Get to Know Your Neighbors by Jackie Devine

"The key to this business is personal relationships." That's what Jerry McGuire said in his hit movie by the same name in 1996. And, that is what entrepreneur, family man, and coach Greg Riddle is saying today. If you haven't had the chance to meet your Fairfield neighbor, you are going to want to seek him out because he represents everything your intuition tells you is "good with the world." Born and raised in Cypress, at 18, he began his career, right out of high school, working in the warehouse of General AC Supply off Barker Cypress. Within a few years, he was married and elevated to inside sales. At 22 he had strapped on his tools and worked his way into a lead technician position with the company. His next career

move was to apply for his license. "It was then; I realized that I had risen as high as I was going to go. There wasn't much room for growth unless I had a license and could go into management. But in my opinion, if I was going to get my license, I wasn't going to work for somebody else. I was interested in bet-tering my family and decided to split off and go on my own," he reflected. With four years in all facets of heating and air conditioning industry under his belt, a baby on the way and $400 in the bank, Greg decided to take the plunge. "I came home and told my wife I had a plan. I was going to start my own busi-ness. And with confidence, I told her if it didn't work out, I would mow yards or do whatever it took. She knew I was going to work hard to make it happen and she was completely supportive of my dream. So, here we are today." He's said with a smile. "To get business, I decided I was going to have to go out and place door hangers on homes. At that time we had no cell phone. So, I got a pager. I knew if people had a problem; they didn't want to wait. They wanted to talk to somebody, and they wanted to get scheduled quickly. So recognizing their dilemma, I put on my flyer (Continued on Page 7)

(Continued from Page 6) that I guaranteed, a call back within 10 minutes. "My first customer called while I was walking the streets putting flyers on doors. I had to run back to my vehicle which was about a half mile away. Then, I had to drive to the nearest payphone. Luckily, they had not called anybody else. I scheduled the appointment and drove over. Fortunately, they needed a new sys-tem, and I was able to put it in for them. In fact, that was 18 years ago, and they are still a customer today. "From that first client, there were ups and downs, there were slow times, and there were busy times. I just continued to pass out flyers. I slowly started gather-ing some new customers. But primarily we grew from referrals. Looking back, I needed the flyers to get the first clients, but after that, it was the referrals that caused our success. "Working out of our home, as a family, we had to consolidate. We went down to one vehicle. We took the cars we had as kids and traded them for a truck. I took my wife to work in the morning. Then, I would head off and do my business, and circle around and pick her up at the end of the day. My mother even got in-volved. She went to work as my first dispatcher answering phones and schedul-ing jobs. As important as she was to my operation, she never took a paycheck. At that time we were living in a house, rented to us by my wife's parents. From there, after our business had grown enough, we were

able to buy our first home. We moved into Inwood Park in Fairfield. After our family had grown, we needed a larger home, so we relocated to the Autumn Park Section." Today the boys are 16, 14 and 10. When not working, Greg is usually spending time with three kids that play in multiple sports. Translated: he's usually at the baseball, football or soccer field. When asked, why Fairfield? He pondered for a moment then said, "We choose to move into Fairfield because it was a family oriented community, the sports facili-ties, a sports association, three elementary schools a middle school. It was a natural choice for us; it had everything we wanted our for our kid's interests and involvement. We have no intention to move anytime soon. We've always loved Cypress. We've grown up here and plan on retiring here. That is where our busi-ness is." Remembering the past, "Growing up, Cypress was very different from what it is today. Hwy 290 was a two-lane undivided road. We used to drive out on some of the roads that are very popular now. We could sit there and count minutes before another car would drive by. Something you can hardly do now. Watching it grow has been amazing. I remember my parents telling me stories of how far they had to drive just to go to a grocery store." (Continued on Page 9)

(Continued from Page 7) Greg's early years would probably remind us much of Ozzie and Harriet or Leave it to Beaver. His dad was a piping engineer; his mother was a stay-at-home mom until he was about 10. Then she became one of the first employees of the up and coming Compaq Computer. His sister and her family live in Cypress and his brother also in the air condition, and heating industry resides in Tomball. As we came to the close of the interview, I asked Greg, "What do you know for sure?" He responded, "I don't know a lot for sure. But in business I know, if you just treat people fairly that you are bound for success. From a business stand-point, we are 100% the customer service business even though we fix air condi-tioners." With a chuckle, he said, "I am pretty sure that is one of the things that drove me into starting my own business was the lack of customer service." Pensively he said, "As I look back on my grandfather, one childhood memory stands out. He had a refrigerator go out while I was staying there. He frantically flipped through the Yellow Pages trying to find a repair person, so all the food didn't spoil. Calling around and he had some difficulty finding anyone that would answer the phones. Eventually, he did find someone. I remember the guy being very professional, very well dressed, used his manners. He had the parts on the truck got the re-frigerator up and running in no time. I'll never forget my grandfather looking at me saying, 'That's

just good old fashioned service.'" After a few moment's consideration, he said, "That is one on the things we strive for: customer service first and foremost. We have to fix air conditioners, but we can't fix air conditioners if people aren't calling us because we don't treat them fairly. It's how we have based everything." Greg is devoted to serving in more than just trying to give back to the community and through sponsorships. He loves to work with kids. "Being in the air-conditioning business and being an entrepreneur, it doesn't have an off switch. It just never ends. You can be laying in bed at night and thinking what you have to do tomorrow." He says. "Working with the kids is different. That is the one place where you can just turn it all off. Kids don't care what you do for a living. They don't care if they even have air conditioning. They just want to go out and have fun. I enjoy experiencing and being a part of that and watching them grow. A lot of the ones I first coached are now in high school, and I am watching them grow and play ball." He sighs. "And what do I now for sure: I know for sure that children count. Not only my kids, but they also don't have to be my own, I enjoy working with them all. (Continued on Page 10)

"You obviously stumped me with the question about "life." As I sat down at the dinner table last night with my family (yes we are a little traditional), I was telling them a little about my day. That question "What do you know for sure?" came up. My kids reminded me about two of my favorite sayings. "You get back out of life what you put into it. The more you invest into any situa-tion, the greater your return will be. (sports, life, marriage, job, etc.)" "In school, you learn your lesson, and then you take your test. In life, you take your test, and then you learn your lesson." Then they brought up the next question. Were you stressed! *:) happy They have heard me preach, "Stress is the feeling of losing control of a situation. Stay in control of the situation or the situation will control you." For all our readers, this is a testament to why Greg's business thrives and a fami-ly survives... Greg and his family are featured on the cover of this issue.

When Kelly, the publisher of Fairfield Community Gazette, approached me about creating a monthly "Focus on Family" column, I morphed the idea into "Get to Know Your Neighbor." I felt we have quite a few folks in our community that don't necessarily live in a nuclear family but are fascinating and worth meeting. My first "Get to Know Your Neighbor" was Greg Riddle. He is truly someone you will want to meet and call your friend. However, I realized during our interview that he is also an entrepreneur and future community leader. So, that led me to the need for another column, one that focuses on entrepreneurs. Publisher Kelly agreed. He said, "Entrepreneurs deserve recognition. So, in the coming months, we will also highlight Fairfield Entrepreneurs. People that have figured out that: Entrepreneur + Capital = Products + Customers = Business. For this month, please take the time to read how Greg accomplished the impossible on a shoestring and then Senior Spotlight Star Charlotte Byrne. At the age of 56, she is just shy of what many consider a senior, but her drive, determination, and belief is the process of graceful aging makes her story applicable to all of us.

SPOTLIGHT ON SENIORS by Jackie Devine If you or your children attended the former Fairfield Kids Club Pre-school at the Fairfield Athletic Club as early as 1999, utilized the Club, took part in Athletic Club activities, or were involved in our infamous Fairfield Triathlon, you've bumped into Charlotte Byrne. Better yet, if you have taken swim lessons, were a lifeguard, enjoyed Summer Camp, used a personal trainer or participated in women’s softball, chair fitness, water aerobics, boot camp, yoga, Pilates, or Zumba, you not only know Charlotte, you call her your friend. Charlotte is what we in Texas would call a firecracker: bold and free-spirited, explosive with energy and full of excitement. "I was born in a car in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My sweet father, now in Heaven, was quoted in the local newspaper saying, 'I was running every stop sign, but did not make it to the hospital. When I heard a little cry, I knew everything was all right.'" Charlotte shared, “I entered the world with ‘a thankful to be alive attitude.’ " Some 25 years ago, Charlotte prayed a simple prayer, The Prayer of Jabez, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." As then, her desire continues to be that she helps and encour-ages others all for God’s glory. Her prayers have been answered, al-lowing her to serve her family, neighborhood, community and church. “I appreciate my father and mother for taking me to church and shar-ing the Bible. As a 6th grader, I gave my heart to Jesus. I always loved music. I attended Young Life and was the only girl guitarist among a band of long-haired teenage boys," she reflected. Charlotte grew up in Houston and attended Bunker Hill Elementary, Memorial Jr. High, and Westchester High School. Throughout high school, she loved playing all sports, tennis, swim team, softball, vol-leyball, cross country and track. She attended the University of Texas at Austin, Graduated 1983 with Finance Degree and the honors Co-Ed Intramural Champs in Football, a Chi Omega and Sweetheart of Sig-ma Chi. After graduation, she worked for Merrill Lynch in Dallas, New York City and Houston. She and her sister became roommates in Dallas and took up running 10 miles around White Rock Lake daily. They married in October of 1988 and honeymooned in Maui. First son Ryan was born in New York. In 1992 moved to Houston. Sean, Shannon, and Cameron were born in Texas. The Byrnes moved to Fairfield in 1995. Myles and Charlotte attended Second Baptist Church serving in AWANA, Prayer Coordinators, Bible Study Leader in Motherwise, Myles was a Deacon. After Cameron was born in 1997, Charlotte be-came a stay at home mom. She began working at the Fairfield Athletic Club in 1999 as a preschool teacher, director, lifeguard supervisor, summer camp director, swim lesson coordinator, and swim instructor. In 2005, she became a personal trainer and taught fitness classes. In addition to serving as President of Fairfield Women's Club, she has served as the Race Director of the Fairfield Triathlon which has raised $87,480 for local charities, since 2010. Charlotte started working for Tru Tri Sports in 2011. Her passion for triathlons and her Run Gate Analysis Certification, make her a perfect addition to the team. Her daughter, Shannon, and she are on the Tru Tri Sports Racing Team that will compete in six or more races in 2017. The Vintage Park Half Marathon on April 9, 2017, and Katy Flatlands, biking 100 miles in July. Charlotte began working at Avanti Senior Living in August 2015 as the Fitness Coordinator. She enjoys encouraging the residents through strength and balance classes. She is very passionate about health and fitness, has a certification in Nutrition and believes a plantbased diet is a key to longevity. Exercising every day is invigorating and will keep you young. Setting goals and celebrating your successes will keep you moving forward. Myles and Charlotte, have served at Lakewood Church since 2001. They have been Prayer Partners, Home Group Leaders, Section Hosts. Myles, an ordained minister, makes hospital visits. They love to dance, laugh and exercise together. For example, they rode to Aus-tin, completing the MS150 bicycle ride in 2014 and they plan to do the Cypress Triathlon this July. Their son, Ryan and his wife, Carrie are serving in Fairbanks, Alaska as missionaries and will be moving to Huntsville, Texas. Sean gradu-ated from UT Dallas in Mechanical Engineering and works as a project engineer for Legrand. Shannon works for Texas Managerial Medical Services. Cameron works at H.E.B. Shannon and Cameron both at-tend community college. Looking back, she commented, "I have enjoyed working with John Holladay, Lisa Schneider, and Darlene Sedelmeyer at the Fairfield Athletic Club. I have loved working in Fairfield and seeing the children I taught in Preschool now in college. When asked, her most deep felt belief, she responded, "I believe con-tentment in life begins with a grateful heart. I thank God every day for my blessings of family and health. I realize that every day is a Gift. Miracles happen every day! And I believe in the words spoken long ago by Theodore Roosevelt, “Believe you can, and you're halfway there.' " After pondering Charlotte gave us one last thought, "I have a chal-lenge for the readers: Take a little notebook, every morning write the date at the top of the page. Expect God to do something amazing that day and jot it down, at the end of the year, will you have a book full of blank pages? No, you will not! When it comes to our Salyards entrepreneur Jake Johnson, she was right on the mark. Kaylee Pace, the creator of Jake’s Atomic Salsa website, couldn’t have been more accurate in her recent post: “I'm so proud of my client Jake's Atomic Salsa. I was with them from the very first publication and am still working with them now. In just five short months he has managed to gain over 3,000 fans, been in two magazines, broadcasted on national television, featured in multiple newspapers, had a live interview on the radio, has a commercial on the Outdoor Cooking Show and placed his salsa into 14 retail stores and even that is still growing! I couldn't be more proud to have been a part of that. To watch this little boys dreams come true is awesome. His motto is "Anything is possible, " and he lives up to that every single day. It's inspiring. We should all take a lesson from this kid.” In addition to maintaining honor roll status at school, his January schedule was overwhelming: He completed an after school interview in his favorite place, Texas A&M, for The Battalion. • He placed his salsa in Market 1023 as part of their Grand Reopening on 110 N. Main Street in Downtown Bryan. Market 1023 is an online shop featuring handmade and repurposed furniture and home decor. After renovating their own home and doing custom orders for their friends and family, they decided to launch an online shop based in Bryan/College Station, Texas. • On January 10th he stepped up his production pace. His first production order was placed on November 10. At that time, he ordered 3,895 jars of salsa and thought it would last forever! By January 10 he was already receiving another order for the same amount. • He attended a number of Salsa Sampling Meet & Greets at several Ace Hardware stores that now carry his product. July 4th Parade Yes, July 4 Parade. I know this is months away, but after the July 4th parade last July, there were many facebook comments that the parade needed a band. Since schools are out for the summer, this is an almost impossible task. Also, the Fairfield Women’s Club budget for the parade is under $100, so renting a band is kind of out of the question. However, there were many, many posts from Fairfield residents saying they would love to be part of a band. So here is your chance to become a part of the first ever Fairfield Marching Band. If you want to organize a band, or be part of a band for the parade, please email us at fairfieldwomensclub@gmail.com. Fairfield Women’s Club will not be organizing this band, but we will let you know who is interested.

March Winner of Fairfield Yard of the Month This month our judges had a challenge of finding the winner in the huge section of Fairfield Central. After driving for several days, they made a decision to divide the larger section in half since Fairfield Central has 1,882 homes and Fairfield South has 2,201. They will be naming the individual parts of the larger sections, so readers will know the exact areas featured. For the month of March, the sections featured are: • Garden Grove Village • Chappel Ridge Village • Lake Ridge Congratulations to Laurie and Jason White of 15611 Wildwood Run in Chappell Ridge Village. After talking with homeowner Jason, he confided that Laurie does all of the yard work, even the mowing. What an elegant front yard!!! The manicured shrubs, at six different levels in height, and the various shades of greenery catches your eye right away. The flagstone sidewalk is completely lined with beautifully trimmed boxwoods. There are two raised brick flowerbeds out in the middle of the yard with Pittosporum, Ligustrum, Boxwood, and one flower bed has a beautiful black lantern that matches the trim on the house and the black shudders. Closer to the house are two beautiful accent trees that are trimmed to perfection. It is easy to see the love and hard work that have gone into making this yard so beautiful. Please take a ride by the White’s beautiful yard. It is located off of Chappell Knoll Drive in Chappell Ridge Village.

Fairfield area swim team

The Fairfield Area Swim Team (FAST) will start their 25th year representing the Fairfield Community. The team’s purpose is to offer local children the opportunity to develop and enhance their swimming abilities, learn the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship and enable them to participate in a sport they will love. We are excited to have a new head coach this season, Coach Taylor Wohrley. Taylor has been swimming since the age of four. She began her swimming career at the summer league stage, and finished her career at the Division I collegiate stage. Taylor has previously represented the United States in Australia and Canada as part of the National Junior Team, and represented the U.S in China for the World University Games. She is a three-time Olympic Trial Qualifier in both backstroke events and a four-time NCAA qualifier. Taylor was also the Big Ten Freshman of the Year during her time swimming for Indiana University. Taylor graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Communications. She is currently enrolled in University of Houston as a masters student pursuing her masters degree in Social Work.

Taylor has coached club swimming at Cypress-Fairbanks Swim Club for the past four years. Coach Taylor is excited to work with all of the swimmers, and firmly believes sound technique and a great work ethic lead to fast swimming. Calling all alumni FAST swimmers; we are excited about our 25th season as a swim team. We would like you to join us celebrating this milestone, please send an email to president@swim4fast with photos and your contact information. The celebration event will be open to the public and more details will be posted on our website. For the 2017 season we will welcome back over 200 swim families and would like to invite you to join the FAST family. The online registration will start this month. Over the past several years, there has been incidents of vandalism in Fairfield such as cement trash cans destroyed, doggy bags around the lakes emptied by pulling every bag out of the holder and polluting the lake area, porta-potty at the baseball field was set on fire, graffiti in the tunnels/ channels, a cinderblock wall being taken apart and thrown in channel behind the baseball fields. We are asking Fairfield residents for assistance in preventing or catching the responsible party/ parties that are doing these acts of vandalism. Jan. 19, 2017— C h e r y l Fi s h e r, the principal at Keith Elementary School, was named the incoming principal for Wells Elementary School on Jan. 19. She will officially assume the new role on March 20. Opening in the 2017-2018 school year, Jim and Pam Wells Elementary School will be part of an educational village site that includes Bridgeland High School and a future middle school at 10607 Mason Road.

In case some of our Fairfield residents missed it, January was School Board Recognition Month—Mr. LaCoke, Ault parents and Kieth students wanted to show our school board members how much they appreciate their dedication and hard work by producing an Ault Car Rider Karaoke video. If you haven’t had a chance to view it, go to YouTube and type Ault Car Rider Karaoke-School Board Edition in the search box. That search will take you to the School Board video and scores of other videos they have pro-duced throughout the years. Ault Assistant Principal Meredith Akers directed and produced the Ault Car Rider Karaoke video. She has also created a variety of topical music videos to help motivate and encourage Ault students to succeed. 2017 Seniors of Cypress-Fairbanks ISD who graduated from Ault Elementary

Junior High Division Salyards eighth-grade student Emma Keiser’s artwork, “Southern Beauty,” won a gold medal in the Middle School division of the HLSR School Art Program. The Ault Elementary PTO awards a $1,000 scholarship to the top two applicants graduating from any High School and graduated fifth grade from Ault Elementary. Scholarship applications and guidelines can be obtained from the Counselors’ office. The deadline for submitting applications is April 17, 2017.

School News Salyards to perform at Music for All National Festival by Joe Glass Salyards Middle School Symphonic Winds has been invited to perform at the 2017 Music for All National Festival, presented by Yamaha, the nation’s most prestigious festival for school instrumental music ensembles. The 26th annual Festival will take place in Indianapolis, March 9-11, 2017. Salyards Middle School Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Joe Glass, Amy Gonzalez, and Charles Roberman, was selected to perform by a panel of esteemed music educators by recorded audition. Music for All is one of the nation’s largest and most influential organizations advocating in support of music education. The Music for All National Festival comprises the National Concert Band Festival, Sandy Feldstein National Percussion Festival, Middle School National Music Festival, Chamber Music National Festival and three national honor ensembles: the Honor Band of America, the Jazz Band of America, and the Honor Orchestra of America. Salyards Middle School Symphonic Winds is one of only seven middle school concert bands from across the nation selected to perform at the 2017 Festival. They will perform in concert, be evaluated by renowned music educators and participate in master classes and special events. There will be 59 invited concert bands,

They have had great success with individuals getting very excited about their descendants. Cypress Top Historic Park Fa i r f i e l d a n d i t ' s surrounding community may be some distance from Houston, but here in Cypress, we are beginning to boast some of the same amenities as our older more established neighbor. One case in point is Cypress Top Historic Park. Less than 5 miles f r o m t h e Fa i r f i e l d Activity Center you will find remnants of Texas history including a true-to-life historical complex which houses an original Texas homestead, an Humble service station, the Juergen Dance Hall the Juergen General Merchandise Store, and a replica of a train depot and farm equipment. The park's land was donated to Harris County by descendants of the original owners of the site, Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Juergen. The Cypress Historical Society, housed in the bright yellow train depot replica at the back of the property, is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm and every third Saturday from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. In addition to offering visitors the opportunity to learn Cypress history, in-house genealogists are available to share the wealth of information they have accumulated through years of research and help you set up your family tree and show you how to navigate ancestry.com and Family Search. Cypress Top Historic Park is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. The buildings are only open on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Formal tours of the museum complex – led by staff or volunteers – begin from Juergen’s Store at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Juergen Dance Hall is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
