Summer is quickly approaching. It is time to get out and enjoy all of what Cypress has to offer—graduations, weddings, birthdays, our own Farmers Market, swimming, picnics, outdoor music, and the list goes on. For sure, you'll not want to miss Father's Day as we celebrate all our Dads on June 20. If you are lucky enough to have a father, grandfather, uncle, even a special neighbor, make sure to let them know how much they mean to you. If you take him out to eat, please patronize our local restaurants. We have scores from which to choose. If you are out and about, please stop in at Fairfield Farmers Market. Meet your neighbors and support the home team. There is so much there to enjoy and learn about. In this issue, we introduce you to the Cypress area's own Batmobile, have another wave of graduates for your to salute and remind you to check out local music and trips for seniors in addition to new churches, schools, events, and organizations. Harris County Constable Mark Herman's office has given us Fairfield's detailed activities and statics by the deputy for April. The Gazette is dedicated to the people of Fairfield. I feel immensely grateful to be living in a community with such wholesome values and good people. Please be on the lookout for inspiring stories about your neighbors. We love hearing from you. Send your comments, questions, and/or concerns to jackiedevine@comcast.net.

by Jackie Devine As you all know, Thomas Coffman, our local photographer, is always on the lookout for great photo ops, and, when the opportunity arises, he points me in the direction of compelling stories. This time we both hit the jackpot. He was able to get some outstanding photos of his dad's 80th birthday, and I was able to meet the owner of a genuine Batmobile. "My dad, Tommy Coffman's, 80th birthday was just around the corner," Tom explained. "and since it was such a milestone, we didn't want to celebrate using time-worn clichéd party ideas. My wife Kari and I wanted something creative, unique, and unforgettable. That's when we stumbled upon Karl Wawarosky, owner of the Houston Batmobile, and his 1966 Batmobile. "A few weeks before Dad's birthday, we met with Karl and made arrangements for him to come to my house on April 15th. "It started out at Luby's. Karl showed up just as we were finishing dinner. I introduced him to my dad as a neighbor. We handed Dad his gifts, and he opened them one by one. The last one was the Robin T-Shirt (cape attached on the back) and the Robin mask. I told him to go into the bathroom and put it on. He said, 'What is this? I am NOT putting this on.'" "I realized he might feel a little timid about parading around in Luby's with a Robin T-Shirt, but insisted, that he go and put it on. Again he said, 'No way am I putting this on.' "So I told him to stand up and look out the window as I pointed to the car. He said, 'WOW!' I told him if he put the shirt on, he could ride in it. He grabbed that shirt and put it on right over his other shirt. By now, a crowd had gathered in the parking lot. Our birthday celebrity climbed in the passenger seat, and they drove around to 'Na Na Na Na Batman' blaring out the speakers. That was a birthday he'll never forget! I think most people would agree that Karl Wawarosky's Batmobile with its double-bubble windshields, loooong bat fins, bat-phone, flashing red beacon light, parachutes, and working flame thrower, has to be one of the coolest, most fascinating cars to cruise the streets of Cypress in a long time. And, just like the day of Tommy's birthday party, from the moment he pulls out of his "Bat Cave," AKA garage, no matter where Karl goes, the crowds begin to gather. Curious about how Karl came to acquire his precious toy, I contacted him. He told me, "When I ordered the Batmobile from Fiberglass Freaks, back in 2014, my main goal was to fulfill a childhood dream. Today, it has expanded into a charitable venue for organizations like The Sun Shine Kids as well as a business venture. So far, the Batmobile has shown up at birthday parties, weddings, grand openings, and even funerals." Karl has participated in events as far away north as Dallas and east as San Antonio. Each year he participates in the San Antonio August Bat Loco Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.
Bash, where they celebrate the bats flying out from beneath the freeway and, on September 25th, he will take part in the Laps for Lungs Walk-A-Thon, in Porter, Texas. "After I placed my order, it took two years for the folks at Fiberglass Freaks to custom-build the car." Karl continued, "They started with a 1977 Lincoln Town Car because they needed a long body frame to accommodate the custom-built chassis, four-wheel disc brakes, and rack and pinion steering. They constructed the body out of thick fiberglass. Electric actuators open the hood and trunk with the flip of a switch. For safety, the car also includes a firewall, engine apron walls, and wheel well tubs. "And for those interested in the power and drive train, they will find a 383GM Crate engine—a Monster 350 transmission and an Allison Posi Track rear end." Karl tells me his prized possession is insured for $200,000, but it could be that he needs to up the ante since I found that the car is now selling for $299,999 on the Fiberglass Freaks website. "Owning the Batmobile has added a purpose and meaning to my life I never would have imagined," added Karl. "When I drive around town, and throughout the state of Texas, wherever I go, I bring smiles to faces. There is so much hate in the world now that when I pull up someplace with the car, it does my heart good to see people smiling, talking and getting along. People come out of the woodwork to see the car. It doesn't matter, boy or girl, young or old, black, brown, or white, when they come up to the Batmobile, they are already smiling. Some are remembering when they were a child before they learned how to judge and hate. "If I can destroy hate, one person at a time, just by pulling the car out of the "Bat Cave," then it is worth it. I'm using happiness and respect to pull people together." Traveling Seniors Take In San Antonio by Jackie Devine
Thirty-Five Seniors from the Cypress area traveled to San Antonio on May 5th to experience Cinco de Mayo in the Alamo City. Their first stop was The Buckhorn Saloon & Museum, located at 318 E. Houston Street, just two blocks from the Alamo. The Buckhorn Saloon has been known as the gathering place for great food, good conversation, and spectacular wildlife exhibits for 140 years. Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders are reputed to have frequented the establishment. Seniors strolled through 33,000 feet of artifacts focusing on Texas history and explored hundreds of rare and unique animal species from around the world. They even got to examine a replica of Bonnie and Clyde’s get-away car. From there, travelers meandered around Market Square, purported to be the largest Mexican market in the United States, a three-block outdoor plaza lined with shops and restaurants, then they were off to lunch at Mi Tierra’s. Upon leaving, many of the travelers made a stop at their delicious bakery, and explored a few more shops in Market Square. It was then time to head back to Cypress. If you are looking to meet interesting people, learn new things, and explore Texas history, Traveling Seniors of Cypress sponsored trips might be the ticket. They are safe, fun, traveler-friendly, and reasonably priced. Regardless of your interests or how much ink you’ve logged in your passport, with the Traveling Seniors of Cypress, you will explore places and meet people that will add dimension and meaning to your life. The birds are chirping, and the people are clapping! Cypress hosted more than 50 LIVE MUSIC Shows in April! I think it’s safe to say that the music scene in My Hometown is makin’ a comeback – BIG TIME! I can feel the excitement increasing, momentum gaining ground and the energy that pulses through the veins of music makers, coursing. Cypress hosted huge shows with huge artists, which only left us craving more! I got to meet Galveston resident Britney Doyal, who opened the show for Stoney LaRue at The Barn on 4/17/21! I became an instant fan! Even though it rained that night, none of us tossed in the white flag. We stayed. We opened our umbrellas, took advantage of the canopy of trees above us, lit the fire-pits to stay warm and had one heck of a time! I truly haven’t seen people enjoying life like this in a long while. It. Is. Time... *All shows subject to change, no guarantee. Around Fairfield Field Day Despite Pandemic Submitted by Lindsey Pickett, Ault PTO VP Membership and Social Media
Field day is something that kids look forward to every year. With this year’s restrictions the coaches at Ault knew that it would be difficult to have field day if they would be allowed to have it at all. With Covid restrictions becoming more relaxed the coaches at Ault were given permission to have field day. Coach Neven and Coach Smith came up with a way to make it all happen. They decide to do a field day for all grade levels in one day. They did this by using each grade levels regular large group time. This couldn’t have been done without help from several volunteers. There were about 32 total volunteers that were able to come and help during the day. They were spread out over the six grade levels in multiple shifts. The volunteers helped sanitize hands and equipment and took tons of photos to share with parents. The students rotated through eight different stations and got to spend some fun out in the sun. Students got to participate in jump roping, basketball toss, football race, and a baton relay to name a few. During their lunch time they all got a popsicle. Thanks to all the Ault administration team and staff for working to find a way to still hold field day. Ault Staff Gets Celebrated all Month Long. into one week, teacher appreciation week will become teacher appreciation month at Ault Elementary. Traditionally teacher appreciation day is the Tuesday of the first full week of May. Most schools want to celebrate their teachers all week and will often have multiple treats or gifts for each day. The admin team and the PTO Hospitality Committee asked the teachers if they wanted one week packed full of teacher appreciation or would they like it spread out over the whole month of May. The teachers responded that they wanted it spread out. This is a win win as it gives the PTO hospitality committee a lot more flexibility on when they can set up catered lunches and other special days for the teachers. For example, PTO is setting up a lunch for the teachers on May 17th which is a remote learning day. This will allow the teachers to eat in a more relaxed setting then if it had been during the traditional teacher appreciation week.

The success of any program starts with a vision, a plan, and leadership. Without a doubt, this dedicated team creates the band program’s vision and drives its success. Despite the challenges of this year, our directors inspired the students to commit to excellence and to strive to reach their goals. The result? Superior ratings for all four bands. Four outstanding directors. Four top quality bands. Four Sweepsteaks awards. One sensational band program.

The Bridgeland High School yearbook staff won a National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Pacemaker Award for their 2020 yearbook, titled All Caught Up. The award was announced virtually on April 10 during the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention. The NSPA Pacemaker Award is scholastic journalism’s top award and is only given to fewer than 30 high school yearbooks across the country each year. Entries are judged by teams of professionals based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography and graphics. “This award is our national championship, and it’s for a book we finished sitting in the school parking lots during a pandemic,” said Samantha Berry, Bridgeland yearbook adviser. “From the day Bridgeland opened, we were focused on what we could achieve in scholastic journalism and the kids were hungry for it. But even more, they were hungry to produce a product their community would love and be proud of. So much goes into a high school publication. The planning takes months and then it takes time to make it happen. Students balance their academic, work and social schedules with a publication schedule that can change in seconds because of a snowstorm, hurricane, rained-out tournament or pandemic. They can’t stop because memories are on the line—we must keep reporting and going. “That’s what Bridgeland Student Media staffers did. They pushed through unprecedented times to create a publication that has been recognized as one of the best in the world. Their success is a quiet one. There are no parades, sendoffs or ceremonies for this win, but there is an adviser who thinks the world of them. I am eternally grateful for all these young journalists’ sacrifice to make great publications.” This year’s Pacemaker contest featured approximately 380 yearbooks competing for the prestigious title. Only 22 yearbooks received the award representing the top seven percent of high school yearbooks. “Winning this award means all of our work was worth it,” said Madison Gunn, Bridgeland senior and co-editor-in-chief. “The long hours in the journalism room before we got sent home for the year and the blazing heat we endured as we sat in the school parking lots so we could connect to the Wi-Fi was worth it. Winning a Pacemaker means that we created one of the best books in the entire nation as

only a third-year school at the time. It validates what I already knew; that I work with an amazing staff and adviser that are willing to do whatever it takes to make something spectacular.” In addition to the Pacemaker Award, Bridgeland’s 2020 yearbook placed third in the country for theme development in the NSPA Individual Awards contest. Bridgeland’s 2019 yearbook, What’s Next?, was a Pacemaker finalist in last year’s competition. “Winning a Pacemaker is so motivating,” said Cara Hudson, Bridgeland senior and co-editor-in-chief. “Quarantine was a genuine struggle for me and despite everything that was going on last year, I felt like a yearbook was the one constant that we had the power to give. From Hurricane Harvey to a global lockdown, we have made it out thriving and there’s something undeniably special about our program.”

Bridgeland in the Top 20 6A One Acts in the State Adam Windsor Delka
Super proud of this group right here. We were in the top 20 6A one acts in the state of Texas. Not too shabby. Sad that we are not advancing to the big dance, but we stand by our show and performance and know that we told a beautiful story. I couldn’t ask for more with this being my first year at Bridgeland, and this only being the school’s 4th year in existence. Lots of amazing things are ahead for this program. We are successful for making it this far, and for battling through the hardest year of teaching/school in my career. So many challenges and stressors. But SO many victories. We are not bitter. We are grateful. We are proud. We are learning and growing stronger with each experience. We will not take our accomplishments this year for granted.

The Fairfield Women’s club is overjoyed with the HOA approval for our July 4th parade followed by our 4th@Fairfield event. Plans are underway for holding festivities on Saturday, July 3rd with the Parade starting at Ault Elementary, 9-10 am and the 4th@Fairfield event at Keith Elementary from 10-1 pm. We will have a DJ/Band in the cafeteria, food trucks, and vendors in the gym/or hallway and of course outside activities for the children. Everything is free except the food. We had a big disappointment last year when everything was canceled due to Covid, but we are pleased to bring back our annual 4th of July parade and 4th@Fairfield event. We would like to thank Fairfield Village Community Association for the contribution of funds which will help make this an exciting event for our Fairfield family. We are currently looking for Members from the community to display their products (no selling on school property) at a cost of $35 per booth. We also need sponsors for various activities; numerous jumping houses, face painting, and the Balloon Lady. Sponsorship for these items are $100-$500. Sponsors will be included in all advertising on Facebook and in the Fairfield Gazette. For those interested in a booth or sponsorship, please apply at fairfieldwomensclub@gmail.com. Next Fairfield Women’s Club meeting is June 15th, 7:00pm at Bradford Creek Clubhouse. Fairfield Community Gazette - June 2021
