Hello Jester Neighbor, Fall is finally here and hopefully cooler weather is just around the corner. I am enjoying seeing some Jester homes decorated for the fall season and hope to see more. I am pleased to report that Candice Wong is the new Chair of the Architectural Committee. Erica Flynn will also be on the committee. Many thanks for these two Jester neighbors willing to step forward to volunteer their time on this critical committee. Also a heartfelt thank you to Ron Herzfeld for his past tireless work on the Architectural Review Committee and current efforts as Jester’s CONA representative. Carol Philipson’s Welcome Committee delivered six welcome bags this summer to new Jester residents and

by Carol Philipson It was quite the scene to see 5 fire trucks rolling down Jester Blvd! Jester Estates was chosen for Wildfire Training. 17 Expert WildFire Trainers taught 24 Austin firefighters new techniques for fighting wildfire. Those Austin firefighters in turn will teach other firemen so the entire AFD will be proficient in fighting wildfires. To this date, AFD firemen were only trained for structure fire fighting. This new training is setting the standard for national wildfire training. Jester was fortunate to be selected as well as River Place since we are highest in risk in Austin for wildfire. Allison Alter, District 10 Council Member, has been diligently working to spread the urgency of specialized wildfire training to other council members, especially as the urban interface continues to grow with Austin’s expansion. Her persistence resulted in getting this training approved. Experts from California, Nevada, Maine, Colorado and West Texas spoke to media explaining details of the training. They all agreed that the fire department can only do so much. It's up to us, the homeowners, to take responsibility to learn how to mitigate the risk of fire burning our home.

has more planned for late September. If you know of any new residents in the neighborhood please contact Carol. Carol is also the Firewise chair and arranged for another two houses in recent weeks to be evaluated for firewise safety. If your house has not been evaluated please reach out to Carol to receive this valuable information. The traffic sign on Jester seems to be malfunctioning. Please be sure to watch your speed, since we do not want to see the return of speed bumps. Due to the covid 19 Delta variant JHOA is planning on meeting via zoom on October 12 at 7, rather than in person. Please go to the Jester website to obtain a link to this meeting. Austin definitely has changed. attracting people from all over the US and other countries. Jester’s latest new residents fit the trend, moving from as far away as Singapore, France, California and from other parts of Austin, the Domain and Brentwood. Why Jester Estates? Not only the views, the quiet, and the fact that there’s no drive-thru traffic, but also the cultural diversity. Jester is home to so many different cultures. Darcy Peditti from France was pleasantly surprised and felt right at home when encountering another resident speaking French during her first visit to the Jester Pool. Darcy knew that she & Massimo chose the right neighborhood. All Jester Newbies agreed their new neighbors are genuinely caring and friendly. As lucky as these new residents feel about joining the Jester community, we are equally as lucky to have them choose Jester as their home.

Green Tips by Dale Bulla dale-bulla@pobox.com Neighbors, Some of our neighbors may be new to Jester so here is a refresher course for all of us of watering. Water your lawn once a week with an irrigation system or twice a week with a hose sprinklers. Automatic sprinkler systems water on Wednesday if an odd street address and Thursday if an even one. Hose end system Wednesday and Saturday if odd and Thursday and Sunday if even. Hand-held watering has no restrictions at this time. Always water after sundown or before sun-up to save even more. For more details see the following: Current City of Austin Water Restrictions Austin residents can protect their lakes, the environment, and their future water supply by watering only one day a week with automatic sprinklers and a second day, if need be, with hoses. Join your neighbors in helping your community and wallet by adhering to the mandatory watering days and times. By watering only one day a week with a typical automatic irrigation system rather than two to three times a week, a household could save 7,000 to 14,000 gallons a month. That could be a savings of up to $150 a month, depending on how much additional water is used by a household. For more information: https://www.austintexas.gov/department/find-yourwatering-day 4

False foxgloves Jester Estates by Jim and Lynne Weber

Not much is known about the genus Agalinis, which is a group of about 70 plant species in North, Central, and South America. They are partially parasitic or hemiparasitic, or plants that can make food through photosynthesis but only after siphoning water and mineral nutrients from a host plant, in this case a variety of hosts but most typically grasses. They do this by growing haustoria, or root-like structures that connects their roots to the roots of their host plant. Detailed studies of this perplexing genus are few and far between, and little else is known about each species, including who are their pollinators and what are their historical and current geographic distributions. In fact, many species are rare or endemic to a particular area or even federally protected. Of the 34 species in the US, we have two in central Texas, and they are both some of our showiest fall bloomers. Prairie Agalinis (Agalinis heterophylla), also called Prairie False-Foxglove, is an erect, airy herb, to 2.5 feet tall, with opposite, simple, narrowly linear le a ve s to 1.25 inches long. Its 5-lobed, bell-shaped flowers, pink to lavender-tinted white with purple-red spots in the throat, are 0.75 inches long and arise Prairie Agalinis from the stem on 0.1-inchlong stalks. It is common in the eastern half of Texas, blooms from September to October, and is found in open floodplains, prairies, stream edges, and creekbanks. Easily confused with Prairie Agalinis is Plateau Agalinis (Agalinis edwardsiana), also called Plateau False-Foxglove and Plateau Gerardia, which is uncommon and endemic to the grasslands and open woodlands on rocky limestone slopes in about 12 counties on the Edwards Plateau. It can grow to 3 feet tall, with very similar narrow leaves and pink to rose-colored flowers, but the flowers arise from the stem on much longer, 1.25-inch stalks. It blooms from September to November, and is a host plant and nectar plant for the Common Buckeye butterfly. Left alone, both of these species will develop small, spherical capsules that burst open when dry, releasing several tiny seeds that will develop into next year’s plants. These native fall-bloomers are airy, delicate-looking plants that can easily survive dry soils, and bring much needed color to sunny, rocky areas. In fact, their genus name comes from the Greek aga- an intensifying prefix meaning ‘large or great’ and New Latin Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.
