FOR just RM1, a person can find out if he or she is crazy or not. The government has made it very easy for one to undergo mental health screening at government clinics nationwide.

Just walk into any of the 637 participating government clinics throughout the country and state your intention. A walk-in patient’s mental state would be assessed based on a set of questionnaires compiled by the Health Ministry.

Doctors at these clinics will conduct the question-and-answer session on the spot.

If the doctor finds you to be mentally unstable, you will be referred to hospitals for a full psychiatric assessment. Another RM5 will be charged for it.

However, despite the mental health screening service kicking off in June, no one has undergone the exercise, seemingly because of the lack of awareness.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai expressed concern on the expected increase in the number of poor mental health sufferers. The ministry wants more Malaysians to go for the test, he said.

“We believe there are many people who are suffering from poor mental health. We fear the figures could increase if no pre-

THE Foreign Ministry is looking at possible legal action against Burundian peacekeepers responsible for the shooting death of a BernamaTV cameraman in Somalia on Sept 2, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.

Strata titles change to help building owners THE Ministry of Housing and Local Government and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will amend the Strata Title Act 1985 and the Building and Common Property Act 2007 to protect the interests of strata property owners.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said the amendment to the existing housing Act was to compel developers to apply for building strata titles within six months after the sales and purchase (S&P) agreement

"The amendment also enables the strata title to be obtained by the house purchaser together with all purchase documents including the certificate of fitness for occupation (CFO).

"The price is RM10 for both hands, which takes roughly 20 minutes for me to complete the designs," she told The Malay Mail.

She said she has always been interested in carving designs from a young age.

"I often leave the customer to decide what patterns they want," she said.

Row over festival stalls Refusal to move and threat to revoke licences mar City Hall enforcement in Brickfields

AN argument between several Deepavali stall operators in Brickfields and a KL City Hall (DBKL) enforcement officer who threatened to revoke their licences and seize their goods led to enforcement action being called off yesterday.

This "war in Little India" happened about noon in Jalan Tun Sambanthan.

The arrival of a police patrol car calmed matters down, with City Hall officers agreeing to halt their enforcement action for the time being, pending a meeting among City Hall, the stall operators and the Indian Petty Traders Association Kuala Lumpur.

Association president Jothy Appalasamy said they would appoint several marshals from among their members to help blind pedestrians move around in the area.

Because of the problems caused by the Deepavali stalls, which are said to be obstructing the movements of the visually-handicapped, the stalls may be moved elsewhere from next year, said an official from the Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Ministry (see accompanying report).

City Hall had begun its enforcement action at 10am yesterday near the Public Bank branch in Jalan Tun Sambanthan. It had progressed well with the stall operators removing their furniture and goods from the tactile walkway under the supervision of City Hall officers and association representatives.

However, at about noon, several stall operators refused

to budge and when a City Hall enforcement officer threatened to revoke their permits and seize their goods, it resulted in a heated argument that almost got out of hand.

When the situation cooled down, several stall operators poured out their grievances to The Malay Mail.

A trader, who preferred to be known only as Gunaseelan,

said he and the other traders were taken aback when they received notices at 10.30pm on Tuesday that City Hall would carry out enforcement action.

"Why should any action be taken when the National Council for the Blind Malaysia (NCBM) had issued a letter of support for the Deepavali stalls?" he asked.

Amar Singh, who runs a restaurant in Jalan Tun Sambanthan and also a stall in front of his outlet, said the enforcement action could have been avoided.

"When City Hall issued the stall licences, they should have made it clear that furniture and goods should not be placed on the tactile part of the walkway," he said.

Another trader, who identified himself as Shanker, said those whose stalls and goods were seized stood to lose RM1,000 or more.

"The government should not make things difficult for us traders," he said.

Structures impeding the blind, says Gerakan LET t here b e no more Deepavali stalls extending from the KL Monorail station to the Public Bank branch in Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields from next year.

Gerakan Federal Territories vice-chairman Datuk K. Sabaratnam said the stalls along one side of a tactile pathway along Jalan Tun Samb ant han obst r uc te d the movements of visuallyimpaired people who live and work in the area.

"Because of the stalls, it is difficult for blind people to get to the Monorail station," he said during a visit there with members of the National Council for the Blind Malaysia (NCBM) last week.

"As such, we have proposed to KL City Hall (DBKL) to not allow stalls to be set up near the Monorail station from next year."

Also present were officials from several DBKL departments such as Enforcement, Health and Environment as well as Business Facilitation and Hawker Management.

City hall officials declined to comment.

O n Tu e s d ay, Fe d e r a l Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik R aja Z ainal Abidin had instructed City Hall officers to immediately move the Deepavali stalls away from the tactile walkways.

had complained that the stalls endangered them as they had to walk on the busy road in order to get around the stalls.

Gerakan Federal Territories anti-crime and public safety bureau chief Lim Teck Ang also said the one-way traffic flow system and rapid development at Brickfields are hampering the movements of blind people.

"We have proposed a revision of the one-way traffic flow in Brickfields to DBKL as it has not alleviated traffic congestion," he said.

"Speed-breakers should also be constructed at pedestrian crossings to curb motorists from speeding."

Lim said these were among

the grouses expressed by 100 visually-impaired people in a survey conducted by Gerakan from Sept 27 to 29.

Other concerns were the obstruction of movement caused by double-parked cars, rubbish on walkways, uneven roads and pathways and food stalls along pathways at Jalan Padang Belia.

Meanwhile, Society of the Blind in Malaysia's (SBM) communication and accessibility chairman Loh Kong Ken said the tactile pathways were not constructed properly to aid the movement of blind people.

"The tactile pathway next to the KL Monorail station can hardly be felt," said Loh.

THE Deepavali stalls in Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields may be moved elsewhere next year.

The Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Ministry's deputy director-general of socio-economic development, Datuk Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz, said: "We have allowed the stalls here for the past six years. This is the first time there have been complaints. But if this is such a big problem, we will move the Deepavali stalls elsewhere next year."

Amin said he visited Jalan Tun Sambanthan last Friday and met with the stall operators and some members of the blind community who felt the stalls were an obstruction.

"We found that a majority of the blind have no problems walking along the space between the stalls and the shops," he said.

"In fact, we have received a letter of support for the stalls from the National Council for the Blind Malaysia (NCBM).

However, we will take action against stall operators who flout the rules."

Amin commended the Indian Petty Traders Association Kuala Lumpur for appointing marshals to help the blind move about the area.

"City Hall officers will also be present to assist the blind and other pedestrians," he said.

He also said City Hall had moved two canopies set up by stall operators which were found to be obstructing the way of pedestrians.

"The stall operators have been told not to close off the tactile walkway during the day but they are allowed to lock their stalls at night to keep their goods safe."

Unfortunately for 52-yearold Teoh Moy Lay, doing this cost her her life.

She was dragged 70 metres in front of her home at Jalan Kangar 92, off Jalan Kapar, after a carjacker mowed her down as she tried to stop him from stealing her Toyota Altis.

Sadly, Teoh succumbed to her serious head and body injuries while being taken to the hospital.

The tragedy occurred on Tuesday about 7.30pm when Teoh, a finance executive

at a credit firm in Kuala Lumpur, had just returned from work.

When contacted by The Malay Mail, North Klang police chief Supt Shukor Sulong said the victim, probably thinking it was safe to leave the car engine running, got out to open the front gate of her home.

“Suddenly, a man, who was believed to have been hiding behind some bushes, appeared and entered the victim's car,” said Shukor.

As the carjacker tried to drive off with the vehicle, Teoh immediately ran in

front of the vehicle to stop the carjacking.

“At the same time, the victim called out to her husband who was inside their home," said Shukor.

Determined to get away, the carjacker rammed into Teoh, who had both her hands outstretched.

She was dragged under the vehicle for about 70 metres from her house.

"Her husband, upon hearing Teoh's scream, rushed out and tried to give chase but failed," Shukor said.

Shukor said the husband then rushed Teoh to the Seri Kota Hospital nearby, but she succumbed to her injuries at 8.20pm.

"We have set up a task-force and launched a manhunt to track down the carjacker,” said Shukor.

Police are also checking on the possibility the carjacker had an accomplice as witnesses say they saw a car trailing Teoh’s stolen vehicle as it sped off.

Shukor said police believe the carjacker could have followed Teoh before she reached her home.

“Anyone who has seen a silver Toyota Altis bearing registration number BKV 3882 should contact the nearest police station.”

The case is investigated under Section 302 of Penal Code for murder.

KLIA drug smugglers employ new tactics

THE second week of October saw a total seizure of 16.5kg of syabu worth RM4.13 million, by narcotics police from Selangor and Bukit Aman at the KL International Airport (KLIA). The seizures were made in four separate cases involving Iranians, Nigerians and a Malaysian. All the suspects are being investigated under Section 39B of Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The 'scent' of syabu THE unusual — and failed — methods of bungling drug smugglers at KLIA resurfaced last week involving the usual suspects — Iranians and Nigerians.

Six Iranians, including five women, thought they had an ingenious way of smuggling syabu (methamphetamine) in toiletries and cosmetics and must have taken weeks to prepare their drug delivery to the local syndicate here.

They compressed 5.4kg of syabu into 12 bottles of hair, body, shaving and deodorant sprays and attached a short tube on top of each bottle that, upon being pressed, released the scent of the respective sprays.

Selangor Narcotics CID chief ACP Nordin Kadir said their ingenuity, however, did not take into account that normal bottles of the seized items weighed much lighter.

He said the weight was the giveaway and praised his men for being alert to such details that led to police intercepting the attempt to smuggle in the drugs.

Nordin also said while drug smugglers were always trying to outwit the authorities at entry points with new methods, others foolishly stuck by silly methods that

gave them away easily.

He w a s r e f e r r i n g t o two other cases involving Nigerians who were arrested on suspicion of smuggling in 390 grams and 5.7kg respectively of syabu, two days after the Iranians were caught.

On Oct 6, a Selangor and Bukit Aman narcotics police team found the syabu hidden in the luggage of all six Iranians, aged between 20 and 42 years. However, two days after busting them, the Nigerians showed up.

One, a 22-year-old, hid the syabu in the steel rods inside of his suitcase and the other, a 27-year-old, simply used the suitcase compartments to hide the drugs.

Customs officers suspected something amiss when the scanning system indicated blurry contents inside the rods of the luggages and other compartments.

"The two attempts by the Nigerians simply showed they did not fear for their

foolish acts,"said Nordin, adding initial investigations showed it was the first entry here as tourists for the suspects.

The Iranians' remands end today while the Nigerians are remanded till Saturday to facilitate investigations.

Parcels taken out of lost-and-found department POLICE are investigating how a 29-year-old Malaysian man was able to gain entry into the KLIA lost-and-found department last Sunday.

The suspect, a gold broker, was able to remove eight

parcels, in all containing 5kg of syabu, from a luggage which was kept inside the department.

Selangor Narcotics CID chief ACP Nordin Kadir said police believe this was

a new tactic used by drug smugglers . " We b e l i e v e a n o t h e r suspect would intentionally leave the luggage behind while transiting, fearing customs checks. Knowing

the luggage would be redirected to the lost-and-found department, the suspect would collude with a local to retrieve the drugs," Nordin said, adding the suspect was nabbed while leaving the

lost-and-found department.

Investigations are underway to determine where the luggage came from and Nordin added the suspect is being remanded until Sunday.

Suspected carjacker shot dead POLICE shot dead a suspected carjacker near a playground in Jalan Timur, Section 24/1, Shah Alam, last night. The 28-year-old suspect was believed to be a member of the group who had hijacked a Mitsubishi Grandis at the Bukit Gantang rest area in Perak on Sept 24. Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said checks revealed the suspect had five previous criminal records including a murder case in Sungai Petani, Kedah. Tun Hisan said police responded to a tip-off that a Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) had been abonded near the playground.

A Perodua Kancil stopped near the MPV and the suspect alighted.

When police approached the MPV the suspect fired two shots at the police who returned fire, killing him on the spot.

Three more Nepalese die from flat fire THREE of the four Nepalese factory workers injured in a fire at their ground floor flat in Jalan Tupai, Section 20 on Tuesday, died in hospital yesterday. A fifth man died shortly after fire engulfed their unit at the D'Era flats at 11am. The three men — Chandra Bahadur, Khadka Bahadur Shastra and Tibendra Rana Maghr, aged 21 to 27, had suffered second degree burns on their faces and bodies. A spokesman for Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang said Chandra and Khadka died at 5am and Tibendra at 4.15pm yesterday.

Smashing success Badminton a hit as tool to help underprivileged children

IT was a different activitytype programme arranged for deprived children as they were given an opportunity to excel in badminton.

Recently, 50 underprivileged children from several homes in Puchong got together at Michael's Badminton Academy (MBA) in Puchong for a daylong activity under the MBA-IOI Properties 'Hope for Change' Badminton Charity Programme — a 10-month badminton training workshop customised to provide deprived children the opportunity to learn and excel in badminton.

The day's activity, included a two-hour team building session

by Leaderonomics. It focused on enthusiasm and how it affects leadership and team work. There were also talks, a cartoon screening and group activities for the children aged nine to 16 years.

"I thought it was going to

be boring, but I did have a lot of fun with the activities. The session also taught me ways to be excited about my school work and other chores I usually don't like doing," said 15-yearold Muniandy from Rumah Shalom.

At the end of the session, the children were given handouts and worksheets to bring home with them.

"If what I learned today about enthusiasm helps me achieve my goals, then I look forward to planning my life!" said Shahril, 13, from Rumah Kebajikan At-Taqwa.

MBA director KC Lee said the feedback received from the programme's coaches after six months of training was that besides enjoying themselves, the children's improvement in skills and physical training was impressive.

Awards to recognise good chemical firms THE Chemical Industries Council of Malaysia (CICM) is organising, as part of their ongoing Responsible Care initiative, the CICM Responsible Care Awards 2010 and has received entries from 36 chemical companies.

The Awards 2010, sponsored

by BDP International, a signatory of the Responsible Care initiative in Malaysia since 2003, was officially launched in April by Datuk Ir Dr Johari Basri, director-general of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

Now in its eighth year, the Awards help promote greater awareness of the Responsible Care Programme (RCP) and its principles, and give recognition to Responsible Care signatories, currently 121 in Malaysia, that have made the most progress in implementing the programme’s six codes of management practices in their organisations.

The main categories are the Corporate Awards for the six codes and a Special Award for

small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Corporate Awards comprise recognition for signatories in the petrochemicals, oleochemicals, general chemicals and agricultural chemicals sub-sectors who best complied with the six codes.

Other categories include the Platinum Award for Responsible Care signatories who are able to sustain their performance consistently for three consecutive years for a particular code of management practice and the Individual Award for greatest contribution in advancing Responsible Care beyond one's own organisation.

The rate of compliance with the six codes and the RCP indicators have increased due to peer pressure and the competitive spirit and rivalry among the companies to out-perform each other.

Award winners will be announced in December at a Chemical Industry dinnercum-awards presentation ceremony.

Mulitiple factors cause children stress

On Oct 6, Liow had revealed that stress level among students nationwide is on a "high".

A seven-month survey by the ministry this year showed that from 6,540 students surveyed, 4.8 per cent of them experienced stress, 17.1 per cent were undergoing extreme anxiety and 5.2 per cent suffered manic depression.

The survey was conducted on students from six secondary schools.

Liow had said factors leading children to experience stress include pressure to do well in examinations, problems at home and pressure from schools to excel.

A total of 2,345 students underwent the mental health intervention with 279 teachers who were trained to identify and handle their emotional, behavioural and mental problems.

As for the new mental health screening exercise, 687 health officers comprising 138 doctors and 549 paramedics have gone through community mental health trainings until Sept 30 this year, he said.

In April, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin had clarified the highest number of suicide deaths involved the Chinese community, with 47.5 per cent out of the 328 cases in 2009. The second highest was the Indian community (21.3 per cent) followed by Malays (13.4 per cent) and Sabah and Sarawak natives (3.4 per cent).

The ministry has been collecting data of suicide cases since 2007 via the National Suicide Registry of Malaysia.

Between 2007 and 2009, the registry recorded 731 suicide cases — 113 suicides in 2007, 290 in 2008 and 328 cases in 2009.

The same records also showed that men were more suicidal than women.

"In 2007, 82 men (73 per cent) committed suicide as opposed to 31 women (27 per cent). In 2008, 219 men (75.5 per cent) committed suicide compared to 71 women (24.5 per cent), and in 2009, 244 (74.4 per cent) suicide deaths were men and 84 cases (25.5 per cent) were women," Rosnah said.

She said the ministry continued to look for more psychiatrists for mental and government hospitals to help patients with mental health and suicidal tendencies.

THE chairman of a committee tasked to hold a public hearing on the proposal to amend the land status of the Ulu Klang Recreation Club (UKRC) says he "cannot be rushed" into holding the hearing.

Orang Besar Daerah Gombak Datuk Paduka R aja Wan Mahmood Pawan Teh said there was no delay as he was acting within the time-frame given by the Selangor Menteri Besar.

Wan Mahmood has been asked by MB Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to organise the public hearing on the proposal to change the status of the 1.2ha land from "open space" to "recreational".

Tee Keat accuses MRT of heavy-handedness

FORMER Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat (pic) questioned the land acquisition in Jalan Sultan by the Klang Valley MY Rapid Transit (KVMRT) project owner, saying the affected owners are having their "arms twisted" to give in to MRT Co despite the legality of doing so was being disputed.

Ong, who is Pandan MP, said the authorities must stop intimidating the owners into selling their properties.

“They must stop all means of high-handedness, including individuals being called in separately and being asked point-blank on the quantum of compensation,” he told a Press conference at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) yesterday.

“From what I gather, the acquisition is now being actively pursued. Why is that so? Is it not a form of arm-twisting?”

MRT land acquisition has been called a land-grab exercise since the National Land Code 1965 allowed underground land to be acquired without affecting surface property.

Ong also asked why the feasibility study and social impact assessment report have yet to be made public to determine the structural safety of buildings being acquired.

"We know well those are prewar buildings (at Jalan Sultan) and whether or not they are going to be structurally safe and fit for occupation after the tunnelling work, has to be determined. So far I think it is still open-ended. Nobody knows, and there's not even an assurance on safety,” said the former MCA president.

Ong said the owners are being forced to sell their properties when the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) sent a letter on Sept 8 requesting owners to provide documents on their land for valuation.

“The authorities said acquisition will be based on willing buyer and willing seller basis. I think this doesn’t hold because I believe most of the affected owners have made their stance known that they are not willing sellers. Why then the authorities are still pursuing the submission of the evaluation reports?”

Yesterday, Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang traders formed a committee to pressure MRT Co into considering realigning the MRT’s Sungai Buloh-Kajang line.

Called the Committee of Preserving Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang, it is supported by Ong and DAP Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun as advisors.

Ong said committee members met with MRT Co last Thursday but the officials “shot down” the owners' realignment proposals.

The committee wants the MRT line re-routed from Jalan Sultan to Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and for the new route to be integrated with the LRT Pasar Seni station and KTMB line and the Puduraya bus terminal.

Ong also urged the owners not to delay in asking Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to intervene.

Only a public hearing stands in the way of the UKRC from claiming the 1.2 ha land as their own since they paid the land premium for it in 1958.

However, over the past two decades, UKRC was involved in a tussle with the local government over ownership of the land on which a clubhouse has been built.

An effort to change the status of the club's land from 'open space' to 'recreational' began on April 1 when it was tabled

by Saari at the Selangor state assembly and subsequently approved.

Saari had asked the State government to either amend the gazette or revoke the land gazette and issue a new land title for the club.

Following this, he said a public hearing would be held for residents to express their grouses on the amendment.

Abdul Khalid suggested the hearing be chaired by Wan Mahmood.

Land owners for advisory council

T E N m e mb e rs f rom t h e Kampung Baru Malay Agricultural Settlement's (MAS) administrative board will be included in the Kampung Baru Development Corporation's (KBDC) 15-member advisory council, and one of the land owners will also be appointed as deputy chairman.

Announcing this yesterday, Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said: "The selection of the advisory council members will be done next year."

Last week, the Dewan Rakyat passed the Kampung Baru Development Corporation Bill 2011 after making three main changes from the previous 2010 Bill.

The changes: Clause 57 states that MAS will not be abolished; Clause 51 states that if the Public Authorities Protection Act 1948 is applied, KBDC will not have immunity; and under Clause 5.1, the KBDC advisory council will have representatives from the land owners, one of whom will be deputy chairman.

"I will continue my work and duties as normal. Whether I am qualified to contest or not, depends on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to decide."

Messy maintenance City Hall says uncollected tree-pruning debris 'overlooked', vows cleanup

WHILE RONALD NG of Bangsar is grateful City Hall contractors have trimmed trees along Jalan Maarof, he wishes they complete the job by removing the debris.

Instead, he says the resultant fallen leaves and cut branches are left piled up on a pedestrian walkway for the past two weeks.

“On Sept 30, some contractors trimmed the trees in Lorong Maarof, but the branches and leaves were not collected and they had since dried up.”

NG says they would get blown away by strong wind, creating an eyesore.

To make matters worse, he says the spot has turned into a rubbish dump by irrespon-

sible people. “They throw garden refuse, old clothes, personal belongings and even old mattresses there."

NG says the garbage not only obstructs the walkway further but causes flash floods during a downpour when it is washed down the drain.

“Every time it rains heavily, the road in front of a local telecommunications office gets flooded."

NG claims numerous calls to the City Hall Lembah Pantai office have gone unanswered. ● CITY Hall public relations officer Zurida Hashim confirms the branches and leaves have been left behind by contractors engaged to

do routine maintenance in Lorong Maarof last month.

"We were unaware rubbish had been left behind but believe the contractor might have overlooked the pile as the area involved in the maintenance work was large."

City Hall, however, thanks NG for highlighting the matter and promises immediate action. Zurida says a cleaning crew will be sent to the area this afternoon.

When contacted, NG expresses happiness over City Hall's assurance that the area will be cleaned up soon.

He says he will alert the local authority should he comes across similar problems in the neighbourhood.

One man for 1,000: Israel awaits Shalit ISRAEL was impatiently awaiting news yesterday about when captive soldier Gilad Shalit would return home, a day after the Jewish State inked a deal with Hamas that will see 1,000 Palestinians freed.

The deal, which was signed late on Tuesday, is expected to get under way in the coming days, with the initial release of some 450 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the now 25-year-old soldier.

A second tranche of 550 prisoners will be released within two months.

Israel's negotiator David Meidan said he was due in Egypt soon to finalise details of Shalit's return home.

If the accord is implemented, it will end an ordeal that has lasted more than five years for the young soldier, who has become a national icon in Israel since his capture by Gaza-based militants in June 2006.

FEARS grew yesterday that a ship stuck on a New Zealand reef would break up and release a new wave of pollution, as its two chief officers were charged over the nation's worst oil spill.

Prime Minister John Key said cracks had been found in the hull of the stricken container ship Rena, and the situation was precarious, with the boat teetering at a steep angle in stormy seas.

"We have identified stress

fractures on the ship. We can't rule out the risk of the ship breaking up, that's certainly being monitored," he told reporters near Tauranga, where already beaches have been fouled and wildlife found dead.

ing Iranian and US passports, was arrested on Sept 29 and appeared in court yesterday in Manhattan.

Sound of silence for AIM?

A music industry player, in a recent meeting asked, “So what’s the latest on AIM (Anugerah Industri Muzik)?”

Apparently, the backlash from unresolved issues surrounding the upcoming 18th AIM has led to widespread dissatisfaction among the artistes.

“I heard there’s a silent boycott of AIM this year, is it true?”

It may have begun with a few questions at the Press conference to announce nominations of AIM 18, but the current crop of talents not signed to major labels, and unfazed by supposed hierarchy — have begun to speak up.

Even the established names expressed their dissatisfaction and confusion over the change in rulings this year — including Datuk Siti Nurhaliza and Datuk Sheila Majid.

The dissent is not a result of rebellion but desperation — a more apt summary of the scenario now.

How else can you put it, when it has been proven that the pool of talents who now lead the music industry, are not the formulaic doldrums we have come to expect from the majors with their cookiecutters who run the show.

To answer the question as to whether there will be a "silent boycott’" of AIM, you would have to pay attention that SILENT is indeed the word chosen by whichever party that coined it.

Thus, the production team behind the show, are the only ones who can reveal whether or not class acts are choosing not to perform at AIM. There will never be admissions, as that would amount to confrontation, and kudos to the new school of talents who realise that at the end of the day, AIM is the only prestigious brand being judged and recognised by their peers and that they should not damage the brand itself in trying to resolve issues. Even at this desperate stage.

Still, if hearsay was to be believed, the word is, rocker Faizal Tahir has walked off the show and is refusing to take part.

For reasons unknown at this point, so has Anuar Zain who will not perform his nominated Sedetik Lebih.

Instead, rumour has it, he will be replaced by Stephen Rahman Hughes — which should serve well for the cause, what with a British actor performing at a Malaysian awards show.

This amidst the brouhaha over AIM’s stance on "nationality" in not allowing Greg Henderson and Hang Dimas of Hujan to participate because of "eligibility" or "technical" issues and so on.

Then there are also those like Yuna and Zee Avi who have been on the receiving end, the latter who did not qualify simply because she was not signed to a local label (though one has to question why no

local label had the foresight to sign her on) In the case of Yuna, it is sad that her album, 70 per cent of which was recorded in Malaysia, does not qualify.

Hujan has been the victim of the situation, nevermind the fact that technicalities even overrule the fact that its member in Hang Dimas is signed under a local label, and a local publishing house at that, for his works.

6ixth Sense too is in a similar bind because of the nationality of its lead vocalist.

So smart move by the producers of AIM 18 if indeed Stephen Rahman Hughes is to perform. NOT! And Faizal and Anuar are not the only ones who will be absent for reasons best known to themselves. A few bands and artistes have already pledged not to even attend the awards, let alone perform.

However, that’s just the start of problems for the production if indeed talents and acts who reign the industry and who people want to see, stage a walk-out.

Enough said.

Search goes on tour AFTER rocking the nation with the Double Trouble concert with Wings, it is time for Search to focus on what it does best on it own. This time, the band is expected to rockshake Malaysia through a series of grand concerts to commemorate its 30th anniversary.

The concert is titled Konsert Fenomena 30 Tahun Search and it might just be one of THE events of year, as Amy (vocalist), Kid (lead guitar), Nasir (bass guitar), Nordin (rhythm guitar) and Yazit (drums) move from one major city to another to remind their fans why they are still in the business.

The first concert is expected to take place at Stadium Batu Kawan, Pulau Pinang on Nov 19, and that would be followed by another show at Stadium Larkin, Johor Bahru on Dec 3.

The grand finale is expected to be held at Padang Astaka, Kuala Lumpur on Dec 17.

Amy, the main man, is very excited about going on the road again, and is really thankful with all the support

"I can assure that the concert will not be forgotten for the next 10 or 20 years. This is by far the biggest concert ever held by Search and we expect more than 30,000 people will come to each location," Amy said.

Each show will be around two hours and will not include any medley. Nope, no shortcuts. Every song will be performed full. Fans of Search will certaily appreciate this.

"Of course when we talk about song selection, we have to also bear in mind that our audience will always have their own set of favourite songs. We will play some 20 Search's hardcore songs. We want our fans to be really satisfied," Nasir said.

The massive concert will also employ among the best in the industry — from the technical crew right to the sound team.

Apparently, acclaimed sound engineer Yamaguchi from Singapore will also be brought in to ensure the quality of the sound for each locations.

This concert will be a platform for other talents to showcase their musicianship, as Search will also be incorporating mini showcases throughout the day at the location before the start of the main show.

"We will inject a festival feel to it. The crowd will be given a taste of the local musicians who will perform from as early as 5pm before Search takes centrestage," organiser, Oracle Accord director Jerome Lee said.

Meanwhile, prices for the tickets will be set at different rates depending on the locations. For instance, for the shows in Penang and Johor Bahru, the tickets will be priced at RM59. The ticket for the concert in Kuala Lumpur will be priced at RM69.

A decade of Twins 10 years of growth for bubblegum pop group makes them stronger For Gillian Chung, one of the duo from Hong Kong's bubblegum pop group Twins, who was embroiled in a sex photo scandal back in 2008 involving several high profile singers including Edison Chen and Cecilia Cheung, it is the time to move on.

Chung, who seems to have taken quite a while to recover, is now ready to sing again.

Since the scandal, Chung has been taking baby steps, and now she is bouncing back to rejoin her "good sister" Charlene Choi, the other half of Twins.

The duo last came to Malaysia for a concert in 2006. When the scandal broke, Chung was among the first to come out into the open and somehow gained the support of many Hong Kong artistes when she fell victim to hidden cameras, which were secretly installed in the changing rooms.

As for Twin's journey so far, Choi admitted she was not interested when her manager decided to form an all-girl band back in 2001 with Chung.

"Bands, especially an allgirl group like ours won't last long. At most, they will only last two to three years," she said.

However, Twins seems to have managed to stand the test of time, proving critics wrong and that that they are worth the industry's praise.

In 2008, they won two major awards at the 2007 Jade Solid Gold Top 10 in Hong Kong, as well as bagging the most popular group award for the Asia Pacific region as well.

"The 10 years have seen a lot of growth for us. A lot of things have happened, and I take them as a learning curve for myself. Both of us cherish

every moment together," said Choi.

"The chemistry between us has been stronger with each passing minute. Most of the time we don't say much but understand each other's thoughts perfectly well," Chung then added.

As for the group's future direction and style, Choi said the band is constantly changing and absorbing new ideas.

"We've been taking steps to incorporate different styles into our singing and as a band. We will continue to sing as long as we want to, but along the way, we still want some changes," Choi concluded.

Meanwhile, on one of the biggest issues that cropped out of his no-shows was the "relationship" with

Rozita, where the actress kept speaking to the media about how intimate the duo were getting.

“I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I have said time and time again — we are merely friends.

Nothing more. No matter what she says, or chooses to imply, I am just friends with her, and it will remain so.”

Rozita, on the other hand, has been incessantly using his name to indicate a relationship.

“Like I said, I just don’t want to say anything that may hurt anyone or affect my friendship with anyone.

She’s entitled to say what she pleases but she is my friend, and will be a friend.

There is nothing more at this stage, and I don’t foresee that changing.”

A year in the business and already riddled with so many issues, one has to question what lies in store for the future of Shahir.

“I can only hope for the best and work hard towards my goals. I will leave the rest to God and my fans and continue to do what I can to pursue my love for music.”

By JOE LEE joelee@mmail.com.my THE rock festival of the year Rockaway 2011 may have ended on a high note, but for some fans - there was a bitter aftertaste.

On the Internet, a hatefest began when the event’s project manager Rahul, the founding member and guitarist cum vocalist for local act One Buck Short took to Twitter to vent his frustrations against American pop-punk act, All Time Low. The band had cussed incessantly and going by the tweets, it was said to have even responded in a foul manner to police warnings to cease spewing profanities while onstage.

The Malay Mail caught up with Rahul for his take on what took place on and back stage last weekend at the rock concert.

“Well, after Story Of The Year played, I went back to the hotel to change. When I got back they had just started so I was watching from the sideline. That’s when I found out they had some issues in patching stuff up to the system.”

Rahul explained that only 20 minutes had been allocated for the interval but All Time Low had requested for half an hour and ended up taking longer.

“We had all our settings ready for the performing bands and they could have just patched in their setting, but something happened with their USB drive and things didn’t work as planned on their side. They were upset and probably ended up taking it out onstage. I heard them swearing away claiming they were upset with the sound, apologizsng to their fans and saying that it was not their fault.”

found that it was not a problem on the part of the organisers.

“Then the police came by to check and even sent a message asking what was happening with the endless cussing on stage. The band’s manager was performing along with them and we had our people telling them throughout the show to stop but they persisted with swearing.”

Rahul said it was not a major issue, as the organisers had spoken to the band and their manager after show, and highlighted the problems regarding their shenanigans.

“All Time Low did not want to do a soundcheck, and while they reasoned that the band was upset with the sound and were tired, it was not right to push the blame on the organisers. When I spoke to them the next morning, they did feel bad, especially since they had a young set of fans as well.”

He said while occasional expletives escaped from other acts, All Time Low swore the most out of anyone, knowing the rules they were made aware of much earlier on.

“The band’s manager apologised and admitted their mistake and said they felt bad, but they have to realise that the incident had given us a bad name. The band sent an email and said they would love to come back to perform for their own show here, as they were taken aback by their fan base in Malaysia.”

All Time Low’s antics were not limited to just profanities onstage. The band which played

for about an hour, not only took time to set-up to repatch sound settings to their liking, they further delayed the show for other bands that came on after them.

“We reminded bands to be wary of their actions on stage, and they all adhered to local regulations of how they should behave. We had a Press conference for Story Of The Year and they swore away, but they apologised and restrained themselves during the show.”

Rahul said the organisers were called up to meet the police, “but we have to send in a report first, and we shall leave it to the authorities to decide whether there’s going to be any action.

“It shouldn’t have happened and they shouldn’t have let loose.”

However, it’s a case of being between a rock and a hard place for organisers, he said, as “it’s hard to monitor everything as no one knows what’s going to happen when something goes wrong.

“In a show where so many people are performing, the needs of other performers have to be accommodated. At Rockaway we give the same treatment to all bands, and something like this hopefully will not happen in the future.”

Rockaway 2011 was a resounding success with local acts Hujan, Tres Empre, Dichi Michi, Busco, Oh Chentaku, Kyoto Protocol, They Will Kill Us All, Lo, Deja Voodoo Spells, Monoloque, Love Me Butch, Twilight Actiongirl, Pop Shuvit featuring Project E.A.R., Metalasia, Massacre Conspiracy, and One Buck Short tearing up the stage alongside foreign acts like Story Of the Year, All Time Low and The Story of the Year Used.

This wasn’t going to stop the ultimate party and rock show festival, Rockaway 2011, that saw more than 7,000 people pouring in just like the rain, (that finally stopped after an hour, much to the relief of the organisers).

Although it delayed the start of the festival by almost two hours, the massive turnout gathered to rock on with the most impressive line up of 13 local acts and three international bands from the US. Hard core rockers, whether emo, punk or grundge — you name it — were all there and together with incessant head banging, there were also mosh pits and body surfing.

Carpark A of Bukit Jalil Stadium turned into a collosium that was packed full of wild rockers, and that was enough to make this 12hour marathon into an amazing and record-breaking success.

The highlights of the day included Hujan’s set with a twist

of hard-core, the introduction of Captain Rockaway, who was Hitz.Fm’s comedic party expert, Ryan.

This was followed by Love Me Butch’s and Deja Voodoo Spells’ heavier and soulful set, followed

by Kyoto Protocol’s more engaging performance. Busco gave a super energetic act in full throttle while Monoloque’s line up had a touch of retro and Tres Empre showcased the best of their freshest sounds.

Jason Lo played some of his more popular classics, that led to Oh Chentaku’s and Dichi Michi’s crowd pulling performance and ended with Twilight Action Girl’s rocking DJ set.

The Used. They went all out and performed all their hits in the last hour of the show and although it started pouring again, it didn’t dampen their spirits (pun intended).

With this, the festival ended with a (head) bang and although thousands of fans would have woken up the next day with throbbing headaches, they were still high with the fact that they were part of a huge and very successful rock festival with the sickest line-up.

THERE was a time when no one took notice of him.

He was too young, they said, and he was a product of Akademi Fantasia (Season 5 to be exact) — a reality show that many “true musicians” would not have taken seriously. Furthermore, he was not deemed “commercial” enough due to his “weight issues”.

True, he was not the champion of AF5, but Aizat Amdan proved many detractors wrong.

After AF5, he laid low and quietly “reinvented” himself.

His focus was to get his first album out (which he conceptualised) and along the way, he also lost a lot of weight which transformed his entire outlook positively.

Several awards later, Aizat proved more critics wrong when he was chosen to perform at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP), which is a rarity, even among the more seasoned and established performers.

The verdict? Aizat’s show at DFP was a memorable event.

He wowed the audience with a rather outstanding performance.

He appeared in a simple check shirt that night, and was accompanied by pianist and music coordinator,

Fatah Hasan Said. Joining them were his band members and a small group of violinists, cellists and back-up vocalists.

All of them merged and created a blend of sound that appeased the hall throughout the 90-minute show.

The mood was laid back, set

by Aizat with his first song Susun Silang Kata, followed by Fikirlah.

One issue that was apparent that night was Aizat’s rather a w k w a r d communication skills. He might be a great singer, but an

The hall was silent when Aizat delivered the best song of the night, Pergi, a poignant song featured in the late Yasmin Ahmad’s film, Talentime. The song also won him the ultimate place in Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL24) in 2009.

In the last segment, Aizat paid tribute to Alleycats.

His intepretation of Senyumlah Kuala Lumpur was spot on. He really made it his own.

As the crowd screamed for more, Aizat returned for an encore, an apt song Hadapi Dengan Senyuman originally sung by Indonesian band Dewa.

In short, the entire show was such an enjoyable experience, it was a night to remember. For Aizat, to be able to perform in such a prestigious hall such as DFP, was also a sign that Malaysian music is moving “upmarket”. — By CHE'AZ

The heat is on Wie admits weather will be a challenge

AMERICAN Michelle Wie yesterday admitted that the hot weather in Malaysia could hurt her play as she attempts to recover from a poor outing this year.

Wie, 22, who competed against the men on the PGA Tour as a 14-year-old, only has two wins on the LPGA Tour.

Asked about her season so far, Wie, who is ranked 14 in the world, said: "It's not been too good a year.

I've not played as well as I would have liked.

"But we are here and I'm ready to play. There are lots of challenges ahead and lots of tougher players, and Yani (Tseng) seems to get stron-

ger each week."

Tseng of Taiwan, who is also a former winner of the US Women's Public Links Championship, has won 11 times, including five major crowns.

Both Wie and world No 1 Tseng are in Malaysia for the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2011 which tees off today.

SEBASTIAN VETTEL believes his second Formula 1 title triumph has freed Red Bull to explore for the rest of the season in their bid for a ''hattrick'' next year.

The 24-year-old German became the youngest backto-back and two-time champion last Sunday when he finished third in the Japanese Grand Prix for his 14th podium finish in 15 races, reclaiming his crown with four to spare.

This means Red Bull can now focus on building a car to help Vettel become only the third driver in Formula 1 history to win three successive titles alongside legends in Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio and fellow German Michael Schumacher.

That will almost certainly see the team use the four remaining Grands Prix in Korea on Sunday. India, Abu Dhabi and Brazil are glorified test sessions. With few regulation changes for next season, the 2012 car will not be too far removed from this year's model, allowing the engineers to push the boundaries and try out a few ideas.

"The best thing is this season is not over yet," said Vettel. "We still have four races to learn a lot, in

a way a certain freedom to explore, to make sure next year we are even stronger and more prepared."

That point was emphasised by team principal Christian Horner.

"Everything we do this year, we learn and benefit from for next year," said Horner.

"It's the only opportunity, track testing wise, we have before RB8 (the 2012 car) is born. So we will look to optimise all the track time we have left this year."

If Red Bull and Vettel come flying out of the traps again they could take some stopping, which will only add to suggestions of them building a dynasty.

Horner is wary of such remarks and is simply hoping for more of the same next season.

"We have had a phenomenal 2010 and 2011, we had a great 2009, and the team work phenomenally well as a group of people," said Horner.

"Unlike in previous years regulations are fixed, there are common tyre suppliers and much more stringent regulations in certain areas, so to achieve the level of performance we have is quite exceptional."

Wales' Jenkins primed for battle up front WITH a semifinal date with France on Saturday, Wales prop Gethin Jenkins (pic) is under no illusions as to how important a role he will play if they are to reach their first-ever final.

If selected, Jenkins will line up against France's Nicolas Mas, a man who has induced cold sweats in opposition front rows since he made his debut for Les Bleus in 2003.

Mas showed he was back to his best form in France's quarterfinal win over England last weekend giving opposing prop Matt Stevens a torrid time.

"We all know France have a strong scrum and that is something we will be working on throughout the week," said Jenkins.

"When you play French teams, it is a given that the scrum is going to be strong.

We play a lot of French (club) teams throughout the year and they all have a good scrum."

Jenkins himself feels he is back to his best after struggling with a calf injury before the start of the tournament.

He missed the Dragons' opening match against South Africa, returned as a substitute against Samoa and then started against Namibia and Fiji.

Jenkins came through the quarterfinal win with Ireland last Saturday unscathed and revelled in the open, interlinked game plan that featured backs and forwards charging at the Irish defence.

"Saturday was the first time I felt totally fit. Against Fiji I felt terrible and was in trouble after about 20 minutes and I was trying to be fit for the Ireland game," he said.

"It was a bit touch and go and was always going to be a tough game, but we knew if we played well we could sneak a win."

is someone who likes to save his best displays for the big occasion and is looking forward to another one at Eden Park.

When Wales won the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2005, it was Jenkins who settled Welsh nerves at the start of the decisive match with the opening try.

The match with France will be his 81st cap and he also holds five caps for the British and Irish Lions after playing three Tests against New Zealand in 2005 and twice against South Africa in 2009.

MIDFIELDER Samir Nasri believes his penalty for France in the 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in a Group D match yesterday ranks as the most important of his career as Les Bleus qualified for Euro 2012.

Nasri scored from the spot in the 78th minute, cancelling out a first-half goal from Manchester City teammate Edin Dzeko.

The goal made Nasri the hero of the hour only a month after his international role was being questioned as he was left on the bench by coach Laurent Blanc.

"I have come back from afar," Nasri told L'Equipe. "I came back to the team with a new state of mind. I am at one with the coach and it shows on the pitch."

Fewer balls please, says Nadal

WORLD No 2 Rafael Nadal pleaded with tennis authorities yesterday to take action over the types of balls used at tournaments to safeguard the health of players.

Separate events use different balls, meaning players are often forced to adapt their game quickly — and face different physical challenges — from tournament to tournament in a packed schedule.

Speaking after advancing into the Shanghai Master third round yesterday, Nadal, defeated in Sunday's Japan Open final by Andy Murray, said his concerns were shared by other players.

BRAZILIAN Hulk’s agent has declared that interest is growing in the Porto striker but warned suitors that he would cost a staggering €100 million (RM430.8m).

Hulk, who has been linked with a January switch to Arsenal, has blossomed into one of the most formidable forwards in European football since joining Porto in 2008.

Porto moved to secure his long-term future over the summer by awarding him a new five-year contract, while there is also a release clause in place of €100 million.

The Portuguese club have no intention of letting him go for anything less but, despite the massive price tag, Hulk’s representative Teodoro Fonseca says there is still a lot of interest.

Speculation has suggested that the Gunners are plotting a bid of around £23 million (RM113.3m), which Fonseca insists would be instantly dismissed.

Fonseca admits the most recent Arsenal link is news to him, but claims the Gunners have previously been in touch about signing Hulk.

He told Portuguese newspaper A Bola: “Every year

there are more clubs interested in Hulk and I am also aware that there are clubs from outside the Premier League interested.

“This Arsenal rumour is news to me but it is true that there has been contact before but nothing happened.

Liverpool question international EPL TV deal LIVERPOOL managing director Ian Ayre (pic) has called for top Premier League clubs to be allowed to sell overseas television rights individually, it was reported yesterday.

The world’s richest football league currently sells its international television rights as a joint package worth £3.2 billion (RM15.87m) for the period 2010-13, with the proceeds shared equally across all 20 clubs.

However, Ayre said Liverpool were willing to challenge the structure of the deal, arguing that higher profile teams should be given a bigger slice of the proceeds as they generate more interest in regions such as Asia.

Ayre believes clubs such as Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal should be free to sell rights to their matches individually, following the model used in Spain

by Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“I think the game-changer is going out and recognising our brand globally. Maybe the path will be individual TV rights like they do in Spain,” Ayre told The Guardian.

“If you’re a Bolton fan in Bolton, then you subscribe to Sky because you want to watch Bolton. But if you’re in Kuala Lumpur, there isn’t anyone subscribing to Astro or ESPN to watch Bolton, or if they are, it’s a very small number.

“The large majority are subscrib-

ing to watch Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea or Arsenal.

“What we are actually doing is disadvantaging ourselves against other big European clubs. If Real Madrid or Barcelona or other big European clubs have the opportunity to realise their international media value potential, where does that leave Liverpool and Manchester United?

“If they just get bigger and bigger and they generate more and more, then all the players will start drifting that way and will the Premier
