BOARD MESSAGE Lots of wonderful things are happening in the Courtyard! We are happy to announce that we are making the necessary plans to hold our annual Fourth of July parade and picnic in the park. As of the writing of this article in early May, we are reserving vendors and planning to hold the parade and picnic starting mid-morning on Saturday, July 3. We will line up starting at 10:30AM and then leave at 10:45AM from the corner of Scout Island Circle South and Courtyard Drive, with the picnic in the park to follow immediately after the parade. Please note that this is a different starting place and that the parade will follow a slightly shorter route this year. We will be following City of Austin Health Authority guidelines and CDC guidelines. As we get closer to the event, we will update everyone with more specific details. A HUGE thank you to Joany Price for planning and coordinating everything that makes July 4th special!!! Volunteers are needed to help with the work; please email Joany at joanyprice@gmail. com. There are some exciting updates in the HOA Common areas that have been added this past month. In the Park, we have installed speed bumps on the downhill drive inside the gate. We are happy to report that we’ve had lots of positive feedback on this safety improvement to slow down speeding cars as they near the playscape area. Many thanks to Terry Edwards, Jim Lloyd, and our Park Safety Task Force. In the Boat Storage Lot and Launch Area (by the County Line) we have installed additional security fencing and a new gate, which will now operate easily with one hand! A gate operator is planned, and will make this area accessible in a way almost identical to the Park, using a keypad. Additionally, Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.
there is a gated pedestrian entrance with a code, also similar to the Park. These much-needed improvements will help prevent non-resident trespassers from accessing our private Boat Storage Lot and Launch Area. A big shout out to Jim Lloyd, Ed & Jan Ueckert, and Frank Apgar for shepherding this project. Park Volunteer Day was held on Saturday May 1, and in spite of the threat of rain, we had a great turnout! Thank you to Terry Edwards and all of our volunteers who installed Kiddie Cushion in the playscape area and hauled downed branches out of the wooded areas. It looks great!! At the April Board meeting, the Board approved the addition of a standing committee for the Boat Storage Lot & Launch Area. Anyone interested in serving on the committee please contact Board Members Meredith Massey-Kloetzer or Jim Lloyd. meremass@gmail.com jLloyd@austin.rr.com In the near future, HOA Board will likely return to in-person Board meetings at the Atrium office building located on the corner of Scout Island Circle North and Courtyard Drive. Please watch your email for Board Agenda information which will contain the location of future meetings. As we enter the summer months and peak usage time for Bull Creek and our private Park, be assured we always receive feedback when non-residents are in the Park. The gate code may NOT be given to any non-residents – unaccompanied non-residents in the Park will be asked to leave immediately. Violators may be subject to fines and/or loss of Park privileges. The gate code will be changed each time we learn of the gate code being shared inappropriately, so please do the right thing and DO NOT BE that person. As always, please DRIVE SLOWLY in the Courtyard!! Courtyard Caller - June 2021

COURTYARD BOOK CLUB Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at 1 p.m. 5612 North Scout Island Circle
Wallace Stegner’s 1987 semi-autobiographical novel Crossing to Safety is the story of the relationship between two married couples over a period of years. It will be the focus of the July 6 meeting of the Courtyard Book Club. The story is told mostly through flashbacks over decades, starting while they are all young, and progressing to their retirement years. The work of the men as writers and professors at the University of Wisconsin brings them together. Over the decades they remain in each others’ lives and vacation together in summers in Vermont. The book explores the emotions, strengths, frailties, and challenges they all bring to the relationship and to their own marriages. When Stegner authored Crossing to Safety, he had won a Pulitizer prize and a National Book Award for other works. As of this publication, the Courtyard Book Club plans to meet at the home of one of its members at 1 p.m. July 6. The exact location will be included in an email from Lou Blemaster closer to the time of the meeting. In it, she will notify all of the definite meeting logistics, including location. Participants are asked to wear masks for the protection of others and themselves, whether vaccinated or not. However, if public health guidelines and circumstances dictate, the Book Club will revert to Zoom video conferencing until in-person gatherings are considered safe. Your patience is appreciated during this period of flux. One thing that hasn’t changed is that the book club meets the first Tuesday of each month. To receive book club emails, contact Lou at LouBlemaster@gmail.com. Even those who haven’t read the monthly book are welcomed to join your neighbors for some stimulating discussion. Immature leaffooted bugs.
Adult leaffooted bug.
Leaffooted bug adults may be mistaken for stink bugs while the immatures may get confused with assassin bug nymphs. Leaffooted bugs are larger than stink bugs and have an elongated body. Often, leaffooted bugs have an expanded region on their hind leg that looks similar to a leaf, hence the name leaffooted bug. Adults are fairly large and grayish-brown. Immatures, or nymphs, look similar to adults, but are often reddish-orange in color and do not have fully developed wings. Leaffooted bugs feed on a variety of fruits, nuts and seeds, such as tomatoes, peppers, pecans or sunflower seeds. They have piercing-sucking mouthparts with which they puncture fruit to suck out juices. The opening left behind after the mouthpart is withdrawn can allow access to secondary invaders like bacteria or fungus. Leaffooted bugs can be managed by hand-picking (be sure to wear gloves if utilizing this method), using hand-held vacuums to suck the insects off the plant, or by treating the plants with pesticides. If choosing to use a pesticide, read the product label and make sure it can be used in the area you are treating (i.e. vegetable garden).
