Mayor orders park shut until it is properly prepared for visitors

THE City Orchard Park will not be officially launched until its problems are addressed. This came from Kuala Lumpur mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail who said City Hall would need six months to a year to get to the root of the problem. He said they would be scouting for trees and transplant them to the park. “It will only be officially opened when everything is okay.” When asked why City Hall had to re-do the park when RM17.2 million had gone to the contractor responsible for delivering a proper end product, he said it was time they learned from past mistakes. “Maybe it’s a lesson to learn. When you want to do something, you have to be

lot had to be done for it to live up to its name. “I feel very sorry because we have demonstrated we can provide a good park as seen at the recently launched Botanical Gardens. I am sure we can do something here too.” The mayor also clarified the money for the project originated from City Hall. “As the park is still within the defect liability period the contractor needs to carry out all repair works to damaged items and this includes replanting trees which are dead before fully handing it over to City Hall.” He said City Hall officers stationed at the park were already conducting monitoring and maintenance work. ● Continued on pg3

Melbourne's Crown casino crisis widens A CASINO crowd controller embroiled in a homicide investigation after the death of a patron was allegedly involved in an earlier scuffle at Crown in which another man's arm was broken, the Herald Sun reports. The security officer at the Melbourne casino had been part of the alleged altercation about a year before last week's death of Anthony Dunning. The patron's arm was allegedly broken and the crowd controller remained employed at Crown. Several bouncers who were at the scene of Dunnings' death are expected to be interviewed soon. Detectives are awaiting the results of an autopsy on Dunning, which could take weeks.

Al-Khaadem Foundation leader denies Bersih 2.0 link

— Ustaz Hussain Yee

By AIZAT SHARIF and G.PRAKASH crime@mmail.com.my

AN Islamic non-governmental organisation is rocked by allegations linking it to the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0). Al-Khaadem Foundation founder and scholar Ustaz Hussain Yee, however, has denied the claim. “Al-Khaadem Foundation is not affiliated with any political activities or movement,” Hussain told The Malay Mail yesterday. The allegation stemmed from a YouTube video depicting Hussain discussing the rally which took

place on Saturday. The Malay Mail yesterday received several calls from members of the public informing us of the video. It was discovered the video was uploaded onto the video sharing site by an organisation called "uhychannel" on July 3. Apparently, the video — We Need To Maintain The Peace In Our Country — showed Hussain giving a sermon on the Bersih 2.0 demonstration. An app e a l for donations to be banked into an

account, allegedly belonging to the Al-Khaadem Foundation, could also be seen below the video. Hussain said his foundation had never asked for donations to fund Bersih 2.0 whose legality was not known. He said his organisation only dealt with Islamic affairs and not politics. “We treat everyone the same, regardless of ethnicity, political beliefs or social status. However, this allegation can tarnish our image.” He advised the public to be careful as the allegation could spark uneasiness among

the rakyat. Bersih steering committee member Dr Wong Chin Huat thanked the people for the support received to date but urged those wanting to help them financially to first seek verification with Bersih. Wong, when met during a Press conference yesterday at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, said: “There have been fake Facebook accounts created using the Bersih 2.0 name and claiming to be collecting funds for us.” When asked if they were planning to lodge a police report or take any action

against the fake Facebook accounts, Wong said the committee was looking at ways to handle the matter, as there were also Facebook pages created by supporters. "We do have an official Facebook page called Bersih 2.0 and that is the only one we have created. Others were created by third parties," he said. "Those wishing to donate should call us to verify details and check how their donations can be channelled to us." Wong urged supporters to visit its website bersih.org for details.

DESPITE being more than 20 years old, a policy of allocating one per cent of jobs in the civil service to the disabled has been difficult to achieve. Nonetheless, the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president Datuk Omar Osman said the target was an achievable one. “If each government agency takes in about five disabled staff, that would be enough to reach the one per cent target. However, sometimes even this cannot be realised due to the unsuitability of jobs and skills,” he told The Malay Mail. Omar urged public sector agencies and departments to provide a quota for the disabled groups in terms of employment opportunities and to give priority to those who meet the criteria. Damai Disabled Persons Association of Selangor and Federal Territory president V. Murugeswaran said the policy was redundant as there was no plan to make it work. "A majority of the disabled can contribute to nation-building but it’s how the civil service wants to tap into their potential," he said.

“The policy cannot just be a statement for political mileage or for publicity's sake. There’s job promotion from the government sector from time to time but the number of disabled takers are not encouraging.” Murugeswaran said the disabled community had limitations in their physical movement and hence there was a need to create a barrier-free environment. “How can a disabled person grab the job opportunity if they’re dependent on someone to get around? The disabled must be able to work independently,” he said, adding that many disabled also faced limited skills and knowledge in securing employment. Beautiful Gate Foundation for the Disabled executive director Sia Siew Chin said the one per cent aim has not been fulfilled due to work place unsuitability and lack of qualification from the disabled. “Instead of applying for jobs, most disabled persons would rather set up a stall and avoid the hassle of travelling, although those with qualifications can get into the civil service easily.”

ABUNDANT: Fruits growing at the D-Paradise park

Fruitless labour

After six years, masterplan was completely disregarded By PEARL LEE pearl@mmail.com.my

INTO THE WILD: Ostriches and crocodiles also an attraction

IT was supposed to be a memorable experience for one man after hosting a group of City Hall officers at his fruit farm in Malacca back in 2005. A busload of officers, including then mayor Datuk Ruslin Hassan, had led a delegation of officers to DParadise Tropical Fruit World & Aboriginal Native Village to study how to set up an orchard park in the heart of the city. The owner of the orchard park in Alor Gajah, Malacca, had taken them on a oneday tour to learn more about his fruit farm, dubbed the "world's largest and renowed tropical fruit world". Six years later, the city's Taman Dusun Bandar orchard park does not even come close to its model. D-Paradise owner Datuk Lee Wah Chong told The Ma l ay Mai l y e s t e r d ay : "D-Paradise was launched in 2005 by former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah A h m a d Badawi. A month later,

LEE: Wasted my time hosting City Hall study visit in 2005

City Hall told me they had been instructed to set up an orchard park in KL." He said he was taken aback by The Paper That Cares' report on Monday highlighting the pathetic state of the RM17.2 million "fruitless" park. "When I read the report and saw the condition of the orchard park, I felt sad. I wasted my time hosting them. I feel upset as they had said they wanted my advice yet they didn't learn anything from the visit." He said he had offered to share his experience with City Hall on how to set up an orchard park similar to his and City Hall officers would get back to him, which they never did. He said it took him five years to carry out research, planning and development before the centre was officially opened. "I spent less than half a million on fruit trees and other plants for my 16.18ha fruit farm. The plants are not that expensive and easily available if you know where to find them." He said not all fruit trees were locally sourced and some were brought in from Thailand and China. Those, too, did not cost much for

his tropical fruit resort which has over 800 species of tropical fruits plants. "I spent RM25 million for my entire 50.9ha resort, including the chalets, building, animals such as deer, crocodiles, ostriches and rabbits, among others." He refuted claims by Taman Dusun Bandar contrator Zikhtar Associates Sdn Bhd that it was difficult to source for fruit trees. "You can find them at Sungai Buloh. These trees would grow well within three years." Lee said it was unusual to have an orchard farm on clay soil, although, with the right fertiliser and irrigation system, it was possible for the Taman Dusun Bandar orchard park to be successful. "However, judging from the pictures, it is clear the top soil had been removed and this could be one of the reasons why the plants are not healthy." Asked whether he was willing to provide more advice to City Hall, Lee said: "We were willing to help in the past but now, perhaps we have to consider. My advice to City Hall would be to get a farmer who is experienced in tree planting to do the job and not a degree holder who only has paper qualifications."

age works and lighting. D espite checks w hich showed most of the trees at the park were small, infected with disease and some dead, the director maintained the park had met its objectives and said tree planting was not the priority. The Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry in The Malay Mail's front

page report yesterday disclosed RM2.6 million was allocated towards the purchase and planting of trees, and from this amount, about RM1.5 million had been paid to the project contractor, contrary to the latter's earlier claim.

Most of the money spent on buildings, drainage, lighting t From pg 1 The Malay Mail, in an expose, highlighted the lack of fruit trees at the 7.7ha park despite it being due to open in two months. The project first made headlines in 2005 when the then mayor, Datuk Ruslin Hassan, announced upon completion, the park would have 100 spe-

cies of local fruits like durian, mangosteen, langsat, duku, rambai, ciku, cempedak, jackfruit, guava and banana trees, among others. On Monday, The Paper That Cares reported contractors Zikhtar Associates Sdn Bhd had revealed only RM595,000 from RM17.2 million went towards the purchase and planting of trees of which only

40 per cent comprised local fruit trees while the rest were wild fruit trees. The company had said the reason why most of the trees were wild fruit trees was because the orchard park was not an "eco-resort". A company director had said most of the money was spent on earthworks, landscaping, building works, internal drain-

YEOH: Registratioon would only serve as a temporary deterrent

Women’s groups question if Act would violate human rights By T.K. LETCHUMY TAMBOO and ANDREW SAGAYAM mmnews@mmail.com.my

MORE than a year since the Wom e n , Family and Community Development Ministry had its first meeting w it h p o l i c e t o d r aw up the proposed Sexual Offender Registration Act, the status of the Act’s creation still remains unknown. A ministry source has confirmed, however, it is set to begin discussions with police, but details such as when the talks would take place could not be furnished. Still, several women and children's welfare groups have begun debating the purpose of such an Act, and if it would impinge on human rights. Empower member Honey Tan said the creation of the Sexual Offender Registration Act alone would not halt or hold back incidences of sexual crimes. But it would be one way to keep track of

the sexual offender’s address, which would be “only a small part of the big picture”. Going hand-in-hand with the Act would be rehabilitation and counselling. "Sexual crimes happen because the perpetrator enjoys the power he has over his victims. He enjoys the ability to control his victims’ fears, to inflict pain and suffering. Sex is merely the medium through which he commits these crimes. “The government must ensure counselling and rehabilitation are carried out. Otherwise, keeping track of

sexual offenders alone will not do the job of curbing recidivism," she said. However, Tan pointed out tracking offenders’ residences and allowing the public to know where they live could be a violation of offenders’ rights. She further said the ministry should consult the Malaysian Bar and women’s groups to formulate the Act. "In the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality, there are lawyers, doctors, sociologists, psychologists and other experts who can look at the Act from different angles."

Meanwhile, All Women's Action Society programmes manager Betty Yeoh said while the proposed Act may be useful to monitor and track offenders, the question of whether it violates human rights must be addressed. "For example, what if an offender realises his wrongdoing and wants a fresh start? Being on this register may deny offenders their right to work, if potential employers check the register and deny them a job.” She said registering and monitoring perpetrators would serve as a temporary

deterrent but education and awareness were more necessary for them to change. "How would the police ensure the monitoring mechanism? Will the system be abused? The monitoring should also include counselling to enable ex-offenders to change as well as assessment of whether change has taken place.” Yeoh suggested police put more effort in ensuring sexual perpetrators are charged in court and successfully put behind bars, before talking about monitoring those released from prison.

Police to talk to ministry, women's groups POLICE would like an open discussion with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, women's groups and relevant NGOs on the formulation of the proposed Sexual Offender Registration Act. Federal CID chief Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin told The Malay Mail there were two important matters pertaining to the Act that needed to be ironed out —

human rights issues and getting the bill passed in Parliament. "Even though we support the move as the idea is excellent, we have to be aware of some points that would be brought up by certain quarters such as what will happen after the offender is released,” he said, as one is considered a free man once he has served his sentence.

He said: "On their side, convicted offenders will feel they are being singled out if their names were made to known to the public, especially since they have done time in prison for their crimes. These offenders will say this is against human rights." Bakri also pointed out that to have the Act approved, it must first be brought up in Parliament.

"We need to draft a bill first and only when it is passed by Parliament, will it become an Act and part of statute law." When asked how the monitoring system would be carried out should the Act be approved, he said the police would manage that when the time came. "When it becomes an Act, everyone who wanted the Act to be in place must also help the police.”

Govt must have more women decision makers By FAIZAL NOR IZHAM mmnews@mmail.com.my

THE government should take the lead in promoting women to decision-making roles and the private sector would naturally follow suit. This was the response of the Federation of Public Listed Companies (FPLC) on the recent announcement made by Prime Minister D at u k S e r i Najib Razak t h at wom e n should take up 30 per cent of top corporate positions by 2016. FPLC's president

Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas said there ought to be more high-ranking females in government-linked companies by next year. Megat Najmuddin said presently, 70 per cent of university applicants are women, which means in the next five years there should be an increase in highly-educated working women. "More than half of our doctors, engineers, lawyers and accountants are women. This was unthinkable in previous generations.” Cooperative Commission of Malaysia director Abdullah Mahmood said he is fully supportive of the govern-

OMAR: Women are patient and thorough

ment's plan. "This is good to hear as I believe women are just as capable as men in terms of educational standards and ability." He cited current Bank

Negara governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz as a prime example, whom he says is one of the most qualified economists and is more than capable of managing monetary policy. "Women are often diligent and trustworthy," he said. "In my opinion, they should increase the number of top positions to 40 per cent or not even have a limit at all." Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president Datuk Omar Osman agrees women should be allowed further opportunities but is uncertain if the move would apply to the govern-

ment sector for now. "The corporate world is more appealing anyway because it is far more lucrative." However, he would like to see future change in this regard as long as women continue to prove their ability. "If we wish to progress as a nation, we need to see change at some point. In the meantime, we will need to review how able and motivated women are." He said women are ideal for such roles as they are patient, thorough and contemplative by nature. "They can offer a reasonable and insightful perspective on things that men may not always provide."

PPR rent defaulters not poor, they simply refuse to pay for anything By T.K. LETCHUMY TAMBOO t.k.letchumy@mmail.com.my

A MAJORITY of residents living in the People's Housing Project (PPR) homes in the city, who fail to pay rental, are not poor. Instead, they are just indifferent and plain stubborn. This was told to The Malay Mail by City Hall housing management director Sukiman Surahman. Sukiman said of the 52,914 families renting PPR units, 41,029 were defaulters and out of the total number of defaulters, only 20 per cent can be categorised as hardcore poor. "The other 80 per cent can afford the rent, but instead they are just stubborn. They know there is a monthly rent to be paid but they just can't be bothered," he said. Sukiman got a shock when he recently visited PPR Kampung Muhibbah in Puchong and found many residents lived in comfort and yet failed to pay their monthly

dues to City Hall (see accompanying story). "There's nothing free in this world. The residents have to change their mindsets and start paying rent accordingly. If they face problems in paying their rent, they could always talk to us and we could work out an appropriate payment plan for them." City Hall, he said, identified 2,000 PPR units in the hands of hardcore poor as of April this year. "The people who live in these units are usually those unemployed, have children with little furniture and with no financial assistance from any source. "We have also identified other families in the poor category. These families receive some form of financial help," he said. "As of April, we identified 1,600 PPR units with people who receive financial assistance from Baitulmal as well

SUKIMAN: Only 20 per cent defaulters are hardcore poor

as 600 unit occupants who receive financial assistance from the Social Welfare Department." Sukiman said when encountering such families, City Hall usually advised them on their next course of action.

"When I was doing my rounds at PPR Taman Mulia, I encountered a family of 10 living in a unit. Both parents were jobless. Their eight young non-school going children stayed at home. "This family owes City Hall RM8,000 in rent. We referred them to several bodies. Yayasan Wilayah now sponsors their children to school, the Social Welfare Department gives them some form of monetary aid to carry on with their lives. Baitulmal helped them with their rent," he said. Sukiman said plans are afoot to group the 2000 units of hardcore poor families for transfer into one separate PPR area. "This will make it easier for the government to monitor them. Probably, we can get companies to help them as part of their corporate social responsibility programme."

48' flat screen TVs ... but they don't pay rent CITY HALL housing management director Sukiman Surahman was taken aback when he visited PPR Kampung Muhibbah in Puchong. "I visited a family which owes City Hall about RM17,000 in rent after not paying for more than 10 years. "I felt something amiss upon entering the hall of the house which contained a 48-inch flat screen television. "Then upon entering a room, I saw another 36-inch flat screen television set. The house also had a three-door refrigerator. "I went to another unit which owes us RM11,000 in rent. Can you imagine that?" Sukiman said when he asked the families why they failed to pay their dues for so long, they told him they were not aware of such payments. "They told me when they first moved into their respective units, they were told by some politicians in the area that they were there for free. After explaining there was no such thing as "free", the families agreed to pay their dues.

Pay up or risk having water supply cut BEGINNING this month, PPR residents who have been issued with yellow coloured "Bil Peringatan" or reminder bills, but do nothing about it, might face water cuts or may have their units locked up by City Hall. Its housing management director, Sukiman Surahman,

said the action was to nip the problem of unpaid rent in the bud. "All this while we only served notices or seizure bills in red. "The reminder bills, on the other hand, are issued to units owing us more than six months rent. Since we have

so far taken no action against them, many residents opt not to pay rent. "So, we will serve notice of seizure and water cuts to those who receive reminder bills if they do not pay their rent," he said. Sukiman said implementation of the newly introduced

door-to-door billing system for PPR units had gone smoothly. "Up till May, we served a total of 36,185 bills to PPR units in the city. Out of that, 6,608 bills are the 'Bil Tunggakan Rampasan' which is the final bill in red." In May, The Malay Mail reported PPR residents who

owe City Hall RM51 million in unpaid dues have started to settle it. Sukiman credited the success to their door-to-door billing system introduced in February. In March, their rent collection was 94 per cent, the highest recorded. The billing system involves

new type of bills in four different colours — white, yellow, orange and red — to indicate a resident’s payment status. Once the final red bill is ignored for 14 days, notices of seizure or water cuts will be issued under the Public Housing By-Laws 2000 or based on their tenancy agreement.

Internet fashion wonder KUALA LUMPUR

Persistence and perseverance helped his online business become successful

SINGAPOREAN Jaz Lai graduated with a degree in fashion. “My whole family is in the fashion industry, so you could say I was born into the design world,” he said. He initially pursued design work in London and eventually returned to Singapore where he opened five retail shops. Unfortunately, traditional entrepreneurship put Jaz S$180,000 (RM450,000) in debt. “Asia’s economy suffered a downturn and it was the worst time to have a business. Besides, I had other issues about being in retail business. “I worked seven days a week with no time for anything else." Jaz t hen he ard ab out Internet marketing from a friend and the idea about building a business online

intrigued him. "I wouldn’t have to worry about inventory or managing staff. "Also, having a retail shop meant I could sell only within my area. But once I went online, I didn’t have these problems at all. From home, I could reach the world immediately and with ease." With no computer knowledge, Jaz decided to give the Internet business a try and for the first two years, he struggled. After experimenting with many methods and strategies, the only result he got after two years was a S$28.73 cheque. Jaz was on the verge of giving up until someone told him he was not giving all the methods he tried enough time to work. So he decided to try list building and email marketing, collecting databases of subscribers' contacts and

staying focused on generating a huge subscriber list. As a result, his monthly income increased until he hit the fivefigure mark. With the extra

Jaz spoke of his "FCP" philosophy, his unique creation which stands for Focus, Consistency and Perseverance and said you must believe you can attain success. "With any business, you must have

a plan and put effort into it daily." For the past seven years, Jaz has practised what he preaches and has seen the benefits with his Internet business. He is no longer in debt and has been able to travel around

the world at least six times annually. For the past three years, Jaz has started to share and teach his system of building a successful Internet business internationally. Jaz has been hailed as one of Asia’s biggest Internet marketing celebrities, which, as he mentioned, was fame he did not expect. “There are days when I just go out to socialise and someone will approach me asking if I’m the Internet marketer, Jaz Lai." One of the biggest "Aha" moments came when Jaz sent out a promotional email to his list of customers that generated more than S$10,000 in sales in less than 24 hours. “The one thing I like about having an Internet business, is the fact the Internet is open 24 hours. Factory bus jam They are parked outside apartments all day, says resident

LIVING in Taman Bukit Cheras Apartments, MARGARET CELINE has to endure a legion of factory buses parked outside all day, everyday, causing traffic congestion. They are parked along the road surrounding the apartments, leading to a bottleneck at both corners. This also results in accidents at the T-junction in front of the apartment entrance as the buses obstruct motorists from entering and leaving. "The traffic problem is relentless," the 59-year-old housewife complains to Hotline. Sometimes, not only buses park on both sides of the road but taxis, too, she says. MARGARET says motorcycle accidents are commonplace as the haphazard parking results in a sharp turn into the entrance road, causing them to skid offcourse. "We have to really slow down when driving into the road to see where we're going, and traffic builds up behind. I almost had an accident when I came back from church last Saturday night." The bus operators only leave when they ferry factory workers from the neighbouring Ceria Heights hostel to and from work in Sungai Way at 7am and 5pm. "Other than that, they're

always there," she says. MARGARET says she and her husband have asked the operators several times not to park there but they always refuse and respond rudely to them. She is appalled by their total lack of civic-mindedness. "The authorities should designate a proper bus stand in a more convenient location," she says, adding that in front of the hostel would be ideal. MARGARET says the bus drivers also tend to drive recklessly, resulting in the pavements being damaged. She says there should be a speed limit. "The signage here is inadequate. Sometimes, motorists enter our apartment area, not realising it leads to a dead end. This worsens traffic as they try to turn back into the road." Occasionally, the bus operators also occupy the residents' parking lots. "We have written to our Member of Parliament requesting the road to be widened and more parking space," she says. There has been no response yet.

The Putrajaya resident says his monthly phone bill is between RM150 and RM200 but his June bill was RM445, including voice and data usage. Car delivered just in time for wedding R. LOGANATHAN of Ipoh was overjoyed his daughter was getting married. So happy, in fact, he booked her a new Honda Civic on May 30 as a wedding gift. However, he soon learned the car may not come in time for his daughter's wedding. LOGANATHAN claims the car salesman had promised to deliver the car within three weeks to a month, upon approval of the bank loan, which was done within a week. “Since I needed the car ur-

gently as my daughter's wedding was scheduled for July 10, I made several calls to have the car delivered by July

5 latest," he says. However, he was informed by the Honda sales manager the car could only be deliv-

ered on July 19. "Why does it take so long deliver the car?" asks LOGANATHAN.

● HONDA Malaysia Sdn

However, Jordhatt explains it is stated in the booking form, which LOGANATHAN signed and acknowledged, the delivery of the vehicle will be made in the middle of July. "This was agreed upon by the customer and the sales personnel. We have contact-

ed and clarified this matter with the customer." When contacted, LOGANATHAN confirms a representative from Honda Malaysia had contacted him and explained the matter. He says the car was delivered to him on July 7.

Bhd public relations officer Jordhatt Johan tells Hotline it conducted an internal investigation pertaining to the late delivery of the vehicle. He confirms LOGANATHAN did book a vehicle with their dealer.

Stopped watch Faulty timepiece from warehouse sale

AU YEONG MUN KEAT is unhappy over a purchase he made at a recent warehouse sale. On June 24, the 48year-old bought a timepiece at the FJ Benjamin warehouse clearance sale at Parkroyal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. He paid RM386.70 for the watch after a 70 per cent discount. The timepiece did not come with a battery, which was not a problem.

Three days later, AU YEONG, of Seri Kembangan, brought the watch to the FJ Benjamin Timepiece Service Centre in Lorong P. Ramlee to be fitted with a battery. While testing the watch, he found that its stopwatch function was not working. "FJ Benjamin shouldn't sell something that is faulty, even though it was a warehouse clearance sale," he says.

"I left the watch at the shop for it to be repaired and was told it will take three weeks to a month. What if it spoils again after the repair?" AU YEONG wants a replacement or a refund.

"It will be ready for collection by July 15. The complainant is satisfied with the arrangement." When contacted, AU YEONG says he will collect the watch on July 15.

But the bank told me I've been charged RM91.74 for service, in-

Online Hotline comments www.mmail.com.my Crime-busting residents (July 12) ● SAYS resident KEN HO, 30: "Ever since we set up the association, we have taken safety matters into our own hands after our reports to the police and City Hall proved unfruitful." That says it all. We pay income tax which is then used to pay for, among other things, the police and army. What we have here is taxation without representation. — Anonymous Hospital stay covered by policy (July 12) ● THIS is typical of insurance companies, to delay responding to queries regarding any claims or compensations made by the insured. They will take their own sweet time or will wait until the customer makes noise or reports them to the media, before they actually do something constructive. Like in NABILA's case, the company said they have emailed NABILA after being informed by Hotline. These insurance companies expect us to pay our premiums on time but they are not equally efficient in responding to claims and queries. This frustrates the insured even more. — Shaktiman In a fix over FD date (July 12) ● CREDITING interest manually? LOL! Is this a bank or an Ah Long? — Rahim Feeling hot over faulty car air-cond (July 12) ● SIX times and they want to do more investigation? Just replace the whole thing, lah! You will have a happy customer and you won't end up losing money every time she brings the car in. — Anonymous Issued summons despite leaving (July 12) ● WHEN you have committed a crime but are not caught, does it mean the crime has not been committed? In this case, you broke the law. And just because you think you got away with it, it doesn't mean you were not caught breaking it. Kudos to the policewoman for not letting you get away. — Unbelievable ● KUDOS to the police for acting correctly. If you can't afford to pay at a proper carpark, then get a motorbike. Or maybe next time when you park your car at a proper carpark, tell the operator to give you a discount, since you never got out of your car. — lee chong wei ● PLEASE pay up before you are slapped with an extra summons for complaining. — Anonymous Parking nightmare (July 7) ● CITY HALL should be more considerate when issuing summonses to vehicles parked along both sides of the roads in Brickfields as these vehicles don't inconvenience other road users. City Hall knows there is no ample parking in Brickfields, yet they issue summonses daily there. Some areas in Taman Tasik Permaisuri have vehicles parking at 'No parking' signs, along yellow lines, around corners, U-turns and even in yellow boxes, yet I have never seen any police or City Hall officers issuing summonses there. Why is City Hall practising double standards on illegal parking? Until the multi-storey carpark is built, City Hall should be instructed to not act against parked vehicles which do not obstruct traffic in Brickfields. — Shaktiman ● People have no choice but to park on yellow lines? What does that mean? Everyone has a choice — park five streets away and walk, it won't kill them! And from the photo, anyone can see that by parking there, they have turned the street from two-way to one-way ... there isn't enough room there to park and for people to drive in the same lane. — Eina

Netball needs overhaul

KL Malaysian sports

TIME and again in the past two Netb a l l World Cup Championships, our national team has the distinction of finishing 16 out of 16 competing teams. Our women have become the so-called losers and wooden spoonists because the European, African and Carribean teams are in a league of their own as they have all earned their honours at their respective regional and international meets. Being an avid sports fan, I have been following the national team’s exploits ever since Trinidad and Tobago coach Enid Browne was roped in as the national coach to prepare our squad for the KL’98 16th Commonwealth Games in our national capital 13 years ago. I had the opportunity to watch the top four teams in the world, namely Jamaica, England, New Zealand and Australia, in action at the National Indoor Stadium in Singapore on July 10. The finals between the

Aussies and the Kiwis was nerve-wrecking as the women went neck-and-neck in points in the last quarter to force the match into extra time. In the finals, umpired by two men, the spirited Australians edged the dismayed New Zealanders 58-57 in the last few seconds. As Malaysians, we can learn a lot of skills such as agility, flexibility, passing, scoring and defence from these champions. The best way would be to hire a foreign coach from Australia and New Zealand to take charge of the national senior and junior development teams, respectively. This way, we can acquire the best of both worlds where our future players will be developed and trained like champions. The national team is usually composed of best players from the national meet and Malaysia Games (Sukma) who will in turn undergo cen-

tralised training for about month before heading off for the Commonwealth, Asian or World Cup tournaments. In my opinión as a sports teacher for the past 24 years in seven schools in four districts in Negri Sembilan, the team selectors should also rope in the top three high jumpers from each State from the girls’ Under-15 and Under-18 age groups. Following in the footsteps of the six time SEA Games champions women’s basketball team, the chief coach should teach these high jumpers the netball skills and only then pick the best 12 for the national team alongside the specialised netball players who are already well-versed in the skills and rules of the sport. The netball officials always talk about physical disadvantage where the Europeans and Africans are taller and bigger in size. It is unacceptable as the

PJ Seat belts in buses (July 4)

Make it a habit, start small THERE are two things all mothers always tell their children: don't smoke and wear the seat belts. Sadly, both warnings don't last long. The children might heed the call when they are young but once in their teens, it is like they have a mind of their own. Before you know it, there is a small rebellion going on in your house. Now, back to the seat belt in buses suggestion ... as a mother, I have to agree to the idea. And again, as a mother, I would suggest to the authorities, in this instance the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), to start small. Don't make it compulsory

WHEN The Paper That Cares reported that the government is mulling the idea of installing seat belts on buses, I jumped in happiness. However, when I read further and found out that it was going to be implemented and made compulsory only by 2015, my

across the board for all buses at once. Why don't we start with school buses first? After all, shouldn't school buses be supposed to have the same safety features as other vehicles? What we see on the road now are commercial vehicles, mainly small vans, being turned into school buses. Since these vehicles are meant at first to carry products and not people, the safety features are at a bare minimum. Worse, most designated school buses do not have seat belts, and those that do never encourage the children to wear them. I have spoken to many parents on this and we felt that seat belts on school buses should be made

Implement it now heart sank with sadness. My question is, why wait? Get it into effect now, for safety's sake. The road casualties have been increasing over the years. It is sad because any one of the statistics could be a family member. By all means, please imple-

mandatory. Maybe, Miros can do a study on this and see how safe it is for seat belts to be installed on school buses. Furthermore, by making it mandatory, we can inculcate the habit of wearing seat belts from young. Once this has become a habit, the implementation of seat belts on other buses will be much easier. By then, we already have a whole lot of people who are already used to the idea. To sum it up, let's start small and make it a habit first before we implement

small-sized Japanese sportsmen, have been tried and tested as well as excelled in football, swimming, gymnastics, volleyball, athletics and baseball. Finally, the just-concluded 2011 World Cup saw the venue filled to the brim where most of the fans were family members and friends of players from England, Wales, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, who paid rather expensive flight tickets to get the opportunity to have a glimpse of the matches live with their children and grandchildren, even infants below one year of age. Sadly, the locals were uninterested as only their school children came in scores as team cheerleaders, meet volunteers and spectators. RS Singam Seremban

Not a good idea

ment it now. In fact, fine the transport companies that fail to compl. In my opinion, fixing seat belts on buses is important because they carry more people than cars.

IN the end, it is people with the right frame of mind and not the insane ones who should be driving our buses, be it intercity, express and even school buses. What we have now are drivers who have a tendency to push their luck and compromise the safety of their passengers. Safety should start with the managements of bus companies, who should maintain high standards in the business. It should not be just all about profit. Three generations after Merdeka, we still have people who don't learn anything. Many wait for something bad to happen before they act. By then, it is just damage control. I don't know how long this will continue. The suggestion to install seat belts on buses is an easy way out for the authorities to tackle the problem of deaths caused by accidents. They should know by now it is not foolproof.

SPAD can make it happen earlier DEAR Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chief operating officer Azhar Ahmad, thank you for supporting the idea of installating seat belts on buses and your call for it be done by 2015.

Since you are the COO of SPAD, you can make this happen even before the said date. Currently, SPAD has a permit re-registration process going on. Why don't you use your prerogative as COO and make the instal-

lation of seat belts a requirement for permit owners who wish to receive/ keep their bus operations permit, as well as for drivers to receive/ keep their commercial vehicle operator's permit? You can also make it clear that

bus operators must phase out old vehicles that do not comply with the structural and safety regulations within, say five years. Moaz Yusuf Ahmad TRANSIT

KL Unneccessary hassle (July 11)

No more guessing game CAN we have a pre-set date for our upcoming general election? Why all this guessing game right now? It seems unnecessary and gives the ruling government an advantage. Let us be seen to be fair here. No one should be favoured. Level the playing field. In fact, why not let the people know the date years earlier? It will be good for our democracy that we strive for so much. And who shall we decide to be our representative? The person should be someone who serves the constituents sincerely and be able to effectively deliver. It doesn't matter if the person can't attend weddings or funerals but the person

has to be someone who cares and and is passionate with his job. The person must also be well-mannered, tidy and able to speak effectively in Parliament and get things done. Don't simply make noise in Parliament but offer constuctive suggestions for the good and welfare of the nation. The person must also be trustworthy, not rude, but a gentleman. He or she must also be honest and incorruptible, of strong character. To me, anyone who does not meet these standards need not stand for election as the person will most likely be rejected. PASSENGERS are being kept in the dark about the safety of Tiger Airways by aviation officials keen to protect the airline's reputation, the Herald Sun reports. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority refuses to release a full list of its safety concerns with Tiger, saying the commercial interests of the airline outweigh public interest in issues it has raised with the grounded airline. CASA yesterday rejected a Herald Sun request under Freedom of Information for access to safety matters raised with the carrier.

Was Charlene set up? THE father of Monaco's new princess Charlene Wittstock has been forced to deny that her state marriage to Prince Albert was a sham, the Daily Mail reports. Mike Wittstock was reacting to a series of reports that have swept the world since claims surfaced that his daughter had tried to flee days before the wedding. The South African salesman hit out at rumours that the former Olympic swimmer, 33, had struck a deal with the monarch, 53, to provide him with an heir and then divorce.

11 milion people in Africa imperilled by drought and fighting THE United Nations said yesterday it was struggling to keep up with an exodus of hungry Somali refugees and many emaciated children were dying of malnutrition along the way or after arriving in neighbouring countries. More than 11 million people in the Horn of Africa now need assistance to survive the crisis sparked by the worst drought in decades, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said. Since the start of July alone, more than 11,000 people also fleeing intensified fighting in Somalia have arrived in Ethiopia and more than 8,600 in Kenya, the UN refugee agency said. German award under fire over choice of Putin SENIOR members of Germany's coalition criticised an independent awards committee yesterday for deciding to give Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin (pic) a prize standing for freedom and democratic change. Government human rights commissioner Markus Loening said the choice undermined the "Quadriga" award, which will be handed out on the Oct 3 national holiday celebrating German unification in 1990, and others questioned Putin's democratic credentials. "It is downright cynical to award Putin the Quadriga prize and put him in the same group with Mikhail G or b a che v and Va cl av Havel," Loening, a member of the Free Democrats who rule with Merkel's conservatives, told Der Spiegel magazine's online edition. "It devalues the prize." Former S oviet leader Gorbachev and former Czech President Havel are among previous winners of the award. A 48-YEAR-OLD Californian woman was arrested for drugging her estranged husband's dinner then cutting off his penis, saying he "deserved it," police said yesterday. In an incident recalling the infamous 1993 case of John Wayne Bobbitt, who had his penis reattached after a similar event, Catherine Becker was booked for poisoning and assault with a deadly weapon after she tied her husband to the bed Monday in Garden Grove, southeast of Los Angeles. The woman, who was in the process of divorcing her 51-year-old husband, called 911 to declare a medical emergency after throwing his severed member in the garbage disposal, said police spokesman Jeff Nightengale.

"Officers arrived and located a male victim tied to the bed and bleeding from his groin area," he said. "The female, identified as his wife, had used an unknown type poison and/ or drug in the male's food to make him sleepy. "She tied him to the bed and as he woke the female cut off his penis with a knife. The female tossed the penis in the garbage disposal and turned the disposal to the 'On' position." Despite that, pieces of the severed member were recovered and taken to hospital, although it was not known if surgeons would be able to reattach them. After arriving at the scene police untied the man, and seized a rope and 10-inch kitchen knife as evidence. "The

initial investigation determined that the two are married and going through a divorce," said Nightengale said. The woman, who was also booked for aggravated mayhem, false imprisonment, and spousal abuse, was being kept in custody in lieu of US$1 million bail, he added. The man, whose named was not released, underwent emergency surgery and was listed in serious condition. In the infamous 1993 incident, Bobbitt had his penis cut off by his wife Lorena, who drove away and threw away the member from a moving car. It was recovered and sewn back on, and Bobbitt subsequently became a porn movie actor on the back of his misfortune. — AFP

lifestyle 15 RELEVANT: Students get first-hand information from lecturers who are long-serving industrial experts

Welcome to the 'real world university' UNIVERSITI Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK) was established on Dec 18, 1997 as one of the first private universities in Malaysia. Named after Malaysia’s second prime minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak, UNIRAZAK is committed to becoming a principal centre of education in innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship. The Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) was established to meet the increasing demand for qualified and capable information technology (IT) personnel in the growing IT industry. Reports on the regional trends in human capital requirements for the IT industry in Malaysia indicate that there is an acute shortage of personnel, especially in areas such as systems and software development, computer forensics and investigation, and information security management. Also, FIT recognises the tremendous growth of e-business applications and online transactions as well as the fast adoption of wireless communication devices as part of daily gadgets. The common things that need to go along with all these are information security, protection, cryptography and internet security technology to protect users’ privacy. Computer security threats and the acts for prevention are now becoming a concern not only by organisations but also individuals. In response, FIT offers a multitude of relevant undergraduate IT programmes to cater for different needs of the IT industry. It is the interest of FIT to produce graduates with quality substance and first-hand information from computer

experts who are lecturers with profound academic degrees or long-serving industrial experts. Programmes are developed with collaborative input from industrial experts of reputable government or corporate agencies and relevant stakeholders. The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) programme provides an advanced course structure and industrial-related specialisations in Computer Forensics, Information Science, Computer Networking, Multimedia, Medical Informatics and Software Engineering. The uniqueness about UNIRAZAK’s BIT programme is that the body of knowledge delivered is a blend between academic essentialities and industrial practices. This enables students to expose themselves to scientific information technologies and methodologies, and learn how they are applied to solve real world IT industry problems. When complete, graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills to embark into a successful IT career or become IT entrepreneurs. At UNIRAZAK, FIT aims to produce quality graduates in IT disciplines through various programmes from diplomas to a PhD degree. At the undergraduate level, FIT offers Diploma in Information Technology, Diploma in Computer Security, Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Computer Security, Bachelor of Information Systems, Bachelor of Science (Accounting Information Systems) and Bachelor of Software Engineering. For more information on UNIRAZAK’s programmes, visit http://www.unirazak.edu.my, call 03-76277000 or email to marketing@unirazak.edu.my

By CHE'AZ cheaz@mmail.com.my AS musicians, they are like chalk and cheese. One is known for her brand of pop music which is laced with heavy R&B, hip hop and dance background, while the other is a rock star who is known for his indie-flavoured music with the attitude to go with it. Each also has a distinct public persona that stands strong individually. Love however, has managed to unite Shazrina Tan Sri Azman (alter ego Mizz Nina) and Hujan lead singer Noh (full name Noh Salleh) in holy matrimony. In fact, when they announced their engagement, many were rather surprised as they'd managed to even keep their relationship away from the public's eye for quite a while. It is written in the stars, so to speak. Last week, the two officially became husband and wife. The akad nikah ceremony was held, followed by a reception attended only by family members. That was followed by yet another grand reception which was graced by faces of the industry as well as members of the media. Before the third reception, held at the grand ballroom of Doubletree Hilton KL, wedding enthusiasts were speculating on the theme the two would choose.

The only hint was the invitation card itself which was designed like a folded kimono. Aha! And yes, if your guess is Japanese, you are right on the money. Now, this concept is basically rather rare for typical Malaysian Malay couples who might have chosen the traditional Malay wedding or the more conventional white wedding. Alas, Noh and Mizz Nina are far from typical. Yes, their wedding reception was lavish, and yet, there was a rather whimsical and playful feel to it, like you just stepped into a wonderland of sort. It was one of those receptions that might not escape your mind for quite a bit. It was colourful indeed, and did we mention rich? Oh yes, it was definitely one of the richest weddings ever. Not in terms of size but the overall concept itself. The melding of the Malay wedding with a Japanese feel and backdrop was executed brilliantly. It might have made the Mawi-Ekin wedding in Taib Andak looked so, err, rushed. Kudos to the creative decor team, Eddy by Favors, that managed to transform the grand ballroom of Doubletree Hilton KL into an amusing (and amazing) Japanese garden, complete with Cherry Blossoms that looked like they were flown in straight from the country of origin! The Malay-Japanese fusion was executed beautifully (and tastefully, too). Noh and Mizz Nina looked stunning and elegant in their bridal couture exclusively created by Michael Ong. They looked reslplendent as the walked down the aisle accompanied by Japanese traditional instrument — the taiko (drums) and the sakuhachi (flute). The entrance was grand enough as they passed through a Japanese arch. When they

sat on the dais, the two looked majestic. In fact, those who are so used to seeing the two in action on stage might just not recognise them at all. Apparently, the whole idea and concept were from the couple themselves who are fascinated with the Land of the

The menu also followed the Malay-Japanese theme. Among the guests that night were rock stars Ella and Faizal Tahir, M. Earlier, at the akad nikah ceremony, Noh presented Mizz Nina with seven trays consisting of the sirih junjung, mas

So we thought about blending two cultures and creating a Malay-Japanese wedding. The reception is a way for us to be with the media and celebrity friends who have supported us from the beginning of our careers. “The Japanese theme is a fun way for us to loosen the whole ceremony and make it more relax and laid-back. We especially love our wedding outfits. They look like kimonos that still have strong Malay flavours. Songket is generously used and I think Noh looked dashing wearing

kahwin, a jewellery set, a unit of iPad2 and a traditional Sarawak cake. He also presented her with a duit hantaran of RM11,111.11. Mizz Nina reciprocated by presenting him seven trays comprising a sirih junjung, a pair of shoes, a wallet, wedding outfit, chocolates, a wedding band and a unit of Playbook.

At the Malay-Japanese reception, the guests were treated to a montage of videos that showed Noh and Mizz Nina in various candid shots which told the story of their courtship that led to the wedding. The wedding singers that evening were fellow performers Altimet and Sore, an Indonesian band. The private reception that

Low blood pressure: Is there cause for concern? IT was late Sunday evening and I had just finished giving a talk on hypertension. The audience was general public, so the talk was the not too technical. A man in his late forties stood up to pose me a question. “Why is my blood pressure always low? Is it dangerous?” I have spoken many times on the subject of high blood pressure and even shared with my readers no less than five times in the Heart2Heart columns on this subject, but I have never really dwelled on the subject of low blood pressure. It is an interesting area and that question has prompted me to write on this subject this week.

SUDOKU

there will be a drop in blood pressure. Whilst there is a well known threshold blood pressure level for hypertension, there isn’t really one for low blood pressure or hypotension. In general, a blood pressure level of below 90/60mmHg is considBy DR HAIZAL HARON KAMAR ered low. Having said that, there are instances where a lifestyle@mmail.com.my reading below this can be considered normal. This will What is low blood presbe discussed shortly. sure? Blood pressure is the force How does low blood presexerted by circulating blood sure happen? on the walls of arteries. It There is reduced blood is also dependent on the flow in the arteries if there response of the arteries to is less blood being pumped the flow of blood (known with each heart beat. This as arterial resistance). If the could be due to either low force or the resistance to blood volume — as in acute blood flow is reduced, then blood loss or severe dehydration — or weak pumping motion of the heart — as SUDOKU in heart failure. If the heart beat becomes slow such as in atrial fibrillation or complete (electrical) heart block, the overall cardiac output will also be reduced thereby lowering the blood pressure. Usually the body will compensate by increasing the resistance in the blood vessels and thus normalising the blood pressure. Conditions that can cause low arterial resistance include severe sepsis (infec-

tion in the blood circulation) and medications such as nitrates. What are the symptoms of hypotension? For blood to circulate around the body, it needs sufficient pressure to be exerted by the heart. If the pressure is too low, some organs will not get enough oxygen and nutrients and symptoms will occur. For instance, if not enough blood reaches the brain, you will get dizzy and if severe, you may even faint. If lack of blood goes to the kidneys then you will be passing low volume of urine and run the risk of and getting kidney failure. The skin is the biggest organ of the body. If the blood pressure is too low, the reduced blood flow to the skin will cause your skin to feel cold. Is hypotension dangerous? In short, yes. In severe cases, also termed as ‘shock’, there will be irreversible damage to the organs in the body and can lead to death if not treated promptly. How do I know if my blood pressure is too low? I get asked this question a fair number of times. Many individuals have pressure

around 90/60mmHg or lower but are perfectly fine with no symptoms. However, they get told how low their pressure is by every doctor they meet and some do get quite worried. In this case, I would assess it by symptoms present and also prior blood pressure recordings. If the blood pressure readings have always been ‘low’ without any symptoms, then I would assume that the apparent low blood pressure reading is a normal finding. However, if previous clinic readings have been in the normal range or even high, then a current low blood pressure recording is a cause for concern, especially if there are accompanying symptoms. This is why I would like to stress again the importance of regular visits to your doctor so that you will know what your baseline pressure level is and if there is any change over time. What tests can be done to detect the cause? If your doctor feels that your blood pressure is abnormally low, he or she will want to investigate the cause and there are various tests that can be done. An ECG can give useful information such as presence of significant coronary heart

disease or heart rhythm problem. Blood tests can indicate conditions such severe anaemia due to blood loss, severe sepsis and certain hormonal diseases which can all cause hypotension. An echocardiogram will be able to tell if the heart is weak. What is the treatment for low blood pressure? It really depends on the cause. If it is blood loss or dehydration, then replacing body fluids by intravenous means should be promptly instituted. If the heart is too slow, then a pacemaker will help to keep your heart beating at or above a minimum specified rate to prevent any symptoms. If there is severe sepsis, the rehydration and antibiotics will help. If there is heart failure, especially in acute cases, certain drugs such as intravenous infusion of dopamine and adrenaline can bring the pressure up. QUESTION

Diabetes and heart disease Dear Dr Haizal,

HOW TO PLAY

YESTERDAY'S SOLUTION

Sudoku X is a simple variation of Sudoku with the only difference being the squares in white (which make up the numeral X) need to tally from 1 to 9 along with the remaining coloured squares.

My father has had diabetes for over five years and I was told by a doctor friend that having diabetes is like already having heart disease. I still don’t quite understand what he means by this. Is this true? Should I be worried? I would be grateful for your explanation. Thank you. Ramli Dear Ramli, Coronary artery disease (CAD) develops with the formation of atherosclerotic plaque on the wall of the coronary arteries. This atherosclerotic process develops very early in life and gets more promi-

nent when a person reaches middle age. Diabetes accelerates this process many times over and can lead to early CAD and premature death. CAD and diabetes are therefore very closely related. A person with diabetes is at a significantly higher risk of getting CAD compared to someone without diabetes. In women and men, the risks are increased by two-fold and three-fold respectively. Blood vessel complications, especially at macrovascular (big vessel) level such as CAD, stroke and peripheral vascular disease are very common, accounting for up to 80 per cent of deaths in type 2 diabetics (non-insulin dependent type). There have been several large studies comparing the

magnitude of coronary risk associated with diabetes, namely type 2 diabetes, and that associated with a history of cardiovascular events (heart attack and stroke). They found that the diabetics in the study with no history of cardiovascular events had a number of fatal heart attacks as high as that in non-diabetic patients with a history of previous heart attack. Such is the impact of diabetes on the incidence of CAD that since the widely known third US-based National Cholesterol Education Program – Adult Treatment Panel (NCEP-ATP III), released in 2001, diabetes has been regarded as CAD risk-equivalent. This means that if you have diabetes, then the risk of getting a heart attack is

the same as someone who is already known to have CAD. With this is mind, anyone with diabetes is regarded as having high risk of getting heart attack. Management of the diabetes and also any other risk factors such as blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels will need to be very aggressive. The target levels are also lower and stricter. For instance, the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level, also known as “the bad cholesterol” can be allowed to be as high as 4.2mmol/L for a person with no risk factors for CAD but if you have diabetes, the LDL level should not exceed 2.6mmol/L - the same as someone with known CAD. The goal post shifts when you have diabetes.

A LOSS of form and the influx of new t a l e nt i nt o t h e n at i on a l t e a m led to national archer Mohd Kaharuddin Ashah making the switch from the recurve to the compound category. He does not regret going back into the "woods" instead of remaining in the recurve category, a more glamour event due to its Olympic status. He feels he has been given a second chance in archery and winning gold in the Asian Grand Prix in Taipeh last year was the icing on the cake. The Kuchingborn, the fifth child among 10 sib-

KUALA LUMPUR

THE nightmare of being left out of an international sports carnival is now a thing of the past for national women's squash player Siti Munirah Jusoh. Last year, she suffered the ignominious fate of not being selected for either the New Delhi Commonwealth Games or the Asian Games. She wants to experience the camaraderie, the atmosphere and the high octane competition that is synonymous with an international sports carnival again. "I was very disappointed and felt bitter as I was unceremoniously dumped," said Siti, a mass communication student at UPM. "That is history now. I want to focus and play my best squash to be in the reckoning for future international sports carnivals." She w i l l c omp e te i n t he Malaysian Open scheduled for the end of the month. However, she will have to play in the qualifiers before advancing to the main draw. It will be her second attempt to move into the championship

proper and she is confident this time around. She made the National Closed Championship quarterfinals last week, only to lose to world No.1 Nicol David, the eventual champion. "I also lost to her at the same stage of the championship last year. I am working very hard to rectify my shortcomings. "My overall weakness lies in my attacking shots. My match temperament is also not consistent." However, thus far, she is satisfied with her international squash outings which have included the Indian Challenger, Mi l licent O p en and S out h Adelaide Open.

In the meantime, she just wants to improve on her national ranking of No. 4 and world ranking of No. 47. But ultimately, her ambition is to compete in an international sports carnival.

lings, said all he wants is to continue with archery. His interest has not waned after seven years. "I realised my time in recurve archery was over when my performances in international championships took a dive in 2008. "My displays were also not impressive in the local circuits. On the other hand, the new lads introduced to the national team were improving by leaps and bounds. "For that reason, I decided to make the switch and it has paid off. However, there is still room for improvement," said the final year UPM student. He has represented Malaysia in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, the Asian circuits and the World Archery Championships. However, the Sea Games remains close to his heart as he has made three previous appearances and won only a bronze in the team event in Manila. Last Sunday, Kaharuddin won three silver medals and a bronze to confirm his name in the Sea games team at the National circuit second-leg in Alor Setar. SHAH ALAM

The Singaporean dilemma Kim Swee's boys set to ply their trade down south

IMAGINE waking up one morning only to find a brand new Aston Martin Virage Coupe in your garage. The sleek lines, posh interior and powerful engine could probably excite you more than Lady Gaga doing the pole dance. But the road tax will cost a bomb and the fuel it consumes will be 10 times more than your Perodua Viva. So should you celebrate, as you now have a machine that does 0-100km/h in 4.6s? Or should you curse the fact you can't even afford the monthly installment let alone a new tyre — forcing it to be a decoration piece in your house. That was exactly how the Press felt at Wisma FAM yesterday. The FA of Malaysia (FAM) and the FA of Singapore (FAS) signed an agreement which will see both teams collaborate in the future. It includes more international friendlies between

Most importantly, Ong Kim Swee's (pic) Harimau Muda A lads will play in the S-League while the "Young Lions" will play in the Super League from 2012 to 2015. It was supposed to be a celebrated occasion — but it left most, including the Singapore Press, feeling skeptical. YANDY FC and Car n Co YT had a once-ina-lifetime opportunity yesterday. Both teams brushed shoulders with several stars of Arsenal FC. The two teams were the finalists of the Gunners Challenge KL with Car n Co YT showing their opponents no mercy by winning 3-0. "This is our first time winning something and it couldn't have come at a better time," said winning captain Wan Mohd Khaizul. "We came here to just try our luck and to win it in front of our Gunners heroes is a bonus and makes the win that much sweeter." Khaizul's team played under the watchful eyes of Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere. The duo gave the team advice and were seen celebrating with

the Car n Co YT boys at the end of the match. "It was an amazing experience. Especially being an Arsenal fan. They advised us how to approach the game and at half-time they told us that we can win this if we stayed composed," he said. Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and Alex Song, who pl aye d tutors to Yandy FC, were disappointed to have lost the friendly duel with Walcott and Wilshere. That should not be a reason." So will FAS cater to our schedule since Kim Swee's team will be involved in three pre-Olympic matches next year (Feb 5, 22 and March 14)? "They are appreciative of this fact and will draw the schedule around our international commitments." FAS president Zainuddin Nordin revealed the Young Lions are not so

young after all. "The core players will be from the Young Lions but will be beefed up with several seniors and foreigners. We will try to field as many local players as possible." So is bringing Harimau Muda A to Singapore a marketing strategy to attract more fans to flock the venues in the Republic? "You are right in a way. We

Theo just wants to have fun ARSENAL are set to continue with their idealogy of football when they take on Malaysia today — which is to enjoy the game. Known for showcasing beautiful football, the English club's Theo Walcott (pic) admitted he wants to enjoy himself while taking on our Tigers but also conceded that he hates the annual pre-season routine. "There is a lot of running and travelling. T he mo st i nt e re s t i ng thing about it (pre-season) is seeing who has put on some extra calories," joked Walcott. His view was also shared by Jack Wilshere, Wojciech Szczesny and Alex Song. The trio were also present as they attended the Gunners' Challenge KL at Mid Valley yesterday.

The 5-a-side tournament was organised by Arsenal's shirt sponsor to encourage youth participation in the game. "It is good to see a tournament like this being held. The young boys seem happy to play and show enthusiasm for the game. "It is important for them to enjoy football. Who knows, maybe they might get spotted in such tournaments," added Walcott. The 22-year-old England star also recalled the time when he was spotted by scouts in a similar event many years back. He reasoned that the football fraternity must not only look out for young talent but give them the exposure and opportunity to showcase their ability. Walcott is glad Arsenal manger Arsene Wenger has that philosophy. Walcott and his fellow clubmates will take on a Malaysian selection at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil today at 8.45pm.

Refs to get their due

REFEREES officiating M-League matches will be better taken care of as the FA of Malaysia (FAM) will implement several new changes starting with this year's Malaysia Cup. Mailsport had in their article "Men in black see red" published last Thursday, revealed some referees have not received their salaries since April this year. "We discussed the matter and agreed in principle that there will be a 50 per cent increment to their allowances," said FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah. "We will also pay them in advance starting with the Malaysia Cup this year. So once the referees are confirmed for a particular match, they will be paid ahead so that they don't need to fork out their own money." There are also plans to scout for sponsors for the men in black. Insiders claim financial issue was the cause of the delay as FAM have apparently only received "10 per cent of the sponsorship money from Astro" as both parties continue to deliberate over the contents of the contract. FAM took over the task of paying the referees last year after several States, including Pahang and Sarawak, failed to pay the men in black in 2009. Referees committee chairman Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz confirmed FAM are in the midst of paying the referees for the months of April and May. Meanwhile, the exco also decided the format of the league will remain next season, while there will be further changes in 2013. Pahang and Perlis will be relegated to the Premier League next year while PKNS and Sarawak will play in the Super League. "I call it improvisation. There will be changes naturally but it all depends on the facilities and finances of the teams. This is done with good intentions," said Tengku Abdullah. The competition committee also decided to allow teams to field two foreign players next season — adhering to strict criteria. The number of teams could be reduced to 12 or 10 teams for the 2013 season, pending the next exco meeting which could be held in December.

Just another Day SANDWICH: GOLF/ BRITISH OPEN

Confident Australian working it out for himself By MUSTAPHA KAMARUDDIN moose@mmail.com.my

AUSTRALIAN Jason Day (pic) relished the challenge of working out the secrets of Royal St George's by himself as he prepared for the British Open this morning. The 23-year-old, runnerup at the Masters and then last month's US Open, battled strong winds and rain during his first practice round for what will only be his fifth Major. "It was tough, it's the first time I've had a look at it," Day, tipped to become Australia's first Major champion since Geoff Ogilvy at the 2006 US Open, said at the back of the 18th green after completing his first practice round. "The course is very tough with the wind. I was chatting to some of the guys out there about the normal direction for the wind. I tried to get the best lines out there but wherever the wind comes from I'll just

try and play accordingly." Despite his inexperience on links courses, Day has resisted any temptation to seek advice from the likes of fellowAustralian Greg Norman, who won the Open at Sandwich in 1993. Already world No. 8, he has more than enough confidence in what he is doing. "No..I'm boring!" joked the former world junior champion. "I've not had much preparation on the links at all really. "I've always tried to work things out for myself...I've not asked for much advice on the range, not asked about links golf. I'll learn it myself. "The smart thing to do would have been to come over here early and play 18 with no one around. As it is I've got two days and I'll try to make the best of it. From what I've seen though, this is a real

tough test of golf." Day said Rory McIlroy was leading the new generation but believes there are many more young guns now capable of challenging for Majors -- himself included. "It's a good feeling coming here and having people talk about me, it's obviously a good

thing," he said after signing a series of autographs. "My life has changed a bit now since the Masters and the US Open. A lot more people recognise me now...obviously it's a sign of where my golf game is going right now." Can he take the Claret Jug on Sunday, though? "It's a very thin line between winning a tournament and missing the cut, especially over here playing links golf," Day replied. "You need a few lucky bounces here and there but I'll try and keep myself in contention on the leaderboard and we'll see what happens on Sunday afternoon." He said Sandwich was a completely different challenge to Augusta or the Congressional where he trailed in behind McIlroy. "Here you could hit a great shot and have the ball kick into the rough....you have to

stay patient and not get down on yourself because you could swing it great all day and card a terrible score," he said. "But it's a great honour to be competing here. Not many guys get the chance to play in the British Open. It's pretty special and a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to it." Along with McIlroy Day is one of the new kids on the block and believes there is a growing band of players ready to muscle the senior pros out of the way. "I think with Tiger being hurt on the sidelines, the older guys are still performing but there are a lot of good young golfers starting to step up now which is good. "Rory is leading that group but I think in the next three or four years we will see a lot more coming through. And hopefully I'll be one of them." — Reuters

Rory raring to go RORY MCILROY clocked in for work this morning for the first time since his stunning win in the US Open and admitted that his life had changed forever. Prior to events at Congressional Country Club last month, the 22-year-old Ulsterman was one of several great young hopes emerging in the golf world. Following his eight-stroke demolition of the field he has become a golfing superstar, evoking memories of Tiger Woods in the immediate aftermath of his runaway 1997 Masters triumph. "I didn't realise how much of a fuss it would create or how much of a buzz," said McIlroy who only arrived at Royal St George's, the venue for the 140th British Open, this morning having played nine holes with his father at Royal County Down yesterday. "I've already sort of noticed over the past three weeks it has been a bit of a lifechanging experience, and it's just something I'm going to have to deal with." Dealing with it so far has meant some heavy celebrations back home in Holywood near Belfast, a high-profile

visit to Wimbledon where he spoke with Andy Murray and took in the men's final, and more recently back to golf practice. S ome, li ke McIlroy's Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie, have questioned his decision to take the three weeks off between the two national Opens and not play any competitive golf. But the world No. 4 says that should he fail to make it back-to-back Open wins this week, it won't be down to the manner of his preparations. "I mean, I've prepared the exact same way that I've prepared for the last few Major championships, and I feel it's a process that works for me, coming to the course the week before, getting a couple of practise rounds in, and then not really getting to the course until Tuesday afternoon," he said. "That works for me. I used to do it to sort of keep under the radar. I'm not sure I'll be able to do that anymore. But it works for me. "It might not work for other people, but I feel as if it's the best way for me to approach a tournament." — AFP

Summer break over for Sharapova WIMBLEDON finalist Maria Sharapova (below) will be among some of the stars — including French Open champion Li Na and world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki — to headline at this year's Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. The tall Russian went on a summer vacation after coming in second at the All England Club earlier this month and is raring to get back into action. "Vacation over and back on the courts! I had a great little vacation and it was just the perfect amount of time because I was really itching to get back to work," she said on her Facebook page. Sharapova, who was stunned by Czech Petra Kvitova in the women's Wimbledon final, has twice won the US$2.05 million (RM6.2m) Tokyo event, which begins on Sept 25. Sharapova and Danish rival Wozniacki, the defending champion, will fly to Japan early to take part in charity events in support of the victims of the deadly earthquake and tsunami on March 11. Organisers said children would be invited from disasterhit Fukushima Prefecture, where a power plant suffered a nuclear meltdown after being crushed by the tsunami wave. Looking further ahead, Sharapova, currently ranked No. 5 in the world, will open next year's campaign with January's Brisbane International, which was upgraded by the WTA to premier status for 2012, to warm up for the Australian Open. — Agencies

Die Nationalelf coach Neid wants out GERMANY coach Silvia Neid said she will consider stepping down following her team's shock quarterfinal exit from the women's World Cup. "Right now I need some time off. In a couple of weeks when I've got myself back into everyday life I'll ask myself — what do I really want? Can I motivate myself to take part in the European tournament in two years' time? And then I'll find the answer," she told German daily newspaper Bild. The 47-year-old said she was deeply disappointed by her team's defeat when Japan scored a goal in extratime to book a semifinal place against Sweden tomorrow, wrecking the Germans' bid to win a third-straight World Cup title. Asked whether she should resign, Neid said: "One can ask the question. But it's my employer, the German Football Federation (DFB), and myself who will decide". Neid, who coached Germany to their 2007 World Cup win in China, has come in for some criticism here after captain Birgit Prinz and star winger Fatmire Bajramaj were hardly used in the tournament as both struggled for form. — AFP

JAPAN coach Norio Sasaki has said memories of the earthquake-tsunami which devastated his country in March is helping motivate his players ahead of tomorrow's semifinal against Sweden at the women's World Cup. Japan are in the last four for the first time in their history following Sunday's shock 1-0 quarterfinal win over Germany and they now face the Swedes in Frankfurt for a place in Sunday's final. Before the Germany game, Sasaki showed his team images of the devastation in north-east Japan, hit hardest by the tsunami and earthquake on March 11, and midfielder Aya Miyama said the players were all moved by what they saw. "We've seen these pictures ever y day since March 11 and it touched something deep in our souls to see those pictures again before the game," she admitted. Sasaki said his players want to beat Sweden to face either the USA or France in the final to give something back to Japan. "We showed the slides before the Germany match to bring some mental stability and heart to the players," he said, but he will not use them

again before the semi and hopes his team's exploits will inspire people back home. The football team's success has knocked baseball and sumo off the back pages of Japanese newspapers and captain Homare Sawa said the victory over Germany had spured the team to want to go further. "The win over Germany was huge for our self-esteem. It is just about resting now

and getting the body into shape, no more motivation is needed," said the 32-yearold. "This is the biggest result for the Japanese team in history. "As players, there is nothing much we can do for Japan, but we want to do as well as we can to help our country." After each World Cup game, the Japanese unfurl a

banner to show their appreciation for the support their country has received after the disaster and Sasaki said his players want to play well by way of saying thank you. "We are so grateful for the support," he said. "We want to give something back to Japan on the pitch now." Sweden beat Australia 3-1 on Sunday to reach the last four and with only a few days

rest between games, Sasaki said it now comes down to who wants to reach the final the most. " Swe d e n pl aye d a day later than Japan so both teams are playing under tough conditions, we are tired, but we won't be more tired than Sweden," he said. "The one who wants to reach the final the most will win it, it is a mental thing now and that is what will make the difference. "I believe in my players and if they play like they did against Germany in order to bring hope to Japan, it will be a very good match." Having reached the semifinals of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, but f i n i s h i n g fourth after losing the playoff to Germany, Sas a k i s ays his team have toughened mentally. "We reached the semifinals in Beijing, but only finished fourth, the other three teams really wanted to get the gold, but the Japanese were just happy to be there," he said. "It's not enough to just be glad to have reached the semifinals. "The players have said they want more and we'll see tomorrow just how much they want to reach the final." — AFP

He can also play as an attacking midfielder behind the attacker. But it would almost amount to a small miracle for us to get him."

Brazil will beat Ecuador, says Ganso BRAZIL'S attacking midfielder Ganso is certain they will emerge victorious against Ecuador in their last Group B match at Estadio Mario Kempes tomorrow (8.45am). The champions take on Ecuador under intense pressure, having been held to draws in their first two matches by Venezuela and Paraguay.

Despite the criticism Brazil have been the subject of, Ganso is confident his side will take the full three points against the Ecuadorians. "I am sure on Wednesday (tomorrow) we will improve our performance to claim a great victory," said Ganso. The Santos star understands the disappointment of the

FERNANDO GAGO. This underrated defensive midfielder from Real Madrid was one of the heroes as troubled Argentina blanked Costa Rica 3-0 in their last Group A match at Estadio Mario Kempes yesterday. The 25-year-old, who used to sport stylish long hair before this just like former Argentine star Fernando Redondo, was given the chance to prove his worth in the starting 11 for the first time and he did not disappoint under-fire coach Sergio Batista. It was a grand show from Gago in the middle of the park as he assisted the team to victory finally and a place in the last eight as he took over the role played by Inter Milan's Esteban Cambiasso, who started in the first two matches. For the record, Argentina were earlier held to a 1-1 draw by Bolivia and 0-0 by Colombia and needed to win this match for a place in the next round. The home fans loved what they saw in Gago, who was in the thick of the action to help the strikeforce split

open the stubborn and disciplined Costa Rican defence. He was surely quicker compared to the 30-year-old Cambiasso. It was from his initiative which resulted in the allimportant, and seemingly, elusive first goal just before half-time. This was when he volleyed an attempt which was blocked by Costa Rica goalkeeper Leonel Moreira but deflected off defender Francisco Calvo into the path of Sergio "Kun" Aguero, who coolly slotted home. Argentina had missed

three or four good chances before this goal when Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain failed to connect a couple of through passes by Lionel Messi, who was in his element and named Man-ofthe-Match. Messi was the architect for the other two goals scored by Aguero (his second) and Angel Di Maria. The fans were shouting "Gago! Gago!" after the first goal and this proved to be the end of the fighting Costa Ricans, who needed at least a draw to make the last eight. Gago had not been playing much for Real last season under manager Jose Mourinho. But he did not look "rusty" like Higuain who also missed much of last season because of injury. Higuain, playing as a central striker, was excellent in running into space yesterday but his finishing was a letdown. Aguero to trouble the Costa Ricans. This is not surprising though, as the three had been teammates since they were kids. Together, they also won the 2005 Under-20 World Cup in Rotterdam. Gago is a literature and art lover and the first thing he did after landing in Spain to join Real in 2007 from Boca Juniors was visit the Museo del Prado. He is reportedly engaged to professional tennis player Gisela Dulko, 26, who is ranked 39th in the world and has won four ATP titles. Dulko, who specialises more in doubles, won the Australian Open this year partnering Flavia Pennetta. Gago, after the splendid show against Costa Roca, is set to start again for Argentina in the quarterfinals. Something must be wrong with Batista if this is not the case.

Messi messes up Costa Rica COSTA RICA coach Ricardo La Volpe was disappointed by the convincing 3-0 defeat by Argentina in their last Group A encounter match at Estadio Mario Kempes yesterday and highlighted the return to form of Lionel Messi as a key reason for their failure to get something from the game. "When Messi is inspired, however much you try to cover him you cannot. We tried to compete across the pitch, but we didn't have the ball and you cannot defend a result without possession," said La Volpe. With three points, Costa Rica will now have to wait for Groups B and C to finish to see if they can earn a place in the last eight as one of two best third-placed teams. Relieved Argentina coach Sergio Batista also singled out his star for the win. "Messi played a fantastic game," he said. "We talked a lot about the emotional and individual state of the team before the match. We needed to regain our confidence. Messi knows how to overcome these situations, he has great character." Batista also commented on the tactical changes he made before this crucial match where he made four changes to the side that earlier drew against Bolivia and Colombia. Fernando Gago, Sergio "Kun" Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria started the match instead of Esteban Cambiasso, Ever Banega, Carlos Tevez and Ezequiel Lavezzi. "We sought more penetration and bodies in attack," said Batista. "I have always had a strong view on how football should be played, but I am not too proud to change. We are always looking for the best for this team." Argentina will now look to Group C to find out who their quarterfinal rivals will be, with the runners-up of that group earning the right to play the hosts.

Great Scott! Chelsea want Parker

CHELSEA are lining up a shock bid to bring Scott Parker back to Stamford Bridge as emergency cover for Michael Essien. The West Ham midfielder has already signalled his intention to quit the relegated Hammers to keep alive his England prospects, and his former club are believed to have made an approach. Parker is already familiar with new manager Andre Villas-Boas, who was working under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea during the midfielder’s unsuccessful spell at the club in 2004-05. And it’s thought the Portuguese boss wants to bring in the influential Hammers captain to fill in for Essien, who’s been ruled out for up to six months after undergoing a knee operation.

Baggies to break bank WEST BROM head coach Roy Hodgson (pic) admits he may finally need to spend to bring in his next batch of transfer targets. Hodgson has signed defenders Gareth McAuley and Billy Jones from Ipswich and Preston on Bosman transfers. Midfielder Zoltan Gera is also expected to sign provided he proves his fitness following ankle surgery, after his Fulham contract expired last month. But Hodgson knows he will have to splash the cash if potential targets such as keepers Robert Green (West Ham) and Ben Foster (Birmingham), plus Reading striker Shane Long, are to be signed up.

Potters agree Cole fee

STOKE CITY have agreed a fee with West Ham United, believed to be an initial £4m (RM19.3m) with a possible further £2m (RM9.6m) in add-ons, for striker Carlton Cole. The 27-year-old England international is currently in Switzerland with the Hammers squad for preseason training but is set to hold talks with Stoke manager Tony Pulis upon his return. The Potters chairman, Peter Coates, told Sky Sports News: "We have agreed terms with West Ham, that's done. Now it's a case of can we agree terms with Carlton?" Cole joined West Ham from Chelsea in July 2006 and has scored 42 goals in 165 appearances. But he found the net just five times in the Premier League last season and is now poised to move on following the Hammers' relegation.

Real boss still need another goalscorer for squad

REAL MADRID manager Jose Mourinho says he is content with his squad after the summer arrivals of Nuri Sahin, Hamit Altintop, Fabio Coentrao, Raphael Varane and Jose Callejon but believes they still need to bring in a new striker ahead of the coming season. Mourinho is now away on a pre-season tour with Real in the United States, having recently returned from his

holidays. "I'm happy with the squad, especially when you think we're still missing Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria (now with Argentina at the Copa America), who are very important to us," he told the club's website. "It's fantastic to have more than 90 per cent of the team you want by mid-July because it allows you to work in a different manner."

Mourinho said Real are building a side both for the present and the future. "It isn't easy to sign for Real because we have a very good squad and we earned important results last season," he said. "We won one title (the Copa del Rey) and nothing more. We have decided to improve on, and balance out, the squad without losing track of having to come up with a team for the

future — Coentrao is 23, one year younger than Callejon. Sahin is even younger and Varane is an 18-year-old kid. "We never want to sidetrack from building a team for years to come that has large room for improvement and progress. We signed men we thought were important to improve on a squad that were already very good — this squad has 10 years ahead of it."

Nevertheless, Mourinho is keen to add a top striker to the side this summer. "I, like everyone else, believe we need another striker," he said. Real have been strongly tipped to sign Brazil striker Neymar in the current transfer window, with Argentina strikers Sergio "Kun" Aguero and Carlos Tevez also linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu.

Spanish league backs rules curbing financial excess S PA I N ' S p r o f e s s i o n a l football league (LFP) has approved rules designed to control spending by clubs in the country's top two divisions and stop them accumulating unsustainable debts. Club officials backed the proposals, which are in line with Uefa regulations that begin to come into force next season, at an assembly in Madrid this morning, the LFP said in a statement on their website (www.lfp.es). Under the new rules, to be introduced over a period of three years, the LFP would establish a committee of independent professionals

to analyse accounts and recommend possible sanctions for transgressors. These could include docking of points or the withdrawal of licences for the worst offenders. " We are n ot i m mu n e from the wider economy," LFP president Jose Luis Astiazaran was quoted as saying in local media. "The current situation means we the clubs must regulate ourselves. "This is a journey that starts now and ends in three years, with the aim of striking a balance between revenue and spending, regulated with the creation of a

control department. "The wish is to foment more financial discipline and rationality and we will try to encourage clubs to operate taking their own capacity into account." Many Spanish clubs have overspent on players and wages in recent years in an attempt to compete with richer rivals and try to preserve their place in the top two divisions. The situation has been exacerbated by the practice of negotiating contracts with TV companies individually, which means around half the pot of revenue goes to Real Madrid and Barcelona,

the world's two richest clubs by income. Racing Santander became the latest side to seek protection from creditors last week, joining fellow La Liga clubs Real Mallorca and Real Zaragoza as well as all three teams promoted to the first division at the end of last season — Real Betis, Rayo Vallecano and Granada — in administration. A study by an accounting professor at Barcelona University published last month showed the 20 clubs in the top flight made a combined net loss of some €100 million (RM424.1m) in the year to the end of June

2010, up from €19 million in the year-earlier period. Total debt fell slightly from the previous year, to €3.43 billion, but was still more than double revenue of €1.61 billion. A separate study published yesterday showed second-tier sides made a combined net loss of around €43.1 million in the 2009-10 season and total debt was more than €550 million. More than half of the 22 teams were in administration and their total income of just under €170 million was only a 10th of the revenue in the top flight. — Reuters

Warner: I may return for 'unfinished business'

FORMER Fifa vice president Jack Warner, who quit football administration last month amid bribery allegations, said he would consider returning to the game to deal with "unfinished business". Warner, who for 21 years was president of Concacaf, the body for North and Central America and the Caribbean, quit in June after he had been suspended pending a Fifa investigation

into claims he helped facilitate bribes. The a l legat ions b eing probed by Fifa suggested Trinidadian Warner acted on behalf of Qatari Mohamed bin Hammam, who was a candidate for president of Fifa. B ot h War ner and bin Hammam have denied any wrongdoing and Fifa said Warner's resignation meant they no longer had any juris-

diction to investigate him. In comments reported by the Trinidad Guardian this morning, Warner said he would consider a return to Fifa politics. "I will not say no because you can never tell what the future holds. There are some unfinished business which I will have to finish in both Fifa and Concacaf at the appropriate time and who knows I may go back,"

he said. Warner, who was on Fifa's executive since 1983 also headed Trinidad's football federation in the past, said no one in his country had his experience of the international body. "The only expert on the Fifa in this country is me and in the fullness of time I will tell this country what Fifa are and what Fifa are not," he said.

Fifa's Ethics Committee will hold a hearing with bin Hammam into the allegations on July 22. The body have interviewed a number of members of the Caribbean Football Union regarding the allegations that federations were given cash gifts by the Qatari who was hoping to defeat Sepp Blatter and become the top man in world football. — Reuters

UK paper questions Arsenal’s friendly

By HARESH DEOL haresh@mmail.com.my FA of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah was unperturbed after a United Kingdom newspaper questioned Arsenal’s move of playing an exhibition match in Malaysia, which is engulfed by match-fixing scandals. “I’ve got no comments on such an accusation. I don’t know why such a thing was written in the first place,” said Tengku Abdullah at Wisma FAM yesterday. “They (Arsenal) are here for an exhibition match. Let’s enjoy the match tomorrow (tonight).” The article, by Guardian UK, quoted author of The Fix Declan Hill as saying Arsenal’s tour to Malaysia and China puts them at the heart of a region where match-fixing is a problem, running big risks for their own reputation. “China, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand are match-fixing capitals” Hill was quoted in the article. “If I were the head of Arsenal security I would want to keep a very close eye on any of my players meeting gamblers or fixers there.” The article mentions two coaches of high-profile teams have been arrested or charged under anticorruption legislation for match-fixing. It is unclear who the two coaches of the high-profile teams that were referred too are. Singaporean bookie Rajendran Kurusamy, former T-Team President’s Cup coach Sufian Ngah and former Negri Sembilan President’s Cup coach Yusarman Yusof were charged with match-fixing last month. All three, however, pleaded not guilty. The President’s Cup is an Under-21 tournament which is part of the Malaysian League. The Malaysian team take on Arsenal at National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tonight (kick-off 8.45pm).

Tevez agent waits on City over Corinthians move

I’M NOT CRYING, I’M IN ARGENTINA: Tevez smiles and waves to fans during a training session — AFPpic

CARLOS TEVEZ’S agent says a move for the striker to join Brazilian club Corinthians from English Premier League side Manchester City “will not be simple”. Last week Argentina forward Tevez, currently playing for his country in the Copa America, confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in football when he said he had to leave England in order to be closer to his children, despite leading City to FA Cup glory and Champions League qualification last season. Tevez, 27, arrived in English football at West Ham from Corinthians in August 2006 and the Brazilian side are reported to have tabled a £40 million (RM193.2m) offer for their former player yesterday. Selling Tevez to Corinthians would enable City to offload him to a club with whom they are not in direct competition, either domestically or in Europe, whilst allowing the player to be nearer his daughters, who

live with his estranged partner in Buenos Aires. But both Britain’s Press Association and Sky Sports reported City had rejected the offer, although there was no confirmation from the club. Earlier, Kia Joorabchian, Tevez’s agent, told Sky Sports: “It is a big deal and a tough deal, because it is one of a very big nature and it might not be simple. “We wait to see. First and foremost we have to respect that City have to make a formal answer. “If they do accept, then everyone will be running to make it happen. If they don’t we will have to see what other options would be available for him.” Tevez, in an interview last week, spoke of his fondness for City and insisted his desire to move had been fuelled solely by his personal circumstances. “He did mention that he has a lot of respect for City, the fans and the owners,” said Joorabchian. “But unfortunately his wife and daughters have not been able to adapt. “They have lived in Manchester for just over four years and last year they found it very hard. “In fact, they returned back to Argentina and the commute and the situation was very difficult for Carlos from a family and personal perspective. “I think he decided that he

would like to move somewhere where his wife and two daughters would move with him, and where they would find it easier to adapt, whether that was in Europe or somewhere else. “Now with Corinthians coming in with this offer, it is a very attractive proposition for the family.” As for hints from Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, the Spanish giants may make a bid to sign Tevez, Joorabchian responded by saying: “It is very difficult to start speculating — the reality is that Corinthians have made an offer. “We have never spoken to Real Madrid and they have made no offer. Corinthians have and at the moment we have to see what City will feel and what their reaction will be to that offer. “We will take every step as it comes.” Tevez, in an interview with Britain’s Daily Mail last week, said: “I have great respect for the club (City). “I hope that the people understand the difficult circumstances I have been living under the past 12 months, in regards to my family. “Living without my children in Manchester has been incredibly challenging for me. “Everything I do, I do for my daughters, Katie and Florencia. I need to be closer to them and to spend more time with them.” — AFP
