OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE SUMMERWOOD COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION, INC.
Why Join a Committee
HARRIS COUNTY PRECINCT 3 CONSTABLES OFFICE Precinct 3 Constables Office continues to partner with Summerwood on the safety and security of the community. Sign up for the RUOK (Are You OK? Senior Program) by calling 713-274-2500 and speaking with an RUOK Coordinator. Why Apply? Applicants will receive a friendly and comforting call at least once a week by a trusted volunteer from the HCCO Precinct 3. Additional calls can be made upon request. Every welfare check, whether by phone or personally by a HCCO Precinct 3 Deputy, gives peace of mind, not only to applicants, but to family members and friends living near or far. Seniors can easily fall victim to crimes such as scams and frauds that can be prevented if detected in advance by one of the HCCO Precinct 3 volunteers or officers. HCCO Precinct 3 will do their very best to act as a liaison if a senior express needs that the department cannot fulfill. Seniors are always encouraged during every welfare call to contact HCCO Precinct 3 if they have a need or concern. Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.
We are always looking for Summerwood residents to volunteer and join a committee within our community. Committees serve a number of important roles to our association process. The success of our association depends upon getting our members involved in the various committees that the Board of Directors depends upon for support and guidance. Volunteering to serve on one of the associations committees is a great way to become involved and contribute to our community. An attractive feature of living in a homeowner’s association is that it helps to build a sense of community and assists in waring off an atmosphere of apathy. The Board of Directors is looking for homeowners who are interested in volunteering to serve on an Association committee. Contact our Association Manager Michelle (Michelle@crest-management.com) for more information. • Committees are a great place to serve the community and lend your expertise such as has happened with the PR/ Marketing committee. • Committees serve as a conduit through which the Board receives opinions and feedback from homeowners. • Committee input is leveraged as a vehicle through which Board actions are explained. • Committees enhance the effectiveness of the Board of Directors by providing research analysis and advice needed for policy decisions. • Committees are an instrument for initial implementation of Board policies. Committees are an important linkage between the Board of Directors and homeowners, but in order to be effective, committees need members. Homeowner input, involvement and participation is a must. Please consider participating in the association process and volunteering to serve on a committee. Our community needs you. Summerwood Life - May 2021

THE HOUSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT WANTS YOU TO BE AWARE OF THE DANGERS OF CARBON MONOXIDE. Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that can kill you before you are even aware it is in your house. CO causes side effects such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, disorientation and fatigue that are often mistaken for the flu. These effects can vary greatly from person to person depending on age, overall health and length of exposure. According to statistics, CO kills hundreds and injures thousands of people each year. • CO is produced during the incomplete combustion of fuels such as kerosene, natural gas, oil, gasoline, coal & even wood. • The gas may originate from your furnace, fireplace, stove, hot water heater, barbeque grill or automobile. • The danger increases more during the winter months as heaters are used more frequently and fresh air ventilation is minimized by closed windows. • Warming up automobiles in an attached garage, even with the garage door open, can allow concentrated amounts of CO to enter your house through nearby windows or carport door. • When inhaled, carbon monoxide is absorbed into the bloodstream 200 times as fast as oxygen. • Purchase a Carbon Monoxide detector if you use gas or a fireplace for your heating. Have your furnace professionally inspected every year and check for CO emissions. • Install a Carbon Monoxide detector in the hallway near every separatee sleeping area of the home. • When your CO alarm sounds, ventilate the house with fresh air by opening windows and doors. • Check your CO detector by every month pressing the test button and replace the detector every 5 years. We All Contribute To Community Safety Because we live within a community association, the potential to solve the kinds of problems that plague individual homeowners is very good. Take community safety for instance. An individual homeowner can help deter a burglary by installing an alarm which will notify the authorities after the break-in has occurred. We are fortunate in Summerwood to have Precinct 3 Constable deputies in our community, but they need your assistance. The Constables have a program, “See Something, Say Something”, that encourages homeowners to report potential crimes by calling 281-427-4791 or leveraging this website https://constable3. harriscountytx.gov/Pages/default.aspx. As residents of a community association, we are given the opportunity to communicate with our neighbors (this newsletter is a good example), using our block watch program, and benfit from community guidelines found in our CCR’s. In addition to the above, we can keep our community safe and help eliminate vandalism, burglary and other community-based crime with participation by all of the members of our community. If we all kept an eye out on our neighbors house while they are away, reported suspicious activity and/or persons, and complied with our rules & regulations, then we could help deter the causes of neighborhood crime. Keep focusing on how we can leverage our association to help improve the quality of our lives. Let's start focusing on the positives...and working together to preserve community safety.

SummerCreek – All-State Send Off SCHS Fine Arts Represent at State Sofia Plata, a member of the Summer Creek High School Choir has earned the prestigious honor of being named a Texas All-State Musician. Despite the innumerable challenges encountered throughout this school year, 2021 All-Staters remained committed to their personal musical development. They demonstrated the very perseverance and dedication that ongoing participation in a music program fosters. Sofia was chosen for this impressive honor through a competitive process that began last fall and included District, Region, and Area levels. Sofia sings Alto 1 in the Summer Creek High School Chorale and Colla Voce Choirs under the direction of Amanda Robison, a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, a 19,000+ member organization headquartered in Austin. This is Sofia’s first time to perform as a member of a TMEA All-State organization. Sofia is the child of Rafael and Alma Plata. (Sofia also studies privately with Erin Thompson). TMEA sponsors the Texas All-State audition process to promote students’ dedication to their musical knowledge and skill and to encourage educators to support their students in this development. All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. Over 50,000 students from around the state initially entered the audition process, and 1,860 students have been selected for 2021. This competitive process begins throughout the state in auditions hosted by 33 TMEA Regions. Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. From this ranking, a select group of musicians advances from their Region to compete against musicians from other areas in eight TMEA Area competitions. The highest-ranking musicians judged at the TMEA Area competitions qualify to a TMEA All-State music group. In addition, 3 Summer Creek High School students recently qualified for STATE at VASE (Visual Art Scholastic Event) with their Art pieces. Those students are Isabella Lozano (11), Angelique Padura (10), and Cameron Soileau (10).
