Travels and More For Seniors In Cypress Submitted by JoAnn Lambert The Traveling Seniors of Cypress rode the rails, on March 17, on the Texas State Railroad, a historic 25-mile heritage railroad between Rusk and Palestine, Texas. TSR, built by inmates, was founded in 1883 by Texas to haul raw materials for a smelter at the prison in Rusk. Regular service on the line was ended in 1921. The state leased the line to private companies until 1969, then turned it over to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1972. In 2007, the railroad was transferred to the Texas State Railroad Authority and is now privately operating as a scenic tourist line. You can view a video of this trip at https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/526732305. On April 7, the Classic Adults of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church and The Traveling Seniors of Cypress ventured to Chappell Hill together. Fifty-two seniors bought tasty treats at Chappell Hill Bakery, then they were off to the Chappell Hill Historical Society Museum. The group enjoyed lunch at Lone Star Southern Grill, explored the Burton Farmers Cotton Gin, treated themselves to ice cream at Bluebell Creamery, then had their pictures taken amongst the bluebonnets, The Traveling Seniors of Cypress is a group of people aged 50 and older, mainly from Cypress (but you don't have to reside in Cypress to travel with them) who take day trips and extended excursions together. The “BEAR” Necessities

Submitted by Ernest Behrens

Imagine leaving your current living situation with nothing but the clothes on your back! This is the unfortunate reality for thousands of children placed in the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) care each year within Harris County. This is also where BEAR…BE A Resource for CPS Kids, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that provides hope and help for abused and neglected children and the caseworkers who protect them within Harris County, steps in. BEAR has been providing basic needs and supportive services to these children for more than 20 years. In March, Abigail Behrens, Cypress native and current sophomore at Cy-Woods High School, completed her 4th service project benefiting BEAR. Abigail’s journey began seven years ago with Education in Action’s Lone Star Leadership Academy, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people to become informed and active leaders in their communities. All active members of the LSLA Alumni Council must create and lead a service project each year. Having a soft spot in her heart for children, Abigail felt that BEAR’s honorable mission was a perfect match to dedicate her time and resources to. Abigail’s three previous service projects have provided 50 backpacks full of supplies, 145 BEAR necessity packs, and 246 toys. This year brought its own unique set of challenges with the pandemic, social distancing protocols, and her home church merging into another church which hindered her typical avenue of asking for donations. The solutions…GOFUNDME and SOCIAL MEDIA! She established a GoFundMe page and used social media, phone calls, and emails to expand her support network to raise funds needed to purchase supplies to provide BEAR Necessity Packs once again. Each pack includes shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothbrush, and toothpaste with an addition of a face mask for this year. After raising more than $1,300.00, Abigail was able to purchase enough supplies to provide 254 BEAR necessity packs. With the help of her friends and family, Eleanor Behrens, Isabel Prejean, Aiza Khalid, and Ariel Canton, they were able to pack all 254 packs in about 30 minutes. Job well done, ladies, and thank you to everyone in and around the Fairfield community for supporting this young lady and the mission of BEAR. Look for her next service project in the coming year! LOEN Ladies Club activities have been limited for over a year. With many of our members having received vaccinations the club may be able to resume more activities later this year. We are anxious to get back to providing our members and all of the women of the Lakes on Eldridge North community with opportunities to socialize through our monthly club events and activities. Until that time, only three of our groups will continue to meet virtually: Bridge, Daytime Book Club, and Book Club. If you would like more information about the Ladies Club, please email Jeanne MacKenzie at loenladiesclubpresident@gmail.com.

Cy Ridge HS German teacher honored for virtual library Cypress Ridge High School German Teacher Bettina Albermann was recognized in February by the Goethe-Institute, Germany’s governmental culture organization that promotes the study of Germany and the use of the German language across the world. Albermann, who created a virtual library highlighting notable Afro-Germans for her students, saw one of her digital books highlighted in the institute’s bi-monthly class material available to teachers. The idea started as Albermann simply wanting to better prepare herself for remote teaching and nontraditional forms of instruction going into the 2020-2021 school year. She took classes over the summer, including one on Book Creator, an online application that helps educators create, read and share eBooks. Then came a discussion on a Facebook group tied to the American Association for Teachers of German. “It came up that we didn’t really have a lot of literature representing minorities in Germany,” Albermann said. “So that’s when I thought that maybe I could do something.” Albermann’s book subjects are Afro-German politicians, athletes, musicians and other notable figures. In addition to researching the material and writing the biographies, Albermann also narrates each one in German for her students to follow along. Her virtual library grew to 18 books and is available through her teaching homepage. “I wanted to have more comprehensive material for the students so that’s why I started writing the books,” said Albermann, who was born and raised in Germany. After sharing her work with other German teachers, word spread through social media. In February, someone in the Facebook group recommended Albermann’s library to the Goethe-Institute. The virtual book selected was on Aminata Touré, a German politician first elected at 25 years old and currently serving as vice president of Landtag, a representative assembly for the states of Germany. Touré’s parents fled to Germany from Mali in 1991 and she wasn’t granted German citizenship until she was 12 years old despite being born in the country. The institute put together a learning worksheet based on Touré and Albermann’s book and includes a link to her library. “All of these people have overcome some sort of challenge, so it’s more about inspiring my students. That was my intention—how can this help you overcome your difficulties when you see that other people can do it too?” Albermann said. “Our comprehensive input readers may not talk about them, but I wanted to make sure the students had some other information where they could learn about the real Germany, which is quite multicultural,” Cy Ridge German honors 1: Cypress Ridge High School German Teacher Bettina Albermann was honored by the Goethe-Institute after creating a virtual library highlighting notable Afro-Germans for her students.
