Hello Jester Neighbors, The holidays are fast approaching, and soon we will see new lights and decorations taking the place of our colorful Halloween and Thanksgiving displays. Thanks to the many neighbors who decorate their homes and yards— some do so for all of the holidays and seasons! The bright lights and colors make a dreary time of the year joyful. The whole neighborhood is appreciative of the time, money and efforts spent to uplift and beautify the neighborhood during these hard Covid-19 years. As a reminder, please stay alert and watch out for suspicious activity in the neighborhood. Additionally, please be sure to retrieve your mail daily, as there are constant reports of cluster mailbox breakins. Be vigilant about porch thieves, and alert the neighborhood through Nextdoor or on our Facebook page if possible. Unfortunately, the holiday season seems to exacerbate these issues. Because of Covid-19, the JHOB meetings are online with Google Meet. Notice of dates and times are posted on the Jester Facebook page. To get a link, please send a request by email to Vice President, Eric Cohan at ericcohan@gmail.com. I am very appreciative of Eric's efforts in organizing JHOB's online meetings—thank you Eric! Best Wishes for safe and happy holidays, Eva Wisser

By Hope Teel The holiday season is quickly approaching, and what a year it has been. With the pandemic continually dampening our community traditions, we would love to continue the Holiday Lights Contest again this year. Afterall, it is almost time to break out those holiday lights and decorations so we can begin to get into the holiday spirit! With the guidance and planning of our awesome neighbor, Jason Allgood, last year’s fun and friendly contest was a huge success! We were able to judge among five categories: The Griswold Award, Santa’s Favorite, Winter Wonderland, Frosty’s Recognition and Nostalgia. Prizes were awarded within each category. We would love to continue the tradition in a similar manner this year. In order to honor the winners in the January print edition of The Warbler, judging will end by December 15th. If you would like to get involved OR would like to donate a prize, please email me at hopeteelcolt@gmail.com. Please follow Nextdoor and/or our community Facebook page for regular announcements and updates as the contest plans continue to develop!

By Carol Philipson Wow! Eight more families recently made Jester Estates their new home. Several moved here from either the East Coast or West Coast, and a few made the trek across town from the east Side of Austin to find more green space and solitude. With so many options of areas for people to choose to call home, these eight families were lucky enough to discover our little piece of heaven. They may have different origins but they all agree, Jester is the place to be to take in nature, relax with great neighbors and to raise a family. Thanksgiving is coming up fast, neighbors, and we have SO much to be thankful for living in Jester with people that actually want to get to know their neighbors. Continued on Page 3

PARADE OF POLLINATORS by Jim and Lynne Weber

Much has been written lately on the importance of pollinators, as they are vital to creating and maintaining the habitats and ecosystems that many animals (including humans!) rely on for food and shelter. In fact, more than one of three bites of food we eat or beverages we drink are directly dependent on the success of pollinators. While most people think of bees as the primary pollinators, or even charismatic groups such as butterflies and hummingbirds, pollinators also come in the form of wasps and flies. This time of year, you can find many of these bees, wasps, and flies nectaring on and pollinating our fall-blooming plants. Aside from the well-known but non-native European Honey Bee, other native bee species that are still around this time of year include the American Bumblebee (Bombus pensylvanicus) and Texas Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa virginica texana). The American Bumblebee is common and robust, to 1 inch, with a thorax yellow in front and black in back, an abdomen with the first three segments yellow and the rest black, and mostly black veined wings. Once abundant, populations have declined significantly in recent years, and it is listed in Texas as a species of ‘greatest conservation need.’ Carpenter bees are typically separated from bumble bees by their big, shiny abdomens. They bore into the surface of wood to build their nests, often leaving a small pile of sawdust underneath. The common Texas Carpenter Bee, to 1 inch, has a thorax covered in yellow hairs with a round black spot on top, a shiny black abdomen, and smoky veined wings. Due to their large size and heaviness, these carpenter bee species often perform what is called ‘nectar robbing’, using their mouthparts to bite through the base of tubular flowers to access nectar rather than entering the flower directly. Wasps differ from bees in that they are smooth, shiny, and often slender or narrow-waisted. The Blue-winged Scoliid Wasp (Scolia dubia) is an uncommon native wasp, to 1 inch, overall black with a mostly reddish abdomen (sometimes with a large yellow spot on each side), and dark blue veined wings. Adults provision their nests with beetle larvae, commonly of Green June Beetles. Flies are actually second in importance to bees as pollinating insects. They pollinate more than 100 cultivated crops and a large number of wild native plant species, including many medicinal plants. In our area, an interesting fly species is the Four-speckled Hover Fly (Dioprosopa clavata). Hover flies have the rare ability to hover and fly backward. This species is 0.5 inches long, with dark brown compound eyes, a black abdomen with two pairs of whitish speckles or dashes, and a pair of clear veined wings with a brown leading edge. Its larvae eat aphids, and this fly is considered to be a wasp mimic, due to its ‘wasp-waisted’ abdomen. This fall, take a closer look at the insects that are busy nectaring on your plants, and pollinating them in the process. Make a difference to their populations by adding a wide variety of native plant species in your yard that bloom from spring to fall, and be sure that you avoid using pesticides. Your actions alone can help promote a healthy parade of pollinators for many months of the year, that in the end benefit us all! Send your nature-related questions to naturewatch@austin.rr.com and we’ll do our best to answer them.
