Get Going On Your Fitness Goals

"When it comes to health and well-being, regular exercise is about as close to a magic potion as you can get." Tich Nhat Hanh And that is about the long and short of it. If obtaining or sustaining good health in 2021 is your objective, you have plenty of options. But, one of the surest, easiest, and fastest ways to get in shape is to check into HOTWORX and develop a schedule to stay the course. Here’s what a few of your neighbors are saying about HOTWORX.

I love that I can work out safely on my own without worrying about COVID, but still be able to be competitive by following a virtual leaderboard. -Darah Jones

I had a week before a wedding and a goal weight to accomplish. I came in 4 days out of that week and totally hit that goal! I tell my friends to come because it’s clean, feels secluded and I can turn on my head phones and just let out all that stress. Also, the people are awesome, they make my day! -Ashley McRae

I love that I have discovered HOTWORX!! It's such a unique workout experience. I love the privacy and "zen time" that I get in the sauna while getting in an intense workout as well as a detox at the same time! I leave feeling amazing & accomplished. -Hannah Kubeczka

Cultivating Community Resources by Jackie Devine

6 Fairfield Community Gazette - January 2021

If you live in Cypress, you are sitting atop a gold mine of staggering proportions. As the old miners used to say, "There is gold in them thar hills!" The gold that I'm referring to is the ingenuity, talent, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindset permeating every street and neighborhood in our community. Even during these unprecedented times with such limited access to each other, I continue to pan for that gold to introduce you to people who have tapped their inner resources and combined knowledge, insight, inspiration, and vision to tackle the world's problems. Dr. LaJoyce Lawton, Methodist minister, is my latest nugget. I discovered her while walking around the lake. Drawn to each other like a moth to the flame, I uncovered a gifted woman refusing to hide her light under a bushel basket. Instead, 24/7, she focuses on beaming her light and life out into the world. Her light reaches across the globe, and so far into the future, she deserves a full-blown story, which I'm going to share with you in the near future. However, this article focuses on one of her immediate concerns, which is helping monetize ministries. She shared that graduates of her program freshly entering the field, church groups, mission agencies, evangelistically oriented ministries, and other related entities are frustrated because they don’t have the funds to help as many people as they would like. Not fully understanding what she was saying, I did my research and found that according to the Washing Post, "The coronavirus is pressing painfully on the soft underbelly of U.S. houses of worship: their finances.

Continued from Page 6 About a third of all congregations have no savings, according to the 2018-2019 National Congregations." Further, posits LifeWay Research, "Many pastors may not know the extent to which the pandemic has altered their church for months or years to come, but some say it has already brought long-term changes. "Some churches (8%) say they were forced to delete a ministry. Overall, 2% of pastors say they cut their outreach ministry, 2% got rid of their children's ministry, 2% stopped Sunday School or small groups, 1% ended student ministry, and 1% deleted other service times like Wednesday and Sunday nights." Dr. Lawton created The Multitude Experience to focus on those issues. She explained, the most recurring comment she receives from her new graduates is, “A full-time Christian ministry is my dream. What can I do to finance my ministry?” Even from the start, money is a consideration.

Copyright © 2020 Peel, Inc.

"Let's face facts, monetizing a ministry has its benefits, especially when it comes to paying the pastor, growing a congregation, ministry outside the church walls, and keeping a church alive. Over time, I've developed an outstanding network of people and a battery of business models that can undergird cash-strapped ministries." Before meeting Dr. Lawton, I experienced COVID's drain on our places of worship in our neighborhood. However, she has broadened my awareness, and I'm interested in finding out how churches can respond to this extraordinary situation where our health and economic issues are at stake. Together, like everything else we do, as I said at the beginning of this article, we can combine our resources, knowledge, insight, inspiration, and vision to tackle the world's problems and Dr. Lawton can help lead the way. Tony Has Your Back In 1948 actor Spencer Tracy commented to reporters, "Acting is not an important job in the scheme of things. Plumbing is." Truthfully, unlike Spencer, most of us don't give plumbing much of a thought until we have a problem. After talking to third-generation Gino, son of Tony Boutros owner and operator of licensed and insured, Tony's Plumbing LLC, I realize that isn't such a wise idea. We all know how important it is to build relationships with our favorite vet, car, and air conditioning repair guys. Gino has convinced me that adding a plumber to that list might be a wise idea to get a jump on our next plumbing emergency when it arises. When I asked Gino how he got into plumbing, he explained, "While in college, needing a little spending money, I started working with my father and fell in love with it. Eventually, Dad invited me to join the team. We've continued to grow, all of our employees are family members. Everyone we send to our customers’ homes is a family member. We know we can depend on them and trust them to follow our quality control mandates. The main one is that we want our customers to know that their opinions count. "When we advise about products, materials, or tools, the ultimate decision is up to them. Our opinions are just offered to help guide them. For example, there are many different brands on the market, whether dealing with faucets, water heaters, or a plethora of other products. Based on our experience, we may recommend one brand over another. But ultimately, it is their choice to decide what they select. I don't want them to feel pressured, as they may have been in the past. I always tell them at the end of the day; this is your home and your decision.

by Jackie Devine

"Moreover, I always tell them that they are welcome to give me a call if they are at Home Depot or Lowe’s and have a question. After relocating to another state, I've even had some of my customers call me to ask a plumbing question because they didn't know where else to turn. Sometimes they send me a picture or a video, and we try to problem solve over the phone." In closing, I asked Gino what is the guiding force behind Tony's Plumbing. "We want the Gazette readers to know that we are familybased and live in the community. Our ultimate goal is to build strong, lasting relationships, so the community will feel that Tony's Plumbing is not only part of the home team but a member of their family." In the final analysis, Spencer Tracey was right; plumbing and plumbers matter! For more information see Tony’s ad.

Christmas Tree by Rosie Okonski I usually like to do a Christmas charity project every year. This year, my project came about when my friend, Jamie, who is a foster mom, shared a link to this organization. I looked into sponsoring a child, but then I saw that they also had options for toy drive deliveries. I decided to share it with the neighborhood to see if anyone was interested in joining in a group donation. I got a great response from eight families who all went shopping and dropped off the toys at my home. They dropped them off along with a small message or card which we used to personalize the outside of the box since we couldn't wrap the toys. It was a huge box that our new sink was delivered in when we renovated our kitchen. We filled it almost to the top with gifts! In early December, I loaded up my 9 month old boy and we drove down to the DePelchin Children's Center in the Heights and delivered the box for their Christmas toy drive. Fairfield is a great community, and I was so happy that people reached out to get in on this Christmas project! Here are a few photos of the process.

AULT ELEMENTARY SHINES WITH GOAL

Ault Elementary was able to have a fun and joyful experience raising funds for their school this year through the platform known by the name Raise Craze. It allowed their in-class and Connect students to participate as a team showing their appreciation to donors. By completing Acts of Kindness and spreading kindness in our community, students learned to keep paying it forward every day because showing kindness to all matters. Students did everything from picking up their neighbor’s trash to collecting supplies for a local animal shelter. One student even made a Gratitude Basket for her bus driver! Their monetary goal was $25,000 to provide a pavilion over their hardtop, resume building their literacy library, and continue educational platforms for students/teachers. If anyone would like to contribute to Ault Elementary fundraising efforts, they can send an email to aultprimaryfundraising@gmail.com.

by Kevin Kays The 2020 Bridgeland Bears Volleyball Team is the proud recipient of their Second District Championship. The Bears are new to the Cypress Varsity sports scene, but you would never know that by watching them play. Bridgeland High School Volleyball has only been around for three years, but already has two district championships under their belt. After winning two consecutive district championships, going 29-1 in district, and having an overall record of 64-9 the last two seasons, you would think they have had many years as a varsity program. In addition to winning District Championship again this year, they were also Bi-District Champions and Area Champions going three rounds deep into the playoffs. It was a huge accomplishment to go the deepest into the playoffs out of all the high schools in Cypress. Congratulations to the 2020 Bridgeland High School Volleyball team. 10 Fairfield Community Gazette - January 2021

Mary was an addict living on the streets for 15 years when she came to the Hope Center. She had been sex traded by her mother since the age of seven. At the Hope Center, the volunteers immediately fell in love with her, helped walk her to sobriety, found her a job, and helped her dress for work. With help from the center, she is now successful and is living independently.

Continued from Page 12 The Hope Center Houston, is a facility in Houston near I-45 and FM 1960 that supports and helps Houston's homeless community. The Hope Center's goal is to help the homeless population be able to live independently. The facility hopes to transform individuals who have found themselves without a home. "We're in the life-changing business," says Bob Butler, meeting with Girl Scout Troop 14585. While there, he told the girls a story about Raymond, a military veteran who had been homeless for more than 20 years. With mentoring from Hope Center volunteers, he started his own business and is now living entirely independently. Girl Scout Troop 14585 is currently working with the Hope Center to earn their Silver Award as part of their project called "Inspiring Hope." The Silver Award is the second-highest award of the Girl Scouts of the USA and the highest award that a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. The goal of Inspiring Hope is to provide a library for the homeless who visit the center so they can see a world beyond their life on the streets. Fairfield residents currently, freshmen at Bridgeland High School, started this project a year ago. The project was delayed and modified because of COVID shutdowns earlier this year. Nearly finished, the girls have built, stained, finished, and installed two bookshelves. They have also sorted books, personal supplies, and clothes collected for the Hope Center. Earning a silver award requires 50 hours of service. The girls have met their goal and are hoping to inform others about the vital work of Hope Center so others will support the facility. If you want to help out this wonderful organization, you can go to their website to see up-to-date lists of needs. Some of their constant needs are trash bags - kitchen (13 gallons), liner (55-60 gallon), plastic utensils, coffee, women's hygiene products, large latex gloves, and gift cards to stores such as Kroger, Walmart, H-E-B, Sam's, and Office Depot. Right now, they need new or gently used men's jeans sizes 30-36 and women's bras and sports bras. Every contribution helps! The first group of Dodge Durango patrol vehicles have arrived and will be patrolling soon in neighborhoods throughout Precinct 4. Constable Mark Herman also added a new 2021 Chevrolet Camaro to the fleet! These vehicles are equipped with the best safety equipment on the market, computers, in car video, and radar equipment. It is our belief, through knowledge and experience that by putting the best possible police equipment on the streets that we are at a huge advantage over the criminal element. The citizens of Precinct 4 deserve the best and we aim to provide it. Thank you Constable Herman for always ensuring your deputies have the best equipment to protect the community! Follow us at Facebook.com/precinct4 to receive live feeds on crime and arrests in your area.
