With 1.5 million to three million sufferers in five years, Malaysia can become top 10 diabetes-hit nation, says minister THERE were 1.5 million diabetics in Malaysia in 2006. That number has since doubled. As of last month, more than three million people are suffering from diabetes. If that’s not alarming enough, two million more are suspected to be suffering from the disease but are unaccounted for. Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said the ministry is concerned with the increase and urged Malaysians to look after themselves. “The increase is very drastic. The number of diabetics has now doubled within a span of less than five years! “At the rate we are going, we could easily be in the world’s top 10 list for the highest number of diabetics,” she told The Malay Mail recently. The minister said 1.5 million diabetics were recorded under the nationwide Second National Health and Morbidity Survey between 1996 and 2006. “Since then, up to October, there are already over three million sufferers. Additionally, there are at least two million more whom we believe are diabetics. “Under the survey, free tests were conducted via door-to-door. The two million estimated excess are
By ANDREW SAGAYAM andrew@mmail.com.my those who declined to take the test or were not at home.” Rosnah reminded Malaysians diabetes is a silent killer. “One will never know he or she is suffering from the disease. Only after seven to 10 years suffering from it that the individual will experience complications. “If left untreated, it can lead to blindness, kidney failure, heart pains and erectile dysfunction. In some cases, patients will suffer gangrene, amputation and septicemia (presence of bacteria in the blood).” Besides taking medication or using insulin, she advised diabetics to observe proper eating habits and engage in physical activity or exercise for at least 30 minutes daily. She urged even those as young as 20 to go for annual screening tests to check their condition, especially for those above 20. This basic test encompasses blood pressure, sugar levels and cholesterol in the blood, Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference. Rosnah said besides diabetes, data compiled from other noncommunicable diseases (NCD) are not satisfactory.

— Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin “Two out of five patients have optimum blood pressure readings. One out of four have good cholesterol level and only one out of six people possess ideal BMI level.” The minister hoped Malaysians are aware about the risk factor of diabetes. “There are six factors that contribute to a person suffering with diabetes. Firstly, an individual has a history of his or her family members suffering from diabetes. They could be overweight and suffering from hypertension. They have a high cholesterol level and lead a sedentary lifestyle. Finally, women who have a history of diabetes during pregnancy, which is also called

It is advisable to get yourself checked.” Meanwhile, the nation’s smallest State, Perlis, has a high number of people losing their legs to diabetes, its Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu, said yesterday. He said from 2007 till last year, between 60 and 100 diabetes patients there underwent leg amputations annually. Perlis has 13,714 patients registered at government clinics alone, said Md Isa when opening the State-level World Diabetes Day at Kampung Nesam near Kangar.

Unemployment rate of 3.2 per cent was acceptable as a rate of below four per cent was considered normal — Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Maznah Mazlan PETALING JAYA
By ANDREW SAGAYAM andrew@mmail.com.my
FORMER MIC deputy president Datuk S. Subramaniam is no longer in intensive care and is said to be stable after a 10-hour brain surgery on Saturday. The 67-year-old is still unconscious and under observation at the Pantai Medical Centre in Bangsar. His former Press secretary, R. Balakrishnan, told The Malay Mail the former was recuperating from the operation after suffering from a mild cerebral hemorrhage due to high blood pressure. He said the surgery started at 4pm on Saturday and ended at 2am yesterday. "Doctors had to perform a coiling procedure to stop the bleeding. It will take a day or two before he regains consciousness." Balakrishnan said more than 30 family, friends and well-wishers came to the hospital to check on Subramaniam's condition. The veteran politician and former deputy minister was at a function on Friday when he felt discomfort and told his driver to take him to a hospital. He was conscious when admitted to Assunta Hospital in Petaling Jaya, but went into a coma and was transferred to the Pantai Medical Centre. His sister, Sarojini, said the first procedure went well and surgeons had then started the second procedure. "The specialists told us the success rate was 95 per cent." Subramaniam's wife, Christina, 60, was also at the hospital. The couple have three children, two sons, aged 33 and 32, and a 26-year-old daughter.

Ministry should be proactive by doing own checks on Kedai 1Malaysia spoiled milk claims, says DAP's Tony Pua THE Health Ministry does not have to wait for outside laboratory reports before making its own checks on alleged contamination of food items sold at Kedai 1Malaysia nationwide. DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua (pic) said this in response to Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai's call to the former to give lab findings of tests on the store chain's fresh milk to the ministry to help in investigations. Pua told The Malay Mail while he will cooperate with the ministry by providing them the findings, the latter should be more proactive in handling the matter and not just depend on his laboratory results.

"I have no problem with providing them the lab results but not everything needs a lab report. They can conduct tests themselves on suspected items at the store since they have an enforcement team and fullyequipped labs as well as other necessary facilities." He, however, did not specify a date on which he will hand over the findings to the ministry. On Friday, Pua claimed a test on the products from Kedai 1Malaysia by two certified labs detected the presence of Escherichia coli or E. coli, a bacteria which can cause serious food poisoning in
humans, and a higher than permitted amount of coliform in the store's fresh milk. He also alleged nine other products — bottled oyster sauce, pineapple jam, ice-cream, condensed milk, canned milk creamer, canned ghee, canned sardine and canned curry chicken — fell short of Food and Regulations Acts standards. Pua subsequently urged the ministry to inspect the products for compliance with existing food laws. Liow, who said the ministry viewed the claims seriously, had advised Pua to submit a copy of the lab findings to the

The department's Selangor deputy director of operations, Mohd Sani Harul, said a fire engine with six firemen from Subang Jaya station was despatched to affected areas. "We began receiving distress calls from residents from 3.15pm," he said, adding his men worked with Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) personnel. "As far as we know, there were no reports of residents or motorists being injured." MPSJ public relations assistant director Azfarizal Abdul Rashid said they received 10 reports of uprooted trees. "Our round-the-clock natural disaster operations room has been acting as fast as we can to remove uprooted trees and clearing the debris," he said, adding the council coordinated the operation with other agencies.

Construction began in October last year and was completed last month, making the Pulau Indah plant the second greenfield canned milk plant after F&N's RM250 million dairy plant in Rojana Industrial Park, Thailand, which opened last June. The Rojana plant in Ayutthaya caters to the Thai and IndoChina markets. "With the new Pulau Indah

To compliment the plant's state-of-the-art technology and machinery, he said 428 employees from the current PJ plant had been trained as increased automation required a higher skills set. When asked on the operations of the flood-affected Rojana plant, Ng said the PJ plant was covering for the Thai and Indo-China markets. "The water level in Thailand has not fully receded. We're

City Hall raids own food centre days, before cleanliness grouse is made NAWAWI MOHAMAD is appalled by the condition of a food court in Bandar Tun Razak. It seems neglected, the stalls are dirty — and there is a tinge of cat poo stench in the air. "The irony is that it is a City Hall eatery, and it is in Jalan Jujur 3 where City Hall's Health Department and a Health Ministry clinic are located!" NAWAWI went there on Oct 30 about 11am. While chowing, he first noticed several cats roaming and eating leftovers on the floor, which he found to be filthy. "Then I started looking around. What I saw made me lost my appetite." He says the stalls were dirty and the eatery's interior appeared it had been neglected for years. "There is even a faint stench of cat poo. "The place was also stuffy
and I couldn't wait to breathe the air outside." NAWAWI claims the other customers seemed oblivious to the poor cleanliness and filth there. "I would expect City Hall to have cleaning service, like that of food courts in the malls or even the highways." He says he cannot understand why the eatery is in a deplorable state with the Health Department just across the road, adjacent to the Health Ministry clinic. "How do we expect City Hall to take care of public hygiene and wellbeing when it can't even check a food court in front of it?" The Hotline Roving Team checked NAWAWI's grouses, and learned the stall operators and cleaning staff there were also unhappy. "The garbage collectors do

An Alam Flora cleaner says he finds it difficult to clean up the premises properly while customers are eating as the latter usually do not like to be disturbed.
"As a result, I can only clean up the place completely in the early mornings and evenings." ● CITY HALL media officer Zurida Hashim says
they have, in fact, inspected the place a few days before NAWAWI went there. "The Health Department had checked the food court on Oct 27 and issued two compounds to the vendors." Zurida says they were for offences, including using dirty aprons to cook as well as filthy kitchen walls and floors. "Four compounds were also issued for unhygienic food preparation, among others." Meanwhile, an Alam Flora spokesperson says their supervisor had investigated the matter on Wednesday. "We had workers, including the two already working there seven days a week, to spruce up the entire food court," she says. "Alam Flora officials also just received a full report on the operation. "
An American in ATM agony JOHN UDOVICH, a US national visiting Malaysia, has had a frustrating time here trying to withdraw money with a local bank's automated teller machines (ATM). He says he tried to take out RM1,500 from his US bank account using a CIMB Bank ATM at a shopping mall in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, about 9pm on Oct 17. "Instead of getting the money, I was issued a receipt saying the ATM was unable to dispense cash. I checked
with another ATM from the bank and it appeared the money was already debited. This was confirmed when I logged into my bank account online later that night." UDOVICH says he was told at the bank's branch office it would take two weeks to a month to investigate and rectify the matter. "I have already been charged about one per centplus in fees and I was told these fees are accessed at my bank in the US end."
He says as he is leaving for Thailand soon, such a thing is very inconvenient to tourists and visitors to Malaysia. "I need to wait 24 hours to withdraw cash from my account as I am at the US$500 a day limit, thanks to the failed transaction. "I also need to follow up with CIMB Bank and my bank in the US a few times regarding getting my money back, and it is not clear how I will be reimbursed or how long it will take."
UDOVICH says the ATM did not indicate to him there was no cash in it, yet it debited his foreign bank account. "I don't see why it needs to take two weeks to one month to sort this matter out as the ATM records everything and the fault is with the CIMB Bank's ATM at this end and not with my bank or the interbank." ● A CIMB Bank spokesperson tells Hotline they regret the inconvenience caused
to the customer when trying to withdraw money from its ATM at Sungei Wang Plaza using his foreign Mastercard. "Upon notification, CIMB Bank has taken immediate steps to rectify the matter and is pleased to inform the amount debited from UDOVICH’s account has been reimbursed on Oct 20. The council is undoubtedly disobeying its own zoning policy and ignoring the fact the area is unsuitable due to lack of running water for cleansing and sanitation. This place is obviously not a stall. It has tables and chairs. It is a complete restaurant. I am
sure nobody would mind a franchised burger stall selling takeaway food in wrapping paper, but this place does not meet that category. — Eina Unheeded warning (Nov 8) ● I HAVE always championed consumerism causes, but I must say the complainant is out of order. Given the mileage and age, it cannot be expected the car would continue to per-

The centre has made an offer, but if both parties cannot agree, a professional mediator's advice be sought and both sides should accept the verdict. The car would perform as best as it
could for its age and be back on road, and the complainant would have his car and no more transport problems, and the garage its reputation. — EthnicMalaysian ● SOUNDS like your clutch is slipping. wake of the suspension. Arab League foreign ministers on Saturday voted 18-22 to suspend Syria over its failure to comply with an agreement to end the crackdown on a nationwide protest movement calling for Assad's resignation. It called for the withdrawal of Arab envoys from Damascus and agreed on sanctions while inviting "all currents in the Syrian opposition to meet at
Arab League headquarters in three days to draw up a joint vision for the coming transitional period". The move won widespread praise in the international community and was hailed by the opposition Syrian National Council, which said it was ready to take part in proposed talks regarding a transitional period. The long-anticipated operation in a city with one of the highest murder rates in the country is part of an official campaign since 2008 to restore security in Rio ahead of the 2014 World Cup and
the 2016 Summer Olympics, which Brazil will host. The private television station Globo reported that one drug trafficker was arrested and that an unspecified quantity of marijuana was seized in Rocinha. Federal police say they were counting on assistance from residents to locate larger caches of drugs and weapons. "We hope that the pacification will not be just about ejecting the drug traffickers but also to bring sanitation, education, health," said Raimundo Benicio de Souda, a 56-year-old community leader known as "Lima". "There are people living (here) among cockroaches, urinating and defecating in a can," Lima said. Globo television reported that narcotraffickers poured oil into the streets of Rocinha in a futile attempt to thwart the movement of police armored vehicles. — AFP

Writing songs 'relaxes' Susilo
DAMASCUS
SYRIAN forces were accused of pressing their deadly crackdown on protest yesterday even as thousands of regime supporters vented their anger a day after the Arab League suspended the country. The governments of France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey issued strong condemnations of President Bashar al-Assad's regime after his supporters attacked their embassies in the

WHILE other national leaders play golf or ride horses to relax, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono says he composes songs. One of his compositions -- on the environment -- was played just before he spoke to business leaders on Saturday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Honolulu, Hawaii. "Every leader anywhere always has a hobby. Some like to ride horses, some like to play golf, some like to go fishing," the 62-year-old retired general said in response to a question. "My hobby is to write write songs, to compose songs. I don't always do it but when I receive the inspiration, when the mood is right... I might write a song." — AFP
World wonders unveiled THE Amazon rainforest, Vietnam's Halong Bay (pic) and Argentina's Iguazu Falls have been named among the world's new seven wonders of nature, according to organisers of a poll. The other four are South Korea's Jeju Island, Indonesia's Komodo, the Philippines' Puerto Princesa Underground River and South Africa's Table Mountain, the New7Wonders foundation said, citing provisional results. Sites that failed to make the cut include Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro, the Dead Sea and the Grand Canyon. The poll has attracted great interest, mobilising celebrities, including Argentinian football star Lionel Messi calling on fans to pick his home country's Iguazu Falls. — AFP

TURKISH warplanes bombed the Qandil border area in Iraqi Kurdistan yesterday for about an hour, a spokesman for the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) separatist group said. Dozdar Hammo said that Turkish jets began bombing the area, in which the PKK has bases, around 11am local time and continued for about an hour. He did not provide any additional details. The Turkish military launched an operation in northern Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region after a PKK attack last month killed 24 soldiers in the town of Cukurca near the Iraqi border, the army's biggest loss since 1993. — AFP

Cool night out with M Store Publika at Dutamas recently turned into a hot party central with The Melium Group’s M Store hosting an exciting fashion show aptly named 'The Cool Night Out' featuring the latest Range Rover Evoque. Held at White Box Publika, it was a chic affair accentuated by a first-hand preview of the much-awaited Range Rover Evoque car along with M Store’s cool collection for Fall 2011. The venue, which is an art gallery, was transformed into a snazzy party venue with the Range Rover wireframe glowing at the centre of the hall inspired by Range Rover’s parties held in New York, Milan and London. The evening kicked off with emcee Elaine Daly introducing the much-anticipated car to the crowd with an eclectic two-minute Range Rover

Vivienne Tam puts ‘Made in China’ on catwalks Like the rags she turned into clothes for her siblings in Hong Kong, Chinese-American designer Vivienne Tam has lifted the Made-in-China label out of the discount bins and onto the world’s catwalks.
Many artists claim to blend Eastern and Western styles, but few have done it better than Tam. Her China-infused work has graced the likes of Julia Roberts, Beyonce and Madonna, and last year, Forbes magazine named her among the 25 Top Chinese-Americans in Business. Looking back at the start of
her career in the early 1980s — when she roamed Manhattan selling garments directly out of a bag — she said it was tough convincing US fashion houses to believe in her talents. “When I first arrived in America, people thought there were no Chinese designers. You looked around and only saw American and European brands,” Tam told AFP.
“They thought you wanted to sell cheap T-shirts, cheap things. I said ‘no’.” She set out to “change how people looked at China” and remind them of her homeland’s historic brilliance in design and craftsmanship. “Changing perspectives, people’s minds, is hard. It takes time but it can be done,” said Tam, wearing a lace dress, a
Swan clocks 800 skydives
EAST MEETS WEST: Hong Kong designer Tam's China-infused work has graced Julia Roberts, Beyonce and Madonna
Heather Swan admits skydiving used to terrify her — it took her about 50 jumps before she stopped feeling sick to the stomach. But as she sweeps back her long blonde hair to clap on a fire-engine red helmet and walks towards the small plane which she will shortly jump from at about 3,900 metres), the 49-year-old exudes excitement. “I think women find
these sports more scary than men to start with and that was definitely my experience — I was very afraid,” she laughs. Swan now has some 800 skydives to her name and must be one of the few grandmothers in the world who BASE jumps, a more extreme sport in which divers leap from tall structures — Buildings, Antennas, Spans and Earth (cliffs). Such is her commitment she earned the world record, with husband Glenn Singleman,
for the highest BASE jump (exit point) after they leapt off Mount Meru at an altitude of 6,604 metres in the Himalayas in 2006. Swan believes that challenging her fears has made her more confident and that skydiving, once the preserve of ex-military males, is empowering more women like her as they become increasingly involved in the sport. “I’ve seen women who only ever did one jump, one tan-
quilted coat and black suede shoes. “I really wanted to change how people looked at China, to show that China is not only a manufacturer, that we, too, have designers. I had to prove that what was made in China was good.” Her determination paid off. Today, her shops can be found in many major cities around
the world and her East-meetsWest style — featuring motifs such as fat-faced Chairman Maos and lotus flowers — has broken into the mainstream. Tam’s autumn 2011 collection is dappled with cascading sleeves, pagoda-shaped shoulder pads, high collars and embroidered dragons, themes borrowed from ancient Chinese Kun opera. — AFP

dem jump and it had a transformative effect on them,” she explains. Swan herself is little different, taking up skydiving
after turning 40 and meeting Singleman. She quit her management consulting job and is now a fixture in the community. — AFP

ECCO, the Danish shoemaker and retailer, took another step in the right direction with the opening of their first outlet in Malaysia at The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley City, Kuala Lumpur, last month. The brand is no stranger to Malaysian shores having made its first appearance in 2009. Working with Vietmaland, distributor of ECCO in Malaysia, they have now put their best foot forward with a dedicated outlet to strengthen their presence here. Vietmaland managing director Francis Chan said they were inspired by the brand’s founder, Karl Toosbuy’s, simple philosophy of combining form and function to produce comfortable but trendy Scandinavian-styled and designed shoes. “It is satisfying because the brand takes ownership as a major shoe manufacturer in overseeing every single step of the shoemaking process. And their employees are the driving force behind great innovations. They are passionate about crafting materials and inventing technologies to make shoes fit and perform better for consumers,” said Chan. “We are grateful for the strong support shown by our principal, partners and customers over the years. Today, we are creating another interesting milestone in our business development plan to showcase the brand’s true Scandinavian

By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my
HOCKEY fans are rejoicing thanks to the heroics of the Project 2013 squad in the just concluded Sultan of Johor Cup U-21 tournament at Taman Jaya Stadium in Johor Baru. This adds to last year's achievement of the senior side who had reached the final of the Guangzhou Asian Games. The crowd throughout the duration of the tournament was nothing but encouraging. They not only spurred the boys on but also put the attendance of the recently concluded Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) to shame. The league, which ran from September till end of October, had only a handful of spectators in attendance. In fact, the accumulated attendance of the entire league still falls short of the average attendance

Singapore to host 2015 Games
SINGAPORE will host the biennial Southeast Asian Games in 2015 after competition organisers agreed to hand the regional showpiece to the city State after a 22 year absence. The Sea Games Federation agreed to award the 28th edition of the competition to Singapore, the Singapore Straits Times reported, paving the way for the construction of a long awaited new sports hub. The city State was slated to host the 2013 Games but it withdrew from the race because of delays in building
the sports hub. The Federation met in t h e In d on e s i an c it y of Palembang — which is currently co-hosting the 2011 Games with Jakarta. After two-and-a-half days, Indonesia leads the table with 40 gold medals and an overall haul of 89 medals, well ahead of secondplaced Thailand who have 20 golds. Military-ruled Myanmar said it will host the 2013 Games, marking the first time in four decades that the competition has been held in the nation. — AFP

Faeez Ibrahim. He said it could be demotivating at times when playing in the MHL but the drive to succeed as a hockey player
pushes him. "I'm happy with the crowd at the Sultan of Johor Cup. Believe it or not, they kept us going and played a big role in our success," he said. The boys, being groomed for the Junior World Cup in 2013, defied odds to win the inaugural tournament. Big names like Australia and South Korea graced the tournament. The Aussies looked like favourites from the beginning but Malaysia, led by Faeez, had other plans. No one gave Malaysia a chance as they were missing the services of two key players — Faisal Saari and Firhan Ashaari. The duo were not released by national coach Tai Beng Hai, who had opted to keep them in camp for the Champions Challenge Tournament that will be held in South Africa later this month.

The boys only made it harder for themselves after losing the opening match to Australia and then drawing to New Zealand in the second match. What followed was just a fairytale — Malaysia overcame the mighty Koreans, Pakistan and India in style. The Malaysians were within a brink of defeat in the final against Australia on Saturday. However, Faeez stepped up to equalise via a penalty corner in the 69th minute to force the match into extra-time. Five minutes into extratime, Faeez scored the winner from another penalty corner which sent the crowd into a frenzy. The match ended 3-2 with Fitri Saari scoring the other goal. Ma l aysi a's go a l ke ep er Hazrul Faiz was named Manof-the-Match after his heroics singlehandedly saved Malaysia on many occasions.

With (Ng) Yan Yee, I think our col l ab orat ion has improved," said Mun Yee, who has been partnering Yan Yee in the event for the past two years. In the Laos Sea Games in 2009, Mun Yee clinched the gold medal in the event with a different partner, Cheong Jun Hong. Thank God, no Falcao Sabella relieved Colombia's prolific striker is injured
UNDER-FIRE Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella (pic) confessed it is a relief his side will not be pitting their wits against Colombia star striker Radamel Falcao in their clash on Wednesday (5am). The Atletico Madrid hitman was forced to pull out of Leonel Alvarez's squad last Wednesday due to contracting a strain in his left abductor muscle in training, something that has come as welcome news to the 57-yearold Sabella, who also made it clear that he was not personal in his sentiments. Argentina are desperate to return to winning ways against Colombia, when they travel to Barranquilla, having only drawn with lowly Bolivia at home last Friday. Ace attacker and skipper Lionel Messi. A Marcelo Moreno strike in the 56th minute put Bolivia ahead in the game, but Ezequiel Lavezzi responded just four minutes later with a goal of his own to make sure the two sides
shared the spoils at Estadio Monumental. The result puts Argentina second in the table with just four points from three games. Messi believes it will be crucial to put an end to the two-game winless streak against the Colombians. "Another match is coming up quickly, we know it will be very hard, just like every match away from home," said Messi. "But this time we cannot fail, we have to win no matter what, after what happened against Bolivia." The Barcelona superstar noted Bolivia's goal came against the run of play and said his side are looking

"What we want the most is to play well and win, especially at home, so that everything gets easier and we can work calmly. The draw makes everything harder, the days left to prepare for the match against Colombia will be hard to work."

Hamilton wins Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
LEWIS HAMILTON produced a near flawless performance yesterday when he took full advantage of the early retirement of double world champion Sebastian Vettel to win a sizzling "day-night" Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Driving his McLaren with measured assurance and great speed, the 26-year-old Englishman dominated from the second corner of the opening lap to the finish as he claimed his third win of a troubled season and 17th of his career. He started second, but took the lead within a few hundred metres when 24-year-old German Vettel's Red Bull suffered a puncture to his right rear tyre and forced him to swerve off the Yas Marina circuit. Hamilton streaked by and took a lead he relinquished

AMERICAN golf star Phil Mickelson said it was "inevitable" that Tiger Woods would get back to his best after the troubled former No 1 came close to breaking his two-year title drought. Mickelson, who finished tied 33rd at the Barclays Singapore Open, said he had seen firsthand that the 14-time Major champion's game was coming back together. Woods, whose ranking slumped to 58, was a second round leader at the Australian
Open in Sydney and he carded five-under 67 on the last day to finish two shots back from winner Greg Chalmers. "I've played with him a couple of times throughout the year, watched him hit it and you can tell that his swing speed has come back," Mickelson said. "So I don't know when it will all click and he'll be back to his normal self but I feel like it's inevitable that he will get back there because he seems to keep getting better and better." Mickelson, a four-time Major
winner who will next year be inducted into golf 's Hall of Fame, will join Woods in Melbourne for this week's Presidents Cup team where the United States will take on the Internationals. The world No 11 did not know if he would be paired with Woods but he said he felt ready to help the Americans claim a fourth consecutive title after returning to action after a six-week break. "I played well today. I didn't score as well as I probably
played," he said. Woods was also encouraged by his showing in Sydney, in which he showed glimpses of his old form and threatened to win for the first time since the 2009 Australian Masters. "I had the lead at Augusta (Masters) on the Sunday, that's the last time I've been in that spot, so it's been a long time," Woods said in Sydney. "Unfortunately, I haven't played a lot of tournaments in between, but it was great to be out there and I had a chance.
I didn't post the number I needed." Barca eyeing Song
ARSENAL midfielder Alex Song is a target for European champions Barcelona. The 24-year-old is seen as the ideal replacement for Mali international Seydou Keita, who plans to quit Nou Camp next June. Song has impressed Gunners' manager Arsene Wenger this season and Arsenal have already made one attempt to secure the Cameroon international on a longer deal. There are still more than three years to run on his current contract but Wenger views Song as a major asset as his versatility has seen him play him in both central defence and midfield. Arsenal's initial offer was rejected — but Wenger is determined and is certain to come back in an attempt to keep Song for another four years at least. If Song refuses the offer, Barca are ready to swoop next summer. They are ready to pay more than £15 million (RM 75.8m) and manager Josep "Pep" Guardiola will first talk to former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas. Fabregas — who moved to Barca from Arsenal for £35 million in the summer — rates his former teammate highly so that will tempt Guardiola. Song is reluctant to uproot his family from London, but might well be tempted by the once in a lifetime chance to play for the team currently rated the best in world football.

England midfielder cherishes special win over Spain ENGLAND'S match-winner Frank Lampard believes his teammates proved a point after beating world and European champions Spain 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday. The Three Lions were the rare underdogs on home soil and few expected them to secure a positive result. However, England dug deep, coped well for long periods without possession and defended superbly. Lampard knows England were on the back foot for long periods, but he could not fault his teammates' commitment. "It was an amazing feeling to walk out as captain against the world champions on Remembrance weekend," said Lampard. "It's a big game for me and the team, and I think we showed something in the match. "Spain dominated possession at times in the game and we've got strides to go forward still. But the desire, the defending and the commitment of the players were brilliant. "We were right tactically. It's like playing Barcelona. If you try and play them at their own game, they are the best at it, and you probably lose the game. We retreated a bit and tried to use the counter-attack and we did it well." Lampard admits he will

not mind if he never skippers England again after his joy at beating the Spanish. "It wasn't the easiest goal I scored considering the way we had to chase around in the first-half and I needed the legs to get up there," he said. "But it was a very exciting goal for me to score, with captaining the team as well. "I've kept the armband. I'll be very proud to keep that one. It might be the last time I captain England. Hopefully, I can do it again. Whatever, I don't care really now. "Now I've worn that armband once at Wembley, it was
very special." E ng l an d c o a c h Fabi o Capello hailed the performance of his younger players following the win. Capello was particularly impressed with the performance of midfielder Jack Rodwell, who was introduced in the 56th minute, whilst also singling out Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Kyle Walker. "The most important thing that I saw this evening was the performance of Rodwell, the performance of Jones, the performance of Welbeck. Really good young players.
Also Walker when he played, he was immediately in the game. "I think these players will be really important for the Euros. They played without fear, with personality on the pitch. Physically and technically I can see they are good to play with the seniors. "We needed to be focusing in every moment of the game and win the ball back wherever possible. "Playing against Spain is a really difficult game because the quality of their players is fantastic. But the most difficult thing when you play against this team is that they press the ball. I think it's important for the squad to find confidence, it is important for the crowd, for the fans, to beat the champions of the world." C ap e l l o a l s o p r a i s e d England's two centrebacks — Joleon Lescott and Phil Jagielka — while he described Scott Parker's midfield performance as "incredible". England play Sweden in another friendly at Wembley on Wednesday (3am) and Capello confirmed that John Terry would return to the starting line-up. He also revealed that Gary Cahill, Daniel Sturridge and Walker would all play a part in the match.

No big deal losing to England, says Mata MIDFIELDER Juan Mata (pic) insists Spain's 1-0 friendly defeat to England at Wembley on Saturday changes nothing in terms of their identity as world and European champions. The visitors created all the play, but it was England's day as captain Frank Lampard's second-half header made all the difference. Mata, however, who had a relatively quiet game after coming on as a substitute for David Silva, believes his side still have quality in abundance to be able to challenge for top honours in Poland and Ukraine in 2012. "Our team have not lost the identity. We tried to play in the way we know and tried
to score, but England scored with their first chance," said the Chelsea star. "England did not surprise us as we know they will be one of the favourites to win Euro 2012 in terms of their history and the squad they have. We know that our last two friendlies have not gone well, but we have done better in official matches." Spain play Costa Rica on Wednesday in their second international friendly of the month. Meanwhile, record breaker and goalkeeper Iker Casillas does not believe England deserved to ruin his celebrations at Wembley. Casillas' appearance on Saturday was his 126th for
Spain — equalling the record previously set by Andoni Zubizarreta. It is an amazing landmark for a player who is still only 30, having made his debut as a teenager against Sweden in 2000. The result rather put a dampener on the occasion, with the Real Madrid goalkeeper insisting England did not do anything to justify their success. "It is a shame we didn't win," he said. "It leaves a bitter taste because, in my personal opinion, it was not the right result. "We created a few more chances than England, who showed their strength at a dead ball situation and managed to convert something.
Other than that, I can't really think that they created anything else throughout the game. "As for the record, it is not something I have ever really thought or spoken about. I suppose if I retired tomorrow, I would realise I had been very fortunate. But at the moment, all I am concerned about is playing Costa Rica." Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said they played very well against England but lacked spark up front. He said his players should not feel disappointed as they could not have given anything more against a determined England side. "It's not a sad result as I believe my team gave all they

Galaxy eyes Beck's replacement LA GALAXY are lining up a shock move for Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard as the perfect choice to replace David Beckham. Beckham is undecided about whether to stay or join Paris St Germain, backed by Qatar's billions and led by director of football Leonardo, his former colleague at AC Milan. He intends to explore every avenue before making his choice but if Galaxy cannot hold on to their big star, their next best move would be to recruit someone of Lampard's stature. The Chelsea midfielder is seen as the perfect Premier League icon to replace Beckham, with Galaxy bosses thought to have discussed a move for him.

Italian trio after United's Nani
INTER MILAN, Juventus and AC Milan will all look to lure Portuguese winger Nani away from Old Trafford in the summer even with two years left on his United contract. All three believe that the 24year-old is looking for a new challenge after spending the last six years in England and sources in Italy believe he can be prised away for around £30 million. Nani has become one of Sir Alex Ferguson's key performers recently, but his form this term has been less consistent. He signed a four-year contract extension in March 2010, but still lags behind their very top earners.

could," he told Television Espanola. "My team played good football and we had many chances during the match, but we just could not score. We played very well and pushed right until the end. England did well too and scored with the only chance they had."
GARETH BALE is being scrutinised by Barcelona scouts amid reports the Catalans are preparing a £35 million bid for the Welshman. Barca chief scout, Albert Valentine, was present at Spurs' 3-1 win over Fulham last Sunday to watch Bale in action. Winger Bale scored and had a hand in Aaron Lennon's goal, but manager Josep "Pep" Guardiola is understood to have a more defensive role in mind for the 22-year-old, who he considers a leftback. However, Guardiola can expect a tough fight to sign Bale from Tottenham, who stood their ground in Chelsea's pursuit of highly-rated playmaker Luka Modric during the summer.

Masked Dutchman Huntelaar eager to face Germans DUTCH striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has said he is eager to play for Holland in Wednesday’s friendly against Germany in Hamburg, despite wearing a mask to protect his broken nose. With 21 goals in 19 games for Bundesliga side Schalke this season, the 28-year-old suffered a broken nose 10 days ago playing for his German club in a Europa League match, but says he is fit to play for the Oranje. “I have got used to playing with the mask. I am not getting any headaches and the swelling around the eyes has gone down,” Huntelaar told German paper die Welt yesterday, having made 48 appearances for the Dutch. “We are being cautious, but games against Germany are always special.” Holland were held to a goalless draw by Switzerland in Amsterdam on Friday, and with Arsenal striker Robin van Persie being rested for the match in Hamburg, Huntelaar is in Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk’s thoughts. “Things look different for this match but it’s only been two weeks since he broke his nose,” said van Marwijk, who guided the Dutch to last year’s World Cup final. There is plenty of history
between the two countries with Germany claiming 13 wins, Holland taking 10 victories with 14 draws since the first encounter in 1910. The most explosive clash between the two nations was in Milan at the 1990 World Cup when Germany beat Holland 2-1 in a bad-tempered quarterfinal. Both Germany’s Rudi Voeller and Holland’s Frank Rijkaard were sent off early in the match after the Dutchman infamously spat at the German striker. “Games against Germany have always had a high priority for me,” said former Bayern Munich captain and current Dutch skipper Mark van Bommel. “I grew up not far away from the German border and I know all about the historical encounters. “There are no such thing as friendly games any more, especially against Germany. “There are a lot of emotions involved.” As well as van Persie, van Marwijk will also be without midfielder Rafael van der Vaart in Hamburg. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder suffered a thigh injury against the Swiss and is back in London. The Dutch were booed by

their own fans in Amsterdam against the Swiss, which Van Marwijk said was unjustified. And the Oranje are eager to get a victory in Hamburg as a marker for next June’s Euro 2012 in Poland and the Ukraine. Meanwhile, van Marwijk revealed that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wanted van Persie out of the squad for both of Holland’s international friendlies. The Gunners captain has made 16 appearances for the
club so far this season and is thought to be suffering from fatigue, and the former Monaco manager was reluctant to allow the forward to play in international friendlies. However, the two bosses were able to reach a compromise whereby the Dutchman was permitted to play to play one game. As a result, van Persie went on to make an appearance in the recent goalless draw with Switzerland and will play no part in the upcoming game against Ger-
many. “Arsene asked me if I could leave Robin out of both games,” van Marwijk told The Sunday Mirror. “I had a good meeting with Wenger and we reached an agreement he would only play on Friday. After that ,we would send him back.” Van Persie is now expected to return to Arsenal with the Gunners set to take on Norwich City in a Premier League game at Carrow Road next weekend. — Agencies

Federer wins maiden Paris Masters title
INTER MILAN, Juventus and AC Milan planning to lure Portuguese ace Nani away from United
>> pg23
A RESURGENT Roger Federer (pic) swept past local favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) to clinch his maiden Paris Masters title yesterday and send a deafening warning to his rivals ahead of the ATP World Tour finals. Swiss third seed Federer, who moved to one shy of Rafa Nadal’s record of 19 Masters titles with a stunning display of sheer brilliance, became only the second player with titles in Roland Garros and Bercy -- the two men’s Paris tournaments. “I’m very happy with my
performance today,” said Federer, who captured his 69th career title from 99 finals, at the courtside. “I’m amazed by how well I played. “I don’t think Jo played a bad match. It’s good to complete the tournament so solidly.” “I’m a bit disappointed that I have not been able to play better,” said Tsonga. “He was better today. He was just too quick.” Federer is now on a 12match winning streak after his title in Basel last week and two Davis Cup wins in
September, going into the ATP World Tour finals at the O2 in London from Nov 2027. Federer had been facing the prospect of failing to win either a Grand Slam or a Masters title for the first year since 2001. His focused, steady attitude contrasted with Tsonga’s muttering and the former world No 1’s sharp first serve proved too much for the sixth seed to handle. Tsonga had two break points in the first game but Federer used his first serve to hold him off.
The Swiss moved 4-0 up after a return sent wide and a double fault earned him a double break as a frustrated Tsonga struggled for ideas in front of a home crowd of 14,500. Federer was already one set up when the clock ticked past the half-hour mark. Tsonga, however, fought back in the second, earning a break point in the fourth game with a sizzling crosscourt passing shot but blew his chance by sending a forehand wide. Tsonga faced a break point in the 10th game but staved
it off at the net and the contest went into tiebreak which Federer comfortably won 7-3. — Reuters
