By Hope Teel

By Eva Wisser Hello Jester Neighbors, Let me introduce myself, I am the new President of Jester HOA. I agreed to take on this position because I had the longest tenure of the current JHOB members, but I hope to pass on the President's position to a newer member of JHOB once folks get familiar with the Board's duties. First of all, I do want to thank the most recent, past President, Christi Campbell, for her dedication to the neighborhood and for all of her hard work. It will be difficult to live up to Christi's standard of expertise and her zeal. I also wanted to share a bit on my background. I moved to Jester in 1995 and served two stints on the JHOA Board— once in the late 1990s and secondly, for the past few years. I am a member of Jester Club, and I participate in many neighborhood activities, such as Book Club and Bunko. I also may be familiar to you as the lady in charge of refreshments for the children's events that our JHOB Social Chair, Teresa Gouldie, managed for 20+ years. Many thanks to Teresa for her extraordinary efforts as Social Chair, as none of these events could have happened without her organization skills. Continued on Page 4

And WOW, she’s got some talent! The composition of this photo for a younger teen is very impressive. The vision for this angle, Texas Lantana, by Abby Marloh the depth of field and the vibrancy of the colors make for a beautiful photograph. Great job, Abby, and thanks for the submission! As a reminder, we welcome submissions of all ages, and are happy to share different types of content. If your child has an interest in photography, send us a photo or two. If they want to submit a story, poem or writing of any other sort, send that on too! We are excited to see the creativity of the young minds of Jester! Dealing with Pets During a Wildfire By Carol Philipson

Jester Selected for AFD Operational Readiness Training Event on July 27 By Carol Philipson

Austin is in a HIGH RISK Wildfire area, 5th highest in the US. Jester Estates is especially vulnerable, being surrounded by a huge expanse of Greenbelt. Because of these facts, Lt. Steve Gibbons and the Austin Fire Department staff selected Jester Estates & River Place for this training session. Firefighters in the Midst Jancy Drive will be the site of Battling Wildfires for Operational Readiness Training with the Austin Fire Fighters. This training will teach wildfire fighting skills, learned from the experience of California fire-fighting experts. This 4-hour training will result in 24 newly trained wild firefighters who will in turn train others so all Austin firefighters will be proficient in case of a wildfire. On Tuesday, July 27 from 1-5pm, Firetrucks & other AFD vehicles along with 24 Firemen will be in Jester for 4-5 hours for this training. *Notices will be issued by AFD to all Jester residents *No need for homeowners to be home as there will be no direct involvement *News Media will be present as well as Alison Alter ***IMPORTANT: NO PARKING ON JANCY DURING THAT TIME*** 5 FIRE TRUCKS TAKE UP A LOT OF SPACE and WILL NEED TO TURN AROUND IN THE CUL-DE-SAC! A follow-up session will be held on Friday, July 29, but no fire trucks will be used. The time will be announced later to inform residents. Signs will be posted within Jester to advise all residents of the training, and to prevent causing alarm.

Our Jester Neighbor, Leanna Gillam Leanna Gillam, after reading all of the warnings about a repeat of 2011, thought it would be wise to be prepared by having a FireWise home evaluation. Leanna was very receptive to all suggestions made, and especially those made about pets. You can also learn how to protect your home, family and pets from the threat of wild fires by scheduling your FireWise home evaluation. The Firewise home evaluation is FREE to all Jester homeowners. To schedule yours today email us at firewise@jesterhoa.com 4

meet the salamanders by Jim and Lynne Weber

NW-Austin Blind Salamander Rare and under threat of decreasing population, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has stated that the Jollyville Plateau Salamander (Eurycea tonkawae) warrants protection under the Endangered Species Act, due to its habitat undergoing rapid degradation as a result of urban and suburban sprawl. Found only in the wet springs and caves of the Jollyville segment of the Edwards Plateau region of Travis and Williamson counties, the area this salamander inhabits is roughly bounded by the Colorado River, Mopac (Loop 1), Lake Travis, and U.S. 183. More specifically, its known range is limited to only six stream drainages, all of which are facing water quality issues. Very little is known about this small, localized amphibian. Juvenile Jollyville Plateau Salamanders are less than 1.5 inches long, and the adults grow to up to 2 inches long. They have large well-developed eyes, wide yellowish heads, feathery external gills, blunt rounded snouts, dark greenish-brown bodies, and yellowish-orange tails. Most salamanders have feather-like external gills when they are young, but the Jollyville Plateau Salamander is neotenic, or keeps these external gills and remains aquatic for its entire adult life. Since they never take a terrestrial form, these salamanders prefer cool, shallow, clean water containing loose gravel. During drier periods, they remain in underground caves and water is provided for them by the infiltration of surface water through the soil into the aquifer which discharges from the springs as groundwater. Two other local salamanders have received protected status by the US Fish & Wildlife Service. These are the Barton Springs Salamander (Eurycea sosorum) and its lesser-known cousin the Austin Blind Salamander (Eurycea waterlooensis). Urbanization has been known to cause excess sediment to accumulate into the aquifer these salamanders inhabit and this sediment impairs their ability to avoid predators, locate food, and find mates. In addition, development of upstream salamander habitat provides sources of various other pollutants such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and petroleum products. During rainstorms, water runs off these urban areas and transports these pollutants into the salamander’s aquatic habitat. This degradation of water quality has been shown to be linked to deformities of the Jollyville salamander in some locations, as well as to declines in abundance of salamanders compared to areas that are undeveloped. While the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve (BCP) provides some water quality benefits for the Jollyville Plateau Salamander through the preservation of drainages in the open space, several of the areas within its range have been or are being affected by water quality degradation occurring upstream and outside of the preserved tracts. Work is being done to monitor and improve these areas within the BCP, but residents in neighborhoods surrounding the preserve can go a long way in helping to restore and maintain water quality by carefully disposing motor vehicle fluids, washing cars at a commercial car wash (where the water is captured Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.

& recycled), fertilizing wisely (organically), using compost, and planting native plants that have no need for chemical pesticides & herbicides. And lastly, do what you can to help support the purchase and preservation of open space, unique natural features, and rare inhabitants of the hill country -- it Keeps Austin Beautiful! Send your nature-related questions to naturewatch@austin.rr.com and we’ll do our best to answer them. Jester Estates By Nicholas Pantaleoni

The Mitchells vs. The Machines - Directed by: Michael Rianda This month my family roped me into watching an absolutely wacky, family-friendly movie, and you guessed it! Its underlying themes are all about the importance of family. If you’re a fan of other animated movies such as Big Hero 6, The Incredibles, or Spider-man Into the Spiderverse, then you should definitely give this movie a watch! While it does have a slow and generic-feeling plot in the beginning, the movie rapidly develops its own unique vibe that keeps the viewer engages and entertained. The film absolutely radiates a Scott Pilgrim vs. The World type energy, but takes it to a new level in the form of cut-aways, random characters, and “accents” around characters. That being said, the film’s overarching storyline has that similar feel-good type plot like almost any other movie centered on family; and while the visual effects are dazzling, the audience doesn’t really learn anything they don’t already know (assuming they have seen movies like the ones mentioned above). Overall, The Mitchells vs. the Machines is a good movie, but it lacks depth, and the enjoyment is all surface level and fairly predictable.
