GreenVale Voice Dear Friends, Behold the legacies of learning! The educational research is deep and repetitive as it states that the hard-wiring of essential attitudes and skills takes place during childhood. To that end, Green Vale is a place where • school and children’s imaginations combust; • dreams are planted and fertilized; • muscles gain memory; • goals are set and perceived limits are surpassed; • inspiration becomes expectation; • doing what is right, not what is easy, permeates the atmosphere. The cover of this issue of The Voice presents two honored leaders, women whose focused commitment over the decades has influenced thousands of young people, whose legacies are vibrant and permanent. Chery Webb humbly smiles amidst appreciative players and colleagues after winning her final field hockey game. She will retire this year after 46 years of coaching and teaching at Green Vale. Liz Putnam, Class of ’48, gazes into the eyes of the President of the United States after he awards her this country’s second highest civilian honor, the Presidential Citizens Medal, for her efforts in conservation and the establishment of the Student Conservation Association. In the pages to follow, read about Joanne Pappas, a Pre-K teacher who was honored by the Early Years Institute as the “Play Educator of the Year” for Nassau County. Learn about three teachers creating the Pacers, a club for girls in grades four through nine that combines the power of running with conversations about female health and wellness issues. Mingled with these extraordinary examples of dedicated professionals creating opportunities for learning and engagement are highlights of the fall. Whether through overt teaching, community building events, student performances, or curricular activities, Green Vale’s campus continues to exude energy and growth. Current students, parents, faculty and staff are fully committed to the process. Our increasingly involved alumni speak powerfully to the potential for success that their Green Vale education instilled in them. This continuity of teaching, learning, and accomplishment is the legacy of the Green Vale School community. The present informs the future, and what a positive future lies ahead for these students, and for Green Vale!

Appreciatively,

Young Women’s Leadership Club Is Off And Running! All Pacers Complete Knapp Memorial 5K Run The Pacers Club for girls in grades four through nine at The Green Vale School was started this year by Corinne Maron, Camissa Gallagher, and Jen Moreano, two teachers and a librarian at the School. Designed as an after-school program to develop leadership skills and prepare girls for a lifetime of healthy living, the club’s mission is to use the power of running to empower the girls with a greater sense of self-awareness and achievement. After ten weeks of working together, all 30 girls, along with assorted parents, siblings and School community members, completed the Evelyn Knapp 5K Memorial Run held at Sunken Meadow Park on Sunday, November 21. Rumored to be the toughest cross country course in New York, the hills at Sunken Meadow are difficult for even the most experienced runner. Five Green Vale runners were awarded placing medals, while the entire team was awarded honorary medals for their participation and contribution. During the school year, students are surrounded by tremendous role models on a daily basis – in classrooms and on playing fields. The Pacers had the added opportunity to meet with two very special visitors. In November, supermodel Kate Dillon (at left) spoke with the girls about her struggle with an eating disorder. With humor, warmth and candor, Kate also spoke about what it’s like to be a successful “Plus‐Size” model. Tina VanDerMeiren, Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Princeton University, also visited and worked with the club. Responsible for year‐round strength and conditioning programs for 13 Division‐I sports at Princeton, Tina shared her story about how she became a strength and conditioning coach. She also created a strength training workout for the girls utilizing Green Vale’s fitness equipment in the Blue-Gold Center. As part of Green Vale’s commitment to service learning, the Pacers held “healthy breakfast” sales this fall, raising $575. This was donated to Strength for Life, in memory of Evelyn Knapp, a co-founder of Strength for Life, a nonprofit organization that provides free exercise classes and wellness weekends for cancer patients and survivors on Long Island. “You never know how well any new idea we have for our students will work, but with the success of this program we felt empowered to share our goals and results with others in a position to enhance girls’ education,” remarked Linda Gardiner, Assistant Head. The Pacers founders and coaches, along with Linda Gardiner and Chery Webb, presented their story about the Pacers Club to a few hundred colleagues during the Educating Girls Conference held at The Chapin School in New York City, on January 3, 2011.

Class Notes ‘33 Henry C. Frick II The Alumni Office recently learned of Clay's death on February 9, 2007. He was 87. Clay was the son of Childs Frick (1883-1965), the paleontologist, and grandson of his namesake, the steel magnate Henry Clay Frick (18491919). After Green Vale, Clay graduated from St. Paul's School, Princeton University and Columbia University Medical School. After World War II he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, then went on to practice medicine as an oncologist at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital as well as a professor of clinical obstetrics at Columbia. During the 1960s, Clay voluntarily served two tours of duty in a field hospital during the Vietnam War. Clay was a trustee and president of the Board at The Frick Collection (NYC) and chairman of his aunt's Helen Clay Frick Foundation. In this later capacity he directed the restoration, according to his aunt's wishes, of the Frick family's Pittsburgh estate, Clayton. He was a trustee of the Wildlife Conservation Society and the American Museum of Natural History. He died at his home in Alpine, NJ. We extend our condolences to his family, most especially his wife Pemmy and his great-great nephew, Trevor W. Davenport '81.

Elizabeth Campbell Woodman It is with regret that we share the news of Elizabeth's death on November 26, 2010. She was 91. She graduated from Green Vale and Spence. In 1941 she married Harrison S. Woodman and while they lived in Manhattan, she attended graphic art school. They settled in Rumson, NJ where they raised their three children. She was a vibrant member of the community and will be remembered for her beautiful needlepoint, achievements on the croquet court and numerous wins at the bridge table. We extend our condolences to her family, most especially her grandDeceased

son Brook Dixon, his wife Lynn Ely Dixon '87 and great-granddaughter, Susan C. Dixon '20.

‘35 Charles G. Blaine It is with regret that we share the news of Charley's death on December 2, 2010, of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 85.

Aid Bureau; director and treasurer of the State Communities Aid Association; director and president of the Buffalo Council of World Affairs; director of the Buffalo Salvation Army, and director of Buffalo and Erie County Historical Societies. He was a member of the American Law Institute; member of the Erie County, New York State and American Bar Associations; Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the American Bar Foundation. An Episcopalian, he served as chancellor of the Diocese of Western New York from 1975 until 1991. After his retirement, he and his wife, Patricia, divided their time between Buffalo and Venice, FL, and they enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe. We extend our condolences to his family, especially his wife, children and step-children.

William P.T. Preston, Jr. After Green Vale, Charley attended Indian Mountain School and St. Paul's School. Before entering the Navy in World War II, he attended Amherst College. After the war, he earned a law degree from the University of Virginia. Charley was a great-grandson of James G. Blaine, who was defeated for the presidency in 1884 by Grover Cleveland, a Democrat from Buffalo. President Cleveland was partner in a Buffalo law firm that ultimately became Phillips Lytle – the firm where Charley was “a major force.” He joined the firm in 1948, became a partner in 1956 and was its managing partner for 14 years from 1960 to 1974. "Charley was among the most influential partners in our firm's 176-year history," recalls the current managing partner. Charley’s specialty was banking and banking regulation, but was known for mentoring younger lawyers. Charley was a longtime civic leader in Buffalo and northern New York State, serving on the College Council of Buffalo State College as well as the Buffalo Board of Education in the 1970s; a director of the Children's Aid Association; director and former president of the Legal

It is with regret that we share the news of William’s death, from complications following a stroke, on April 19, 2010. He was 85. William served as a tank gunner in some of the heaviest combat of World War II. His unit, the 743rd Tank Battalion, was in the first wave of U.S. forces that landed on Omaha Beach in France at H-Hour on June 6, 1944, going in ahead of the infantry in order to provide armored protection. Thirty-two days later, Mr. Preston, then 20, was severely wounded in the Battle of Normandy, leaving him partially paralyzed. William was an historian and activist whose book, Aliens and Dissenters (1963), helped open a new field of scholarly inquiry into government policies that repressed radicals and restricted civil liberties. From 1954 to 1970, Bill was professor of history and chairman of the history department at Denison University (OH). From 1973 until his retirement in 1988, he was chairman of the history department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan. He described the job as “a perfect fit for an engaged scholar.” Teaching civil liberties to police officers at precinct sta-

tions provided a unique opportunity to educate those on the front lines of law enforcement about constitutional history. Bill continued to write articles on the history of civil liberties after leaving John Jay, including contributing a chapter on the 1940s for the ACLU's 50th anniversary report. His Omaha Beach experience appeared in the July 14, 1994, issue of the New York Review of Books. Describing the "near catastrophe" of the day, he wrote that the events "diminished forever the credibility of the concepts of strategic planning and tactical order; [they] provided me instead with a sense of chaos, random disaster and vulnerability." We extend our condolences to his family.

‘39 Gertrude Whitney Conner It is with regret that we share the news of Gerta's death on December 13, 2009. Gerta, granddaughter of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, was an accomplished painter who specialized in dreamlike landscapes. She exhibited in a number of galleries and had a solo exhibition at the New York Studio School. She wrote and illustrated her memoir, Those Early Years, and sent a copy to Green Vale’s Coash Library in 2007. She remarked at that time, “I remember Green Vale very fondly and count classmate Leila Hadley Luce as one of my closest and oldest friends.” Gerta worked at the MOMA for many years, supported the Skowhegan School of Art and The New York Studio School. We extend our condolences to her family, most especially her beloved husband McCauley (Mac) Conner, her children, grandchildren and cousin Gloria Vanderbilt Cooper ‘39.

Gloria Vanderbilt Cooper Published in November, The World of Gloria Vanderbilt celebrates the life of the woman who has been a fashion designer, artist, actress, and philanthropist. It features a foreward written by her son, Anderson Cooper.

“I am a resident of Manchester, VT, but also have an apartment in NYC where I come when I get bored up in the Mountains. Spent my life in the publishing business but am now retired, although I continue to consult. Married twice. Divorced twice. Have 2 children -- a daughter and a son. Play lots of golf with enthusiasm, but not as much talent as enthusiasm. Travel. Go to the Post Office, etc. Every day is Saturday and that is most welcome after a long and very busy career. Thanks for keeping me up to date with the class of 1953.”

Hopefully, assuming Dusty takes my advice, you will be spared furthermore of reading the progress towards this elusive goal."

Dorothy Doubleday Massey “Checking in from Santa Fe, NM where my daughter, Mary Massey Wolf, and I are the co-owners of the Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeehouse, now in its 32nd year as Santa Fe's oldest and best independent. The store can be visited at cwbookstore.com and I hope that Green Vale alumni will stop in for a cup of organic coffee and a warm welcome when visiting Santa Fe! I have been a widow for 20 years, but blessed with Mary, her husband, and my first grandson (one year old and ready to read) in the same town. My son, Paul, runs a foundation on Kauai, dedicated to the preservation of endangered plants, so visiting him is a great treat. My memories of Green Vale are wonderful -- does anyone else remember Mrs. Parker (music)?”

William H. Miller, Jr. “You may recall that I only attended Green Vale in the 8th grade. It was a wonderful year and helped me to get into Exeter. After graduation from Princeton, I served onboard the destroyer U.S.S. Strong (DD-758). I was released from active duty in June 1963 as a Lieutenant (jg) and entered Syracuse Law School. After law school, I married Jeanie Piersol. We have two sons: Willy, who started his own construction firm, Miller Custom Homes LLC, in Crested Butte, CO, and Tom, who is a litigation attorney in Seattle. We have three wonderful grandchildren. We have lived in Norwalk, CT since 1968. I have practiced law with two firms, moving in 2001 to my current firm where all of the attorneys practice trusts, estates and residential real estate law. I have always loved athletics – sailing, tennis, hockey and skiing. I coached youth hockey for many years and played regularly in a non-checking league until age 62 when I was redshirted by a shoulder injury. As a sailor I’ve enjoyed large and small boat racing, participating in East Coast off-shore ocean races, including five Newport to Bermuda races. Jeanie and I feel fortunate to have sailed with friends in the Baltic, Canada, British Virgin Islands, Corsica, Sardinia, and Turkey. We own a condominium at Snowbird, UT where we spend as much time as possible enjoying some of the best powder skiing in the world. We also enjoy hiking in the Rockies in the summer.”

We are both engaged in a number of nonprofit boards and committees in CT, with time off for R&R in Florida during the winter and Rhode Island in August. We have spent some very pleasant time with clasmmates Charlie Lockwood and Peter Martin this year and look forward to seeing others in 2011.”

“My husband John and I have 5 grandchildren and continue to live in Santa Monica, CA. Luckily we spend time in the Adirondacks every summer which gives us a chance to see many old friends and relatives back East. For the past three years, John has been teaching in the Yale Art Gallery for 6 weeks every fall. Big news was made in Feb. 2010 when our daughter Anne and her husband Chris adopted Tiebe, a baby girl born in Ethiopia, she's 18 months old and loves living in Oakland, CA. In 2010 we enjoyed seeing fellow Green Vale graduates: Hoyt Ammidon ‘51, Ashton Hawkins ‘51, Anne Bleecker Corcos ‘53, Phyllis Polk Wells ‘53, Mimi Colgate Kirk ‘54, Charlie ‘51, Bill ’52 and Tony ’54 Hoyt, and Ted Wickersham ‘53. We recently celebrated my brother John Galston's ‘53 70th birthday, and sadly our dad died in 2009 (he was 100, still active).”

Henry S. Reeder, Jr. “My wife Susan and I enjoy watching our family continue to grow. Our three children, Wendy, Nat and Liza, are happily married and each has three children of their own. We are lucky enough to see them often. My architectural firm, ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge, (approaching its 42nd year) has flourished even during the recent hard times. ARC specializes in educational, science and technology, sports and corporate facilities. Fishing is still a passion of mine which I enjoy in Nantucket as well as in other exotic places. We have been regular visitors to the BVI and have enjoyed trips to Africa, Europe, New Zealand, Belize, Panama, and Mexico; not all in search of new fishing grounds. Recently, thanks to Philip Iglehart, I had the chance to reunite with Fred Underwood, Timmy Weld and John Righter.”

Margot Maxwell Sanderson “We have had quite a cold and snowy winter; thanks to my new 4x4, I have been able to get out. Last year we were stuck for 10 days. I vowed to put that right and have a tiny fiat panda which is great! We have lived on a farm in southern England since 1963 and have ½ a mile of farm road off back country lanes. Although only 50 miles from London it’s very rural. Jeanette McClintock Atkinson visited last year and Betsey Warriner about 40 years ago. Would love to see anyone if they get this way. I used to see Hopie as she became a sort of cousin by marriage. I haven’t been to the states for many years now. We tend to go to France or Italy as I have one son living in Rome. We had a lovely holiday this year in Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland. We checked out Hadrian’s Wall to make sure it was still keeping the Scots out. Happy New Year to all.”

Theodore S. Wickersham "With this second report in as many years I have had more connection with Green Vale than I have had since the day we graduated! In September Norma and I took a river cruise down the Danube in a trip sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute. We started at Prague (on the Moldau, not the Danube) and ended in Budapest. It was our first "senior" trip and one that I recommend to all classmates. The end of the year was highlighted by the wedding of our son, Tod, in Winter Park, FL, where his bride, Denise, has her roots. They will continue to live in Austin, TX where they are both engaged in environmental endeavors. My son, Walter, continues with the omnibus computerization of Boston University. I'm still working full time but partial retirement looks more and more inviting, and would make Norma especially happy."

Don and I have travelled to all parts of the world since our marriage 13 years ago. We have recently become birding enthusiasts and try to schedule a winter trip to warmer climes to indulge our new passion. I've been thoroughly enjoying my association through the years with my "second" school, Miss Porter's in Farmington, CT where I am a member of their Board of Trustees. I invite any 8th or 9th grade girls to come for a visit. I hope the classes of '53 and '54 will return to GVS for their 60th in a few years. The 50th was great fun!”

Between Vermont and our cottage in Ontario we hunt and fish for much of the rest. Otherwise I've spent many hours forming organizations to address social concerns through our local Interfaith Council, but lately seem to be migrating to energy and environmental issues.
