What is Fair Trade? By now, I'm sure you have heard about the harsh working conditions and illegal labor practices used by some large corporations across the globe. Thankfully, there is a way to buy international goods and still support ethical labor practices, safe working conditions, and fair wages in developing countries. Fair Trade is a form of product trade, born out of the social justice movement. It enforces higher social and environmental standards for producers and international trade companies who wish to be labeled Fair Trade. Fair Trade Labeling Organizations (FLO) decide on Fair Trade Certified Products, and set a price for goods that covers the cost of production plus living wages, enough to cover the basics such as food, shelter, clothing, education, and medical needs. This ensures that workers and producers are paid a fair price for their goods. Importers and retailers are screened and certified by TransFair USA, to make sure they are paying the Fair Trade price for products. Producers of Fair Trade products must follow the fair trade agreement. As part of this agreement, they promise to reinvest some of their revenue into their communities, such as helping to fund health clinics, schools, scholarship funds, housing, leadership training, and women's empowerment programs.

Page 3

Fair Trade companies are also encouraged to follow Eco-friendly and sustainable practices when producing goods, and to respect natural habitats. For instance, about 85% of Fair Trade Certified coffee is grown organically, without the use of toxic chemicals. Businesses are kept at a small scale, and cooperatives are encouraged, wherein every producers owns a portion of the company, has an equal say in decision making, and makes equal returns from the market. Human rights and child labor laws are strictly enforced within Fair Trade companies, safe working conditions are guaranteed for workers, and women are encouraged to take leadership roles in business and community. Buying Fair Trade is a good alternative for buying international goods, without supporting corporate greed. You can have the satisfaction of knowing that your money is helping to truly support families and communities overseas, while promoting sustainable methods.

Choosing Organic Products The word organic has become a broadly used term in our culture today. Everything from food to gardening soil has been labeled organic. How do you know what products to trust and buy? What does organic mean? The term organic in the most generic sense simply means living or derived from living things. In this definition, a lot of products that would not be labeled “organic” are in fact made from organic material. A product labeled “organic”, however, means that the food or ingredients were grown and produced without the use of pesticides, fertilizers made from synthetic ingredients, sewage sludge, bioengineering, or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, eggs, and dairy products are raised without antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic vs Certified Organic The USDA National Organic Program has a very strict certification process that includes a 3-year land conversion process to ensure that all chemicals are removed from the soil. There are three levels of certification: 1.100% Organic Products with this label must include only organically grown ingredients (excluding salt and water). 2.Made With Organic Ingredients Products will contain at least 70% Natural Holiday Gift Guide 2011 www.naturalfamilytoday.com

Page 7

organic-grown ingredients and much list at least 3 on the front packaging. 3.Organic Ingredients Listed Products that contain less than 70% organically produced ingredients may not claim the term organic on the front package, but may list specific organic ingredients on the back. Products that are certified will display the USDA Organic seal on their packaging. When is certified bad? In certain cases, it is not always best to buy certified organic products. Sometimes local farmers are hindered by USDA regulations, as in cases with selling raw milk and small amounts of home-grown vegetables. Some of the regulations required for certified organic status raise ethical questions as well. This is most prevalent in organic dairies. Since antibiotics are not allowed, sick cows are either still milked or sold to be slaughtered rather than treated and the milk discarded until it tests free of antibiotics. Cost is another hindrance for small farmers and ranchers to become USDA certified.

Natural Holiday Gift Guide 2011 www.naturalfamilytoday.com

Page 8

Then how do I know it is safe? When dealing with local producers, the easiest way to know if their products are safe is to get to know them. Find out what practices they use, and more importantly, what they won’t do. Ask to see their animals or crops. If they are truly using organic practices they will be more than happy to prove their trustworthiness. When buying organic products, remember there are other important factors that come into play. Do your research and read the labels to make sure you are buying products that are not only organic and healthy, but also produced through ethical and sustainable practices.

Natural Wood and Cloth Toys: Earth Friendly and Kid Safe Now that your family is “going green” and making the switch to more environmentally friendly products, what is the next step? You’re using less household chemicals, recycling, conserving resources, and buying local foods, but have you thought of your child’s toys? The trend of plastic toys is still booming, but a new trend is up and coming. For natural families, more earth friendly alternatives to plastic toys are being chosen, including wood and cloth toys. Why not plastics? Plastics are difficult to recycle for several reasons. First of all, plastics must be separated according to their “grade”, making the process difficult and extremely labor intensive. Depending on your location, it can be hard to find a place that will recycle many of your plastic items. Toys are especially difficult because they often contain several grades of plastic. Not only are plastics hard to recycle, they can be highly toxic as well. Some chemicals like phthalate and parabens, which have been banned in other countries, are still contained in plastics in the United States and can have lasting affects on children such as infertility in boys and cancer. Alternatives to PVC and BPA plastics are available in the US. However, if you’re making a conscience effort to be kind to our environment and to your family’s health, it just makes more sense to go “natural”.

Natural Toys Wood and cloth toys offer a safe and natural alternative to plastic toys, and their availability for all ages is on the rise. Everything from baby rattles to sorting toys, puzzles to blocks and trains, is available in wood or cloth materials. Here are some things to watch out for. All toys with paint should clearly state that the paint is nontoxic. You should also inspect all wood toys for splinters or cracked wood, as well as all cloth toys for ripped seams or choking hazards. Read all care and safety instructions carefully. More importantly, you should do a little research into the company that you are buying from. Just because a toy says that it’s natural, cloth, or wood doesn’t mean it’s good for your family, our environment, or the world. Some things to look into: • How is the toy manufactured and where? • Is it a fair trade company? • What other toys does the company manufacture? Buying wood and cloth toys is a great opportunity to support local businesses and work at home parents. Many natural toys are made in the homes and garages of fellow natural families or within your community.

The Gift of Buying Local My heart was so touched last year by a friend who had been shopping for a Christmas tree. She was so excited when she found the perfect one and magnificent it was indeed! One thing to know about her is that she is not the type of person, when in need of something, runs down to the local big box store to make the purchase. Her excitement did not stem from just finding the most gorgeous tree, but that she found it by shopping online, for sale by someone in her own neighborhood on a website called Craigs List. She was dancing with joy that she was able to help someone in her own community and that she was able to re-purpose something so special. To be perfectly honest, after seeing the tree myself, I really don't think she would have found one brand new at the big box store made with such quality. To top it all off, she purchased her tree for a mere ten bucks!! Many people in our country believe that buying local is the road to sustainability, myself included. For a happier Christmas future, we can make purchases from locally owned businesses who also hire local people and pay taxes that benefit our communities. In doing so, we strengthen our families as well as our neighbors. We are able to contribute to revitalizing our downtown districts, where mom and pop are working hard to have their own place of business.

Personally, I much prefer knowing where my products are made and how they are being produced. The internet has become such an easy way to shop now. We can compare prices and watch for deals on items. Most companies offer free shipping as well. I think we can enjoy taking the hustle and bustle out of Christmas by shopping online. We can still give the gift of buying local by making our purchases online when we know where to look. I found a great link created by our ABC World News and researched and written by Diane Sawyer that helps us find American made products. The website is complete with a map of the U.S. where all you have to do is click on your state and it will take you right to your nearest community. You can also shop by category and featured items. It's a great place to start your search for the perfect gifts as well as strengthen your community and your country. Let's give jobs back to our neighbors and share the joy as well of a repurposed gift with others. Merry Christmas!
