6
European Commission Initiative Product & Corporate Environmental Footprint
• Multi-criteria measure of the environmental performance;
• Based on life cycle approach As much as possible in line with existing approaches
• Comparability shall be given priority over flexibility
• Framework for reporting requirements.
• First step to establish mandatory reporting of LCA results within the EU

Vom Projekt zum Prozess Automatisierung + Skalierung Background
● First LCA of a complete car in 1992
● Today: LCA of every new vehicle in design phase Goal
● Design for Environment ● Marketing & Communication Solution
● GaBi DfX and BOM import for efficient LCA work
● VW now optimises cost and environmental impact of cars already during product development

Einbindung Compliance und externe Kosten
Compliance There are a range of environmental product laws that companies MUST comply to sell their products around the world. If a company sells a non-compliant product they can be fined, have products removed from the market and damage their brand and reputation. The most common environmental laws relate to the use of chemicals, these are:
• RoHS – (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) which started in Europe and is also in China, Japan and Korea this controls certain heavy metals and flame retardants. • REACH – (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemical Substances) is European and applies to a very broad range of chemicals • Conflict Minerals – This requires USA companies to declare minerals mined in conflict zone in Africa

More than 400 environmental labels What is green? How do I prove that my product or company is green? If I choose one approach, will it be accepted by everyone? Do I have to prove I'm green in different ways to different clients? Will consumers and business partners understand my claim?
