Thomas Coffman, one of our local photographers, called me several days after our power outage, which began early Sunday morning, February 14, to discuss placing a sign at Fairfield's HEB entrance to promote pride and keep everyone's spirits up. I got so excited about all the thoughtfulness and caregiving that was spreading throughout our community, I posted a comment on Facebook, along with a photo of Thomas's sign, applauding Fairfield's Good Samaritans and asking for testimonials. We got plenty! Since my personal experience is so close to my heart, I'll start with my own. Then, I'll add as many as space will allow. There are scores more on our neighborhood Facebook page. On Tuesday, midday, when our electricity was restored, I was standing in the middle of Kroger. After checking out, I raced home to put my house in order. About an hour in---I guess that is how long it took to lubricate the pipes---I heard a powerful clanging, vibrating, roaring sound. The culprit was coming from my garage; the sprinkling system was gyrating off the wall. Water gushed out of the drywall onto the garage floor and through the weep holes on the outside. Phones weren't working, so I had to jump in my car and round up my son-in-law, Scott Owen, a few blocks away. On my way back, cruising down my street, I spotted Samaria Gonzalez, my neighbor, and her neighbor Bucee Honeck. They saw I was in distress and immediately headed in my direction. The three of them, Samaria, Bucee, and Scott, figured out where to turn off the water, and the gushing subsided. A few hours later, Samaria called telling me that her husband Tomie had just repaired a burst pipe at their house and thought he could fix mine. Of Course, I was delighted because I had already started calling around and found it would be days before I would see a plumber. Tomie was there in a matter of minutes to assess the problem. The first words out of my mouth were, "Oh, Tomie, look at you. Not only are you here to help out an old lady in distress, but you are also supporting the Women's Club and all the good they do in Fairfield!" Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.

Preening like a peacock, he flashed a beautiful smile, saying, "For sure! We all need to do our part to support one another. Everybody in the family has one of these smart-looking sweatshirts!" I whipped out my "always handy" camera and took a few pics, and the result is the photo you see of Samaria and Tomie on the cover. Tomie then went to work, and in no time, I had running water with very little damage. Just a sampling of the 41 "unedited" comments we received is as follows. Please visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/ FairfieldCypressTX to read them all. Carolyn Gay After all the recent negativity we've witnessed, it was wonderful to see the kind and caring attitudes of our neighbors. We're older, so they checked to see if we needed help covering our faucets. After a pipe burst, they turned off the water at the curb, went up in the attic to turn off our water heater, brought drinking & water for toilets, made trips to the store, and, best of all, offered showers at their houses. We have lived in Fairfield for over 20 years, so our neighbors have become our family. Their help during the days without power and water has sustained us and has confirmed that they are indeed our family. Vanessa We are truly a blessed community. We are on Twisted Leaf drive, Aka Halloween street. We had pipes bust, pool issues, some flooding, etc. I feel so blessed to have my grown boys to help & we had every neighbor offer some type of assistance. We all return the favor in some way. I remember my Granny saying, "what goes around comes around." This is 100% true. Our community is bursting with love & an abundance of helping hands. I thank Jose & Julie Guiterrez of FF. They are known to help many over the years. His wife Julie seen my FB post for supplies needed .... low and behold... I hear a big old diesel truck out front... it was Jose. He stayed and helped my husband. We had running water in no time. We are Keeping thankful-hearted and feeling blessed to live in Fairfield!! Stay warm! Love one another.

Continued from Page 5 Misty VanDusen Our brand new neighbor Ryan (so new that I don't know his last name yet) saved the day. A pipe on our water softener burst, and he happened to come outside while my husband and I were trying to decide what to do. Ryan jumped into action, grabbing the necessary tools and parts from his garage then fixing the pipe on the spot. While we loved the family that left, we're grateful for fantastic neighbors and excited to know Ryan and his wife Ashley as life returns to normal. Ruthanne Bloyd Thank you to everyone for your prayers, calls, and messages. We are feeling so much care and support in the midst of it all. We are also seeing God's blessings and so thankful for our friends, family, and Fairfield community. During the fire, while firefighters were still getting it under control, a fireman walked out holding something in his arms; it was my dad's memorial flag, still in the wooden display case. It had been sitting on the mantle of the fireplace. He went back in and found my mom's also—both in good condition, just a little dirty. We also saw my mom's handwritten family recipe book in the kitchen debris all around it, but no soot, no ash, not a single page singed, just a little damp around the edges. As bad as it is, and it looks like we will have to rebuild, we are thankful for the angels among us and all the blessings we have received. Madeline Buchanan My husband is desperate to get some land eventually...however, I've been here since 4th grade, and now we have our own family to raise here! Honestly, between Harvey and now this recent incident,

he told me the other day, "I guess we aren't gonna be moving away from here anytime soon, huh?" Nope! Jaimie Sultenfuss Having a husband out of town and being here by myself with four young kids, my wonderful neighbor brought us hot meals and checked in on us. Not to mention sending her husband over to help me make sure we didn't have busted pipes. A Kole Kole TEXAS PROUD because WE are Texas. Pretty much a massive disaster-hit Houston, Texas, and surrounding areas AGAIN. Not going to lie; it wasn't easy for a lot of folks. Our infrastructure and government response was not as ready as it should have been. Our power grid had vulnerabilities, along with so many other things that should have been done differently. However, while fake news will make people believe that Texans were helpless....this Texan saw a different narrative. I saw people helping one another; I saw generators, fuel, firewood being deployed by residents - NOT government. I saw people opening homes and businesses as shelters for pets and all. I saw an army of four-wheeldrive vehicles pulling folks out of ditches, delivering meals, etc. Small businesses are opening their shops, stores, activity centers to everyone, including non-residents, for warmth, a quick charge and a meal, showers when possible. I saw patience, generosity, and kindness. I could go on and on. Do you know what I didn't see? Anger, Looting, or Crime. Criticize and laugh all you want, but never doubt the resolve, generosity, and preparedness of the Texas people. We will always overcome.

Make a New Room Without Building One By Jackie Devine

by Brenda Hallada On February 20, with short notice, our neighborhood came together to celebrate the birthday of a WW2 vet (he was a commando in the British Army who served in Burma, India, Ceylon, and Hong Kong). There was a ton of people in family cars, sports cars, motorcycles, police cars, and fire trucks who all came by to wish him a happy birthday and thank him for his service. WWII Veteran Cyril Bell, born February 19, 1921, celebrated his 100th birthday with the help of the Cy-Fair FD and the Fairfield community. Born in England, Bell served in the British Army in the United Kingdom. As we were leaving the parade, we came across a bake sale at the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints put on by another family to help out two elderly sisters whose house burned this past week (the fire started in the attic, and the sisters think the cause was the gas fireplace they were using for heat). When we pulled up to donate, I realized the family looked familiar. It turns out they were the very first family we did a pandemic parade for back in March of 2020. They had recently moved to the neighborhood, and the dad wanted to do something special for his seven-year old daughter. He told her they were going to check the mail, so she put on her fancy princess dress and did her hair — and it was a complete surprise. She was so cute! After that initial parade, our neighborhood ended up having multiple parades every week for several months. For us, today’s parade for Cyril was the 22nd one that we participated in with our 1999 “Hot Wheels” Miata.”

Are you looking for a quick and costeffective way to add a man-cave to your home? Maybe you've been thinking it’s time to turn your garage into a showroom for your classic cars? Or perhaps you have been thinking of updating your patio. Then Sean McCord with Spartan Concrete Coatings is the guy you want to call. SCC is a local, family-owned business specializing in installing high-end polymer floor coatings, resulting in a cost-effective, durable and attractive way to improve your garage or patio's livability and appearance. You’ll also find his work in commercial applications such as offices, laboratories, automotive facilities, laundromats, and warehouses. "Our industrial-grade finishes," explained Sean, "are environmentally friendly, tough, and durable enough to last for years without discoloring, lifting, or peeling. Plus, our finishes resist chemicals and tough stains, making clean up easy and simple." "That sounds intriguing, but I need more information," I said. "How do you apply the surface, how long does it take, and how much does it cost?" Sean jumped at the chance to explain his process. "First, we prepare the floor by diamond grinding the entire surface. Then we clean, patch and repair visible chips, cracks, and expansion joints. After that, we apply a coating consisting of a thick primer epoxy base coat. Next, we broadcast 1/4-inch flakes (available in a variety of colors) to refusal. Meaning we throw flakes until the epoxy won’t take anymore. Lastly, we seal the floor with a UV stable glossy polyurethane (standard price) or polyaspartic (would be an upgrade). "Installation takes one to two days. After that, the floor is ready for foot traffic in as little as eight hours and ready for vehicles in 24 hours. Any two-car garage (up to 400 square feet) runs around $1395.00." In preparation for a summer of parties and entertainment, I suggest you give Sean a call to get your garage or patio restoration started. Kid Entrepreneurs Get Help From Andrew and Amanda

Martial Arts Bring Out The Best In Kids

By Janet Gutherie

Written by Master Rinker

There are kids that grow up ready to take on the world. They have the attitude, the skills and can spot opportunities that are right for them. They are excited about life, they are prepared and know they will handle whatever life throws their way. More than ever, successful kids are exposed to ideas normally associated with entrepreneurship. To be a successful entrepreneur requires creativity, empathy, communication skills, problem-solving ability, practical mathematics and a knack for spotting something at the right moment and having the confidence to act. Raising a child with an awareness of entrepreneurship and the associated skills can change their life for the better even if they don’t go on to start or scale a business. At the very least, the same set of skills will steer them towards opportunities that are right for them. Fairfield siblings Andrew and Amanda Nichols are kid entrepreneurs, just like the ones Daniel described above. They have been running their own businesses since they were both 11 years old. One of their priorities is to inspire other youth entrepreneurs with strategies and practical tools to turn their passions into generating income. Thanks to International Business Global Radio (ibgr.network), Andrew and Amanda have a weekly radio show Saturdays at 1 pm called Z Gen Entrepreneurship. Their listeners (called Baby Sharks) can tune in for an hour each week to learn about topics such as Passion to Product, The Money Factors, Work/School Balance, Marketing and Credibility, and much more. So go to ibgr.network or anywhere you access your podcast and search for Z Gen Entrepeunership to access past and upcoming radio shows. You can also follow and order from their local businesses! n February 27th, the Junior Olympics Team at Rinker’s Black Belt Academy learned a lesson in Teamwork and Leadership. These young men have spent months preparing to compete virtually in the Winter Nationals, but as they began taking part in events, it became clear that it was going to be a frustrating and difficult day due to the virtual aspect of the competition and other complications. The entry forms the boys had prepared were incomplete. With 30 minutes left until the competition, they realized Francisco and Seth would need to forfeit their matches because they did not know an approved Form. Angel would be able to compete as he knew an approved Form, Pow-En. All of the boys were understandably shocked and upset, but they demonstrated immense SELF-CONTROL by keeping their emotions in check. Out of RESPECT for the event and the other competitors, Francisco and Seth decided they needed to show INTEGRITY by still attending the event and forfeiting in-person/virtually. That is when things got interesting. Knowing a Form they could compete with, Angel showed COURTESY to his teammates and began teaching them Pow-En. It’s worth noting that Forms take months to learn, but all of us adults encouraged and cheered them on. These young men showed PERSEVERANCE, learning Pow-En well enough to enter the ring confident in the fact that they were making the best out of a confusing day of competition. What we had the blessing of witnessing was an amazing example of the true meaning of Taekwondo. And for the last Tenent, VICTORY? The boys all placed, winning medals, with their performances of Pow-En! We are incredibly proud of the efforts they put in, and truth be told, the missteps and mistakes they experienced allowed them to prove to themselves and all of us that they truly are Champions. In April, RBBA will be celebrating its 20th anniversary as a Fairfield Owned Business. Mike Rinker is the sole owner and instructor at this school and has trained well over 1,000 men and women to be leaders in our community. Past and current students include doctors, firefighters, FBI agents, police officers, and NASA employees. Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.

By Jackie Devine Heartworm disease—a severe, life-threatening illness that is easily preventable but difficult and costly to cure—results in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets, mainly dogs, cats, and ferrets. It is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis. Mature heartworms look like spaghetti and are found in the heart's pulmonary arteries and the right ventricle. There's no other way for dogs to get heartworms other than through the bite of an infected mosquito. And there's no way to tell if a mosquito is infected. That's why prevention is so important. According to The American Heartworm Society (AHS), heartworm can be found in ALL 50 STATES. However, Texas leads the country in having the highest heartworm-positive dog population. A major factor is our hot and humid climate. According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council, 22 percent of all heartworm cases in Texas are in Harris County, and one in 27 dogs in Harris County will contract the disease. In case you didn't know: • The mosquito is the only known vector for transmitting Heartworm, and more than 70 species of mosquitoes are capable of transmitting Heartworm. • 100% of dogs exposed to heartworm larvae become infected; in cats, this number drops to 61% to 90%. Heartworms affect cats differently than dogs, but the condition is equally as serious. • Dogs can harbor several hundred adult worms in their bodies. However, cats affected by the disease often have few, if any, adult worms (although the immature worms still cause significant damage because of

a condition called Heartworm associated respiratory disease, or HARD). • Approximately 25% of cats infected with heartworms were solely indoor cats. • Although there is no effective treatment to kill heartworms in cats, dogs recover from heartworm disease with appropriate treatment; however, heartworms cause severe illness and sometimes permanent damage. • Prevention is the only way to protect cats from heartworms. Medication used to treat heartworm infection in dogs cannot be used in cats. • Animals will usually test positive for heartworm disease approximately 6-8 months after being bitten by an infected mosquito. • Dogs should be tested annually for Heartworm, and cats should be tested before being put on preventive medication. Both cats and dogs should be on regular heartworm preventative medication. • Prevention is far more effective and less costly than treatment. Treatment can cost up to 15X more than a year's worth of heartworm preventative medicine. Heartworm's advanced symptoms include difficulty breathing, coughing, tiring quickly, listlessness, weight loss, and fainting. If you think your pet may have heartworms, take him or her to your local veterinarian as soon as possible. School News

Submitted by Allyson Akins, VP of Volunteers, Ault Elementary PTO

After the freeze, the Ault Butterfly Garden, like most of our yards, could best be described as "crunchy." Despite our efforts to cover and protect as much as we could, the garden suffered a lot of damage. Ault community volunteers came to the rescue! It is amazing what 30+ volunteers accomplished in six hours at our "Big Help" event on March 5th and 6th. Dead branches were cut down and removed, weeds were pulled throughout the garden, eight bags of soil and 48 bags of mulch were spread, and new flowers and seeds were planted. Volunteers ranged from our youngest students and future All-Stars and their parents to a former student, now in high school, who came back to volunteer because she remembered helping build the garden when she was in first grade. The difference in the garden between now and two months ago is striking. But every challenge is also an opportunity, and we appreciate all the volunteers who stepped up to help rebuild the garden. With a little luck, it should fill in and look beautiful this spring. Visitors welcome!

By Jackie Devine Many of our local businesses are big on giving back. But, a top contender has to be Andy’s Kitchen. He was a Top Sponsor in the 4th Quarter 2020 for Dine Out For Charity and recently, at the suggestion of Cindy Boutwell of Boutwell Properties, installed a claw machine with the proceeds going to Cy-Fair Helping Hands! Not only that, but Andy plans to match the total amount quarterly! Andy and Cindy, thank you for your continuous support of CFHH.

A dual-citizen (United Kingdom and United States) with a Nigerian last name, Odus Evbagharu has been a Houston-native since he was ten years old, growing up in the suburb of Cypress. Always politically aware, thanks to his dad, Odus was enamored with politics in 2008 when a big-eared, half-Kenyan man who looked like him, spoke about change, hope and achieving the impossible. Ever since, he's been hooked. Odus currently serves as Texas State Representative Jon Rosenthal's Chief of Staff for the very House District he grew up in. When he's not in the capitol building, Odus is an active member

of the Texas Freedom Network Board of Directors, an organization that has been on the frontlines for decades fighting for progressive change and sits on the Planned Parenthood Young Leaders Steering Committee, ensuring vital healthcare is accessible to everyone. He's a sports fanatic, political junkie and podcast enthusiast. Go Coogs! All are welcome to attend and to join this growing club, which meets on the third Tuesday of every month.
