Cheers to Good Friends and Great Food by Jackie Devine

“Sometimes you wanna go where everyone knows your name, and they're always glad you came.” Those words may be from “Cheers,” but they’ also sentiments of the folks who frequent Andy’s Kitchen. That’s just the type of atmosphere that longtime Fairfield resident and second-generation restauranteur, Andy Correa wanted to create when he envisioned opening his casual diner in our community. “With fast food chains so plentiful I knew I wanted to carve out a different niche,” he explained. “I began developing plans for Andy’s Kitchen to be a place where I could build great customer relationships and make people feel special while at the same time serve the highest quality food and drinks possible.” “I grew up in Cypress, graduated from Langham Creek, spent twenty-four years in the Operations Department at CFISD and at

Hometown Team Publishes Book

by Jackie Devine

When is the last time you put the skids on your hectic schedule, turned off the technology, found a comfy place to relax, grabbed one or two of your kiddos, and shared a good book? If you haven’t done that lately, now is maybe the time to create a magical experience with your family that will leave lasting memories and have

a lifelong impact. And, if you are looking for a cleverly illustrated, kid-driven, whimsical book with an over the top plot, you can’t go wrong with a fresh-off-the-press copy of Zombies Don’t Eat Veggies! The best part is, "Zombies" was created by two of our own Fairfield residents, author Megan and illustrator Jorge Lacera. As a married couple, after garnering a solid foundation in media entertainment as writers, designers, and consultants, Megan and Jorge launched Studio Lacera. Today, just a sampling of their clients include companies such as Hasbro, Ghost Story Games, and Random House. Megan explained, “Our core competency is "story." For example, if a toy company develops a toy, they typically want to develop a book series, movie, and social media content. Our expertise is taking that one little nugget and making it bigger. From there we generate ideas, come up with the storylines, the characters, what they will look like, and what world they will exist in.” I asked where the idea for Zombies Don’t Eat Veggies! originated. Megan jumped in, “We knew we wanted to do a zombie book. We like horror movies and pop culture. Lots of kids play with monsters and “scary” characters. Kai, our six-year-old definitely does. Of course, we couldn't let him watch scary movies or tv shows. We wanted to do something that reflected his and other kids’ interests but in a safe way. So we came up with a character that had more humanity and humor than a regular zombie. Jorge added, “We developed Mo, a veggie-loving zombie, as our main character. Kai was very resistant to vegetables. We wanted to introduce him and other kids to the idea that vegetables could be funny, interesting, and delicious. Mo doesn’t eat the typical zombie food. He’s different.” Working with the storyline had a positive effect on Kai. As they started discussing the book with him and showing him the various drafts, they saw him becoming more open to trying new foods and accepting of veggies like cucumbers and tomatoes. Copyright © 2019 Peel, Inc.

Now, they are part of his regular diet. “Zombies” is also based on our family,” Megan continued. “We've included both English and Spanish in the book. Jorge was born in Colombia, and he speaks both English and Spanish. Therefore, we wanted to incorporate Spanish and English and also a mix of traditional American food and Latin cuisine. So you will see that multi-cultural flavor reflected in the book.” For Megan and Jorge, it's a calling for them to present diverse stories that reflect differences in people and families. They're currently involved in several projects that reflect multi-cultural perspectives. To date, the Laceras have submitted a draft for book two of their Zombies Don’t Eat Veggies contractual agreement. Opting not to make their second book a series book, "The next one" Jorge elaborated, "involves a plot that entertains, and at some level teaches life lessons, by offering a broader view of a child's world which emphasizes working together, truth, and goodness. The storyline centers around a group of kids whose home is going to be torn down and the lengths they go through to save it.” In closing, I asked them if they had any advice to “would be” authors and illustrators. Megan replied, “Persistence is the key: it is possible to write part-time or as a professional, but it isn't an easy road. There’s a lot of rejection, and some days just don’t seem to come together. If you can stay with it, and keep learning, you will eventually get better; you'll find a way to break through. “I know people who are breaking through at eighteen and others at eighty.” Also, to answer my question on “ Why Fa i r f i e l d ? ” Jo r g e emphasized, “We've lived in a lot of different places across the nation from the East Coast to the West Coast. We love Fairfield. We've lived here for nearly two years and plan on staying. We love being close to Megan’s sister and her family and our friends in Chappell Ridge. We have found the Fairfield community to be diverse, which is what we were looking for coming from the West Coast, and at the same time inclusive. It is a place where friends and family reside.” Find out more about the Laceras and “Zombies” at www. studiolacera.com.You can pick up your copy of Zombies Don't Eat Veggies! on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, IndieBound, Walmart.com or Target.com. It's also available at Harris County Libraries. The Laceras will have a booth at the Fairfield 4th event—if you buy the book and bring it to the booth, they will gladly sign it! Dr. Donald Stafford, Orthopedic Surgeon with UT Ortho, discussed knee and hip health and how to prepare for surgery and how to recuperate afterward! Julie Winkelmann, Occupational Therapist with Memorial Hermann Rogers, demonstrated a variety of “stay-healthy” exercises. Natalie Rogers, Business Development with UT Ortho and Kara Kovalsky, Senior Marketing & Communications fielded questions and answers on how to take advantage of services offered by some of the region’s top medical specialists.

Sharing information with residents at Fairfield Creek Estates is of prime concern to our neighborhood Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital Health System. On March 20th they sent two of their medical specialists as well as their community communications team to offer advice on staying healthy.

Trust the health system that cares for more stroke patients than any other. Working with stroke specialists from Mischer Neurosciences and McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, Memorial Hermann provides the community’s most advanced, comprehensive stroke care. And with our Neuro ICUs and specialized stroke rehabilitation services through TIRR Memorial Hermann and the Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Network, we offer a full continuum of stroke care – from diagnosis through recovery – to get you back to where you want to be. Yard of the Month

Submitted by Deborah Worley, Yard of the Month Chairperson We are all happy to see Spring in Fairfield. The sunshine and flowers renew us all. This month we visited One fourth of Fairfield South. The areas included: Blue Meadow including the ne west development of homes b e h i n d C V S , Ba k e r’s Ridge, Autumn Park and Bluebonnet Glen. The month of May we are featuring the home of Don and Helen Pulnik. Their home is located at 14902 Blue Egret Drive in the Blue Meadow subdivision. Both Don and Helen took me on a tour of their colorful floral gardens. Gardening is a true passion for both Don and Helen. This is a love they truly share and work at together. All of the planting areas are professionally bordered in decorative stone at the front of the house, left side of the driveway, around every tree, at the front right corner and along the sides of the home and the corner planting by the back yard gate. Their yard, like most in their area has mature trees, depending on the time of year some will be adding to the colorful blooms in their yard. Don and Helen walked me through each planter and talked about every plant, they knew every name and how to spell them (thank you Don). I love it. Each planter was planned with blooms that will follow each other. As one passes its peak May-2019 Honorable Yards flowering period another will take the stage. There are some they Blue Meadow will dig up and replace. 22218 Buttercup Fields Tr., 22206 Buttercup Fields Tr. What does Independence Day mean to you? By Joan Hagan

Independence Day, also k n o w n a s t h e Fo u r t h o f July in the U.S., is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the 13 American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies. In addition there are various other public and private events that celebrate the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States. In Fairfield, we proudly join in celebrating Independence Day…or, as we like to call it, The Fourth @ Fairfield! Kick off your day with our colorful parade with bands, firetrucks, scouts, floats, and much more! The parade leaves from Ault Elementary at 9AM and winds through the neighborhood to Central Park. Then, following the parade head over to Salyards Middle School for a fun-filled community event, from 10AM-2PM. Activities include inflatables, a dunk tank, live entertainment, food trucks, game booths, and more! This year, game booths and vendors will be inside the school. If you and/or your company would like to be a sponsor, a vendor, or one of our entertainers, there’s still time! Just go to the Fairfield’s Women’s Club website at www.fairfieldwomensclub.org for more information. You can also visit the Fourth @ Fairfield event page on the Fairfield Women’s Club Facebook page. We welcome singers, dancers, musicians, magicians, etc. for 15-20 minute sets. Come join the fun with us at The Fourth @ Fairfield! The proceeds from this event go back into the Fairfield community to benefit our schools, fire station, and constables. We can’t do this without community support! Thanks to the Fairfield Village Community Association for being the major sponsor of our July 4th Parade and Festivities. Fairfield Women’s Club, who produces this event, also wishes to thank Cojen Construction; Karen Clements, Realtor, Better Homes Gary Greene; Goldie Golden Realtor, Sky Real Estate; Andrea Curran Realtor, Zuri Properties; Dawn Fore, Broker Associate, RE/MAX Professional Group; Rae Worley Realty Group; and Randall Bolin of Bolin Designs Pools, for sponsoring some of our activities. Fairfield Women's Club The Fairfield Women’s Club had some wonderful programs this year and we would like to recap some of the fun for all. We had a wonderful time at our meeting at the Eclectic House/ Devine Wine, then in February we pampered our members with facial masks and lotions then topped that off with a wine tasting by our very own member, Kate Conrey. In March, we were honored with the presentation by Dr. Danny Talwar from Memorial Herman Hospital who helped us recognize heart issue with women. He was wonderful and we followed his presentation with a game of LRC, which was a BLAST! We will culminate our year with our Annual Banquet. The club offered to pay for half of our banquet cost but it was unanimously voted to save that money for our Fairfield Charities and members pay for their own meal. This year’s banquet will be at Salt Grass Steak House on May 21st at 6:00 pm

News You Can Use

Ready, Set, Test

The STAAR is the state of Texas testing program based on state curriculum standards in core subjects including reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. All public school students in Texas, grades 3–12, take STAAR tests. Administered in the spring, STAAR tests are given to students at their own school, in regular classrooms that have been cleared and set up to make it easy to focus on the test. STAAR tests are designed to measure what students are learning in each grade and whether or not they are ready for the next grade. The goal is to ensure that all students receive what they need to be academically successful. Meeting these individual student needs depends greatly on schools, parents, and community members working together. CCFISD takes the STAAR test very seriously. So do neighborhood schools, teachers and students. On April 5th, Bridgeland High School held a pep rally at Ault Elementary to emphasize the importance of taking the test and to encourage them to do their very best. Bridgeland is the high school that Ault students will attend in the future.

Salyards Student’s Art at Texas State Capitol

Congratulations to Salyards Orchestra

Students from Hopper, Salyards, and Thornton middle schools were named winners in the House District 132 Student Art Contest and will have their pieces displayed in State Rep. Gina Calanni’s office at the Texas State Capitol and the district’s office in Katy. After receiving a number of excellent pieces of artwork, the district, which serves CFISD and Katy and Waller school districts, expanded the selection of winners from four in two categories to eight. CFISD placed two winners in each category (Capitol Artwork and School Mascot Artwork). “We were very impressed with the talent of the students and would like to thank each participant and school for the work that went into creating the art pieces,” District Director Kaycee Kube said in a letter to the winning schools. Salyards Middle School eighth-grade student Paxton Hendricks was among four CFISD students to have their artwork recently named a winner in the House District 132 Student Art Contest. The pieces will be displayed in State Rep. Gina Calanni’s office at the Texas State Capitol and the district’s office in Katy.
