Around Fairfield From The Editor's Desk It’s already August. The long lazy days of summer are almost behind us. To recapture that endlesssummer feeling, consider shutting down your laptop, turning off your phone, and heading toward the pool. But before you go, grab a good book and a tall glass of iced tea. Then, you’ll be all set. If that isn’t a possibility, how about perusing the August Fairfield Community Gazette where we’ve recounted some of the fun we’ve had this

summer in our neighborhoods. Our cover story is dedicated to the Fairfield Women’s Club’s recordbreaking Independence Day parade and 4th of July festivities. You’ll find plenty of photos to remember the day. Plus, we eagerly applaud our Fairfield sons and daughters for grasping the brass ring and others for unselfishly giving back to the community. Please be sure to read about their accomplishments and the local organizations like 4-H and the Kiwanis clubs that are looking for new members and volunteers.

As I’ve said time and time again, my sole purpose is to provide timely, accurate, and positive news that you can read, enjoy, and use. Please contact me at jackiedevine@peelinc.com when you come upon something newsworthy. We love to hear from you. Speaking of which, here are a few comments from our July readers: Thank you, for the story on JJ Goss. Thomas Coffman I’ve been reading the Fairfield Gazette for 25+ years. This is the best cover story yet. Thanks. PS: Love the flyovers. Brad Webster First of all, I want to thank you for honoring Garrick and me in such a way. Maybe I’m a little biased, but I think this edition was exceptional. I love how you spotlighted so many of us. I honestly feel like I’m surrounded by military, and this makes me very proud of those who serve. Absolutely incredible stories. Also, I love how you invited other veterans to submit their names for the November issue. So nice. My guess is that you will have a very long list of Fairfield Veterans. You truly have a gift. By the way, I loved the June issue that told so much about COF too. You are awesome!!!! May God continue to bless you. Carol I received my copy of the Gazette yesterday. You did a wonderful job, and I am very proud of it. Thank you for taking the time to do that. It will be something I keep forever. Zack Rogers Thanks for recognizing our store, Jackie! Let me know the next time you have an event. Don Crowley

of entertainment provided by 11 talented groups as they mingled inside and out sampling goodies, watching demonstrations, and gaining useful information sponsored by 31 local vendors. The Key Club—a student-led organization whose goal is to encourage leadership through serving others—supervised the inflatables. The favorite of which was the dunk tank rumored to be a massive hit with both kids and adults. Additional crowd-pleasers included tours of, and information shared by, our fire-fighters, rescue squads, police and sheriff's department regarding our first-rate Cypress emergency vehicles. And of course the food court, offering a variety of tantalizing dishes— hosted by Bahama Bucks, Super Pizza, Fresco's Fusion Grill, and Yogurtland—was a big draw. You guessed it: No one left hungry! Fairfield's Independence Day parade and its accompanying 4th of July festivities were created and orchestrated by the Fairfield Women's Club. This annual enthusiastically attended event promotes community partnerships, fosters camaraderie, and helps to make our neighborhoods a safer friendlier, more caring place to work, live, and play.

It has been 243 years since the United States of America received its birth certificate; which makes our nation the longest reigning Constitutional Republic in history. Way back on July 2, 1776, Congress voted to separate from Great Britain. Just two days later, on July 4th an early draft of the Declaration of Independence was signed by John Hancock, President of Congress and Charles Tompson, Secretary. Our precious Liberty Bell rang for the first time from the tower of Independence Hall on July 8, 1776, summoning the citizens of Philadelphia to witness the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. Afterward, John Adams proclaimed: "This day will be the most memorable epic in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival." Fairfield lived up to John Adams' prophetic proclamation by honoring that auspicious occasion last month when our community came out in force to celebrate Independence Day on July 4th. Gathering early to ensure the perfect spot, spectators donned their cameras and brought their lawn chairs or spread their blankets beneath the fragrant pines and massive shady oaks to eagerly await the big show. Promptly at 9:00, Fairfield's unique version of a patriotic Red-White-and-Blue Independence Day Parade rolled off the lot. As throngs of merrymakers cheered their friends and neighbors stationed on floats tossing beads, candy packets, and popsicles, the procession of revelers made their way to Salyards Middle School to extend the celebration. Well over a record-breaking1000 eager event goers enjoyed a variety Copyright © 2019 Peel, Inc.

The Women’s Club is proud to introduce Blake Shepherd, Grand Marshal for the Fairfield Independence Day Parade. Shepherd is still active in the Texas Reserves. He joined the army in 2013 where he served six years in active duty as a (15 bravo) helicopter engine mechanic. He was stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY; Camp Humphreys, South Korea; and Ft. Hood, Texas. He is currently continuing his service in the Army Reserves based in Ft. Worth, TX. The Shepherds, Michelle and Brant, have a daughter, Denise, and three sons, Jaden, Camren, and Leland.

their beautiful trucks. Whether you were on a float, golf cart, wagon, bike, or were walking; the parade would not be a success without all of our friends. The 4th at Fairfield was held at Salyards this year, in case of rain. It turned out great because our fabulous booth participants and entertainers could all perform in air-conditioning Thanks to our food trucks for the delicious hamburgers, tacos, pizza, ice treats, and yoga. Also, thank all of our Fairfield Women’s Club members for helping to make this day a success for our community. Our first formal meeting will be held at Bradford Creek Clubhouse, 16011 Fairfield Green Circle, Cypress, Texas 7743, on August 20th, 7:00 pm. We will learn more about this very land where we live. As we start our new year, please remember to pay your dues of $30 at the August meeting.

Teen on a Mission

by Lydia Rodriguez

My son Gabriel Rodriguez is a junior at Bridgeland High School and is also in the high school marching band. He is also the nephew of Franco Puentes, an absolute animal lover. One day out of the blue, Franco introduced him to Houston Animal Rescue Team. H.A.R.T is a 501(c)(3) dog rescue comprised of volunteers who want to make a difference in outcomes for homeless dogs and asked Gabe if he would like to volunteer. The organization, along with other rescue groups, pull dogs at risk for euthanasia from shelters all around Texas, including small rural shelters that may not have many resources. Fosters and rescue sponsors care for the dogs, obtain their needed vet services and health certificates, and work with a coordinator to get them adopted locally, regionally, and nationally. Over 1300 dogs have been saved in the last year. In 2018, Gabe took his uncle up on the offer and visited the Tomball site. He enjoyed it so much that he began volunteering walking the dogs and to play with them. He wanted to do something more to help positively impact the rescue, so he reached out to them through email and was able to get a wish list of supplies from the organization. Early in July, he held a collection drive at the Fairfield Athletic Club to garner donations to provide needed supplies because he loved the animals and felt such a connection with them. The drive ended Saturday July 5th and the turnout was great. We have included the website for HART is https://www.hartrescue.com/organization if anyone wants to donate.

We Are Winners One And All

by Jo Ann Lambert

The Fairfield Seniors of Cypress is a group of seniors (age 50 and above) mainly from in and around Cypress. They enjoy one day trip a month, where they explore a 200-mile radius of Houston, and several long-distance tours per year to discover the beauty of the US.Traveling together makes it more affordable and gives members a feeling of safety and camaraderie. Some of the fun-seekers have participated since the group's inception; others joined only recently. Several times a year, the FSC holds membership drives to attract new travelers. The Fa i r f i e l d Wo m e n ' s C l u b 4th of July Celebration is a prime example of one of those occasions. FSC staffed a booth, met a lot of new people that had no idea of the fun available to seniors throughout the year and gave away a variety of attendance prizes donated by local vendors. Two of the lucky winners were Donna Morse, the gift basket winner and Kenneth Harvey who won the BBQ bucket. If you have any questions, please e-mail Jo Ann at pstlgrl@ gmail.com or Jackie at jackie.devine@comcast.net. To be placed on their mailing list for updated information, please send your name, e-mail address, and phone number to either e-mail above.

Impact in the Cypress Area by Missy Owles

Established in the summer of 2018, the Fairfield 4-H Club has provided the youth of Fairfield and surrounding communities many opportunities for growth, leadership, and community in its first year. In our first year, we welcomed 30 active members to the club. These members participated in Rabbit Projects, Fishing Projects, Food and Nutrition Projects, and Community Service. As our club continues to grow and prosper, we plan to provide new and exciting opportunities in the areas of Leadership, Sewing, Gardening, Shooting Sports, and Consumer Decision Making. What is 4-H? 4-H is a national organization which helps young people develop life-long knowledge and skills to become engaged citizens. Through 4-H, members are also taught how to meet the diversities and challenges of today’s society by bringing together youth and adults to design programs that will teach skills for living. 4-H is truly a model of “learning by doing” teaching concept. It reaches people in their communities with delivery methods suitable to their needs. 4-H also helps to provide opportunities for families and communities to develop stronger bonds. The 4-H program is a voluntary, non-formal, educational program offered to all youth. What Opportunities are available to my youth? Young people in 4-H learn about citizenship, leadership, foods and nutrition, healthy lifestyles, outdoor education, technology, horticulture, agriculture, entrepreneurship, and much more. The 4-H program uses the learn-by-doing method of instruction to teach members about these subjects. The 4-H project that each member selects according to their interest and ability is the program’s Continued on Page 18) Copyright © 2019 Peel, Inc.

Around Fairfield Continued from Page 16) cornerstone. Projects involve setting goals and evaluating progress. The skills and knowledge learned in 4-H project work help members become more engaged individuals and citizens. You can visit https:// texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/ to view all of the projects that are available to your child. How do you join Fairfield 4-H? Begin by joining us at an informational meeting on August 19th at 7 pm at Good Shepherd UMC in Fairfield. This meeting will introduce your family to all the opportunities that 4-H has to offer. We will also lay out expectations for involvement and give you the necessary tools to get started in the programs we have to offer. How much does it cost? 4-H has a participation cost of $20 (before November 1st of each year) to $25 (November 1st and after) to join. Fairfield 4-H ask for a $15 donation from each member to cover the cost of materials, recognition, and celebration. Some projects clubs might cost something to get started—like, if you want to do photography, you’ll need a camera and money to get pictures developed. Does it matter where you live? Fairfield 4-H is open to anyone in Harris County. How old do you have to be? 4-H is for kids of almost any age. If you’re in kindergarten, first grade, or second grade, you can be in Clover Kids. From third grade to age 19, you can be in 4-H. How Can You Help? Parents are needed to lead special projects, drive 4-H’ers to activities, and much more! Your whole family can be part of a lot of 4-H activities! Club management will provide you with the necessary resources and information you need to lead a project club. Who are 4-H volunteers? 4-H Volunteers are people who care about the kids and who supervise activities. They are carefully screened and trained to make sure that 4-H’ers are safe. Introducing Good Shepherd‘s New Senior Pastor

SUNDAY

Jonathan Spencer Adult Ministries Pastor Second Baptist Church, Cypress It’s hard to believe, but summer is winding down and the new school year is just around the corner! And with every new school year comes new opportunities for our community to rally behind our local students, teachers, and administrators. With that in mind, Second Baptist Church will once again aim this year to build strong partnerships in our local schools to equip and encourage our community’s students and leaders. Whether it’s hosting CFISD events and meetings, providing volunteer mentors in the schools, or deploying staff and leadership to meet practical needs on campus, Second will be active in schools week to week. In fact, the Cypress Campus has adopted three CFISD schools, including two here in Fairfield (Ault Elementary and Salyards Middle School). To kick off this exciting new school year, Second would like to invite you and your family to join them for “Back to School Sunday” on August 25th. That weekend will feature a special time of recognition for our local teachers, administrators, and students. There will a time of prayer dedicated to all of these individuals, as well as an opportunity for them to sign up for continued prayer that week. Second will be honoring and recognizing key leaders from CFISD, Tomball ISD, Waller ISD, private schools, and more. Invite your friends and family from local schools to join us for a memorable Sunday that will prepare everyone to start the year off right. Bible Study for all ages begins at 9:30AM and Worship is at 11AM. For more info visit www.second.org/cypress or the Cypress Campus facebook page, www.facebook.com/secondcypress. Good Shepherd United Methodist Church is pleased to announce that the Rev. Matt Neely has been named the Senior Pastor effective on August 1, 2019. His first Sunday preaching will be August 18, 2019. Bishop Scott Jones and the nine District Superintendents for this area prayerfully met and narrowed the list of potential candidates to a single individual—Matt Neely. He clearly meets all the qualifications for Senior Pastor with special gifts to serve Good Shepherd. Following his seminary education, Matt spent seven years as a traveling evangelist, preaching and singing for local churches, camps, retreats, and student ministry events. After this, he served as an Associate Pastor of several Houston-area churches. Matt was the founding Pastor of the Watershed UMC in League City. Since 2013, he has been the Senior Pastor of the Parkway United Methodist Church in Sugar Land. During his tenure at Parkway, Matt has revitalized the congregation, grown the attendance, paid off the church debt, and built a new Worship Center. Matt is 48 years old. He and his wife Ginger have been married for 20 years. They have four children—Jessica, Jenna, Grace, and Noah. They look forward to many years of happy and fruitful ministry at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church.
