4 Fairfield Community Gazette - May 2021

by Jackie Devine Happy May, everyone. What a wonderful time of year in Fairfield. You'll find scores of folks out walking on trails around the lakes and through our neighborhoods. With Daylight Savings Time, we've been given extra sunlight for families and their little ones who seem to relish it the most. They enjoy watching the ducks and turtles float along on our lakes as they are entertained by birds with sharp beaks and long legs pirouetting at the water's edge. Squirrels scamper across their path and blooming flowers sway in the breeze. Who can't use a heavy dose of heaven on earth as unsettling news continues across the airways? Speaking of news, you are the reason the Gazette continues to bring coverage of the good deeds and selfless acts taking place in and around Fairfield. The May edition is no exception. As you have noticed, graduation signs are sprouting up in front yards. Students, teachers, staff, and parents have already started celebrating the class of 2021. This month the Gazette has the honor of introducing 25 of those ambitious, hard-working graduates to you. Our May cover has a special significance. It shows Sydni Strong looking back on her previous accomplishments but moving forward toward the next phase of her life. It embodies all the critical elements required to embark on a safe journey ahead: mentally, physically, academically, and spiritually. Our graduates are blazing a trail toward the future; let's take this time to honor, appreciate and wish them Godspeed. Additionally, we are introducing two new columns this month; the first is Joyce Behind The Mic, who will keep you up to date on Cypress's latest LIVE music happenings! The other is Senior Travels and More by JoAnn Lambert that focuses on senior health, longevity, and productivity by staying engaged in life. Monthly, you'll find numerous opportunities for seniors (50+) to connect, travel together. As you begin to congregate around the pools and take advantage of the wonderful fare offered by our local pubs and restaurants, let's give thanks that we live in Fairfield. Once more, Congratulations to the class of 2021; happy summer, and as always, thank you for reading the Fairfield Community Gazette. Please contact me for questions, concerns, if for some reason your graduate isn't listed, or if you have a story we need to publish in the Gazette at jackiedevine@peelinc.com.

The “BEAR” Necessities

Submitted by Ernest Behrens

Imagine leaving your current living situation with nothing but the clothes on your back! This is the unfortunate reality for thousands of children placed in the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) care each year within Harris County. This is also where BEAR…BE A Resource for CPS Kids, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that provides hope and help for abused and neglected children and the caseworkers who protect them within Harris County, steps in. BEAR has been providing basic needs and supportive services to these children for more than 20 years. In March, Abigail Behrens, Cypress native and current sophomore at Cy-Woods High School, completed her 4th service project benefiting BEAR. Abigail’s journey began seven years ago with Education in Action’s Lone Star Leadership Academy, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people to become informed and active leaders in their communities. All active members of the LSLA Alumni Council must create and lead a service project each year. Having a soft spot in her heart for children, Abigail felt that BEAR’s honorable mission was a perfect match to dedicate her time and resources to. Abigail’s three previous service projects have provided 50 backpacks full of supplies, 145 BEAR necessity packs, and 246 toys. This year brought its own unique set of challenges with the pandemic, social distancing protocols, and her home church merging into another church which hindered her typical avenue of asking for donations. The solutions…GOFUNDME and SOCIAL MEDIA! She established a GoFundMe page and used social media, phone calls, and emails to expand her support network to raise funds needed to purchase supplies to provide BEAR Necessity Packs once again. Each pack includes shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothbrush, and toothpaste with an addition of a face mask for this year. After raising more than $1,300.00, Abigail was able to purchase enough supplies to provide 254 BEAR necessity packs. With the help of her friends and family, Eleanor Behrens, Isabel Prejean, Aiza Khalid, and Ariel Canton, they were able to pack all 254 packs in about 30 minutes. Job well done, ladies, and thank you to everyone in and around the Fairfield community for supporting this young lady and the mission of BEAR. Look for her next service project in the coming year! For more information on BEAR, visit the BEAR https://bearesourcehouston.org/.

Bridgleand Finished First Bridgeland finished first at the district tournament with five region qualifiers: -Jasmine Do -Christa Woodard -Makenzie Brown -Riley Darnell -Trinity Snow Photo by Matthew McCaig

Stephanie Jurica, the owner of Sign Gypsies Cypress, saw a need when Storm Uri slammed our area with snow. She immediately launched a #loveyourneighbor campaign to help at least one family in the community who was affected by the snow. In less than 24 hours, she had already collected $120. Her goal was to raise $1000 by March 18. With an outpouring of support from the Cypress community, both local and national, she raised a total of $2000. Amazingly, SGC had two winners!!! They each received $1000.00, and they both happened to be CYFAIR ISD employees! Kelly Brockelman and Laura Hernandez were the chosen winners! As a small business owner, Stephanie felt blessed by the support of the community. It was her pleasure to be able to give back!

The finalists were chosen based on six criteria: • actions of the football team; • actions of the coaches; • actions of the support groups at games, including parents, band and other auxiliary groups; • respect of the American flag; • a score based on the number of personal fouls incurred during games; and • a score based on the number of unsportsmanlike conduct fouls.

Track and Field Championships Bridgeland sweeps District 16-6A track and field team championships CFISD boys’ and girls’ track and field athletes qualified for the area track and field meet after placing in the top four of their respective events at the District 16-6A Championships held March 31 and April 1 at Bridgeland High School. The host Bears also made history, as the Bridgeland boys’ and girls’ track teams earned their first titles. In the girls’ competition, Bridgeland pulled away from runner-up Cypress Ranch High School. The Bears totaled 154.5 points to claim the team championship. Cypress Ranch finished second with 144 points and Cypress Woods High School finished third with 126 points. “I'm really proud of the ladies for earning their first district championship,” said Tom Kennedy, Bridgeland head girls’ track and field coach. “It was a tight battle between Cypress Ranch, Cypress Woods and us, and they fought for every point down the stretch. All in all, 11 girls qualified for area with a total of 16 entries in 11 of the 17 events. I'm impressed by the range of the group as a whole and feel like they've set the standard for Bridgeland girls’ track and field moving forward. I'm excited to see how they perform at the area meet and expect many to advance to region.” Bridgeland was also the highest-finishing school on the boys’ side, with the Bears totaling 128 points to claim the team championship. They finished ahead of runner-up Cypress Park High School, which finished with 110 points, and third-place Cypress Ranch (99 points). “Our boys performed well overall with points being scored in almost every event, which is a huge testament to their commitment to team success,” said Mauricio Vazquez, Bridgeland head boys’ track and field coach. “During our preseason meeting, our boys set our primary goal as winning a team district championship, not just for themselves but for the 2020 team that didn’t get the opportunity to contend due to the canceled season. This program has been built around serving each other, and it was a special moment watching them achieve their goal. We have very strong distance and pole vault squads that are the heartbeat of this team; however, the points scored by our young group of sprinters, relays, jumpers and throwers showed that we are headed in the right direction as a program.” Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.

The Traveling Seniors of Cypress rode the rails, on March 17, on the Texas State Railroad, a historic 25-mile heritage railroad between Rusk and Palestine, Texas. TSR, built by inmates, was founded in 1883 by Texas to haul raw materials for a smelter at the prison in Rusk. Regular service on the line was ended in 1921. The state leased the line to private companies until 1969, then turned it over to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1972. In 2007, the railroad was transferred to the Texas State Railroad Authority and is now privately operating as a scenic tourist line. You can view a video of this trip at https://vimeo.com/manage/ videos/526732305. On April 7, the Classic Adults of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church and The Traveling Seniors of Cypress ventured to Chappell Hill together. Fifty-two seniors bought tasty treats at Chappell Hill Bakery, then they were off to the Chappell Hill Historical Society Museum. Pickleball for Active Adults 55+ at Good Shepherd Submitted by Wayne Miller

Good Shepherd United Methodist Church now has pickleball for active adults 55+ as part of their Classic Adults Ministry. Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the USA! A combination of ping pong, badminton, and tennis. It is an addictive activity well-suited for active adults from beginner to experienced players. You can play whether you are athletic or not! Pickleball is a low-impact sport but provides plenty of healthy movement. Nets and balls are furnished. There is no cost other than providing your own paddle. However, they have a few “starter” paddles available for beginners to use until they are comfortable with the game. Join your friends and neighbors in the gym every Monday and Friday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. You are welcome to play once a week or both days; it’s your choice. Courts are lined off in the GSUMC gym, so the game can be played year-round in any weather! Would you like to know more about Pickleball or how it is played? Go to YouTube.com & search “pickleball for seniors” and find more videos. Voila! You’re hooked. Good Shepherd is located in Fairfield at 20155 Cypresswood Dr. The gym is located in the NE corner of the campus, and you may enter through the double doors.
