in all. As always, there will be some fun numbers, exotic costumes and the Sing Along orchestra. There’s no need to pack your bags for this globe-trotting musical journey covering five continents, but reservations are a must. It is a dinner show with tables of 10. Doors open at 6 p.m., and dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. along with dinner entertainment to warm up the audience. The odyssey starts at 8 p.m. The event is BYOB. Tickets are $30 person, which covers all expenses, except for any “trips of a lifetime” this music inspires. Tickets will go on sale at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, for Activity Center members on March 23 and for all others on March 30. Call the Activity Center at 512-261-1010 for information and be sure to view the new Lakeway Sing Along video at http:// youtu.be/AOKrxpCrCY0. 10

Austin Bella Corda also will perform dance music from Alphonse X, Praetorius, Mozart, Chapdelaine, Piazzola and Taylor. Other Austin Bella Corda members are Sam Forbes, Annalise Irby, Simon Krauskopf, Ben Parrish, Elle Smith and Jeneve Wilder. Director is Kevin Taylor. The kids had an emotional sensibility way beyond their years.” The ensemble is sponsored by the Young Performing Artist Program, which assists targeted pre-college guitarists in their education and development. It is a special project of Greater Austin Creative Alliance, a 501(c)3 organization and is funded totally by voluntary donations. For information, call Lakeway Activity Center at 512-261-1010.

LAKEWAY CIVIC CORPORATION CELEBRATES 50 YEARS
The Lakeway Civic Corporation holds an annual meeting to give financial information of the past year and to announce awards to citizens who have made contributions to the community at large. A golden anniversary theme was the backdrop for presentations to 2015 Meritorious award winners: Jimmy Anderson, Becky and Jose Naveira, Searcy Willis, and Steve Witt. The 2015 Outstanding Citizen of the Year was awarded to Gerry Astorino. Fifty years ago, the founders of the Lakeway community conceived a plan whereby a percentage of revenue from lot sales would be contributed to a Trust Fund, and the income from the Trust could be used for specific community needs. This idea led to the establishment of the Lakeway Civic Corporation (LCC), which was incorporated in 1965. The stated purpose is for promotion of the special welfare of the Lakeway community, its property owners and residents; participate in projects that will improve the community at large; support civic projects for the betterment of the City of Lakeway and its residents. The Trust Fund receives its money from the sale of lots in very defined and specific locations in Lakeway. The LCC receives income from two sources – the interest generated from the Trust Fund and profit generated from the publication of the Lakeway Residents directory. An elected board of trustees administers the funds, approves requests for funding of projects and in the last 50 years, approximately $1,300,000 has been funneled back in to the community. These projects have included many enhancements to Lakeway community parks, saving and moving the log cabin to City Hall, supporting The Blood Center of Central Texas through a local blood drive, contributing to the building of the entrance of the Lake Travis Community Library, paying for the Service League phone service, and many smaller projects that benefit the community. Lakeway Lakers
Registration for the Lakeway Lakers summer swim team opened to returning members on March 23rd and opened for new members starting March 30th. Registration continues until we reach our enrollment cap. We usually fill our spots quickly so be sure to register soon! Season details: Practices begin after school starting on April 27 and continue until school ends on June 5. Then we switch to morning practices until June 19. All practices are at the Lakeway Swim Center, in the heated competition pool. We will compete in seven swim meets this summer at the Lakeway Swim Center and other local pools. All swimmers are welcome to join the team; there is no residency or pool membership requirement. The minimum qualifications for swimmers is at least 5 years old and not older than 17 years old, the ability to swim one lap (25 yards) of elementary freestyle, and ready to participate on a team. If you are uncertain about your child’s swimming abilities, please schedule a tryout before registering for swim team. The registration fee is $200 per swimmer, and this includes everything except the team swimsuit. Running a swim meet is a community effort and all families on the team are needed to work at least four swim meets or to help in other areas
related to team operations. If you are new to the sport of swimming, we will help you find the right job. Training provided! Our team is recreational and a lot of fun, with an emphasis on stroke development and individual improvement. You can learn more about our team at www.lakewaylakers.org. If you have any questions about summer swim team, or need to schedule a tryout, please contact us at admin@lakewaylakers.org.
Your family’s home for health.
