FIREWORKS / FIRECRACKERS

PROHIBITED

Steiner Ranch Fireworks Policy

Residents are reminded that fireworks within Steiner Ranch are prohibited by the Steiner Ranch Master Association and Steiner Ranch Residential Association. There are a number of reasons for this: 1) The use of fireworks places homes at serious risk of fire. 2) The topography and green space of Steiner Ranch is conducive to fires. 3)Federal rules regarding management of the Balcones Canyonlands (which borders Steiner Ranch) impose significant restrictions on activities that may affect wildlife therein. Serious penalties for violation can be imposed by federal officials. 4) Homeowners are entitled to the peaceful enjoyment of their property. Should you believe a violation is occurring, please complete a " Report a Restriction Violation" as soon as possible at https:// www.ciranet.com/ResidentPortal or immediately following an occurrence. Physical and/or photographic evidence is essential in substantiating a violation.

July 2021 Steiner Ranch Residential Landscaping Tips - Irrigation Maintenance by: Michael Williams – Urban Dirt The heat of summer is now upon us and this is the most important time to assure that supplemental landscape irrigation systems are functioning as efficiently as possible. The average irrigation system is typically only 40%-50% efficient in terms of water distribution uniformity. Mother Nature provides the best water distribution but is unreliable during a central Texas summer so operating our irrigation systems is the next best thing. To operate a system correctly it is important to know the system well and visually inspect it regularly. Irrigation systems have many moving parts and can move out of adjustment after just a few cycles. It is recommended that systems are visually inspected every month making minor adjustments and repairs along the way. Additionally, plants can grow to block heads over time and it is important to make modifications to the system to prevent this or to prune plants in a way that does not block the spray patterns. Inspections, repairs and adjustments are important but programming is key. A typical landscape in Central Texas requires ½” to ¾” of supplemental water every week to stay healthy and thrive. It is important to program appropriately for the types of emitters your system has. A spray nozzle emits approximately 1.5” of water per hour while a rotary type head only emits approximately ½” per hour. Many factors like pressure and nozzle type can affect these calculations but these are good rules of thumb. Using the data above, an average spray zone would need to operate for 20 minutes every week while a rotor zone would need to operate for a full hour every week. Knowing your equipment is important when scheduling. Continued onPage 8

Continued from Page 6 Site conditions also play a factor in efficient programming. Factors to consider are slope, sun exposure, soil type, and vegetation type. These can all dramatically affect how long a specific zone should irrigate for. Other recommendations to provide the best water distribution are to irrigate at night when winds are typically lower and temperatures are cooler to reduce evaporation. Programming utilizing cycle and soak utilizes shorter more frequent runtimes that allows more water to soak into the soil instead of running off. Lastly, watering the landscape deeper between irrigation days promotes larger more robust root systems that help plants survive the heat of the summer. Getting up close and personal with your irrigation system is key to a healthy landscape and effective water usage. So go put on your sun hat, swimming suit and go have fun in the water!

Steiner Ranch Signage Rules and Regulation With the recent increase of unauthorized open house directional signs and other temporary signs, the HOA staff has been receiving multiple complaints from residents and local realtors. We would like to remind everyone of the below outlined Steiner Ranch Signage Rules and Regulations necessary to maintain the aesthetics and consistency across the community. OPEN HOUSE DIRECTIONAL SIGNS For Sale Signs - The Association has always had sign restrictions that allowed for one (1) “For Sale” sign on the front of the lot where a house is for sale. The rules also allow one (1) Open House” sign to be displayed with the “For Sale” sign on the front of the lot on the day of the open house. Sign Placement • The Association makes no representation that placing a sign anywhere permitted by these rules achieves compliance with governmental sign ordinances, and individuals placing signs are solely responsible for ensuring compliance with all governmental agencies. Signs will not be considered in violation of community rules if they are placed as follows: • Open House Directional Signs are limited to one (1) sign per agent per change of direction at an intersection corner in the landscaped area (turf or planter bed) between the curb and sidewalk or a maximum of three feet (3’) back from the curb when no sidewalk is present. However, at no time will more than three (3) Open House • Directional Signs be allowed at the same intersection corner pointing in the same direction. Multiple Open House signs pointing in the same direction must be placed within three inches (3”) of one another and in line to appear as one sign. If more than three (3) Open House Directional Signs are located at the same corner pointing in the same direction, the Association will confiscate one of the violating signs. News from the Trails Committee by Sterling Gray

Well, the “dog days” of summer have arrived. According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the phrase is actually a reference to the fact that, during this time, the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star visible from any part of Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. Doesn’t seem right to blame it on man’s best friend. While we all enjoy our AC this time of year, its still nice to get out on the trails for some fresh air and relaxation (or exercise). If you happen to be hiking Bright Sky Overlook trail, you might notice a new addition near the northern terminus of the trail. The Trails Committee has installed another bench, with a scenic and shaded view of Lake Austin. A great place to take a water break and cool off for a moment. I think you will agree, we are very fortunate to have nearly 20 miles of hiking trails and our own slice of hill country heaven, right in our backyard. So get out and enjoy the trails! If you enjoy our wonderful trails and would like to lend a hand, we hold monthly trail maintenance events on the fourth Sunday of each month. To learn more, visit the Steiner Ranch Trail Committee Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/srtrailcommittee). As always, we on the Trails Committee hope to see you out on the trails soon!

Help Animals Beat the Heat

by Johanna Arendt and Jeremy Hull, Travis County Balcones Canyonlands Preserve As we enter the hot summer months, everyone will be feeling the heat, including animals. But unlike us, wildlife can't move into the AC to cool off. So how do they manage? Many have tricks and adaptations to help them get through the Texas summer, but they can still use a little help from us. The easiest way for wildlife to survive the heat is just to avoid it. Many animals are nocturnal, such as foxes, ringtail cats, and opossums. They are only active at night when temperatures are cooler, and they spend their days resting in hollow trees, underground dens, and other protected Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.

spaces. Others are active mostly at dawn and dusk, like rabbits, bobcats, chimney swifts, and many reptiles. They sleep at night and spend their days in shade. Some animals are flexible, changing their schedules based on temperature, season, and food availability. These animals, like armadillos and white-tailed Gray fox visiting a pond at night. Photo by Heather Valey. deer, can switch between being diurnal (active during the day), crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk), and even nocturnal (active at night), depending on conditions. Many animals have also evolved characteristics and behaviors that help them cool off. The ears of black-tailed jackrabbits, for example, are not just for hearing. As blood flows through their comically long ears, body heat escapes into the air. And we have all seen dogs panting to release heat, but did you know that some birds do this as well? Next time you see doves sitting in the sun, see if they are breathing rapidly to cool down. Even though these animals have evolved ways to deal with the heat, times of extreme temperatures and drought can still be difficult, even dangerous for them. With the climate changing, the number of hot, dry days is only increasing, and many natural sources of water dry up due to heat, lack of rain, and pumping of the aquifers. Fortunately, we can help wildlife out by providing water. You can put out a birdbath, or Thirsty roadrunner. Photo even just leave out bowls of by Stephen Sinclair water. Just be sure to empty and clean them regularly to prevent the spread of bacteria, disease, and mosquitos. To help small animals like birds, butterflies, and other insects, place rocks and sticks at the edge of the bowl or birdbath to give them a place to perch. It can also help them climb out of the water. Ponds and other water features are also great amenities. If you put up a game camera, you’ll be surprised at the wide range of wildlife you’ll see coming to take a drink. Ponds also give frogs, dragonflies, and other wildlife a place to reproduce. To keep ponds mosquito-free, keep the water flowing with a small fountain, aerator, or a waterfall that will recirculate the water. You can also introduce native fish such as mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) or bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), which eat mosquito larvae. Planting shade trees and other native vegetation also go a long way to making your yard a refuge for birds and other wildlife. The long hot summer days ahead of us are bearable as long as you have ways to manage the heat. The Balcones Canyonlands Preserve and other wildlands in the area help animals by providing spring-fed creeks and ponds, and lots of shady spots to rest and recharge. But especially during times of drought and extreme heat, wildlife can use all the help they can get, so putting out birbaths and other water sources can help a lot. The Steiner Stars swim team is celebrating its 20th Anniversary with a fantastic, fun season despite COVID-19! Everyone is really happy to be back on the team, back in the pool, and once again with all of their friends. With last season canceled, and schools mostly virtual, for many of the swimmers this was the first time seeing old friends and coaches in over a year. June 5th we had our first swim meet of the 2021 season for both Red and Blue teams. This year the Meets have to be virtual, which means we swim in our home pool while our opponents swim in theirs. The team chose a Hawaiian theme for our first meet. Tents were decorated, kids and parents wore Hawaiian shirts and leis, and the pool was ringed with tiki torches. Despite the relaxed, festive atmosphere the Red and Blue teams swam hard and fast! It's clear that even after taking a year off, the Steiner Stars are back and once again a formidable force in our Northwest swim circuit! Many swimmers set personal best times and many more had qualifying times for the Invitational Meet usually held once the season ends. This season would not have been possible without the outpouring of support from the Steiner Ranch community, the Northwest Swim Circuit, The Steiner HOA, and all of the many kids and parent volunteers on the team. A big THANK YOU to everyone for helping us make our 20th anniversary a success!! This year's roster is full but next year we'll be back bigger and better than ever! Get more info and watch for our Spring enrollment announcements on our website Steinerstars.org. We'd love to have you come and join us for summer swim league 2022. We guarantee you'll find friends, neighbors and classmates already on the team. Come swim with us! (Residents must be in good standing with the HOA to register and agree to volunteer requirements to participate in the league. Space in each age group is limited. Swimmers must be 5 years or older by May 1, 2022, to participate. Our team is run BY the residents, FOR the residents!) Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.
