MYOCARDIUM infrastructure and housing
Partner: Troy LaCombe Fall 2015 Critic: LOT-EK The process of housing 1000 people with 10,000 mushrooms requires thinking through an environment that promotes nature to take its course in a built environment.A symbiotic relationship between dwellers and mushrooms was created based on fungi’s ability to decompose waste matter. Mushrooms and human require opposing living conditions. While people desire ample space, fresh cool air and spaces bathed in sunlight; mushrooms thrive in cramped spaces with damp temperate air. Elements of human excess become the key to inadvertently supporting the living conditions for the mushrooms. Heat and steam generated from cooking and bathing can be absorbed through air currents.

It does so by providing a flexible interface between students who took out loans and companies who seek to hire. On average, one person consumes roughly 5 lbs of food per day with 1 lb of this food being discarded into the trash. Given the fact that we are housing 1000 people, the building can collect 885 lbs of excrement and 300 lbs of plastic container waste on a daily basis. While typically all of this waste from food would go directly into sewage and landfills, all of this waste can better serve as the foundation for a mushroom farm that coexists within the building.

SLOW FACTORY a new factory typology that reuses steel
Spring 2015
Critic: David Benjamin
Today We build fast, yet we demolish faster. More than 60% of the buildings are demolished before they reach ½ of their life cycles simply because their aesthetics have become obsolete. 90% of these buildings’ steel structures are being “mistakenly recycled”, melted from debris scraps in blazing volatile zones and have caused detrimental environmental impact due to such redundant steel re-production. Time has come that we galvanize the public to demand a new steel factory typology where melting and recycling can be changed to salvaging and reusing, consequently reducing the energy intensity of the end of life cycle as it shifts from blast demolition to disassembly. The traditional linear freight rail that passes by steel furnaces will be twisted to host salvaged steel frames and wrapped around the inside of the new type.
10
11
As the public walk through different processes inside the track, from assembly robot labs to 6-story high testing space, from dark chamber to curved terrace, the new factory becomes a public interface that draws people within and creates more awareness of such an overlooked technology.

THREADED gymnasium
Fall 2014
Critic: Pep Aviles
The design proposes an iconic architecture that aims to foster the sense of community for the urban neighborhood. While it challenges the traditional idea of a pool that is only open to a selective group of private members, it also fuses together the experience of exercise, promenade, local businesses, outdoor theatre and public gathering through a dynmaic use of form and circulation.
14
15
Three major circulations organize the building. The first one is the path that wraps around the building, it acts as an thread that allows users to walk around the entire building. The second one is the interior diagonal staircase that enables mixing and layering of the different activities. The third circulation is a one-directional path that allows users to cut directly through the site and gather at the open theatre space.

DIALOGUE a public earth closet
Fall 2014
Critic: Pep Aviles
Research
The earth closet demonstrates not only a clear understanding of the ecological effect, but also establishes a humerous attitude towards the relationship between the interior and the exterior. A silent “dialogue is constructed when experienced from the inside. Such a dialogue is made possible by the use of a carefully placed seating arrangement and the one-way mirror placed in between. That is to say, viewers from the outside cannot see what happens on the inside, while the users on the inside can see through the coated glass. The uneasy feeling when using a public bathroom is therefore reduced when this sense of security is created for the users. This exercise demonstrate an ability to gather, assess, record and quantify the circumstances needed to treat waste in a public setting. The structure reflects the impact and correlation of the design to the overall form and performance of the structure in its environment. The mechanism of the toilet also exhibits a clear advantage Research over existing and common portable toilets.

The final full-scale model was fabricated and assembled by Scott and myself. This mock-up model displays all four types of the panels and how they connect to each other. To start the assembly process, we arranged individual panels with the same width in vertical arrays. Then we connected panel to panels with vertical mullions and fasten with hex nuts to secure position. Afterwards, we connected panels horizontally with rivets. Finally, we fastened the panels to horizontal armature for the exhibition.

SOCIAL CORE a credit union for students
Spring 2015
Critic: Mimi Hoang ( nARCHITECTS)
Rather than accepting the disconnection between the growth of online banking service and the need for physical banking space, this project explores new integral relationships between the work flows and social interactions in the offices above with that of the teller zone below. This flexible event space reinvents the generic hidden realm of the office space with an expanded public mission, reflecting banks’ need for greater connections with its community.
