No acquisition KUALA LUMPUR

but traders unconvinced

By ASRUL HADI ABDULLAH SANI asrul@mmail.com.my THERE will be no land acquisition of Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang buildings for the Klang Valley MY Rapid Transit (KVMRT) project. The project owner, MRT Corporation, will instead dismantle and rebuild the original buildings after construction has ended. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said he was told by MRT Corporation CEO Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid last Monday it would bear the cost and replace any materials broken during the process. “He told me MRT will not acquire the land but during the construction period, it will have to bring down the present buildings but they will rebuild once the project is completed, which means the issue of acquiring the land does not arise,” Nazri said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) yesterday. “During the period when construction is ongoing, MRT will compensate the traders for whatever income they have lost. I have been told by Datuk Azhar that he has met them and MRT is actually waiting for the groups’ response to this.” Nazri said the buildings would be dismantled and stored so that the same materials could be used in re-

NO PLANS FOR DEMOLITION: Heritage buildings in Jalan Sultan will be dismantled and rebuilt building the historical shops. MRT Corp yesterday also issued a statement, stressing there were no plans to acquire or demolish any buildings except for land needed to build an underground tunnel. “We will compensate for any loss of business in the interim and for any demolished buildings,” said the statement. “Further, we are open to an agreement where we will re-build shops for the owners to return to in return for acquisition.” MRT Corp also said it would not realign its route despite strong objections by the traders in Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang.

“We have conducted in-depth research and looked at all the various options, even the ones being bandied around by uninformed parties. We don’t make decisions such as this without through, proper evaluation. The alignment is the most optimal and we will not change it,” it said. In an immediate reaction, the Committee of Preserving Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang said it was not convinced the tunnel could be completed in six months, and was also sceptical on how MRT Corp planned to rebuild the demolished buildings (see page 2). MRT Corp will begin its tunneling process for its underground

line in the second quarter of 2014 and the affected tenants will have to move out for six months. On Wednesday, Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang traders formed a committee to pressure MRT Corp into considering realigning the MRT’s Sungai Buloh-Kajang line. Called the Committee of Preserving Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang, it is supported by former Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and DAP Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun as advisers. The committee wants the MRT line re-routed from Jalan Sultan to Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and for the new route to be integrated with the LRT Pasar Seni station and KTMB line and the Puduraya bus terminal. Ong had said committee members met with MRT Corp last week but the officials “shot down” the owners’ realignment proposals. Nazri, however, said the MRT realignment had become a non-issue as the demands by the traders were met in the new proposal. “They are protesting against the alignment because they were worried that their land will be acquired. Now their land will not be acquired. Two, they were worried about what is going to happen because their business is there. “But Datuk Azhar told me he is prepared to pay them compensation until the time the station is ready. So the issue of realignment does not arise.”

POLICEMEN manning a roadblock at Taman Gasing Indah in Section 5 here caught a Mat Rempit who had a parang with him on Wednesday. In the incident at about 1.35pm, the Mat Rempit, who was riding a motorcycle without a number plate, sped into the neighbourhood manned by roundthe-clock private security guards. He tried to evade the roadblock near Jalan 5/69 but uniformed police and plainclothes cops in the residential area noticed him and gave chase. The motorcyclist tried to throw away a parang before being caught. Petaling Jaya OCPD ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed said police were investigating whether the suspect was linked to a group of Mat Rempit hooligans who terrorised security guards there on Sept 26. “We served the suspect a summons for riding recklessly,” he said, adding that the suspect was subsequently released. “If there is evidence he had used the parang for criminal purposes, we will charge him.” Arjunaidi said the roadblocks would continue at Taman Gasing Indah. “The most important thing is preventing any more untoward incidents in the residential area,” he said. “The Mat Rempit usually come on Saturday nights and the police presence will deter them and ensure the safety of residents here,” he said. On Oct 4, The Malay Mail frontpaged a report that a group of Mat Rempit had thrown stones at the security guards manning their guard post at Jalan 5/69 on Sept 26 at 1.24pm. The youths also stole one of the guard’s mobile phone and attempted to extort him. Residents feared for their safety following the attack, as the guard post and boom gate was the residents only line of defence against intruders. Police then conducted a highly visible roadblock on Oct 2, much to the dismay of residents who felt the police should have laid an ambush for the Mat Rempit who now appear to be laying low.

We don't need more highways, says Pua DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua is unhappy with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's announcement on new highway projects in Budget 2012. He said this is because none of the highway projects announced in the Budget speech had begun "and yet new projects are being announced". "While we welcome the provision for new infrastructure projects, the credibility of these announcements are in doubt because the six 'high impact' highway projects announced in last year's Budget speech have not taken off," he told a Press conference at the Parliament lobby yesterday. "In the Prime Minister's reply yesterday to my oral question on the status of the highway projects, he said the projects are still being evaluated and only some received in-principle approval. "The projects which received in-principle approval by the Cabinet are still under study by government agencies. None of these projects have been awarded." Pua, who is the MP for Petaling Jaya Utara, said the highway projects announced last year were Lebuhraya Bertingkat Ampang-Pandan-Cheras, Lebuhraya Guthrie-Damansara, Lebuhraya Damansara-Petaling Jaya, Lebuhraya Pantai Barat (Banting-Taiping), Lebuhraya Sungai Dua-Juru and Lebuhraya Senawang-KLIA. He said the highway projects as well as major road works announced this year were Lebuhraya Pantai Timur JaborKuala Terengganu, Lebuhraya Pantai Barat (Banting-Taiping), Lebuhraya Segamat-Tangkat, Lebuhraya Central Spine and Kota Marudu-Ranau road.

Committee unconvinced by new proposal, insists MRT line be realigned

TRADERS have given a resounding "no" to the Klang Valley MY Rapid Transit (KVMRT) project owner’s latest proposal and insisted that the Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) MRT line be realigned. The Committee of Preserving Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang’s chairman, Tan Yew Sing, was sceptical if the latest proposal was studied or a "quick fix" by MRT Corporation. “We are concerned over whether MRT’s proposal is a quick fix or not and it will not be easy to convince the stakeholders who are not limited to shop owners but the KL folk in general," Tan told The Malay Mail. “We are not convinced the tunnel can be completed in six months. We are also sceptical about how they plan to rebuild

demolished buildings by using the original materials. The buildings will not be authentic. We need more convincing." Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said yesterday MRT Corp would not acquire any land but would instead dismantle and rebuild the original buildings after construction had ended. MRT Corp also released a statement yesterday stressing there were no plans to acquire or demolish buildings except for land needed for an underground tunnel. It said it would not realign its route despite objections by traders in Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang.

Tan said the committee would no longer entertain any more meetings with MRT Corp. “MRT has made their stance clear. We will gather support and come out with a memorandum to the highest authority (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak),” he said. The committee is campaigning for the MRT line to be re-routed from Jalan Sultan to Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and for the new route to be integrated with the LRT Pasar Seni station and KTMB line and the Puduraya bus terminal. The committee is supported by former Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and DAP Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun (pic),

who are its advisers. Fong asked why MRT Corp was adamant in refusing to consider the proposed realignment. "Jalan Tan Cheng Lock is better alignment compared to Bukit Bintang and the new alignment

would not affect traders. I don't know why they still prefer the Jalan Sultan route. They must have a hidden agenda," he said. Fong also asked how MRT Corp was going to calculate the losses suffered by the traders during the six months. He said the buildings would lose their historical value even if it they were dismantled and rebuilt using the same materials. “Those affected are not stall owners but property owners who inherited the stake from their forefathers a century ago. My concern is whether the building structures, old as they are, can withstand the vibration of tunneling. “Of course, we can rebuild the structuresbut would you still call them heritage buildings?”

Bar wants death penalty abolished Increase in Bus Express Transit passengers

THE Bar Council called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to abolish the death penalty as part of his reform agenda. Its president, Lim Chee Wee, said Najib must have the political will and not adhere to popular opinion on the matter. “Some political figures may think we need public opinion to move ahead first before a political decision is made," he told a press conference after a public forum on the abolition of the death penalty yesterday. "Some will say there is need for a referendum but I think the Prime Minister should have the strength and courage to lead us on this issue." Lim said governments had repealed capital punishment with-

out resorting to referendums. He said the discussion on the death penalty must be done objectively as research showed it had not been a deterrent for crime prevention. “What are the reasons for people to be still in favour of the death penalty? A lot of the reasons are emotive and emotional. People don’t realise statistics show that when we introduced mandatory death penalty for the Dangerous Drugs Act, drug addiction actually went up. “So we need to raise issues such as these for public understanding and awareness." Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz stressed the importance of public movement against the

death penalty. “I must tell you this (abolishing death penalty) has not been discussed in the Cabinet. If there is any move towards it, then it has to come from the public," he told reporters earlier. "Just like the Internal Security Act (ISA). When you have members of the public wanting to abolish ISA, then we (the government) will follow the majority. Public opinion is important. At the moment, you can’t really see whether they favour abolition." Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein told the Dewan Rakyat recently 441 people had been sentenced to death since 1960. As of February this year, 696 were on death row awaiting execution.

THE Bus Express Transit (BET) service is enjoying a steady increase in the number of passengers since it was launched on July 1. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, describing the initiative as a success, said BET buses had been getting encouraging response with a total of 2,564 passengers using the service. "We see an increase of 263 per cent, which translates to 214 passengers daily in August, compared to only 59 in July," he said. "The buses are presently servicing eight areas in the

Klang Valley which are less frequented by other services." Kong paid a working visiting to the Semenyih Sentral BET8 (Semenyih-Pasar Seni) station yesterday. He took a RapidKL bus through the BET8 route from Semenyih at 6.30am and arrived at Pasar Seni about an hour-and-ahalf later. Kong said work on the Last Stop Hub (Hentian Akhir Bandar or HAB) was expected to be completed by March 25.

Failure to return borrowed car leads to arrest of wanted criminals TWO fugitives, high on the police wanted list for rape and murder committed seven and 12 years ago, were finally caught after a simple act of failing to return a lady friend’s car. City police chief DCP Datuk Mohmad Salleh said the pair had borrowed the woman’s car under the pretext of using it to send a friend to a clinic on Oct 5. He said the 69-year-old managing director of a hotel lodged a police report when

"Hi, I’m Captain America." This was the signature left on notes plastered on the smashed windscreens of cars parked in Sungai Way and Sea Park last week, courtesy of a man who was convinced he was a "superhero". The 44-year-old man, who is believed to be mentally unstable, had gone on a windscreen smashing spree, damaging at least eight cars over the last three months, but oddly, did not take any valuables from the cars. His "powers", however, deserted him when police visited his home in Damansara on Sunday after receiving a tip-off. Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohamad said their checks showed the man had a history of mental illness. The man was released soon after questioning and police are now waiting for a psychiatric report on him.

her calls to the mobile phone of one of the men went unanswered. Police traced the whereabouts of the vehicle through the global positioning system (GPS) tracking device installed in her car. The men, aged 37 and 33, were detained in Masai, Johor, about 11am the same day. Mohmad said both men

had fake identity cards and a fingerprint check later revealed their true identity. The 37-year-old man is wanted in connection with the murder of 18-year-old See Sheau Fang, whose body was found buried in a hole in front of a house in Taman Perwira, Kuala Selangor, in February 2004. He subsequently escaped from Tanjung Sepat police station where he was being held under remand. Mohmad said the man,

who was also a suspect in a rape case, has been handed over to Selangor police. The 34-year-old man was wanted in connection with another rape case in 1999. Mohmad said police hope to solve several other crime cases involving the duo. It is not known if the men had committed crimes together. Police believe the men had been hiding in a neighbouring country all this while and had made occasional trips to Malaysia.

Beggar gang from China picked up CITY police detained seven disabled China nationals, some legless and armless, set loose on the streets by a beggar gang from China with links here. The arrests once again bring to the fore a worrying situation of beggar gangs trafficking in cripples for profit. A local taxi driver suspected of ferrying the beggars, all men aged between 27 and 38, to night markets and along Jalan Bukit Bintang is also in police custody. City CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said police were looking for a China national who brought the seven men here on social visit visas. He is also said to be holding their passports. Ku said police have sought the assistance of the Embassy of China and Interpol to trace the man, believed to be the gang leader. Ku said the beggars either had their hands or legs amputated due to sickness and accidents or were born with handicaps. He said it was unlikely the

gang had deliberately crippled the foreigners and forced them to beg. It is believed the men had been picked up from homes for the disabled and off the streets in China before being ‘trained’ and brought here. Ku said the beggars manipulate a giving society by singing tear jerker songs and displaying their disabilities in public. He said they earned between RM500 and RM1,000 per day by working in a group of either

two or three. They worked till the wee hours of the morning seven days a week. Their three-month long activities came to a halt yesterday when police, acting on a tip-off, nabbed them and the cabbie at a budget hotel in Jalan Sarawak, off Jalan Pudu at 3am. The taxi driver was apparently hired by the gang leader to send the beggars to various drop points from the budget hotel in Jalan Pudu.

THE great grandson of housewife S. Thanaletchumy, 64, who was brutally murdered in her house in Kampung Pasir Baru recently, has emerged as the prime suspect in the case. Pol i c e pi cke d up t he 30-year-old suspect, said to be a drug addict, while he was sleeping outside a house in Semenyih on Wednesday afternoon. Kajang police chief ACP Abdul Rashid Wahab said the suspect’s family had abandoned him a long time ago. Robbery is believed to be the motive for the murder, he said. Thanaletchumy was stabbed in the throat before being bludgeoned and then dragged into the bathroom. The killer tried to make it look as though she had

drowned in the bathtub after accidentally knocking her head on the edge of the tub. Only a pair of earrings and some cash were missing from a cupboard in the house. Rashid said the suspect may have thought there would be jewellery in the house as three days earlier, the granny had held a grand Ruthu Sadungu (coming of age) ceremony for her 13-year-old granddaughter. He said the suspect had targeted the jeweleries presented to the girl by their relatives. It is believed the suspect had become angry with the lack of loot and killed the granny out of frustration. Rashid said four men, including three Bangladeshis arrested in connection with murder, have been released.

Stalker-robber rapes Filipina JUST two months out of prison for a drug offence, a 19-year-old spent two weeks stalking a house — and ended up in bigger trouble for robbery and raping a Filipina maid. Two weeks earlier, the suspect broke into a house in Taman Jaya Baru, Cheras, when the victim, who is in her late 20s, was alone and threatened her with a knife. After taking RM8,000 in valuables and cash found in the home, he tied the maid's hands with a raffia string and raped her. Kajang police chief ACP Abdul Rashid Wahab said medical reports from the Kajang Hospital confirmed the maid was raped. The suspect had apparently studied the house and its

surroundings before breaking in. He was arrested by police a week after the incident at a dadah haunt in Lorong Haji Taib in Kuala Lumpur following a tip-off. Rashid said the suspect had previous police records and was released from prison two months ago after serving a six-month sentence for a drug related case. "The suspect is also highly wanted for a drug case in Selayang. We are investigating to see if he is linked to other reported cases around Kajang and Cheras." Police also recovered a computer notebook, bottles of perfume and traveling bags from the suspect who will be remanded until Saturday.

Cosmic reading card does not reveal robbers' unlucky day

A GANG of Indonesians used a perangka card (cosmic reading practiced in Indonesia) to determine a good day and to ensure the coast was clear for a parang- wielded robbery. The card, however, did not tell them they would be unlucky the following day as they were arrested. The gang, comprising four

men in their 30s, relied heavily on the card to determine whether it was the right time for them to break into a house in Batu 14, Ulu Langat. Kajang police chief ACP Abdul Rashid Wahab said the suspects had already targeted the family of six and was just waiting for the right moment to strike after consulting

the card. "They had initially planned to strike a few days before but since the card showed it was not the right time to do so, the suspects waited," said Abdul Rashid. He said the gang had also observed and studied the family's lifestyle and movem e nt s b e fore pl an n i ng

the strike. In the Oct 6 incident, the gang entered the family's home by breaking the kitchen door using a 14kg gas cylinder. Upon hearing the noise, the family woke up and came face-to-face with the parangweilding robbers. After tying the victims

with raffia strings, the gang ransacked the house and fled with RM8,000 worth of jewellery, cash, gadgets and some pawn shop documents. The following day, based on a tip-off and the victims' descriptions, a police team tracked down and arrested three suspects near Sungai Chua.

All the stolen items were recovered and the perangka card was also seized from one of the suspects. Abdul Rashid said the suspects were also believed to be involved in 15 break-ins and robberies in Kajang. The suspects are being remanded until today to facilitate investigations.

12 metres too far No public hearing because project lies just outside 20m ruling By MEENA LAKSHANA meena@mmail.com.my

TWELVE proved to be an unlucky number for the residents of Taman Nirwana in Ampang. The necessity for a public hearing regarding a highdensity residential and commercial project called Ken City was trumped by an extra 12m between the development site and the residents' existing houses. While the Town and Country Planning Act 1976 stipulates that a public hearing must be called for a development to occur within 20m from houses, the project will occur on a 1ha plot along Jalan Nirwana 38 and 39, located 32m away from the homes, according to Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) public relations officer Hajjah Norhayati Ahmad. The matter concerning a lack of a public hearing on the development was raised by the Taman Nirwana Phase Two Residents' Association to The Malay Mail. Residents from five housing areas — Taman Nirwana, Kampung Pandan, Taman Putra Sulaiman, Angsana Hilir, Taman Dagang and Taman Utama — are objecting to the project consisting of two blocks of service apartments, each with 16 floors, and four blocks of shop houses, between three

"But MPAJ only held two dialogue sessions with residents, one in October last year and the other in May this year," he said, adding the project was approved in July. Residents feared the project would lead to indiscriminate

parking, flooding and exacerbation of traffic congestion. Thomas said although the project would have two parking lots for each apartment unit, the residents would have visitors and their vehicles would encroach upon the narrow neighbourhood roads. He said water from the construction site was being directed into the monsoon drain along Jalan Nirwana 46, raising concerns of floods. "The monsoon drain was

designed to accommodate water from the residential area, not a high volume of water from a construction site," he said. Taman Nirwana Phase Two Residents' Association vicechairman Ismail Majid said the residential project would utilise Jalan Nirwana 38 as an entry and exit point. "The road is already congested as it is the main outlet to the Middle Ring Road II (MRRII), the Duke highway and Ampang Point," he said. Ismail said although the road would be widened from two to three lanes, the construction of a 16ft-wide pathway in front of houses in Jalan Nirwana 38 would be cumbersome to the residents. "The residents will not be able to put up tents when they want to have functions," he said. A resident, Chow Kwai Lam, 69, said he was against the project as the plan also indicated that a retention pond would be built facing his house in Jalan Nirwana 39. In an email, Norhayati said the developer, Sri Seltra Sdn Bhd, was required to upgrade and widen existing roads, including Jalan Nirwana 38 and 39. "The developer would also provide adequate parking lots according to the Selangor government's planning manual," she said.

'Friendly' protest march by blind By HAMZAH NAZARI hamzah@mmail.com.my

A PECULIAR sight greeted Brickfields residents yesterday when representatives of the blind community, who were protesting against the festive traders who had set up stalls on the tactile walkways they use, ended up side-byside with the ones they were supposed to be protesting against. Ajong Sidim, 55, a blind legal executive, and G. Gunabalan, 56, a partially-blind businessman, were joined in the "protest march" by Brickfields Indian Petty Traders Association Kuala Lumpur chairman Gobal Rajee and several association members. of Gobal and the association members. During the walk, stall owners elsewhere were also seen helping blind pedestrians along. Although there was moderate police presence in the area, the march ended on a quiet note, with the participants

returning to their own business after that. The Malay Mail had previously highlighted the plight of the blind in Brickfields, which led to the Federal Territory Ministry instructing traders to move off the tactile walkway to clear a path for the blind.

Three quit smoking because of loved ones ONE blames himself for his wife’s pregnancy complications, another for his newborn child’s breathing problems and a third followed his dying father’s wishes. The trio were among 10 men recognised by Kuala Lumpur City Hall for giving up smoking. Here, they share their stories of how they stopped smoking because of their loved ones. ● Mohd Naim Khan Nasir Khan, a 27-year-old City Hall administrative staff member, has been married for three years and said his has wife miscarried twice. The first time was during their first year of marriage. Four months into her second pregnancy and soon after her mother died, she miscarried yet again. “I buried the foetus myself,” said Naim. Naim blamed himself for what happened as he had smoked near his wife when she was pregnant. He said he started smoking when he was 12 years old and continued for 15 years. He finally quit around six months ago after taking part in City Hall’s "Klinik Quit" programme. He began to lose his appetite for cigarettes and though his friends kept on offering them to him, he was only being able to take one of two puffs before throwing them away. He said his wife and mother supported his decision and he has found that he is much more energetic now. ● Ha i r u l N i z a m Ab d Rahman, 37, quit smoking seven months ago under the same programme after starting at the age of 14. His father, a smoker for 45 years, succumbed to heart problems and kidney failure on Sept 12 last year at the age of 65. On his deathbed, Hairul said he father asked him to quit smoking. “He told me not to follow in his footsteps but he did not get to see his final wishes fulfilled,” he said. Hairul eventually obeyed

his father’s dying wishes and, since kicking he habit, feels much healthier and stronger. He thanked City Hall for the help and support ● Mohd Muzammer Shah said he first tried smoking at the age of 13. He said he initially stole his father’s menthol cigarettes because they smelt like chewing gum. His father found out and belted him but this did not deter him. Instead, Muzammer said he became a secret smoker all through high school but began smoking more during Form 5. “I started off as an ‘amateur’ and only became a ‘professional’ when I started working,” he said. “Since I was buying them with my own money, I started smoking cigarettes in public.” He switched from smoking full-flavour cigarettes, which irritated his throat, to smoking ‘lights’. Instead of helping, the switch made things worse as he ended up smoking two packets a day instead of one. He and his wife were blessed with a child on May 3 last year. A few months later, the baby began having breathing problems which, he said, were due to second-hand smoke. He quit smoking through the programme and has not had a cigarette in over a year. Muzammer said his wife is happier now. “You have to make a commitment to really quit,” he said. The City Hall "Klinik Quit" programme was started in 2006 with the intention of helping City Hall staff members quit smoking. Since last year, 98 staff members signed up although only 12 quit smoking for more than six months. Of the 12, one relapsed while another was not present for the award ceremony held to honour them. City Hall deputy directorgeneral Datuk Normah Malik presented the awards, saying she hoped the ceremony would influence more staff members to take part in the programme.

PJ council to curb indiscriminate dumping and parking in factory area K. SUBRAMANIAM has been working at a drinksmanufacturing plant at the Section 19 industrial zone in Petaling Jaya for more than a decade without any major hassle, but this changed a year ago. "There was a big rubbish bin placed at Jalan 19/1," he says. "When the nearby food stall operators started burning garbage in the bin and a 'No Dumping' signboard was vandalised, the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council removed both items about a year ago." SUBRAMANIAM says a much smaller bin has since been placed there and it is now surrounded by garbage thrown around it, creating a stench, and attracting pests like flies and rodents. He tells the Hotline Roving Team another daily headache is the rampant indiscriminate parking, causing a traffic congestion along the road. "I want the council to clean up the area and increase action against illegal parking."

assurances, but hopes it will continue to keep an eye and increasing enforcement in the area to ensure cleanliness and a better traffic flow.

Online comments www.mmail.com.my In 'cold' blood (Oct 10) ● THERE is always a need for blood. I would think the difference of a few minutes for the donation drive to begin is nothing compared to saving lives. It is not that we are paid to donate. We are giving hospitals a valuable service of saving lives, and the staff are worried about a few minutes? If people are to have this type of mentality, we will all be dead waiting for a donor's blood! It is this selfish attitude of one that

leads others to think such a behaviour is acceptable. — PJ Princess Roadside parking squeeze (Oct 10) ● THE cars parked beside the road have made the already narrow stretch even narrower. There are also frequent cases of cars being parked out of the yellow line, creating a bottleneck. Go there and you will see how bad it is. The best way to curb the problem is to get

third-party tow truck operators who will get commission for every vehicle they have taken away. They also need to take photographs of these cars to prove the drivers are parking indiscriminately. — abugaga Messy maintenance (Oct 13) ● THIS is a typical Malaysian attitude where work is always done halfway to be left for the next party to finish it. After trimming the trees, I am sure

it is not hard for them to clean the debris, too. Why leave the work half done? What is it with this attitude we Malaysians have? Are we not a hygienic nation? Throwing mattresses and garden refuse into a drain? I once saw a driver throwing an empty drinking water bottle out of his moving car on the Federal Highway. This is shameful! Buildings are getting taller in this country but apparently not our minds. — boomboom

'Dragon King' marries commoner in reclusive Bhutan HAPPY: Wangchuck and his new bride during the ceremony that was broadcast live

BHUTAN'S "Dragon King" married a young commoner in an ancient Himalayan monastic fortress yesterday, sipping a chalice of ambrosia symbolising eternal life in a Buddhist wedding that has transfixed a reclusive kingdom slowly embracing globalisation. King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck wore a crown adorned with a raven's head during the sumptuous ceremony in this 17th-century

fortress, as 21-year-old student Jetsun Pema, daughter of an airline pilot, received a crown embroidered with silk. In a nation of 700,000 people where television was only introduced in 1999, the ceremony was broadcast live. Thousands of people, dressed in traditional colored robes, stood outside. Some monks chanted, others hit drums, as white incense drifted through the morning mist.

Oxford-educated Wangchuck, 31, is revered as this insular nation slowly embraces democracy after his father abdicated in 2006 to introduce parliamentary elections. "I am happy. I have been waiting quite some time," the king told reporters after the ceremony. "She is a wonderful human being, intelligent. Her and I share one big thing in common — love and passion for art." — Reuters

Rajaratnam sentenced to 11 years in prison RAJ RAJARATNAM (pic), a self-made hedge fund tycoon convicted in the biggest Wall Street trading scandal in a generation, was ordered yesterday to serve 11 years in prison, one of the longest sentences on record in an insidertrading case but less than prosecutors had sought. Prosecutors had asked US District Judge Richard Holwell in Manhattan to impose a sentence of at least 19½ years on the Galleon Group founder, the central figure in a sweeping criminal case that touched

some of America's top companies, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc, Intel Corp, IBM and the elite McKinsey & Co consultancy. Defence lawyers had argued t hat R ajaratnam deserved a much shorter prison term, citing unspecified health problems and arguing that the government was pushing for a punishment more appropriate to a violent criminal. Radiohead's 'Paranoid Android' voted best song R ADIOHEAD'S Paranoid Android has been named as NME.COM's choice as the best song of the last 15 years. The track, which was released in 1997, beat competition from Arcade Fire, who came in second with Rebellion (Lies), Outkast who were third with Hey Ya!, The Strokes who came fourth with Last Nite and The Killers, who round off the top five with Mr Brightside.

Speaking to NME about the track, Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood revealed that the song initially had featured a 10-minute organ outro. "Originally it had a ten-minute organ outro, which ultimately we ditched and replaced with the 'rain down' section. Was that the right decision? I think so, but sometimes I regret the lack of psychedelic, patchouli-soaked organ madness."

Bali shakes 44 injured, buildings damaged in 6.2 quake

A POWERFUL earthquake jolted the Indonesian resort island of Bali yesterday, injuring dozens of people and triggering panic as tourists fled violently shaking buildings. The 6.2-magnitude quake rocked the main tourist district of Kuta for several minutes, damaging ancient Hindu temples and sending concrete debris crashing down onto cars and pavements as walls and roofs collapsed. Kuta's main thoroughfare of Sunset Road, lined with restaurants, malls and supermarkets, was hard hit with cracks forming on the facade of several buildings. "Hundreds of people ran

onto the streets. It was chaos. So many people tried to drive off that the traffic came to a standstill," said Reno Permana, who raced from his third-floor office when the quake struck. "Part of the wall on the Carrefour supermarket near my building came down, and tiles from the roof fell and smashed into the parking lot. A lot of the buildings are badly damaged, with windows smashed in." Many of the 44 injured were children from three damaged schools. At one hospital, more than a dozen students — their uniforms torn and blood-stained — were crying and clutching

their bleeding heads. "We panicked and ran out of our classroom, but something fell on us when we were running outside," said high school student Valentina. The quake, which was also felt in the neighbouring islands Lombok and Java, was followed by a 4.6-magnitude aftershock, Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. Part of the roof of the Puja Mandala temple near the coastal resort of Nusa Dua was damaged and fell onto the street, and another temple was damaged in a small landslide near Bali's capital of Denpasar. — AFP

Tough is now slightly prettier Even strong men need a midlife facelift TestDrive: Toyota Hilux If someone had to describe the Toyota Hilux in one word, all they would have to say is “Tough” and everyone would just nod in agreement. The toughness of the Hilux made the leap from the realm of advertising copy legend into the real world through the famous test conducted By Shamsul Yunos by British car series, lifestyle@mmail.com.my Top Gear. Dropped, crashed, sunk and abused in ways that would make most of us cringe, the car continued to restart with a minimum of effort from the mechanic, and it is now a permanent fixture on the Top Gear set. It is also the reason why the Hilux is the most popular vehicle in conflict areas, mounted with machine guns, carrying emergency supplies, transporting troop and doing virtually everything that a truck is expected to do and more. Toyota sells the Hilux on tough alone and it keeps re-selling itself on the same virtue in the used market, holding on to value like the precious metal that it is. But even Clint Eastwood, the quintessential tough guy needs a bit of make-up for the screen so it wouldn’t hurt the Hilux to have a mid-life freshener, especially since new competition is on the way. Changes to the Hilux includes an extensively restyled front, with more angular styling and more chrome in the detailing. The revised bonnet air scoop now looks more aggressive and more in keeping with the angular lines of the bonnet, grille and headlamp design.

Wing mirrors now get turn indicators and can be electrically folded if you opt for the 3.0G. Subtle change includes chunkier wheel-arch

extenders and new alloy wheels. The rear combination lamp is also new but you would probably miss it. The face of the Hilux is now in line with all Toyota pick-up trucks, including US only models and the mild changes has had a significant effect on the overall image of the vehicle. The cabin also gets a nice redesign, especially the dashboard centre console which now looks neater, cleaner and more modern. It also protrudes a bit more, creating a 3-D effect that is popular in car interior design. Thankfully Toyota has kept the materials in the Hilux and this allows the facelifted model to look and feel as tough as before. They have also made the cabin feel more airy with revised upholstery and overall cabin colour. Cabin styling may not be on top of the priority list for buyers in this category but it certainly would make the Hilux more desirable if the cabin looked more inviting. While the upper part of the cabin feels more airy, the lower portion gets darker coloured plastic, making it easier to maintain as dark colours hide dirt and grime better. It also gets a new steering wheel design that apes the helm you can find in the Camry 2.5G and 3.0G with the more luxurious variant getting steering-mounted stereo controls. The 3.0G gets a 2-DIN head unit with USB and AUX input as standard where it was optional in the pre-facelift model. It also comes with a DVD-based satellite navigation and reverse camera. The 2.5G gets shift position indicator on the dials, which are Optitron only for the 3.0 (with added amber highlights). Mechanically, the facelifted version is identical to the variants replaced. The 3.0 is powered by the 1KD-FTV D-4D common-

rail diesel that is force-fed variable-nozzle turbocharger to generate 163 PS and 343 Nm of torque from 1,400 to 3,200 rpm. The 2.5-litre variants are held on to the same diesel engine cranking out 102 PS and 260 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm. Both are matched to a four-speed ECT automatic. 2.5G buyers can opt for a five-speed manual, which is standard on the Standard and Single Cab. The Hilux comes with part time 4X4 with shift from 2WD mode to 4X4 High Range selectable at speeds of up to 80 km/h. To get into low range, one must be below 8 km/h.

Cousins about town Chevrolet Colorado and Isuzu D-Max take off in Bangkok

By SHAMSUL YUNOS lifestyle@mmail.com.my GENERAL MOTORS and Isuzu used to work together in the light pick-up truck segment, in fact they were two peas in a pod with different badges and facial treatment. Although Isuzu has parted ways with GM, the current Chevrolet Colorado and Isuzu D-Max are basically close cousins with shared platform, basic styling and interior design. This platform was developed over five years, at a cost of US$2 billion (RM6.2 billion) with input from five continents and 60 markets around the world, making this one serious project where two pick-up trucks could be among the best in the market when they come out. For General Motors, this is a very important product for the Chevrolet brand’s global revival and it is also a very important model for Isuzu as it focuses only on light and heavy commercial vehicles. With so much riding on this pair, let us look at what they have packed into them. Chevrolet is offering the Thai market no less than 26 combinations of Colorado models, powertrains, cabins, and ride heights and they include single-, extended- and crew-cab bodies in high- and low-stance configurations, wide- and narrow-body options, as well as two- and four-wheel-drive configurations. The Colorado will be offered with a choice of two new Duramax turbo-diesel engines in three specification levels. The base is GM's global bodyon-frame, rear-drive midsize truck architecture, and it has been engineered to meet the highest-possible safety standards wherever it is sold and

The Vespa Jamboree 2011 is thus the perfect opportunity for those unfamiliar with the brand to come closer and feel the excitement and camaraderie of the Vespa family. The event is set to be the largest gathering of Vespa owners Malaysia has seen and will be held in front of the stadium at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa from Oct 21 to 23. The 1 Malaysia Vespa Jamboree 2011 is organised by the Malaysian Vespa Association and sponsored by Naza Premira, a subsidiary of the Naza Group of Companies and the sole importer and distributor of Vespa scooters in Malaysia. “We estimate that close to 1,000 Vespa owners will take

part in this event. This is the opportunity for all Vespa owners to gather and share experiences of being a ‘Vesparian’,” said Wan Hussain Wan Abdul Jalil, President of Malaysian Vespa Association.

Chevrolet Colorado can be specified with features such as electronic stability control, anti-lock braking system featuring electronic brake force distribution, traction control, hydraulic brake assist, cornering brake control and driver and occupant front air bags. The development of the allnew Colorado was led by a highly skilled team of GM engineers in Brazil who used their expertise to tailor the vehicle for a number of global markets, including those in Southeast Asia. Team members lived in Thailand during the Colorado's development, immersing themselves in the highly competitive truck market and observing how Thais use their vehicles and the driving conditions they experience. The two Duramax diesels, built at GM Thailand's newly opened US$200 million (RM628 million) engine plant, are available in 2.8-liter and 2.5-litre dis-

placements. The 2.8-litre turbo-diesel features a variable-geometry turbocharger for optimal power and efficiency across the rpm band and a balance shaft for greater smoothness, while both engines feature components designed to last for 240,000Km. The 2.8-litre engine is rated at 180 horsepower (132 kW) and 346 lb.-ft. of torque (470 Nm) with an available six-speed automatic transmission (324 lb.ft. / 440 Nm with a five-speed manual). The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 150 horsepower (110 kW) and 258 lb.-ft. of torque (350 Nm). The Colorado was styled by the GM South America Design Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and takes many cues from the three Colorado concept vehicles revealed at global auto shows in Thailand, Argentina, Australia and Germany throughout the year. Design highlights include a power dome in the hood which, combined with a raised cowl, is intended to give the Colorado a strong, purposeful appearance. Highermounted dual projector headlamps are positioned beneath the power dome, intended to emphasise visual strength in the face of the vehicle. That goal of premium appearance is also reflected by detailed sheet met-

al work throughout the exterior, including the hood and door panels, which blend layers of natural light for an uncluttered, natural surface appearance. With a flowing instrument panel, integrated centre stack and trademark Chevrolet dual cockpit design, the interior of the all-new Colorado combines car-like characteristics with the boldness expected of a pickup. Meanwhile Isuzu says that the all-new D-Max is built on what they call the i-Grip platform but it is quite clear that many of the design features such as the glasshouse and other hard points are shared with the Colorado. Isuzu says the new D-Max’s body is 42 per cent stiffer than the old one, and will help bring about improved handling and ride. In the double-cab, the larger dimensions of the vehicle bring about more legroom space for rear occupants, who also get more comfy seats at the back. During the Bangkok launch, Isuzu says the D-Max will be offered with a 2.5 litre turbodiesel with fixed or variable geometry turbo. Fixed vane output is 116 hp and 280 Nm while the variable geometry turbo version cranks out 136 hp and 320 Nm. A 3.0 litre version is available and it produces 177 hp and 380 Nm. Isuzu bolted on a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission as options. New features of the D-Max include traction control and a vehicle stability system, as well as an eight-speaker audio system with surround sound.

Suzuki attacks Myvi SE with Swift GX THE Suzuki Swift is a popular car among young buyers who want something stylish, spritely, fun to drive and, equally important, non-national. As with any other non-national car, the most limiting market barrier for the Suzuki Swift is the price. Starting in the mid RM70K and peaking at just RM100K for the Swift Sport, the fun little car simply could not reach the market that wanted it. To fix this problem, Suzuki Malaysia Automobile went back to

the drawing board and came up with a package that they could present to the public at a price that is hard to refuse and the result of their brainstorming session is the Swift GX. Priced at RM65,888 on the road with insurance, it nips at the heels of the Perodua Myvi SE Extreme which tops the chart at RM61,700. In terms of monthly payments, the Swift GX, with its Ambank-powered sliding scale payment scheme is less than RM100 more per month than the Myvi SE at RM550 per month. For that price, you still get the safety kit that includes dual SRS airbags, and ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist. It differs from the GLX, launched in July in terms of front

a opens RM200m integrated hub equipment package with as little as five days before delivery. Toyota expects this added flexibility to be translated to better customer purchase experience as it allows dealers and branches to offer better variant mix right

down to the last few days before taking actual delivery of the vehicles in their inventory. The large stockyard is able to hold as many as 9,500 cars, which represents about 22 days of stock given the centre's ca-

lity at Bukit Raja, operational next year, will provide body repair and

ng' like dead fishes at the plant In contrast, Toyota Motor Thailand’s manufacturing facility in Samrong, Gateway and Ban Pho was spared from the flooding. However, some suppliers are experiencing delays in supplying parts. UMW Toyota Motor said, at this moment there was no interruption to the supply of Toyota models retailed by the company. Delivery schedules to our customers have not been affected at present. UMW Toyota Motor is accessing the situation and will inform from time to time.

pacity for processing 420 cars a day. The RM200 million centre is part of the company's RM1 billion planned expenditure in the next three years. Toyota is not alone in adopting this central quality and logistics approach, Proton launched a similar facility in Sijangkang, near Port Klang some months ago. Unlike Toyota's facility which is owned and operated by UMW Toyota, Proton's facility was built and operated by logistics specialist KLAS. Apart from the vehicle prepa-

bumper, grille, rear lamp cluster, side skirts and rear spoiler. You will also miss out on the electrically folding side mirrors with side repeaters and rear head restraint, which is a costoption on the GX. Also absent at roll call are the digital information panel on the instrument cluster, keyless go, six-speaker sound system. The GX comes with a single DIN head unit with USB input that is plumbed into a basic two-speaker system. On the plus side, the

GX gets the same 15-inch alloy wheels and reverses sensors. The immobiliser is also joining the GX’s spec sheet together with the five colours available to the GLX — Bayside Blue, Serene Silver, Supreme Red, Superior White and Tranquility Black.

SUDOKU ration centre, Toyota's IQH also includes a large-scale paint and body repair shop that has 57 repair bays. This centralised body and repair shop is expected to ensure that cars repaired after accident damage can conform to the highest standard set by the manufacturer. The IQH also has a 2.1km test track with 1km long straight that will allow cars to be tested up to 140km.h. The hub will test one car out of every batch that is delivered to ensure that they have been manufactured according to Toyota standard.

Last leg of Naza Kia test drive roadshow NAZA Kia Malaysia, the official distributor of Kia Motors vehicles in Malaysia, is hosting the final leg of its hugely popular Test Drive Kia On Tour 2011 roadshow in Petaling Jaya, Selangor this week. The five-day roadshow started on Wednesday and will end on Sunday at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara. The roadshow at the Curve will be the final leg of Naza Kia Malaysia’s Test Drive Kia On Tour 2011 which began in May at the One Utama Shopping Centre, Kuala

Lumpur before moving to Penang in August and Johor Bahru in September. Customers who test drive any of the vehicles at any of these roadshows will be in the running to win a Forte 1.6EX. At The Curve roadshow, customers will be given a chance to test drive the multiple-award winning and all-new Sportage as well as the highly-popular Forte and Sorento SUV. The all-new Sportage was recently launched by Naza Kia Malaysia in June. The lucky winner of the Forte 1.6EX will be announced following the completion of the Test Drive Kia On Tour 2011 roadshow at The Curve. The Test Drive Kia On Tour 2011 leg at The Curve will also include mystery gifts for customers who

take part in the test drive or sign up to be a Kia Malaysia fan on Facebook at the venue. For more information on the Test Drive Kia On Tour 2011, please call 1-800-888-542. The Test Drive Kia On Tour 2011 is a new initiative by Naza Kia Malaysia to bring its award-winning products to its customers in major markets in the country. During the recent roadshow at Johor Bahru, a 13-car Kia motorcade travelled from Kuala Lumpur to kick off the southern leg of the tour. The motorcade, which was flagged off at Menara Naza, Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, included stops at Seremban and Melaka. At Seremban, the motorcade had brief stops at Tesco Seremban and Dataran Seremban while in Melaka, it stopped at the Melaka Mall, Dataran Pahlawan, Aeon Bandaraya and Mydin Melaka.

Naza will have a booth displaying the scooters and lifestyle merchandise related to the brand and the merchandise will be sold at a discount to allow as many people as possible to share the Vespa excitement. “In addition to the 1Malaysia Vespa Jamboree, a special convoy around town has been organised for Vesparians on the evening of Oct 22. NAZA is in fact also organising a funfilled carnival, the Bikepalooza 2011, this weekend. KUALA LUMPUR: GOLF/ SIME DARBY LPGA MALAYSIA 2011

Four on top

Lang, Hjorth, Na and Schreefel tied with five-under B R I T TA N Y L A N G , Ma r i a Hjorth, Na Yeon Choi and Dewi Claire Schreefel stormed into first place after Round One of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, finishing the day on five-under with a score of 66 at The Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club yesterday. First to top the leaderboard after 18 holes was 21-year-old Lang from the United States, who carded a fantastic round that included six birdies on the 3rd, 5th, 8th, 12th, 16th and 17th. Three of Lang's five top 10 finishes this year have come in the last two and a half months of the season. Lang started this strong stretch by finishing second at the Women's British Open, tying her career-best finish and earning her enough points to secure a spot on the 2011 US Solheim Cup team. "I played really well and got off to a good start. I birdied hole three to get one-under from there and just kind of sailed in. I've

been hitting the ball great for three, four, five months now. It just felt effortless today. I've had more energy, I've had more fun, and I'm playing better," said Lang, who will tee off today at 10.45am with Schreefel and Hjorth. Shortly following suit was former Futures Tour player and newcomer to the LPGA Tour, Schreefel, who similarly scored birdies on six holes of the course, her final hole being well received by the crowd. The 26-year-old Dutch golfer played beautifully, looking comfortable on the tournament's East Course to capture the joint lead. Clearly delighted by her first day's performance, Schreefel said: "I started on the back line and got off to a solid start with three birdies on that nine. I hit the ball pretty pure today and made a lot of good putts. The conditions were really good. The green rolls really true. The

key is to just pick your spots on the fairways. All I can do is play my game and see what tomorrow brings." Meanwhile, Aretha Pan (pic) was the best placed Malaysian player at No 55 on the scoreboard with a four-over 75 score. The qualifier began well with birdies in the first and sixth holes, but four bogeys and a double-bogey in the last hole saw her finish with a 75. "Today I got lucky. I hit a few bad shots, but still went to the hole, and I made a couple of birdies. "The last hole was just too hard, I made the wrong position and landed (the ball) in the pond," she said. Other national golfers, Jean Chua and Ainil Johari, both shot 76 today while Kelly Tan came home with a 77. — Agencies

Fired-up Akmal ready for return-leg By HARESH DEOL haresh@mmail.com.my

PERAK hitman Akmal Rizal Rakhli was stunned when he was asked to play against Selangor in the first-leg of the Malaysia Cup quarterfinals on Monday. He was not mentally prepared for the match but was brought in to substitute Shafiq Jamal as the Seladang lost 3-1. Akmal and four others — Shahrulnizam Mustafa, Nasril Nurdin, Syazwan Roslan and Azmeer Yusoff — were slapped with a seven-match suspension after they had allegedly threw profanities at referee Sabri Mat Lazim in a Super League match

in May. All four were also fined RM4,000 each. Nevertheless, the FA of Malaysia appeals committee lifted the suspension just hours before the kick-off on Monday. As the drama subsides, Akmal is now geared up for Perak's returnleg clash against the Red Giants at Perak Stadium in Ipoh tonight. "I wasn't ready for the first-leg match. I was only told about it at 2pm and we played Selangor later in the day. Our coach (Norizan Bakar) requested that I followed the team and I later came on. I'm happy we managed to get a goal (through Failee Ghazali)," he said. Akmal, who once donned the

Merah Kuning jersey, strongly believes Perak have the capabilities to win the match en route to earning a spot in the semifinals. "We've done it before. Remember, we did beat Selangor 4-1 in the Super League in Ipoh. I suppose I'll be given a chance to play in the return-leg and we'll ensure Perak qualify for the semifinals." But Akmal was quick to point out some of his teammates suffered jitters at Shah Alam Stadium. Perak played well for the first 10 minutes of the match but allowed Selangor to manipulate and take control of the game. "Some of the players have never played at this stage of the tournament. They were nervous and it

was obvious. Some of them failed to absorb the pressure and caved in when it mattered the most. "That will not happen in Ipoh. We have the crowd on our side and we usually perform better at home. We have what it takes to make it through the next round."

Coach wants Sapura to fight for skipper

By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

SAPURA coach I. Vikneswaran wants his team to fight for captain S. Kuhan in the TNB Cup quarterfinal second-leg tie against Nur Insafi Penang tomorrow. The skipper was given his marching orders for using foul language towards the umpire in the 2-1 first-leg loss. "He fought for the team and it's time for the team to fight for him. He has served the club for years too," said Vikneswaran.

"We cannot blame Kuhan's absence if we fail to overcome the deficit."

Vikneswaran is yet to decide on the stand-in skipper but admits he is torn between going with experience and the next generation of leaders. "We have yet to decide. If we go with experience then it could be Jiwa Mohan or Mohd Rodhanizam Mat Radzi. The younger ones in contention are Azreen Rizal Nasir, Manraj Singh and Muhammad Izzat Mohd Rahim," he added. The first-leg result came as a surprise to everyone as Sapura handed Nur Insafi Penang a 7-1 hiding in their Malaysian

Hockey League (MHL) encounter a couple of weeks ago. However, Vikneswaran believes Nur Insafi deserved their win and Sapura were lucky not to lose by a bigger margin. "This is a sport. Just like every other sport anything can happen. "We have to be professional above it and treat the return-leg seriously. We cannot rest on our laurels." Should Sapura overcome the deficit, they are like to set up a clash with Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

Dancing king Ioane Wallaby to show his moves if they beat All Blacks AUSTRALIA wing Digby Ioane will ''dance all night'' should the Wallabies overcome New Zealand in their semifinal at Eden Park in Auckland on Sunday. Ioane, who plays his club rugby with Reds, made a name for himself in Super Rugby with his dancing moves after scoring but insists he will hold out in Auckland. "I will dance if we win, after the game, I'll dance the whole night," he said. Such is the magnitude of the clash. Ioane believes despite all the pressure that comes with a semifinal, it will be a special day. "This is a game to remember, win or lose, and you just want to do well for your country. So the pressure is on," he told Planet Rugby. Replacement hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau admitted their progression past South Africa and into this stage of the tournament did not mean the Australians were the finished article. "From our perspective, in order for us to get the job done, we just have to worry about what we have to focus on," he said. "There's definitely some improvements (needed) from the game against South Africa, although we defended quite well. New Zealand are a different challenge so we just need to

prepare accordingly." Meanwhile, scrumhalf Luke Burgess hailed the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand, sighting it as something of a sibling duel over the years. "We respect New Zealand immensely, they're a wonderful team and they always have been. Because of the close proximity of the countries, we're brothers in a way and there's always strong family rivalry," he said. "It's a wonderful rivalry we have. It gets the best out of both nations. It's very intense, it's certainly intense from our perspective and hopefully, from theirs as well." The Australians have taken every chance this week to ensure the All Blacks are feeling maximum pressure ahead of their clash. Flanker Rocky Elsom jumped at the opportunity to outline exactly what a demanding Kiwi public expected of their team, just in case any All Blacks happened to be listening. "They’re the No 1 ranked team in the world and they’re in a country where they

expect them to win the World Cup. Regardless of what happens, the public expect that," he said. "I can’t speak for them, but I know you get a feeling around town that they won’t tolerate anything less." Elsom laughed off the supposed curse of Eden Park, where Australia have not won since 1986, saying New Zealand had more to fear from the ground than they did.

"They are expected to win this match and the next one as well. "There is a hell of a lot of expectation. Just what that does to them, I’m not sure, but you definitely know it’s there." Flyhalf Quade Cooper was next to pitch into the pressure theme. "They’re supposed to have won the World Cup for the past three tournaments and this is no different," he said.

French try specialist Clerc's business not finished yet WITH already six tries so far in the tournament, wing Vincent Clerc has become the top French try scorer still playing the game and their all-time Rugby World Cup leader. Despite his elevation to the company of some of the most revered names in Les Bleus' history, the dashing Clerc is not letting his success go to his head. For him, with France preparing for a mouth-watering semifinal against Wales at Eden Park tomorrow, the team always comes first. On whether his prolific scoring as part of a squad not exactly known for their

The Malay Mail Friday 14 OCTOBER, 2011

consistency gave him confidence, Clerc was adamant: "What gives confidence is the group's performance. Scoring a try remains nice but nothing more. "Above all, it validates all the work laid out by the others. To aim at a personal goal would be missing the point." The 30-year-old Clerc's six tries not only puts him alongside England's Chris Ashton as joint top try scorer in the ongoing tournament, they raise him to joint third — behind New Zealand's Jonah Lomu and Doug Howlett — on the all-time Rugby World Cup list with 11. Despite his innate modesty,

Clerc, who has played 55 Tests for France, could not help smiling when he spoke of who broke the news to him that his 31st try in the quarterfinal against England put him alongside the legendary Philippe Sella in third place on Les Bleus' all-time try-scoring list. "It's Sella who told me," he said, before pointing out that "the leader, Serge Blanco, with his 38 tries, is way in front''. Second in the ranking, with 32 tries, is Philippe SaintAndre, who will be the next France head coach. In the event he does not score again in the tournament, does Clerc harbour

any suspicions Saint-Andre might not select him so he can keep his number two spot in France's try-scoring record book? "Who knows?", Clerc said. "Or maybe he will select me only if I promise not to score anymore." His primary Welsh oppon e nt t o m o r r ow, S h a n e Williams, certainly does not expect Clerc to be doing anything but going full tilt for the tryline. Williams, a man who knows all about being on the wing and scoring tries, said: "He’s the sort of player I enjoy watching but not playing against too much."

WE head into the Korean Grand Prix in Yeongam this weekend, with freshly crowned driver's world champion Sebastian Vettel (pic). His consistent performances this year made his crowning inevitable. In Japan last week, the whole paddock was praising the young German on his great season. Red Bull will now be aiming to wrap up the constructor’s title this weekend, and should do it comfortably, barring any strange incidents which may result in both cars not finishing. So the focus is on who will finish second in the driver’s championship with over 100 points still to play for this season. Red Bull's Mark Webber, McLaren's Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso of Ferrari will all fancy their chances. The Korean Grand Prix could throw up a surprise or two. It had unusually high tyre wear last year, which Bridgestone put down to the newness of the track and dirt on it. It did not become an issue in the race, because of the rain that came down, which meant the teams

had to run on rain tyres for most of the race. But it could be an issue this time around. Also, Pirelli had bought soft and super soft tyres and we could see a thrilling race as these tyres wear off very quickly. This will play into the hands of Button and Alonso, who incidentally also finished first and second in the last race when tyre wear was again high. McLaren seemed to have found more speed in Japan and it should translate to genuine pace in Korea. Button is also driving well and I expect him to bring that same confidence this weekend. However, Hamilton is under a lot of pressure to perform and not make any mistakes. Korea also has the longest straight in Formula 1. How teams manage the Drag Reduction System to overtake while not compromising lap time will also be key along with their tyre management for the weekend. Loving Scarlett

... now Betis boss Mel may pay for mocking good-looking Ronaldo

NO COMPARISON: Johansson as 'Black Widow' in Iron Man 2 is clearly better looking than Ronaldo (inset)

moose@mmail.com.my

HOLA! Real Betis manager Pepe Mel may well be asking for trouble. What was he thinking when he mocked Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo by saying the Portuguese is not the best-looking person around? Ronaldo earlier stunned everyone when he said last month the whistles he received from fans were driven by jealousy because of his good looks, football talent and big paycheque. Mel played down the Por tugal inter national's remarks, saying the 26-yearold does not top his list of beautiful people. "The thing about him being good looking is debatable," Mel told told Antena 3. "I like Scarlett Johansson more than Cristiano Ronaldo. About him being rich, that is something obvious, we are talking about figures and no one can argue with that." The 26-year-old Johansson, of course, is an American actress and singer who acted in movies like The Horse Whisperer, Ghost World and Iron Man 2. Real entertain Betis at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday (12am) and this is where the

fun is going to start. Ronaldo, if fielded by manager Jose Mourinho after playing for Portugal in the Euro 2012 qualifiers, must be extra motivated to bash Betis after what Mel had said about him. Mel, at the end of the match, may regret he had opened his mouth. Betis will find it difficult to return with any points from this match. Real can't afford to drop points here to keep in touch with champions and leaders Barcelona. Wonder what Ronaldo would said to Mel after the match. The Catalans will host lowly Racing Santander at Nou Camp on Sunday (2am) and are poised to collect three points. Never mind the fact that Barca normally find it difficult to produce their form after an international break. Oh yes! Get this. Apparently Lionel Messi and Bojan Krkic are distant cousins! This was revealed by an investigation by Diari Segre — a Catalan web portal. It became known last week Messi has Catalan roots and it now turns out that his greatgrandfather was the brother of Bojan's great-grandfather.

The families of both players share the surname Perez, stemming from ancestors who moved from Teruel to Poal in the 18th century. Ramon Perez Llobera, Messi's great-grandfather, was born in 1859 and his brother Goncal, Bojan's greatgrandfather, was born in El Poal nine years later. Ramon's granddaughter Rosa Maria Perez Mateu eventually emigrated to Argentina, where she married Eusebio Messi Baro. Their son is Messi's father. Really complicated this.

Messi and Bojan played together at Barca until the latter's move to Roma in the summer transfer window. The match of this weekend, anyway, must be the one where second-placed Levante entertain fourthplaced Malaga on Monday (12am). Levante have been enjoying a great start to the season where they even beat Real last month. This is also the case of big spenders Malaga with former Real and Villarreal manager Chilean Manuel Pellegrini at at the helm.

Malaga have quality all over the pitch to mount a challenge at least for a place in the Champions League next season. In defence, they have players like Argentina international Martin Demichelis. In midfield, the stars are France international Jeremy Touladan, Spain international Santi Cazorla and Brazilian Julio Baptista. Up front, there are Colombia international Salomon Rondon and veteran Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy. A draw likely. Adios!

Eto'o linked with loan to Inter CAMEROON captain Samuel Eto'o (pic) has been linked with a move back to Inter Milan, just two months after he left the club in a big-money move to Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala. La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Eto'o has approached Inter about a possible loan move back to the Nerazzurri during the Russian winter break, which lasts from November to March. Eto'o was back in Milan for a visit during the international break and went shopping in Milan's chic commercial area with his wife.

The newspaper claims he could sign a loan deal similar to the one that brought David Beckham to AC Milan during the Major League Soccer offseason in the United States.

GameOn with Andrew Leci THE Manchester Ship Canal was completed in 1894. This may seem like a strange way to start an article about an upcoming football match, but the historical fact goes a long way towards understanding what has become one of the most compelling, enduring and bitter rivalries in English football. T h rou g h out t h e 1 9 t h Century, Manchester had become renowned for its manufacturing prowess, while Liverpool was a major port, with an estimated 40 per cent of the world's trade passing through it. After the completion of the Manchester Ship Canal, however, ships could bypass Liverpool and go directly into Manchester, resulting in reduced revenues for Liverpool merchants, the loss of jobs at the port, and a great deal of resentment. The city rivalry has continued to this day, and is rarely more manifested than in clashes between the two football teams, who just happen to be the most successful in English football history. Tomorrow sees the renewal of hostilities between Liverpool and Manchester United, and the backdrop could hardly be more compelling. United's Premier League title last season, took their overall total to 19, one more

than Liverpool, with Sir Alex Ferguson finally knocking the Anfield side off the "perch" he so colourfully referred to back in 2002. Before Ferguson won his first league title with United in 1993, Liverpool had completed the last of their 18 (in 1990). It's not surprising then that Ferguson described overhauling Liverpool's total as the "greatest challenge" in his managerial career. When Ferguson took the reins at United, they had won only seven titles. While the 1980s belonged to Liverpool, the 90s and 2000s very much belonged to United, as they picked up the 12 Premier League titles required to supersede Liverpool's achievements. The perch now belongs to United, and Ferguson is enjoying every minute of it. To give you an idea of the intensity between the rivals, Steven Gerrard, apparently, despite keeping innumerable swapped shirts in his memorabilia cabinet, refuses to have a United jersey in his home. Gary Neville described scoring the winning goal at Anfield and celebrating under the Kop as a "lifelong dream", after John O'Shea had done just that in 2007, and it's interesting to note that while a handful of players have represented both clubs, no one player has been transferred

DALGLISH

directly between the two since 1964. What will also be fascinating about tomorrow's clash is the renewal of managerial rivalries, as Ferguson and Kenny Dalglish prepare to lock horns once again. Theirs is, according to Ian Herbert writing in The Independent, "a rivalry of respect, fury and friendship", and despite its intermittent nature, remains one of the most abiding in English football ironic — as both men hail from Glasgow. It dates back to 1969, and an Old Firm (Celtic versus Rangers) reserve match. An 18-year-old Dalglish, at the start of his career, was deployed at centreback to mark a 28-year-old Ferguson, then at the twilight of his career. Dalglish claims that he had the striker "in his pocket" for the entire game, helping his side to a 2-0 win, while Ferguson claims that he remembers scoring in the match. Ferguson's verdict on Dalglish after the match: "That wee fat boy won't make a player." If Ferguson has

FERGUSON

been right about most of the assessments he has made in his managerial career, I think we can all safely say that he got that one wrong. While the relationship between the two has often resembled a feud, there is no questioning the respect they hold for each other, and the delight they both take when pitting wits. Ferguson is resident on the perch at this moment in time, a fact that will certainly not be lost on Dalglish. The Liverpool faithful will need no reminding of the fact that their last league title was claimed back in 1990, and tomorrow's game could well be an opportunity to lay down a marker in the latest instalment of the great North-West rivalry.  Catch the Liverpool vs Manchester United viewing event at ESPN Grandstand tomorrow, and be part of the fun and festivities at Red Carpet Avenue, Encorp Strand (Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya), starting at 6.00pm before the 7.45pm kick-off.

Rooney sick of losing at Anfield

WAYNE ROONEY says his connections with Everton add even more significance to his visits to Liverpool ahead of their clash tomorrow. He came through the youth ranks and started his professional career with Liverpool's fierce local rivals the Toffees before making the move to United in 2004. Rooney says that factor, coupled with United's own intense rivalry with Liverpool, makes trips to Anfield particularly momentous for him. "With my Everton connections and the fact all my family are big Everton fans, it makes

games against Liverpool a bit more special," he told the Daily Express. "Of course, it's a big day for United with their rivalry with Liverpool but, for me, it is a massive game. To beat Liverpool is always a great feeling and a great day when you do that." United suffered defeat on their last three visits to Anfield, and while Rooney is expecting another testing encounter tomorrow, he hopes to stop that winless streak. "Liverpool is always, for me, the toughest place to go and win a game. They'll be pushing

Every day Krasic is rumoured to be departing Juventus but, currently, there are no signs of this happening."

Matri is still wanted at Cagliari

CAGLIARI president Massimo Cellino has made it clear that he would happily sign Alessandro Matri (pic) back from Juventus if they decide to sell the striker. The 27-yearold initially joined his current club on a six-month loan deal in January and impressed enough to make his stay permanent for a transfer fee of €15.5 million. However, Matri faces stiff competition for a starting berth and is not assured of regular first team action under new head coach Antonio Conte. "I'm ready to take him back at the end of the season if Juventus are willing to sell and offer me a little discount," Cellino was quoted as saying.

to get into the top four. And with the signings they have, they're capable of doing that so we'll have to be aware of them and try to beat them this time," he said. While United's recent results at Anfield have been disappointing, Rooney recalls his first trip to the ground with Alex Ferguson's men back in 2005, when he scored the winning goal in the visitors' 1-0 victory. "I was a mascot for Everton in a derby at Anfield once. But my best memory of going there was my first game for United at Anfield. We won 1-0 and I

scored the winner at the Kop, so that was a great day." United follow up their trip to Liverpool with another blockbuster clash at home to neighbours and bitter rivals Manchester City the following weekend. Rooney is predicting a close derby encounter but is certain his side can snatch a win against City. "It's going to be a massive game for both clubs and the city as a whole. It will be a close and difficult game. But with us being at home, we're confident we can get the three points," he said.

Three-way tussle for tricky Torje ARSENAL have joined Inter and AC Milan in the hunt for Udinese winger Gabriel Torje, according to reports in Italy. The 21-year-old has been dubbed "the Romanian Lionel Messi" due to his pint-sized frame and dribbling speed, and it seems the Gunners have wasted no time in scouting him. Torje was a £9 million signing from Dinamo Bucharest in the summer, and was brought in to fill the shoes of star player Alexis Sanchez, who left for Barcelona. Both Milan giants have been alerted to the Romanian's ability, and the Gunners are also believed to be closely monitoring his progress.

SERDANG: BOWLING

Sudden death National youth bowler dies of cardiac arrest

NATIONAL kegler Khoo Beng Khai was talking about his bowling prowess moments before his shocking death. The 20-year-old, who was with fellow youth squad members Aris Ardila and Jonathan Chan, had just driven into the National Sport Council (NSC) to look for parking when he had a cardiac arrest. “We were looking for a car park and suddenly Beng Khai goes into a spasm and slams the accelerator. If he hadn’t moved the gear into neutral just seconds before we would have slammed into the wall,” said Aris. Aris had to pull his leg off the accelerator while Jonathan pulled the handbrake. The duo then called for an ambulance and also alerted the medical team on duty. While waiting for assistance, Aris and Jonathan tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but he did not respond. “The medical staff then administered CPR as well and

used some equipment. “I still can’t believe it. We were talking about bowling and Beng Khai was saying he was happy to be performing well,” said Aris. Aris has fond memories of Beng Khai. Among them were winning the team event gold medal at the Kuwait Asian Youth Bowling Championship last year and then teaming up in the doubles to bring home the bronze medal. “Only recently, he (Beng Khai) was saying about defending the Asian Youth Bowling Championship gold medal next year. He also wanted to win the youth title at the KL Open next week,” added Aris. Beng Khai was tipped to give the elite bowlers a run for their money after a recent good showing. He won the Milo Junior All Stars last December and the youth title at the Malaysia Open in May. He was also a finalist at the Na-

Beng Khai’s remains were brought back to his hometown in Penang yesterday and will be cremated tomorrow at Mount Erskine at 2pm.

‘NSI capable of emergencies’ NATIONAL Sports Institute (NSI) director general Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz (pic) confirmed that they can react immediately to any medical emergencies at any one time. Questions arose as to NSI’s capabilities to handle emergencies late at night after Khoo Beng Khai suffered a cardiac arrest and an ambulance from Serdang Hospital was the first to the scene. “We have medical officers on duty at all times. Even our ambulance can be mobilised any time,” said Ramlan. “However, when Dr Jazmiza arrived at the scene the ambulance was already there. The boys (Aris Ardila and Jonathan Chan) had called the ambulance first.”

Ramlan also revealed that Beng Khai’s last thorough medical check-up was last year and the results were good. “We did not receive any concerns regarding his health in recent times too. Beng Khai was said to be

fit and healthy and showed no symptoms of a heart problem,” he added. “Sometimes this can go undetected too. Just look at the death of footballers Marc Vivien-Foe and Antonio Puerta. On the other hand, we have the case of Yuan Yufang in 2003.” Yufang had two extra notes in her heart rhythm and underwent angiogram for an irregular heartbeat. This didn’t stop the walker from continuing to win honours for Malaysia. Puerta and Vivien-Foe both collapsed, on separate occasions, while playing football after suffering a heart attack. NSI is yet to receive an official report regarding the death and cannot comment on the cause of Beng Khai’s passing.

Rooney banned for three Euro 2012 matches

ENGLAND striker Wayne Rooney was banned for three matches by Uefa for his red card against Montenegro, a decision which will rule him out of the group stages of Euro 2012. Manchester United star Rooney was punished for his 74th minute sending-off in the 2-2 draw in Podgorica last Saturday in England’s final qualifier. “The Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body has today handed down a three-match suspension to England forward Wayne Rooney following his dismissal during the Uefa Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro last Saturday,” said a Uefa statement. West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce believes England will get through to the knockout stages despite Rooney’s ban.

“They would miss him but not to the point that it would cost them going further than the group stages,” he told the BBC. Allardyce believes Rooney must pay the price for his “silly” sending-off. “It’s disappointing but at the end of the day football players on the field cannot alway be angels,” he added. “Sometimes they can lose their cool and do things in an instinctive moment that they can’t control and they suffer the consequences after. “They always regret what they have done when it’s something as silly as what Wayne did but it happens. It’s a part of his character and a part of his make up. “It’s just a blip I would hope and the good thing is it didn’t cost England anything.” — Agencies
