News For The Residents at Lakes of Fairhaven

The “BEAR” Necessities Submitted by Ernest Behrens

Imagine leaving your current living situation with nothing but the clothes on your back! This is the unfortunate reality for thousands of children placed in the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) care each year within Harris County. This is also where BEAR…BE A Resource for CPS Kids, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that provides hope and help for abused and neglected children and the caseworkers who protect them within Harris County, steps in. BEAR has been providing basic needs and supportive services to these children for more than 20 years. In March, Abigail Behrens, Cypress native and current sophomore at Cy-Woods High School, completed her 4th service project benefiting BEAR. Abigail’s journey began seven years ago with Education in Action’s Lone Star Leadership Academy, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people to become informed and active leaders in their communities. All active members of the LSLA Alumni Council must create and lead a service project each year. Having a soft spot in her heart for children, Abigail felt that BEAR’s honorable mission was a perfect match to dedicate her time and resources to. Abigail’s three previous service projects have provided 50 backpacks full of supplies, 145 BEAR necessity packs, and 246 toys. This year brought its own unique set of challenges with the pandemic, social distancing protocols, and her home church merging into another church which hindered her typical avenue of asking for donations. The solutions…GOFUNDME and SOCIAL MEDIA! She established a GoFundMe page and used social media, phone calls, and emails to expand her support network to raise funds needed to purchase supplies to provide BEAR Necessity Packs once again. Each pack includes shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothbrush, and toothpaste with an addition of a face mask for this year. After raising more than $1,300.00, Abigail was able to purchase enough supplies to provide 254 BEAR necessity packs. With the help of her friends and family, Eleanor Behrens, Isabel Prejean, Aiza Khalid, and Ariel Canton, they were able to pack all 254 packs in about 30 minutes. Job well done, ladies, and thank you to everyone in and around the Fairfield community for supporting this young lady and the mission of BEAR. Look for her next service project in the coming year!
