Niche Ranks Lakeway as No. 5 Best Suburb in Texas Lakeway’s livability has earned it a ranking as the No. 5 Best Suburb in Texas in online research site Niche’s 2015 Best Places list. The Best Suburbs ranking provides a comprehensive assessment of the overall livability and quality of life of an area at the suburb level. This grade takes into account key factors of a location, including school ratings, crime rates, housing, employment, community, and things to do, in an attempt to measure the overall quality of an area. “This ranking shows that our city is much more than a sleepy retirement community,” Lakeway Mayor Joe Bain said. “Lakeway offers among the best quality of life that families can find in Texas thanks to a stellar police department and school district, scenic Lake Travis and Hill Country views, beautiful recreation amenities, thriving business community, and proximity to Austin and Hill Country attractions.” Lakeway earned an overall A+ for having a high education rate, low crime rate, median household income of $100,000, $1,352 median rent, 4.5 percent poverty rate, 2.7 percent unemployment rate, and pleasant climate. The city scored A+ marks for education and community, A’s for housing, health and fitness, A- marks for things to do and jobs, B+ marks for commutes and weather, and B’s for crime and safety and outdoor activities. Lakeway also placed fifth among Niche’s rankings of Texas suburbs with the best community and tied with Bee Cave and Hudson Bend for seventh place among suburbs with the best public schools in Texas. Joining Lakeway in Niche’s top five suburbs in Texas were Rollingwood, University Park, Murphy and Allen. Niche, a research site that blends community reviews with hard data, defines a suburb as a place located within a Census-defined urbanized area, but outside the principal city with a population of at least 1,000. Of the suburbs that met the required qualifications, Niche graded 11,298 suburbs in the United States and ranked 3,250 across the country. The site was founded in 2002 by Carnegie Mellon University students to provide reviews and insight from experts. 6

The lights of Hollywood will shine on Lakeway this summer for the city’s annual Movies in the Park and Dive-In Movies series. Beginning in June, the City of Lakeway Parks and Recreation Department will host the free Movies in the Park on Friday evenings at Lakeway City Park, 502 Hurst Creek Road, and Dive-In Movies at Lakeway Swim Center, 3103 Lakeway Blvd. All movies are rated G or PG. “We invite Lakeway residents to enjoy one of the best deals in town for family entertainment at our summer movies series,” Lakeway Parks and Recreation Director Andra Dearing said. “Watching a movie outdoors at the park or pool is an experience you won’t want to miss this summer.” The Movies in the Park lineup for 2015 is: • The Hero of Color City – June 5; • Bears – June 19; • The Boxtrolls – July 10; • Big Hero 6 – July 24; and, • Strange Magic – Aug. 7. Movies in the Park will begin at dusk at about 8:45 p.m. each night. Free popcorn and other treats will be available for purchase. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair to set up at our “Theater Under the Stars.” So everyone may see the screen, the city asks audience members to place their blankets to the middle and lawn chairs to the outside. Also, we request that any blinking/glowing items be put under blankets while the film is being shown. Please do not bring dogs to this event, but bring the kids and tell neighbors. For information about Movies in the Park, please call 512-314-7532. Take a dip at Lakeway Swim Center and catch a flick at the city’s Dive-In Movies. This year’s Dive-In Movies lineup is: • Dolphin Tale 2 – June 12; • Into the Woods – June 26; • Planes: Fire and Rescue – July 17; and, • Paddington – July 31. Admission to Dive-In Movies is $3 per person. The pool area will be cleared at 8 p.m., and anyone wishing to see the movie will be charged $3 to be let back into the pool area at 8:30 p.m. Swimming is allowed while the movie is being shown. For information about Dive-In Movies, please call 512-261-3000.

JOIN IN THE FUN OF th
Lakeway’s 4 of July Celebration! SU BMI TTE D BY S HE LLY A NS BA CH Spring is in the air, and Lakeway’s 4th of July Celebration is just around the corner. This year’s 40th annual celebration will be bigger and better than ever, with something for everyone, including your four-legged friends. The parade will kick off Saturday, July 4th at 8:30 a.m. at the Live Oak Driving Range on Lakeway Drive, and continue down Lakeway Drive ending at Cross Creek Drive, adjacent to the Lakeway Activity Center. The theme this year is Preserving Our Freedom, which begs us to reflect on all the freedoms we enjoy, and many we take for granted. We are guaranteed these freedoms thanks to the brave men and women who have served in our Armed Forces from the Revolutionary War to the current war in Afghanistan—especially those who have given their lives for our country. Therefore, it is only fitting that we pause to honor and celebrate those who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedoms. Leading the parade is Lakeway’s own Grand Marshal Brigadier General Richard T. Drury, USAF, (Ret.). Learn more about Brig. Gen. Drury in June’s Lakeway Voice, The Lake Travis View, Joe Bain’s Blog, and others. The phenomenal line up of parade participants this year includes the 36th Infantry Division Band, (a division of the United States Army and the Texas Army National Guard); a flyover of four Vintage WWII aircraft, flying three passes, with the last one in missing-man formation. The flyover will begin at 8:50 a.m. over Village Square, right after the Honor Guard passes. We are also proud to have the Lake Travis High School Band, the Lake Travis Cavalettes, the Wells Fargo Stagecoach, the Lake Travis Fiddlers, a performing group from Concordia University, Lakeway Dignitaries (including Mayor Joe Bain and his wife Nancy, former Mayor David DeOme and his wife Linda), City Council members, and Linda and Todd Buikema as Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam, in addition to a local America-loving clown and lots of other surprises. Margaret Meyers will serve as head judge of the parade entries, including patriotically decorated floats, bands, golf carts, walkers and vehicles. Any amplified sounds from entries should be patriotic in nature. The festivities don’t stop there! The Pageantry of Flags follows the 8

parade at 10:30 a.m. at the Lakeway Activity Center on Cross Creek, where Bill Dickson will be Master of Ceremonies and Grand Marshal Brig. Gen. Richard T. Drury, will give the keynote address. A free continental breakfast of coffee, donuts and juice will be offered to all before the pageant begins. Entertainment will be provided by the 36th Infantry Division Band, the Lake Travis Fiddlers, and our own Lakeway Wildflowers singing a few of your favorite patriotic songs. Additionally, Margaret Meyers will present winners of the parade entries according to categories, and winners will be presented with an award ribbon. For this special day, the Lakeway Swim Center will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Cost of admittance will be $3 per person all day. The City of Lakeway’s 4th of July parade would not be possible without the cooperation of numerous resident volunteers, the dedicated support of local businesses, pilots of the WWII Vintage Aircrafts, Public Works and Police Departments, as well as the hard work of the Parks and Recreation Department, including the 4th of July Committee, chaired by Andra Dearing. If you are interested in volunteering for this celebration, there are numerous opportunities to help out. Please contact Vicki Taylor at 512-261-3594 for more information. And, there’s still time to join the fun of being a parade participant. Organize your family, friends or classmates to ride or walk the parade route. No extravagant props are needed; just creatively reflect the parade theme with signs, colorful and patriotic attire, and lots of spirit and pride in the freedom of America. Entry forms to participate in the parade are available at the Lakeway Activity Center, City Hall, and on the city website at www.lakeway-tx. gov. For more information, contact the Lakeway Parks and Recreation office at 512-314-7530. The parade and pageant is going to be another electrifying event in Lakeway, so be sure to save the date! Let’s make July 4th, 2015 an unforgettable celebration. Encourage your neighbors to fly American flags gloriously up and down every street in Lakeway. The event is free and open to the public. See you there! Copyright © 2015 Peel, Inc.
We are hoping that you will participate in the City of Lakeway’s 40th Annual Fourth of July Parade. Our theme this year is “Preserving Our Freedom”. The parade date will be Saturday, July 4th and starts promptly at 8:30 a.m. As we have in the past, all entries will assemble at the Live Oak Driving Range, 510 Lakeway Drive, starting at 7:00 a.m. and should be in place and ready to begin at 8:15 at the very latest. The parade route goes up Lakeway Drive from the Live Oak Club House to Cross Creek. The Pageantry of Flags program begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, and entry winners will receive their ribbons then. All creative entries, from floats, bands and golf carts, to walkers and vehicles are welcomed to participate in our traditional and unique Lakeway Parade. We ask that any amplified sound from your entry be patriotic in nature – we love having more patriotic music! Entries will be placed in categories for judging – Large Business, Small Business, Civic Organizations and Clubs, Church, Schools and Scouts, Marching, and General Classification. Vintage car and convertible entries are wonderful additions to the parade but will not be judged. The parade entries will be judged on presentation of the theme, creativity, patriotic emphasis, effort and instant impression. One entry will win Best of Parade. We look forward to having you in the Parade. If you are not the correct contact this year, we would very much appreciate your taking the time to pass this letter and entry form to the correct individual. Please return the Entry Form by mail or in person at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, Lakeway TX 78734 or by email to paradechair@lakeway-tx.gov or FAX to 512-261-5033. Galloping Gourmets Host “Thank-You Luncheon” The Galloping Gourmets of Lakeway, a monthly luncheon group, honored first responders—police, fire and EMS—as well as staff and councils from the City of Lakeway, The Hills and Lakeway MUD at a “Thank-You Luncheon” on Friday, May 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lakeway Activity Center. Organizer Pat Evans, who chairs the 100-member Galloping Gourmets, says this event had its origins in a smaller project, led by Sharon Rogers, who led the group last year. “Last year, Sharon collected casseroles and desserts, and took them to the Lakeway police station and one local fire station. This year, we decided to invite as many public servants as we could to ‘lunch on us,’ so we could thank them for all they do for our community’s residents,” Evans said. An event planning committee included Evans, Rogers, Sally Barto, Judy Donohue, Doris Burson, Lois Dodd, Kim Majkszak, Margot Odom, Jaime Rubenstein and Susan Bryce. About 25 other Galloping Gourmets took part by baking and serving. “The Lakeway Activity Center graciously donated space for the event, and we were pleased to host about 70 people, thanks to our members’ culinary talents. Best remark I heard from one City employee named Xavier was, ‘I had three plates.’ That’s what we

Where style and functionality meet.
Throughout our design process, David showed a great deal of integrity, creativity, and reliability. He has a friendly, outgoing personality that makes him very easy to work with. David was also very patient with us and helped us stay organized and within our budget. Because this was our first time building a home, we relied heavily on David's opinions and suggestions. We wanted our home to suit our preferences, but at the same time wanted to take into account the resale value. David accomplished that without a doubt. He demonstrated great attention to detail and it shows in our beautiful home! David is a very talented designer. We highly recommend him for any of your design projects!

this time it’s different wITh Josh sTIvERs
Those who forget the past are destined to repeat it. Though we all know this to be true, investors are notorious for buying into the assumption that things are going to be different this time around. The great investor John Templeton called this phrase the “four most dangerous words” in investing. Most people love the idea of continuing to open their brokerage account statements and seeing the account values reaching new high levels. We all know deep down that left unattended, these investment portfolios will not continue to operate this way forever. Everyone agrees that there will be another bear market in the future, but the problem is that no one knows when it will happen. It is true that our current economy is drastically different from that of the late 90’s and the middle 2000’s leading up to the financial crisis. It is also true that markets follow certain cycles, and at some point our current bull market will not sustain itself. Now more than ever it is of the utmost importance to plan for the worst and hope for the best. When was the last time you reviewed your current investment allocation in light of the 6 year bull market we have experienced? The run up in equities has caused many portfolios to be more heavily weighted into growth and small cap stocks than might be reasonable. Right now is the time to be in the process of repositioning your overall portfolio to take into account the possibility of lesser market returns in the future. This is not if, it’s when! Even if you are perfectly comfortable with the risk of the markets, it is smart money management to not have all of your money in investments
that move in the same direction. Stocks, stock funds, ETFs, variable annuities, and even bond funds all tend to move together (they are correlated). This can be hazardous to your financial health. There are many alternative investments available today that are not directly tied to the public stock market. Historically, these investments have been used by large institutions and endowments to offset the volatility of the stock market while still achieving decent growth over time. By taking a page out of the wealthy investors playbook (e.g. the Tiger 21 Group or the Yale and Harvard college endowments) you should include investments that are generally unaffected by the mood swings of the markets such as nontraded real estate investments, private equity, venture capital, commodities, hedge funds, oil and gas, secured floating income, and principal protected fixed and indexed annuities. Through a proper allocation across non-market correlated asset classes, it is possible to balance out your current investment portfolio without giving up the potential for long term growth. While we all want the market to continue reaching new peaks, we still have to plan appropriately for the periods of time the markets choose to go through the valley. If you would like further information on this topic or to receive a copy of our report on retirement investment planning, please send your requests to the email below. been accepted into the honors program at Baylor where he’ll study theater arts. He is hoping for a career on Broadway. Dolliver and Volpe live in Lakeway; Yorke lives in Bee Cave. Keith Tran, who graduates from Vandegrift on June 4, will attend Texas Tech in the fall. He lives in Steiner Ranch and plans to become a pediatric surgeon. “We had such an impressive group of applicants this year, making our final decision was difficult,” Jean Hennagin, chair of the Friends scholarship committee, noted. “We found the final four exemplary at all levels, including their service to the community.” The four seniors were awarded their Friends of the Lake Travis Community Library scholarships at their schools’ awards ceremonies May 26 and 27.
