Manager’s Corner

For many families, summer means fun in the sun and cooling off at the Summerwood splash pad. This summer, the splash pad has been more popular than ever. Here are a few things to remember about the splash pad: • You must have an electronic access device to enter the gate and to activate the features. The features are on a timer. You may need to rescan your access device to activate them. • The features use a “single pass” system. This means that the water is not recirculated or treated with chemicals like the pool water. It comes from the tap, goes through the features once, and then goes into the storm drain system. The water is the same as what is in Summerwood homes. • Just like at your home, the water pressure may vary. During peak times, the water pressure may not be strong enough to operate some or all of the water features, especially when there are water restrictions in effect. Other times, the pressure may be higher. Caution should always be taken when using the splash pad. We hope your family is enjoying the expanded splash pad!

Photo of the Month Thank you to Sandhya Chaube of Barbstone Drive for submitting this touching photo of a mother duck leading her ducklings as they crossed a Summerwood street, making sure that all the little ducklings made it to the other side safely! Chaube stated, “The nature of a caring mother touched my heart. It was a great sight to see the care the duck had for its ducklings. This photograph demonstrates the best qualities of nature despite facing disturbances in their natural habitat from humans.”

Have you recently taken a great photo of your family enjoying the outdoors in Summerwood? Maybe you have taken a photo of one of our amenities or perhaps a particular landscaped area that you enjoy? We’d love to publish a favorite Summerwood photo! Please email it to summerwoodlife@gmail.com and include your name and address, along with a short paragraph about why the photo is your favorite. The winner will have his/her photo in next month’s newsletter!

summerwood Home Maintenance Corner:

A Simple Look at Your Roof Have you taken a moment to just look up? At your roof, that is. Due to windstorms several weeks back, there were many concerns about roof shingles missing. It does not always require getting up on an extended ladder to notice. Several of the missing shingles were seen by concerned neighbors, who were able to see the homes from different angles. The repair of a few missing shingles can run a homeowner roughly $300. An unrepaired shingle could then put the repair into the thousands of dollars from water damage. Take a few minutes to walk around your home and look for anything unusual. Until next time, Juan Jose Vargas with BELLEX (Summerwood resident business owner)

Lake Houston Ladies Club Vacation Watch Program

Are you aware that Summerwood residents can have their homes checked daily by a contract deputy while they are away on vacation? There is no charge for this service! Contact the Precinct 3 Constable's office at 281-427-4791, request a vacation watch, and provide pertinent information, such as name, address, phone number(s), starting date and returning date, etc. It only takes a couple of minutes to request the service, and it can provide peace of mind while you are away from home.

Lake Houston Ladies Club is a social organization dedicated to connecting women through monthly luncheon meetings, social activities, and interest groups. We will greet old friends and make new ones at the next meeting on Tuesday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Walden Country Club, 18100 Walden Forest Drive, in Humble. The club welcomes new members from all surrounding areas. Several interest groups are available, including readers’ choice, bridge, Bunco, teatime, lunch and look, movie group, supper club, mah jongg, and girls’ night out. Many of the groups continue through the summer months. There are also events during the year that include spouses or significant others. The club is an excellent way to meet new people and make new friends. To learn more about the club, visit our website (www.lakehoustonladiesclub.com), or call Linda at 832-379-3009.

summerwood Wood Fencing Standards Must be Harmonious Within the Neighborhood All residents are encouraged to maintain, repair, and keep up the best appearance of their fences possible. No one wants to see fencing that is in disrepair and distracts from the beauty of our neighborhood. Of course, there comes a time when wood fences need to be and should be replaced. • When replacing a fence, it must be of like material and height, as originally installed by the builder, in order to maintain harmony with surrounding fences. • Clear sealant is permitted. • Paint, stain, and tinted sealant is prohibited. In order to prevent inconsistent color matches with the fences throughout the community, the application of any paints, stains, or tinted sealant is prohibited on any lot fencing. By prohibiting the application of any painted, stained, or tinted product, the fences maintain a more harmonious and consistent appearance throughout the community. Architectural Guidelines can be found by signing in to www. summerwoodlife.com, clicking on the Document Library tab, and then selecting Architectural Review Committee.

Crickets

Field crickets are a common sight around homes in late summer into autumn. These insects are about 1” long when fully grown. Crickets are dark brown to black with large hind legs used for jumping. They also have two cerci, or appendages that come off the tip of the abdomen. Female crickets have a large sword-like structure, the ovipositor, protruding from the tip of the abdomen. The ovipositor is used to deposit eggs into soil. Crickets feed on plant material as well as other insects. They are able to cause damage to seedlings and sometimes large populations can be destructive. Large masses of dead crickets around doorways or other areas can be distasteful to view and cause a foul odor. Field crickets are primarily outdoor insects, but may occasionally venture indoors. When crickets do come indoors, they may bother residents with their chirping. Males chirp to attract a mate creating the sound by rubbing their forewings together. Cricket management is more easily accomplished in the summer when nymphs, who cannot fly, are present. Unfortunately, this usually isn’t when large populations of crickets are discovered. Before turning to pesticides to manage your cricket problems, try these ideas:

12

Summerwood Life - September 2016

• Turn off outside lights at night or use bulbs that are less attractive to insects • Seal cracks & crevices where insects can enter with sealant • Remove debris stacked near the structure • Keep lawn & surrounding areas mowed • Stuff weep holes with copper mesh For more information or help with identification, contact Wizzie Brown, Texas AgriLife Extension Service Program Specialist at 512.854.9600.
