Letter from Chair Dear Neighbors, It’s officially summer this month and we’ve been feeling it a bit, huh? We are continuing to meet monthly as an association in Zoom, and we hope you are finding the recorded sessions (which can be found on our Facebook page) helpful and motivating. We look forward to getting out and visiting with neighbors and our local businesses more as the summer progresses. We will see you around. Stay connected, stay safe, I wish you well. Mueller Neighbors Facebook Page
By the Mueller Neighborhood Association Steering Committee Thanks to Bart Jacob for sharing his amazing drone photographs with us, and we look forward to many more. This month’s shot is a reminder to check out the trailers over next to the Browning Hangar, just off Airport Blvd. Currently, neighbors can find Soto & Co, who make custom suits and accessories (sotoandco.com). The Stone House Wood Fired Grill is great for burgers, sandwiches, and pita wraps (thestonehousewoodfiregrill.com). Lah Lee Nea is Honduraninspired fare (lahleenea.com). Pick up a cup o’Joe at Streamway Coffee (facebook.com/compasscoldbrew.brew). If you’re feeling tacos or a smoothie, pick up Veracruz All Natural (veracruzallnatural.com). Feeling vegan? Check out Conscious Cravings (consciouscravingsaustin. com) for wraps, salads, and smoothies!

Effective July 2021, the Mueller Neighborhood Association (MNA) will take on administration of the Mueller Neighbors Facebook page at facebook.com/groups/muellerneighbors. Currently, the Mueller Neighbors page is administered by a few amazing neighbors. We are grateful to them for their effort, time, and experience over the years. After surveying the page’s current members and meeting with all past and present MNA chairs, it was suggested that the MNA should take over the administration of the page and create an MNA committee that would establish guidelines and roles for administering the Facebook page. This transition will allow the page to continue to exist, provide a larger pool of roles to manage the page, establish new and comprehensive guidelines and practices to be put into place, and create a streamlined process for review, administration, and accountability of the page. Further details and the opportunity to sign up for roles to administer the page will be forthcoming. If you are interested, please make sure you are a current member of the Mueller Neighborhood Association and that you are familiar with how we currently operate by attending our general meetings or reviewing the recordings. Chair, MNA Engagement and Inclusion Committee On Sept. 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which became effective January 1, 1863; however, the proclamation had little effect in the state of Texas until over two years later. On June 19, 1865, Gen. Gordon Granger (bit.ly/gengranger) read General Order No. 3 to the people of Galveston that informed them that, in accordance with the proclamation, all slaves were to be freed. The reading of the order did not provide freedom to Black people in Texas. And while many work to bring the liberation of Black people to the forefront, Juneteenth (aka Freedom, Jubilee, Emancipation, or Liberation Day) is a yearly celebration that uplifts and amplifies the art, food, music, fashion, history and contributions that Black people continue to provide to this nation. The evolution of this holiday is anchored in Texas, but has grown significantly since 1865. On a yearly basis in 47 states, the District of Columbia, hundreds of cities, and even parts of Mexico, Black communities come together to celebrate Juneteenth. In 1979, Texas was the first state to pass Juneteenth as a state holiday, and there is a national movement to create Juneteenth as a national holiday. On Saturday, June 19th, the 31st celebration for Juneteenth in Travis County will take place at various churches, parks, backyards, and homes throughout Austin. If you're interested in learning more about Juneteenth or how you can celebrate, I highly recommend... 1. Learn the history of our neighborhood and understand the impact to East Austin and the Black community. 2. Learn about the Poor People's Campaign and the significance it has contributed to the survival of Black people. 3. Work with the Mueller Housing Engagement Team so we can get more Black people into home ownership and attempt to close the racial wealth gap in our neighborhood. 4. Support Black-owned businesses. 5. Learn and read the Black National Anthem to your children. I highly recommend “Lift Ev’ry Voice” by Beyonce. Please contact Koreena Malone at koreena@cpaksm.com or steering@muellerneighborhood.org if you would like to join the Mueller Neighborhood Community Engagement and Inclusion Committee.
Save the Date: 4th of July
By Taylor Youngblood, Chair of the Mueller Neighborhood Association Save the date for Sunday, July 4, 2021 for Mueller’s Annual 4th of July Event. As of the deadline for this publication, Austin was in Stage 3 for COVID-19. Therefore, the MNA is planning to host a socially distanced 4th of July celebration. We anticipate featuring a vehicle parade, like last year, and are still working on more fun ideas. Make sure to check our website and/or follow us on Facebook and/or Instagram for the lastest. FRONT PORCH FLYER Join the Mueller Neighborhood Association (MNA)
The MNA is an all-volunteer, non-profit, non-partisan organization that advocates for the Mueller neighborhood and focuses on building community. Playing a vital role in representing the interests of the neighborhood, the MNA strives for diversity and inclusion of all members of our community, residents, and visitors alike. Being a member is a good way to learn about what is happening in our community. Becoming involved is a wonderful way to meet your neighbors. The MNA website (muellerneighborhood.org) is an excellent tool to learn about our neighborhood and how to connect with your neighbors. The website answers many questions – MNA vs POA, tips for new neighbors, membership and contact information, FAQs about pools, parks, parking, landscaping, and more. There are many opportunities to become involved with the neighborhood. Check the MNA website for descriptions of committees and their roles such as Block Captains, Neighborhood Engagement & Inclusion, Transportation & Urban Planning, Housing, Front Porch Flyer, Online Communication & Technology, Community Space Initiative, Schools, Local Business, and Aging & Neighborhood. The activities of the committees are many and varied. For example, the Transportation and Urban Planning committee keeps the neighborhood informed about building and road projects in Austin. The Neighborhood Engagement & Inclusion committee’s Equity Team has started a book club. The Climate Change committee and the Zero Waste leader help keep us updated with recycling and environmental issues. Several committees draft positional letters to formal leadership like Austin City Council and our state leaders. Social activities include Fall Fest, Egg Scramble, and Fourth of July parade. Annual dues are $5 per resident, 18 years or older. Your dues help pay for neighborhood events, operating costs, MNA grants, and Front Door Flyer newsletter. To join or renew your MNA membership, please complete the membership form at muellerneighborhood.org. You may also join by completing the form below and give it to your Block Captain, bring it to an MNA meeting, or mail it to: MNA, PO Box 49123 Austin, TX 78765. Remit checks to “Mueller Neighborhood Association.”

Immature leaffooted bugs.
Adult leaffooted bug.
Leaffooted bug adults may be mistaken for stink bugs while the immatures may get confused with assassin bug nymphs. Leaffooted bugs are larger than stink bugs and have an elongated body. Often, leaffooted bugs have an expanded region on their hind leg that looks similar to a leaf, hence the name leaffooted bug. Adults are fairly large and grayish-brown. Immatures, or nymphs, look similar to adults, but are often reddish-orange in color and do not have fully developed wings. Leaffooted bugs feed on a variety of fruits, nuts and seeds, such as tomatoes, peppers, pecans or sunflower seeds. They have piercing-sucking mouthparts with which they puncture fruit to suck out juices. The opening left behind after the mouthpart is withdrawn can allow access to secondary invaders like bacteria or fungus. Leaffooted bugs can be managed by hand-picking (be sure to wear gloves if utilizing this method), using hand-held vacuums to suck the insects off the plant, or by treating the plants with pesticides. If choosing to use a pesticide, read the product label and make sure it can be used in the area you are treating (i.e. vegetable garden).
