Tighter control on zoological parks with new regulations By IKRAM ISMAIL ikram.ismail@mmail.com.my

Friday 15 July 2011

ALMOST 54 years after the first zoo in the country opened its doors to the public, Malaysia is finally set to have its own set of regulations on how zoological parks nationwide should be managed. The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) is in the final stages of drafting the new regulations on ‘Mengawalselia Pengendalian Zoo’ (Supervision of Zoo Operations) to be included in the new Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, which was enforced last December. The department is now finalising the necessary bylaws and the new regulations are expected to be in force as

early as next year. Department director-general Datuk Abd Rasid Samsudin told The Malay Mail they comprise, among others: • Operators would have to apply for specific permits to run zoos, unlike before • To prevent overcrowding, the overall size of the zoo will determine how many animals can be kept • Enclosure size and layouts, as well as cage sizes, will be determined by the animals’ size and habitat • Quality food and vitamins for the animals to be made compulsory • All zoos must have its own in-house veterinarians • All captive wildlife and

those meant for export will be tagged with microchips Abdul Rasid said all 44 zoos in Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan, including Zoo Negara, currently needed only to apply for temporary permits allowing them to house wild animals. “Under the provision of Section 10 of the Act, no one can operate a zoo, conduct commercial captive breeding, or have circus or wildlife exhibitions involving protected wildlife unless granted a permit by Perhilitan.” He said zoos had also been notified of the impending addition to the Wildlife Conservation Act. • Continued on pg2

Join the National Cancer Society of Malaysia's (NCSM) 'Relay For Life' run at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Stadium tomorrow — NCSM adviser Datuk Zuraidah Atan ZOO Negara will not be going private, at least, for now. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas told The Malay Mail that at present, there has been no proposal by any parties to privatise the 48-year-old national zoo. “No, there’s not been any plan to privatise the zoo lately. Zoo Negara continues to be an establishment run by a non-governmental organisation (NGO),” said Uggah, when contacted yesterday. Allegations of mismanagement of the country’s top animal sanctuary in 2009 had prompted the ministry to step in. The ministry had formed a committee, headed by Uggah, and initiated a study with regards to the management of Zoo Negara. The committee had forwarded its findings and recommendations to the Cabinet for further action last year, but it appears now that privatisation of the zoo is out of the picture. Zoo Negara is run by the Malaysian Zoological Society, and relies on gate receipts and support from donors and sponsors for funding. required to comply with stricter guidelines and standard operating procedures. The Act also requires zoos, as well as circuses and wildlife exhibition operations, to obtain a licence from the ministry first before they are

allowed to operate. This gives the ministry better control over the establishments. Prior to that, zoos only need a licence to handle endangered species. In one of the first major exercise under the Act, the

to the department after finding they did not have the capacity to meet the new regulations. The regulations, he said, were formulated following case studies at zoos in Europe and other developed countries. "We do not want local zoos to operate driven purely by profit and dismiss the welfare of its wildlife." On the tagging of wildlife, Abd Rasid said this was to curb illicit wildlife trade and smuggling. "For example, birds would have electronic bracelets placed around their legs, while other protected animals such as tigers, seladang (Malayan Gaur), orangutan, kijang (barking deer) and tapirs would have chips implanted." He said there were cases where Perhilitan were forced to rescue and relocate animals to more capable zoos after their owners neglected them, even though they were granted a special permit. As for the special task force formed by Perhilitan to check on the condition of zoos, especially on the welfare of the

animals being housed and exhibited, as front-paged by The Malay Mail yesterday, Abd Rasid said while he welcomed the participation of wildlife groups, Perhilitan would only invite NGOs in after its team had become fully operational. He said the department would only invite NGOs with financial capability and technical know-how to aid in rescue operations. Since 2003, it was reported there had been seven cases on inappropriate handling of zoos in the country, resulting in the seizure of animals from several animal parks. The most recent saw the removal of some 60 protected animals last June at the Saleng Zoo in Johor after it was found the animals were housed in deplorable conditions, contravening international and local zoo guidelines. In February last year, The Malay Mail reported Perhilitan had opened investigations into a claim that a tiger at the A' Famosa Resort in Malacca had been drugged after a video on it was posted on YouTube.

New home for tigers in Sungai Dusun By IKRAM ISMAIL ikram.ismail@mmail.com.my

THE Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has located a new site for the setting up of a conservation centre for the endangered Malayan Tiger. Perhilitan director-general Datuk Abd Rasid Samsudin told The Malay Mail they had identified a site in Sungai Dusun for these tigers (Panthera tigris jacksoni) which have been caught or rescued by authorities. He said the idea to open more conservation sites for specific endangered species came following the success of several existing animal sanc-

tuaries in the country. "With the success of the the elephant conservation centre at Lanchang in Pahang as well as of the Malay Tapir Conservation Centre within the Sungai Dusun Wildlife Reserve in Selangor, more conservation centres will be opened soon.” He said some zoos could not house tigers due to limited space. With the conservation centre, Perhilitan would be able to monitor the Malayan Tigers, which are only found in Peninsular Malaysia, in their natural habitat.

As long as there's demand, illegal meat trade will flourish, says Perhilitan head By IKRAM ISMAIL ikram.ismail@mmail.com.my

WILDLIFE authorities in the country have long been fighting to stem the tide of illegal trade of the meat of endangered species in the country. The issue was recently brought to the fore after a raid by the Department of Wildlife and National Park (Perhilitan) led to the discovery of 1.27kg of meat, supposedly that of the endangered Malayan sun bear, being served in a restaurant in Jalan Kuching. The Malay Mail spoke to Perhilitan director-general DATUK ABD RASID SAMSUDIN yesterday about what the department is doing to tackle the issue.

ABD RASID: Most tip-offs from the public

Q: Why do restaurants persist in serving dishes made from the meat of exotic and endangered species? A: It is about demand and supply. If there is no demand for such meat, it would not be sold. For example, during the raid on July 6, there were a variety of meat being served at the restaurant but people preferred to eat dishes made from the meat of the Malayan sun bear. The case is still under investigation. Q: Where do these restau-

TOP TRADES: The pangolin and clouded monitor

rant operators get their supply of such meat? A: They go through a middle-man. Orang asli, who have access to national parks and forests in the Peninsular, are being paid a small sum to hunt for the meat. It is a pity the orang asli are being used this way as many do it for the money. In the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, orang asli are allowed to hunt for endangered wildlife such as deer and ayam hutan (jungle fowl) but only enough to feed themselves. Imagine, an orang asli is paid only RM380 for each Pangolin they catch, which isn’t much. However, we are not blaming their community as they are being taken advantage of by irresponsible parties. Q: Who is tipping-off Perhilitan on such illegal trade? A: We are proud to say we receive tip-offs from the public. More people are becoming aware of such trade and when they give us accurate

information, we give them a small reward. Q: Does Perhilitan monitor restaurants in the Klang Valley suspected of selling exotic dishes? A: Yes. We have identified several hot spots in the Klang Valley, such as in Subang Jaya, where restaurants serve exotic dishes. Some restaurants have been raided many times but they still serve those dishes, so we have to constantly monitor them. Our aim is to find their main supplier.

RM100,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or both. Meanwhile, Subsection 63 stipulates any person who carries out wildlife trade or taxidermy without a licence shall be liable to a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment up to two years or both, upon conviction.

Q: How many illegal traders have been arrested and charged? A: In the last five years, we arrested and charged 170 individuals under the Wildlife Conservation Act.

Q: How many animal species are protected by Perhilitan? A: There are 2,120 protected endangered species and subspecies. We also protect several non-endangered animals, such as wildboar and monkeys, in order to preserve the natural habitat.

Q: What action has Perhilitan taken to tackle this menace? A: We constantly monitor our national forests. There are several laws enshrined in the new Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, which we enforce, such as Subsection 62, which states anyone who hunts or keeps the female of a protected species without a licence shall be liable to a fine not exceeding

Q: Which protected species or animal products are the most traded in and out of Malaysia? A: The three most traded are pangolin, wildboar and clouded monitor. Others include murai batu (white-rumped shama) and merbah telinga merah (red-whiskered bulbul) bird nests.

Rules to be relaxed Checks on used cars in revised HP Act may be reduced By MARHALIM ABAS mabas@mmail.com.my

T H E D o m e s t i c Tr a d e , Co-operatives and Consumer Affairs Ministry is willing to relax certain regulations under the newly-amended Hire Purchase Act 1967 but will not change anything pertaining to the safety and rights of consumers. Its Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, told The Malay Mail yesterday it was looking into reducing the number of checks done on secondhand cars as mandated by the amendments. "By reducing the checks, the cost of inspection will be cheaper but checks on the brakes and other safety systems will be maintained," said Ismail w it h out s p e c i f y i n g what checks will be dropped. The decision to

reduce the checks was made following a meeting between ministry officials and used car dealers associations recently. Under the amendments, effective June 15, all used vehicles for sale must undergo vehicle-inspection company Puspakom's 18-point inspection to ensure their road-worthiness. Ismail denied the enforcement of the act had hurt car sales. He said the amendment was aimed at protecting car buyers. Asked whether he had met with other stakeholders in the automotive industry, Ismail said he had received a memorandum from Proton Edar Dealers Association Malaysia (Peda). Peda and the Federation of Motor and Credit Companies

In the past, car buyers had to sign blank documents. If they refused, they would be told they would not get the cars

— Ismail Sabri Yaakob

Associations of Malaysia had called for the deferment of the amendments enforcement, claiming it would damage the industry. On whether the ministry would consider the deferment, Ismail said the amendments were not meant to harm the automotive

industry but to protect consumers. He also poured cold water on car dealers' call for the reinstatement of booking fees and deposit for vehicle sales. Under the new law, car buyers only need to pay a one per cent booking fee once a bank approves the loan and the other nine per

cent downpayment upon the signing of all documentation. Previously, buyers had to fork out 10 per cent of the total cost of the car they intended to purchase even before their loans were approved. If the loans were not approved or if the dealers absconded, the deposit would be forfeited. These old practices were now outlawed by the new amendments. Ismail pointed out that the number of complaints against car dealers were among the highest at the Consumers Tribunal. "In the past, car buyers had to sign blank documents. If they refused, they would be told they would not get the cars. But when they signed, they would end up waiting, sometimes up to six

Unhelpful cop to know his fate next week By ANDREW SAGAYAM andrew@mmail.com.my

THE police constable who rebuffed a call for help from a journalist who was pursued by an axe-wielding burglar on June 13 with his girlfriend, will know his fate next week. If found guilty of misconduct, he could face suspension. Ampang police chief, ACP Amiruddin Jamaluddin told The Malay Mail that the disciplinary team is expected to hand over their findings to Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah soon. "The inquiry and recording of the constable's statement has been completed and the disciplinary team from the Selangor police headquarters in Shah Alam will s u bm it t h e i r findings by next week," said Amiruddin. It is understood the c onst abl e, who was attached to the Pandan Perdana

police station, has been transferred to desk duties at the operations room at Ampang police headquarters. On the car used by the burglar, believed to be a Kia Forte with the number plate WUN 8304, Amiruddin said police traced the registered address of the vehicle's owner to a house in Taman Maluri, Cheras, but the house was abandoned. "We are still tracking the car owner and the burglar." On June 13, reporter Teoh El Sen, 24, his girlfriend Cherry Lui, 24, and her cousin, Ng Yung Meeng, 15, walked into a burglar ransacking Ng's home in Pandan Perdana. The burglar chased Teoh and Lui with an axe, then pursued the couple in his Kia Forte. When Teoh phoned the Pandan Perdana police station for help, the constable told Teoh to call another number and slammed down the phone. When Teoh confronted the cop later about his refusal to help, the policeman allegedly threw a tantrum.

ALL-SEEING: One of the CCTVs set up in Klang (left) and an officer manning the monitors

More ‘eyes’ to watch over streets IN a nationwide effort to combat street crime, another 496 closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) have been handed to the police and municipal councils following an earlier batch of 496 given out last year. Under the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in January last year, these wireless CCTVs will be installed in crime hotspots within the next three to four months to ensure that 90 per cent of the country will be crime-free by 2013. Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said yesterday the cameras, which cost RM11.8 million, were

part of the government’s initiative to fight crime through 24-hour monitoring of the hotspots. "The CCTV never sleeps. It only needs maintenance. It is fitted with optical zoom ability and can blow an image 25 times from its original size and is able to record footage for 45 days straight. Loudspeakers are also fitted to the CCTV poles so that public announcements can be made by police or the local authorities. "With such technology, crime prevention and law enforcement will be much easier, and along with crime prevention patrols, both police and local authorities will be able to reduce street crimes."

Chor said the first batch of 496 CCTVs were installed by 25 local authorities with links to 28 police district headquarters up to April this year. "We urge police and local authorities to complement the operation of the CCTV system and ensure they have enough manpower to monitor the control centres in their respective organisations," he said, adding that the government has successfully reduced the crime rate by 35 per cent compared with the initial 20 per cent target. "The next phase will involve extending the CCTVs to more local authorities around the country, including Sabah and Sarawak, from later this year to November next year."

Surgeries help little Kim Kim to learn her ABCs By EE ANN NEE ean@mmail.com.my

LITTLE Hew Chong Kim has just been enrolled in kindergarten this month after successfully undergoing three surgeries in April, thanks to contributions from the public. The six-year-old, affectionately called Kim Kim, is being taken care of by the Home for Special People Cheras. She was diagnosed with Apert Syndrome, a congenital disorder characterised by malformations of the skull, face, hands and feet. She also suffered from cleft palate and acrosyndactyly (fused limb appendages from base to tip) of both hands and feet. The home secretary Ten Yen Han told The Malay Mail

that Kim Kim’s surgeries cost RM70,000, and the sum was raised from public donations, including readers of The Malay Mail.

WITH Ramadan expected to start on Aug 1, textile traders and shopkeepers along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Masjid India and the Masjid Jamek bazaar here are ready for an increased number of customers during the fasting month. AK Textile Centre managing director Mohad Samybutt said his shop will have special offers during Ramadan. "I've been selling textiles here for six years and I expect sales during this year's Ramadan to be as good as the years before," said Germanborn Mohad, 50, whose wife

is Malaysian. "Most of my textile material are locally-made and the most popular is always the baju kurung." Wan Nazrina Zainal Abidin, who ventured into the textile business six months ago, said she expects good business during Ramadan. "As I am new here, I am gradually building up my clientele and I believe customers find my prices reasonable," said Wan Nazrina, 39, formerly a government school teacher. "I offer custom-made baju kurung at RM299 whereas

some shops charge up to RM800. Those who want ready-made ones will find a good selection of various types of materials." She said her materials are locally-produced and like most traders here, business is at its peak during weekends when more people have time to shop. Harni Anita, who s el ls s car fs, b aju kurung and veils of all kinds, said she has stockpiled for the coming festive season.

'Dry' market

Setapak stall owners hit by frequent water disruptions FOR more than six months, market traders in Jalan Genting Klang, Setapak, have been going through a difficult period because of constant water disruptions to their stalls. They claim their appeals to City Hall for assistance have fallen on deaf ears. Yee Seng Hock, 64, who has been operating a food stall at the market for the past 20 years, says they were given a rude answer following a meeting with City Hall officers to seek a solution to their problem. "They told us the water disruption was not their responsibility. They even asked us to find our own water source." Because of the water disruptions, he says, traders have no choice but to use water from a nearby fire hose reel. "We depend on the fire hose for water despite knowing it is illegal for us to take water from the hose. What are we supposed to do? We are left with no choice." Yee also says he is at the market as early as 5am so he can fill up several pails. Another trader, Tung Hock Kiat, 41, says he has to bring water from his house. "Everyday, I fill up five to six barrels of water from my house, load them up in my

van and bring them here," says the vegetarian mixedrice stall operator. He says he has to bring clean water from his house as he cooks in his stall. "At about 11.30am, when I close my stall, I make another trip to my house to fetch five or six more pails of water which I bring back to my stall to clean up." Having nowhere to turn to, the traders have decided to bring the matter up with Wangsa Maju MCA chairman Datuk Yew Teong Look.

● AT a meeting attended

by Yew, City Hall and Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) yesterday, it was found that the water disruption was most probably caused by two "bypass" pipes attached to Syabas' main water source to the market. It was decided they would be removed. The Syabas representatives also agreed to increase the diameter of the water source pipe from one inch to two inches to enable faster flow. Meanwhile, Syabas corporate communications executive director Abdul Halem Mat Som says an investigation will be carried out to determine who fixed the two "bypass" pipes.

"Stealing water is a serious matter. They can be charged under the Water Service Industry Act 2006 and, if found guilty, can be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed for two years, or both. "On our part, Syabas can proceed with a civil suit to claim for losses incurred."

Good morning? Not on these days! THREE times a week, NG SU LI knows she will start her day badly, thanks to the garbage truck that collects rubbish in her area. She says while it is bad enough the truck comes as early as 6am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, she also has to endure the stench when it compresses the rub-

bish and squeezes the dirty water out. This is because this happens in the backlane behind her house. "Not only is my sleep disturbed by the noise, I also have to wake up to the most disgusting smell." NG says the stench will linger the whole day as some

rubbish is left on the backlane and only gets washed away if it rains. She says the problem temporarily stopped when she lodged several reports with Alam Flora two years ago but it resurfaced a few months ago. "I want Alam Flora to look into my complaint again and put a stop to it."

● AN ALAM FLORA SDN BHD spokesman says they are aware of NG's complaint. He says they have instructed the contractor to stop compressing rubbish near any residence as it

should be carried out at the end of the street, far away from houses. "This time, we will ensure the matter is not repeated. We will talk with the contractor again. In the next few days, I will personally go down to the

place to meet NG and to check the situation," says the spokesman. When contacted, NG confirms that compressing has stopped in the last three collections, and hopes it remains that way.

Bekalan dn Bhd orporat6, under Compao underation of vices in he Fedof Kuala rajaya. CLOGGED: The drains at the Kepong Baru commercial centre overflow whenever there is a downpour

THE residents of Kepong Baru are tired of complaining about the cleanliness of their commercial centre. They say City Hall and Alam Flora are to blame. The residents say City Hall must bear full responsibility for the failure of Alam Flora and its contractors to maintain the drains in the area. K.C. Tan says City Hall is passing the buck around and even pointing fingers at the public. “I have not seen work done to clean up the drains at the commercial centre. Things are getting worse by the day," says Tan, who has lived in Kepong Garden for nearly all his life and visits the banks and restaurants there frequently.

Another resident, Phang Loy, 60, says if Alam Flora is paid to clean the drains, it should not blame its contractors for doing a poor job. “If they have been doing their job consistently, the drains would not be so badly clogged like the one next to the wet market in Jalan Ambong 3. It stinks." Loy says the source of the problem here is an underground drain running below Jalan Ambong, built in the early 1960s, which is clogged with rubbish. Whenever there is a downpour, water in the drains overflows onto the roads. “I have seen motorcyclists falling because of potholes that are covered by water from the

"We can only hope they will continue to be diligent in carrying out their duties to keep the area clean."

● KUALA LUMPUR City Hall corporate communications director Anwar Mohd Zain says it will follow up on the complaints with Alam Flora to ensure the Kepong Baru commercial centre is kept clean at all times. He says City Hall will also step up its enforcement. "The hawkers operating there also have to keep the place clean. At the same time, residents are advised against throwing their rubbish indiscriminately."

Flying zookeepers (July 14)

Abuse continues

THE announcement by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) that they have set up a force of "flying zookeepers" looks good but, as usual, it lacks substance or relation to reality. In the past seven days, we, Nature Alert, have submitted no less than 12 separate official complaints to Perhilitan, photographically documenting animal abuse and neglect at the government-owned Malacca Zoo and the private-

ly-owned A’Famosa Resort. We were able to do this while posing as tourists although we were unable to access behind the scenes. Clearly, what we saw was only the tip of the iceberg concerning wildlife issues at both locations. This begs the questions: why have Perhilitan not observed these violations previously and will they do so now they are confronted, not for the first time, with hard evidence

of animal abuse? If the past is anything to go by, Perhilitan will posture, procrastinate, make excuses and then do nothing. The department has a long, overly friendly and chequered history when dealing with zoos. Animals clearly come second to personal friendships with zoo staff. Offers of free expertise to advise Perhilitan on what species such as orangutans, tigers, etc., need by way of

enclosures and food, have all been ignored. Perhilitan appears to prefer instead to stumble from one public relations disaster to another, while the animals continue to suffer as they always have. It is time for the top Perhi lit an management to be changed. Sean Whyte Nature Alert

Special task force overdue IT IS nice to hear a special task force has been formed to 'police' zoos that do not comply with Perhilitan's new regulations on zoo operations supervision, under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010. For your information, each time I accompany foreign tourists to our local zoos, I feel ashamed that most of the

animals appear neglected and malnourished. It was as if the animals do not have sufficient enrichment tools to keep them occupied in their enclosures. All we could see was the animals staring back at the visitors with a kind of desperate look. Most, if not all, are kept in

small cages and can hardly move around but a few feet. Imagine if we, humans, have to stay in small cubicles our entire life. Even their offsprings are no better, being raised also in small cubicles. Once these young ones mature and start breeding, their young ones will also be

KL Bersih 2.0 rally: Gains and losses (July 11)

Then, there is the incident where a rally supporter died at the scene. Why was he there in the first place knowing his condition, and the rally declared as illegal? If he was caught in the melee, why should the police take the blame? I also read that a senator, who should know better, called for a motion to discuss police brutality, which was rightly rejected by the Speaker. Looking at the criticism they are receiving, I doubt in the future the police will be that nice if illegal street demonstrations are staged.

WHILE I do not support the illegal rally last Saturday, I feel it is ridiculous for these traders to take legal action against the Bersih 2.0 organisers. First and foremost, these businesses should not worry their income may have dropped for one day just because of the rally. All this while, they have been carrying out their businesses uninterrupted. It won't make much difference if the shops close for just one day. As a frequent visitor to the area, I have also noticed the prices of some of the items sold there are higher than those in supermarkets or hypermarkets. Each time the fuel price goes up, these traders are the first to hike up the prices of their goods. When questioned, they simply answer: "Harga petrol naik (Petrol price has gone up)." My question to them is, will the prices go down if the fuel price goes down? I doubt it very much. Although the rally was illegal, the traders should show some concern for us, consumers from the middle-class.

Anandh

Concerned consumer

Job well done by cops I leave it to the authorities concerned to catch these culprits and punish them as necessary. As a matter of fact, why was it that so many people still converged into the city centre when they had been told to call off the illegal rally and stay away? Did they expect the police to keep quiet when the safety and livelihood of the majority of the people were disrupted? The police, in order to contain the situation, had no choice but to disperse the crowd and detain some of the participants. Under detention, they were even feted to food and drinks. Is this police brutality?

Meng

Traders should not sue

PATIENT: The police exercised restraint during the illegal rally

THE police force are the backbone of the nation and it saddens me to see so much criticism levelled against them after the illegal July 9 rally. How does one expect the police to perform in that situation where the rally organisers have been declared illegal? In my opinion, the police have handled this rally with much patience and tact and exercised restraint. Under such circumstances, how could the illegal participants talk of police brutality when there wasn't any? Everybody knows the videoclips shown online can easily be edited to show false and untrue depiction of the event to discredit the police force.

raised in the same old small cubicles. Imagine if any of us are put through the same circumstances. That said, why did Perhilitan take such a long time to make the move to improve the condition of animals in these zoos?

NEGLECTED: The task force will offer protection for animals but will it become a reality?

THE MALAY MAIL-DUTCH LADY HAMPER FOR CHARITY THE best opinion of the week as decided by the editor will win a hamper from Dutch Lady Malaysia for charitable institutions. Readers are encouraged to nominate charities deserving of this gesture. The Malay Mail will deliver the winning hamper.

KL Help for rally-hit traders (July 12)

Don't scare away investors IF IT wasn't because the Bersih 2.0 organisers had pressed on with the rally, the police would not have to block the roads to the city. From the way I see it, the rally participants only cared about themselves. Have they ever thought about the rest of us, who just want to

go on with our lives? We should realise that by creating unrest in the country, our economy will be affected in the long run. If such rallies are held often, who would want to invest in our country anymore? Peace-loving observer

Blame the rally organisers THE Bersih 2.0 rally organisers should be blamed and held responsible for the losses incurred, not the police. What they are doing is destroying our daily lives. The organisers are complaining about fairness. We,

as businessmen, want fairness, too. We don't want anything to do with politics. All we want is to continue doing business peacefully. Jai

Weekend shopping dashed THE police should not have closed the roads in the city centre, preventing the people from enjoying their normal weekend shopping in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Masjid India. Then these traders would have not lost their daily income.

My family members always go there during the weekend to do our shopping but we were unable to do so because of the roadblocks. We had to shop elsewhere, away from the city. Shaktiman

Ganja among the cactus Huge plantation found in Baja's remote desert

MEXICAN soldiers discovered the biggest marijuana plantation in the country in a remote desert surrounded by cactuses, a top army officer said yesterday. Soldiers patrolling the area found 120 hectares of marijuana plants being tended by dozens of men this week, said General Alfonso Duarte. He said

the crop, which was found in the state of Baja California, about 320 km south of San Diego, California, would have yielded about 120 tonnes and was worth about US$160 million (RM480m). "This is the biggest marijuana plantation we have found in the country," Duarte said. Most of the men tending the crop escaped capture but six suspects were arrested later at a military checkpoint. The men had dug a well at the barren site and pumped water through hoses to irrigate the plants, which were up to 2.5 metres tall.

President Felipe Calderon deployed tens of thousands of troops to the streets to take on powerful drug traffickers shortly after taking office in late 2006. Violence has spiraled since then, with more than 40,000 people killed across Mexico, hurting support for Calderon's conservative National Action Party (PAN), which faces an uphill struggle to secure reelection next July. Video reveals mind of accused killer OHIO jurors yesterday got a glimpse into the mind of a man accused of killing 11 women and storing their decomposing bodies for two years, watching a video of his police interrogation. Anthony Sowell, 51, has been little heard from during three weeks of gruesome testimony, including the jury's tour of the house of horrors in Cleveland, Ohio, where he allegedly raped, killed and buried his victims. But yesterday, prosecutors played the first part of a nine-hour interview Sowell had with the sex crimes unit and homicide detectives from the Cleveland police department after his arrest in October 2009. "I don't know what happened," Sowell said in the tape. "It was like a breakdown or something." In the first part of the video, detectives questioned him about a woman who accused him of raping her in 2009. He told police he had consensual, but kinky sex with the woman on two occasions. But once detectives began to question him about the decomposed bodies found inside the house, he broke down in the video, weeping. He faces the death penalty if convicted of nearly 100 charges, including kidnapping, rape, molesting a human corpse, robbery and attempted murder. — AFP

Forests soak up third of fossil fuel emissions

FORESTS play a larger role in Earth's climate system than previously suspected for both the risks from deforestation and the potential gains from regrowth, a benchmark study released yesterday revealed. The study, published in Science, provides the most accurate measure so far of the amount of greenhouse gases absorbed from the atmosphere by tropical, temperate and boreal forests, researchers said. "This is the first complete and global evidence of the over whelming role of forests in removing anthropogenic carbon dioxide," said co-author Josep Canadell, a scientist at CSIRO, Australia's national climate research centre in Canberra. " If you we re to s top deforestation tomorrow, the world's established and regrowing forests would remove half of fossil fuel emissions," he told media, describing the f indings as both "incredible" and "unexpected". Wo o d e d are a s a c ro s s the planet soak up fully a third of the fossil fuels released into the atmo-

sphere each year, some 2.4 billion tonnes of carbon, the study found. At the same time, the ongoing and barely constrained destruction of forests, mainly in the tropics, for food, fuel and development was shown to emit 2.9 billion tonnes of carbon annually, more than a quarter of all emissions ste m m i ng f rom hu man activity. Up to now, scientists have estimated that deforestation accounted for 12 to 20 per cent of total greenhouse gas output. The big surprise, said Canadell, was the huge capacity of tropical forests that have regenerated after logging or slash-and-burn land clearance to purge carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. "We estimate that tropical forest regrowth is removing an average of 1.6 billion tonnes of carbon each year," he said in an e-mail exchange. Adding up the new figures reveals that all the world's forests combined are a net "sink", or sponge, for 1.1 billion tonnes of carbon, the equivalent of 13 per

cent of all the coal, oil land gas burned across the planet annually. "That's huge. These are 'savings' worth billions of euros a year if that quantity had to be paid out by current mitigation (CO2 reduction) strategies or the price of carbon in the European market," Canadell said. The international team of climate scientists combined data, covering the period 1990 through 2007, from forests inventories, climate models and satellites to construct a profile of the role global forests have played as regulators of the atmosphere. In terms of climate change policy, the study has two critically important implications, said Canadell. The fact that previous s cience underest imate d both the capacity of woodlands to remove CO2, and the emissions caused by deforestation, means that "forests are even more at the forefront as a strategy to protect our climate," he said. It also follows that forests should play a larger role in emerging carbon markets. — AFP

Mount Lokon's fiery eruption AN Indonesian volcano erupted late yesterday, spewing rocks, lava and ash hundreds of metres into the air, an official said, three days after its alert status was raised to the highest level. There has been a significant rise in volcanic activity at Mount Lokon on Sulawesi island since June 9, prompting hundreds of people to evacuate the area. "There was a big eruption around 10.31pm local time, which saw ash, sand and

rocks thrown 1,500 metres into the air," government volcanologist Kristianto told media. Grass and shrubs in an area stretching 500 metres around the volcano were on fire but there was no immediate danger to people living nearby, he said. The volcano's status was raised to its highest red alert level after it spewed ash 500 metres into the air over the weekend, leading to a 3.5km evacuation zone being estab-

lished. "There is no mass panic because the community has already been warned of the situation and we are continuing to evacuate people," added Kristianto, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. Around 28,000 people live within the evacuation zone. The 1,580-metre Mount Lokon is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. It erupted in 1991, killing a Swiss tourist. — AFP

Big can of worms

Murdoch to face newspaper ethics questions in parliament RUPERT MURDOCH yesterday caved in to pressure from Britain's parliament to answer questions over alleged crimes at one of his newspapers, setting up a showdown with lawmakers keen to break the media mogul's grip on politics. British police arrested a ninth suspect, named by media as a former deputy editor of Murdoch's News of the World, adding weight to a government call for the media regulator to decide whether his business is fit to run British television stations. Murdoch, 80, has already been forced to close the News of the World and back down on his biggest acquisition plan yet, the buyout of British pay TV operator BSkyB, due to an outcry over allegations reporters accessed private phone messages. He and his son James, heir apparent to his News Corp empire, initially said they would not face questions from parliament's media committee over phone hacking and then reversed their decision after Prime Minister

David Cameron said they should attend. Rebekah Brooks, who runs Murdoch's British newspaper arm, News International, has agreed to be grilled by the committee. She was a friend of Cameron, who has echoed calls for her to go. Brooks, who edited the News of the World at the time of one of the most serious alleged incidents, said the police inquiry might restrict what she could say. Her concern was echoed by James

Murdoch in a letter to the committee confirming his and his father's attendance. Speculation was growing at News International's east London headquarters that the company might be reconsidering its position on Brooks after resisting pressure for her to quit, a source familiar with the situation said. Murdoch, a US citizen, said he would give evidence to a public inquiry announced by Cameron after questions

were raised over the role of some police officers in the scandal and over the relations between British politicians and media owners. British Business Secretary Vince Cable said of the swift volte-face by politicians queuing up to condemn the Murdochs. "It is a little bit like the end of a dictatorship when everybody suddenly discovers they were against the dictator," he told BBC radio. — Reuters

Fewer movies with tobacco, less teen smoking: study THE number of US movies in which an actor lights up fell sharply between 2005 and last year, and this could have contributed to the decline in smoking among US teens, a study released yesterday says. A majority of movies, 55 per cent, that scored huge box office success in the United States last year had no scenes that included tobacco use, compared with a third of topgrossing films in 2005, the study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says. In the same six-year period, the number of what are called "tobacco incidents" in topgrossing movies fell by 56 per cent, but still clocked in at nearly 2,000 scenes where an actor used tobacco either openly, on screen, or implicitly, off-screen, the study says. "The percentages of 2010 top-grossing movies with no tobacco incidents were the highest observed in two decades," the CDC says in the study published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. — AFP LONDON

Offshore gaming firms may face taxes in UK A PROPOSED change in the way Britain licenses gambling operators which are based abroad, may pave the way for the government to tax offshore gaming firms. T h e D e p a r t m e nt f o r Culture, Media and Sport unveiled plans yesterday to regulate remote gambling at the point of consumption, not supply, which they said would help protect UK gamblers. "The current system for regulating remote gambling doesn't work. Overseas operators get an unfair advantage over UK-based companies, and British consumers who gamble online may have little or no protection depending on where the operator they deal with happens to be based," said the minister responsible for gambling policy, John Penrose. Many betting firms operate from offshore tax havens, including Betfair, the world's largest betting exchange. It followed Ladbrokes and William Hill by moving part of its business to Gibraltar in March. The Gibraltar tax rate is one per cent compared with 15 per cent in Britain. – AFP

By ANU VENUGOPAL anu@mmail.com.my THERE is no doubt that music has the means of capturing the heart and penetrating the soul. The Choir of The Philharmonic Society of Selangor (The Phil) hopes to capture the heart and penetrate into the soul with their vocals from July 21 to 24 at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac). Kicking off their series of charity concerts entitled 'Heart & Soul 2011', the choir will be singing their hearts out with the aim of channelling proceeds to local-based charities across Malaysia. One of the oldest choirs in the country, The Phil has been actively donating money to charities since its inception in 1958. This time around, The Phil is working together with All Women's Action Society (Awam), the SIC–PIHD Children Learning Centre (For the Poor) and Hospis Malaysia, among others. “The concert is also a bit of

Soulful singing for cha a 'graduation concert' for our new singers who joined us earlier this year. It's a special concert because this year is the first time where, in an effort to be inclusive, we have stopped auditions and accept whoever who wants to sing,” said Cheryl Teh, The Phil’s Choir Director and Chairperson. She hopes the audience will be able to see beyond the show and get a glimpse of how much hard work and how far the group, consisting of 100 members, has come in these short months, and perhaps see themselves in the different singers. “'Heart & Soul 2011' is about songs that touch the heart and uplift the soul. I actually came up with the theme back in 2003 when I directed the choir for a season then. We perform songs that are crowd favourites and we also aim to work with various charities to benefit from this collaboration,” she added. Audience can look forward to a two-hour programme, including a medley of songs from Michael Jackson, Bee Gees and The Beatles. Among the songs that will be presented include I'll Be There, Thriller, Man in the Mirror Night Fever, Words, Stayin' Alive, Day Tripper, Can't Buy Me Love and Hey Jude. “I normally choose songs that are popular and tuneful as I want both the singers and the audience to enjoy them. For this concert, the Beatles medley was chosen especially to introduce their music to the younger ones, Bee Gees because they're crowd favourites and Micheal Jackson because he's timeless. Other songs were chosen because they have special meaning to the singers,” said Cheryl. One song that has

DORKY: The cast of Ah Beng The Movie: 3 Wishes

New movie confident to break through market Story and pictures By LOONG WAI TING THE year is 2011. And for the local entertainment scene, it is indeed a busy one thus far, especially when local movie producers seem to waste no time to announce their movie projects. This year alone, there are at least five Chinese movies — all made locally, which will be released early next year. As such, local DJ/actor Jack Lim is taking the opportunity to bring his loveable character Ah Beng, originally one of the characters in Tiger Woohoo, into the big screen in Ah Beng The Movie: 3 Wishes. The movie, which is slated for release in January, (just in time for Chinese New Year) is

ng songs that are crowd favourites

both relished by the mind and senses. Each with different themes — from religious devotion in classical dance to the contemporary message of Earth’s dance of revolt — there is variety to entertain different artistic palates. “In my mind, Divas & Devas has something special to offer. It is the conviction of the choreographers’ experience about life, love, art, relationships, faith, tradition, identity, community and finding a place for oneself that has brought them together,” said Ravi. Ravi will be presenting a contemporary dance piece, like dancer and choreographer Lavanya Selvarathnam

VARIETY: Expect a colourful show from 10 choreographers

while audience can expect a Classical Odissi piece from Geethashankaran Lam.

Classical Bharathanatyam fans will get a dose of the original from Nimal Raj and

Lim's first maiden venture into the business of filmmaking as executive producer. "This is actually my eighth film and it's like a baby to me," said Lim at the movie's launch recently. "So far, I've invested about RM1 million and I've decided to use the same actors and production team from my previous two movies — Tiger Woohoo and Great Day." The man in the director's seat is Silver, who has directed many local sitcoms, one of them being Ah Beng, which is currently in its third season. "This is my first time directing a Chinese movie. All these while I've been making only Malay movies. But then, I am confident to make something even better this time. I'm sure I can beat

director Chiu," he said. Director Chiu or Chiu Keng Guan directed the two previously successful movies — Great Day and Tiger Woohoo, the highest grossing local Chinese movie ever made. "I hope to keep the script a secret from everyone, but I can assure you it's going to be great. It's something fresh and exciting. Moviegoers will be in for a treat the moment the first scene is shown," Lim said. Unable to resist the urge to share exclusive news from the making of Ah Beng The Movie: 3 Wishes, Lim revealed that the opening of the movie itself is shocking, although he did say that his "character actually died in the first scene". "Another thing is, I plan to include a car chase scene as

well as principal shooting will begin in August and location has been set within the city. We're still under discussion with the Government," Lim said, while jokingly asked the media to not compare his movie with Dante Lam's The Viral Factor, which recently wrapped up its shooting in Malaysia. On his target at the local box office, Lim said it's not important if the project makes money. "As long as everyone is happy, that's more important."

Chandrika Sivalingam and relish Indrani Manickam’s traditional masterpiece. Those who like a little contemporary in the dance are likely to enjoy three pieces by Rithaudin Abdul Kadir, Lex Lakshman and Komathi, while those who enjoy a little drama will get their share with Sharan’s dance drama. The choreographers in this production have either collaborated in events and shows, and everyone shares the experience of running a studio, teaching, choreographing, involved with artistic direction or actively involved in dance and theatre. “The dance scene in Malaysia is pretty divided and territorial. Arts should be

cherished, shared and should not be politised for own self. As such, Asthana Arts have worked in few collaborations, including the Kuala Lumpur Navarathiri Dance Festival where we invited various dance schools in the Klang Valley to perform,” said Ravi. Putting up dance performances from 2009, Asthana Arts has come up with collaborations in Panchasunthara (2009), Mahakavi (2010), Thirunangai — I Came As Man , I Left As Woman (2010) and The Unquenched Thirst (2011). They are also organisers of the Kuala Lumpur Navarathiri Dance Festival for the past four years and have represented the Indian arts segment at Citrawarna 2010 and 2011.

Under the artistic direction of scriptwriter and playwright Lam Gooi Ket, the performance is in aid of Asthana Arts Young Performing Artist Fund. The fund is aimed to help the younger generation in their pursuit of the arts. Asthana Arts has two dance studios in Little India Brickfields and the Annexe Central Market. — By ANU VENUGO-

Adam is Liverpool’s new set-piece executioner By JOSEPH KAOS JR joejr@mmail.com.my

Monday 25 April 2011

THE arrival of Uruguayan hotshot Luis Suarez and Britain’s most expensive player ever Andy Carroll to Liverpool in January was heralded as a new era of sorts at the Merseyside club. Not only were fans excited about the boldness and the spend-ability of new club owners Fenway Sports Group, they also relished the exciting prospect of a SuarezCarroll strike force. The American consortium spent a whopping £57m (RM277m) on the duo — a record high for Liverpool. But it could have stretched past the £60m mark if the transfer of a certain Charlie Adam had

CHARLIE ADAM FACTS

1. Adam comes from a family of footballers. His father was a professional with Dundee United among other clubs while younger brother Grant is a goalkeeper at Glasgow Rangers. 2. The Dundonian began his career at Rangers and made his first-team bow in the 2003-04 campaign before a loan spell at Ross County, where he hit the headlines by scoring from inside his own half against St Mirren. 3. The Saints were so impressed they took him on loan themselves. Adam then returned to Ibrox in the summer of 2006 and was handed his opportunity to shine by gaffer Paul Le Guen. He admits to changing his diet on the advice of the Frenchman. “I’d never really thought of

materialised last Jan 31. Liverpool were engaged in intense talks with Blackpool over their 26-year-old captain on that astonishing deadline, but as midnight beckoned, both clubs could not agree on a deal. Newly-promoted Blackpool were adamant to hold on to their best player and even rejected Adam’s transfer request. The transfer never took place in January, and Adam was to continue skippering his club until season’s end, during which he continued with his impressive form which subsequently got him nominated for PFA’s Playerof-the-Year Award. His stellar p e r for manc e, however, was not enough to keep “The S e asiders” from being relegated on the season’s final day.

When Liverpool came back again this summer with a £7m offer, it was almost impossible for Blackpool to keep their captain. And after a six-months wait The Reds finally got their man. Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish was particularly pleased to finally capture Adam. “Our patience has paid off,” said Dalglish on the sixmonth pursuit. “We’re looking forward to Charlie being a success here,” he added. “He made a huge contribution to Blackpool last year and we’re looking forward to him making the same contribution here. Adam was similarly delighted with the move and is relishing t h e

prospect of playing with the likes of club captain Steven Gerrard and Suarez. The Scotland star was also humble enough to admit that there was still room for improvement in his game. “I want to learn and there are some of the best players in the world at this club so if I can learn from them I am going to improve as a player.” Liverpool are expected to capitalise on Adam’s renowned set-piece skills and long range passes, as they try to unleash the aerial prowess of the 191cm Carroll. The club can trust him to provide the goals as well. Adam scored 13 goals last season. While a good number of the goals were penalties, he’s also scored plenty from freekicks — who can forget that smasher against Manchester United? He’s even scored directly from a corner kick against West Ham this year his left footed curling shot drifted past the West Ham goalkeeper and straight into goal. That’s what you call a set-piece specialist!

He also secured his first international cap for Scotland in a friendly with Austria in May 2007. 5. After struggling for regular senior action in 2008-09 the midfielder moved south of the border to join Blackpool on loan. But his Seasiders’ debut ended in acrimony as he was sent off in a 3-2 reversal against Doncaster. Nonetheless, he would soon find his feet at Bloomfield Road and his loan deal was made permanent that summer for a cut-price £500,000.

Return of the King KUALA LUMPUR

Hopes are high with Dalglish at the helm

By Jonathan Cheah Malaysian Red and White Kopites (MyRawk) After a hugely-disappointing season, salvaged only by the return of “King” Kenny Dalglish and the emergence of a heir to his famous No 7 shirt, Luis Suarez, Liverpool fans are relieved that the club are finally back in safe hands. The stability and new commercial success of Liverpool have given everyone a new sense of belief that the club are finally heading back to where they belong, the top four. The performance of the team in the second half of last season certainly offered everyone a glimpse of what a rejuvenated Liverpool are capable of. Players and fans alike will credit the management of Dalglish for their muchimproved performance in the second leg of last season. Compared to his not-so-popular predecessor Roy Hodgson, Dalglish’s brand of football was more eye-opening. Liverpool, often criticised for playing “boring” football, suddenly transformed into an exciting pass-and-move team reminiscent of the Reds during Dalglish’s playing days. Also, the return of the “King” has definitely boosted morale in the dressing room. Players know who Dalglish is and what he has done in the past. The players have displayed more desire and hunger in their game since Dalglish’s arrival on Jan 22. Although Liverpool ended sixth last season, statistics show that if the league had started after Jan 22, Liverpool would rank third behind Chelsea and Manchester United. They would have also ranked first in the goal difference league with +19. Hopes are high that under Dalglish’s helm, Liverpool will finally be able to break back into the top four of the Premier League and qualify for Champions League next season. It may be too early to think about winning the EPL, but there is no reason why they can’t challenge for the top positions. Liverpool should, however, place utmost priority in signing an established left winger this summer, as this position has been our Achilles’ heel for years. Not since the days of John Barnes or Steve McManaman have we seen a great left-winger take on the opposing fullbacks with ease on

the hallowed turf of Anfield. We need quality crosses from the flanks to take advantage of Andy Carroll’s aerial prowess. King Kenny and Damien Comolli are following Fenway Sports Group’s policy in buying younger emerging talents. This makes sense as it is easier to integrate them into the club’s philosophy and hone them into the kind of players we need. However, we need to release fringe players adding to the already huge chunk of the wages bill before we can proceed. Although an expensive route, Dalglish’s eye for British talents will ensure Liverpool keep the British heartbeat of the club and adhere

to the “home-grown” players rule as per stipulated by UEFA. Lots of Kopites want the club to sign more established (foreign) players, but in the long run the benefits of this policy will far outweigh the negatives. Like most Kopites, I am eagerly waiting for the season to start. The thought of seeing how the young local talents and the newly-signed players will combine with Gerrard, Carragher, Reina, Kuyt, Suarez and Carroll is mouth-watering. Most of all, I can’t wait to finally see Liverpool play in my own backyard. The future is bright and it’s certainly Red! — www.my-rawk.com

He was born in the English city and spent his first eight years as a Scouser before coming to Malaysia. “We stayed in a shophouse at Wavertree Road and there was a park across the road. That was where I first learnt how to kick a ball,” recalled Adney. “Liverpool has changed dramatically. We were fortunate to stay in a nice ne i g hb ou rhood but there were dodgy areas as well. It’s different now.” The youngest child in the family, it was only natural for Adney

to idolise the likes of Liverpool stars Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman. Today, he is a fan of Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez. However, both these players are not in KL for the match. Deep down inside, Adney is disappointed he will not be part of the action against the Kops. Adney played for the national team at the Korat Sea Games in 2007 and was later called up by national coach Datuk K. Rajagobal for a friendly match against Hong Kong followed by the preWorld Cup Round 1 clash against Taiwan. However, Adney was dropped from the pre-World Cup list due to an injury. “I’m all recovered now but I guess coach Rajagobal al-

ready has his set of players. I’m also disappointed that I didn’t make the cut for the match against Chelsea. “I was part of the national team that took on Chelsea (2008) and Manchester United (2009). When I heard Liverpool were coming to Malaysia I was really excited...

but I’m not on the list.” Adney, nevertheless, consoled himself by saying “everything happens for a reason”. “I won’t mind being on the bench throughout the whole game. Being part of the first 11 is another story altogether.”

Adney will join his friends to watch the much-anticipated match from the stands. Who will Adney be rooting for? “I want to see my teammates do well and at the same time would like to see Liverpool play. So I’ll be rooting for both teams”.

Pacheco and Spearing out to impress the boss

Two players who were successful while on loan will be hoping for similar luck as they try to break into the Liverpool squad for the upcoming Premier League season. Thus it is vital that Daniel Pacheco and Jay Spearing take the opportunity during the Far East Tour to leave a lasting impression on manager Kenny Dalglish. Pacheco, 20, played a key role as Norwich won a place in the Premier League during his temporary stint at Carrow Road. With international stars

Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll ahead of him in the pecking order at the Reds, the Spanish hitman accepted the fact that his career will progress more quickly if he spends time away from Anfield. But his strong performances for Norwich has given him the added confidence to state his case for inclusion in the Premier League. The promise and potential possessed by the Spanish sensation are unquestionable. Signed from Barcelona, where he earned the nickname El Asesino (“The Assassin”) thanks

to his lethal finishing skills, Pacheco has gone on to prove his ability since his arrival in 2007, with many encouraging cameos for the first team adding to his prominent status in the reserve side. After helping the reserve side to become both the Premier Reserve League’s Northern and National Champions in 2007/2008, Pacheco progressed further and made his first team debut as a substitute in the dead-rubber Champions League match at home to Fiorentina last season. His League debut came

soon after and he shone during his brief spell on the pitch as a substitute against Wolves. However, he made his biggest impression on the first team during our inaugural Europa League game against Unirea Urziceni. Spearing made his Liverpool debut as a substitute in a 3-1 win at PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in December 2008 before his first Premier League start in a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland in October 2009. He also spent a spell on loan

at Championship club Leicester at the end of the 2009-10 campaign. “Leicester was a massive turning point for my career. It made me grow up, not just as a footballer but as a person as well. I think I matured from it and came back to Liverpool a stronger and better player,” said Spearing recently to LFC Weekly. Spearing’s progress and the departures of players like Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano meant that the youngster had a more than likely shot at a first-team berth.

Daniel Pacheco

And he has taken the chance, thanks to the hard work he put in last season which was duly rewarded by the two managers – Roy Hodgson and Dalglish. “I remember at one point there were six players in my position in front of me and it was hard to see when I could possibly be given the chance to break into the first team,” said Spearing. “Many lads have moved on but fortunately for me times have changed and I have been given a chance to show what I can do.” — By SS Dhaliwal

What local Kopites have to say

‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ I’ve been very busy in Kuching trying to get a ticket and training pass. However, I managed to get just a ticket online from Ticketpro. Since i’m unfamiliar with the Bukit Jalil area, I did a search on google map so that I will know how to get there. I’m really excited about Liverpool being in Malaysia for three days. I can’t afford to go to Anfield and so this is a very good alternative. “Keep red and never walk alone” is always on my mind.

Lilian Jacqueline Henry (Kuching)

IT used to hurt so bad that I’d ask God, “Why? why? why? What have I done to deserve any of this?” Then one fine day, He answered me. “My boy, my sons in Red are coming to MALAYSIA’.” What more need I say or ask now? Shashitharan Naidu (Kuala Lumpur)

FOR almost 40 years i’ve supported Liverpool but never watched them play. I’ll be a Kopite at Bukit Jalil. This will certainly be something for to talk about when I’m old and grey. Helen Ng (Selangor)

A POINT of no return, a game of no regret..even without Captain Fantastic. The passion, the excitement, the heartbeat...they all keep pounding faster. No words can describe what’s in every Red’s mind now...only on July 16 will this show. Let’s get loud. Wan Hasmanira Wan Mohamed (Ampang)

“VOICE to shout - check. New Liverpool jersey - check. Tickets check. Malaysian flag - check. I’m good to go.” Suran (Setapak)

I AM as excited as any other Malaysian Liverpool fan about the arrival of the team in Malaysia. It is also the firt time for most of the Reds in Malaysia. We shall welcome them with the typical, warm Malaysian hospitality. We will create an “Anfield” in Bukit Jalil. This is to ensure that the Liverpool will take back with them great memories of Malaysia. YNWA in Malaysia.

“LIVERPOOL FC is more than just a football club. It’s an institution that embodies what brotherhood is all about – cutting across generations the world over, with family-like bond among supporters, stemmed in unquestionable values, unparalleled history and a unique philosophy that is unmatched by any other establishment.”

Raymond Chew (Kuala Lumpur)

M Prakash Dass (Petaling Jaya)

NO WAY we are going to miss this! I’ve bought 14 tickets for friends and family members, and one of them is even an ardent Manchester United supporter. All of us will be wearing Liverpool gear. Terima kasih, Liverpool YNWA

Agger still waiting for big break DANIEL Agger’s career at Liverpool since signing for the club in January 2006 never really took off. He has, had to battle numerous injuries which limited his Premier League appearances to just 93 in five and a half seasons. Having just recuperated from a knee injury suffered in March, Agger is now anxious to put his injuries behind. “Hopefully, that’s a thing of the past and I won’t have to miss matches for long durations. It can be frustrating to spend so much time on the sidelines,” said Agger. Agger also hoped for

ONE of the first of things Dirk Kuyt (pic) noticed when started on Liverpool’s Asia Tour 2011 was their large following in the region. He was surprised to see fans going crazy. “I had expected to see many fans but I didn’t know it would be this crazy,” said Kuyt. When Liverpool rolled into the One World Hotel in Bandar Utama early yesterday morning, several fans had already gathered to welcome them. “I was pleasantly surprised to see many excited fans. It’s good that the club decided to visit Asia. “It’s sad that Steven Gerrard could not be present. I’m sure he is disappointed

about not being able to give back to the fans,” added Kuyt. The Liverpool captain is recovering from a groin surgery that ended his campaign in mid-March. Kuyt hopes the skipper will recover in time for the 201112 season. As for Liverpool’s match against Malaysia at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow, Kuyt admitted he didn’t know anything about the opponents. “The time difference has caused jetlag but we have recovered, though not fully. Everything should be fine though. We have a training session later (yesterday evening) and that would be a good workout.

“We need these matches to be prepared for the new season. The new players will have to gel so we can form a good understanding on the field,” said Kuyt. The Dutchman was delighted with the arrivals of Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson. He hopes the club can secure Stewart Downing as well in the coming days. “Their arrival, and that of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll last season, will make Liverpool a major force this season. We want to win the league but it is going to be difficult,” he added. Kuyt expects Liverpool to do better than in last season, with Champions League qualification mandatory.

some luck in his quest to stay injury-free this season. The Danish centreback was met alongside legendary Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish. Agger admitted that things were

different when Dalglish took over the hotseat at Anfield for the second time. “It was like new life was injected into the team. After awhile we (players and manager) bonded well and begun to move forward. “We still have a long a way to go as Liverpool should be challenging for honours,” he said. While Agger is proud to be part of Liverpool’s historic first visit to Malaysia, he didn’t seem comfortable with the weather. “The weather is not helping us at all. It will be even worse that the match will be in the evening.”

For much of Liverpool’s history, the team’s home colours have been all red, though this has not always been the case. When the club was founded their kit bore a resemblance to Everton’s colours at the time. The blue and white quartered shirts were used until 1894, when the club adopted the city’s colour of red. The city’s symbol of the liver bird was adopted as the club’s crest in 1901, though it was not incorporated into the kit until 1955. Liverpool continued to wear red shirts and white shorts until 1964 when then-Liverpool manager Bill Shankly decided to change to an all red strip.

Shankly wanted his players to be more distinctly dressed. He decided to update the kit, changing the white shorts and socks to red. Liverpool played in all red for the first time against Anderlecht, as Ian St. John recalled in his autobiography: “He thought the colour scheme would carry psychological impact — red for danger, red for power. He came into the dressing room one day and threw a pair of red shorts to Ronnie Yeats. ‘Get into those shorts and let’s see how you look,’ he said. ‘Christ, Ronnie, you look awesome, terrifying. You look 7ft tall.’ ‘Why not go the whole hog, boss?’ I suggested.

“Why not wear red socks? Let’s go out all in red. Shankly approved and an iconic kit was born.” Liverpool’s away colours are traditionally either white shirts and black shorts or all yellow. However, in 1987 an all grey kit was introduced, which was used until the 1991–92 centenary season, when it was replaced by a combination of green shirts and white shorts. After various colour combinations in the 1990s, including gold and navy, bright yellow, black and grey, and ecru, the club alternated between yellow and white away kits until the 2008–09 season, when the grey kit was re-introduced. The

club’s third kit was designed for European away matches, though on occasions when the current away kit clashes with a team’s home kit in domestic matches, the kit would be worn. The current kits are designed by Adidas, who made the club’s kits between 1985 and 1996. The only other branded shirts worn by the club was made by Umbro until 1985 and Reebok for 10 seasons starting in 1996. Liverpool were the first English professional club to have a sponsor’s logo on their shirts, after they agreed to a deal with Hitachi in 1979. Since then the club have been sponsored by Crown

Paints, Candy, Carlsberg and Standard Chartered Bank. The contract with Carlsberg, which was signed in 1992, was the longest agreement in English top-flight football. The association with Carlsberg ended at the start of the 2010–11 season with Standard Chartered Bank becoming the club’s sponsor. In April 2011, Liverpool reportedly signed a sponsorship agreement with Warrior Sports worth £25 million (RM122m) per season as of the 2012/13 season, overtaking the £23.3 million paid by Nike for supplying Manchester United and the previous deal from Adidas worth £13 million.

Crest history The famous liver bird first took its perch on the lefthand side of the chest in the 1950 FA Cup Final defeat to Arsenal and is a symbol that has continued to signify the prestige involved with playing for Liverpool FC. The crest was revived for the 1955–56 season, and was appearing out of a white oval with L.F.C. embroided below the liver bird. This version was used until 1969. In 1968, the decision was taken to introduce a more modern version of the club crest. The liver bird was now embroidered directly onto the team’s shirts with the removal of the white oval and shields. For seven years this was used in white but from 1976 the emblem was changed to gold and reverting to white when the club dropped Umbro as their kit supplier and signed a contract with Adidas in 1985. In 1992, the club adopted a new crest to celebrate their centenary. The familiar liver bird remained the centrepiece but now appeared against a red and white shield.

1950

1987–92

Above the shield is a representation of the Shankly Gates with the title of club’s famous anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. The twin flames at either side are symbolic of the Hillsborough memorial outside Anfield, where an eternal flame burns in memory of those who died in the disaster. Since 1992 the crest has only undergone some minor changes until it was updated in 1999. The present crest has been relatively unchanged since then when it first appeared on the shirt in just two colours but after 2002 it appeared in full colour.

Legend of Bill Shankly On Dec 4 1997, a statue of Bill Shankly, created from bronze, was unveiled at the visitors’ centre in front of the Kop. Standing at over 8feet (2.4m) tall, the statue depicts Shankly wearing a fan’s scarf around his neck, in a familiar pose he adopted when receiving applause from fans. Inscribed on the statue are the words: “Bill Shankly — He Made the People Happy”.

WIlliam “Bill” Shankly (Sept 2, 1913-Sept 29, 1981) was one of Britain’s most successful and respected football managers. Shankly was also a fine player, whose career was interrupted by the Second World War. He played nearly 300 times in The Football League for Preston North End and represented Scotland seven times, as well as playing for Partick Thistle and Carlisle United. He is most remembered, however, for his achievements as a manager, particularly with Liverpool. Shankly took charge of Liverpool when they were bottom of the Second Division but soon established them as one of the major forces in the English game. During his 15 years at the club they won three league championships, two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup, before his surprise retirement after winning the 1974 FA Cup Final.

Carroll - the new Number Nine Flamboyant hunk’s task to live up to legendary strikers By JOSEPH KAOS JR joejr@mmail.com.my

SO, how special is Andy Carroll? In January, Liverpool’s new owners Fenway Sports Group forked out a massive £35m to take the 22-yearold forward from his boyhood club Newcastle. The £35m was not only a Liverpool record — it was also the highest amount of money spent on a British player ever. The club were determined that Carroll was the ideal player to replace World Cup winner Torres as Liverpool’s chief striker, that they felt such the huge sum was justifiable. And the club never hesitated in handing the youngster the No.9 shirt worn by Torres. The legendary shirt number – second best only to Kenny Dalglish’s No. 7 – was also worn by Liverpool greats like Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler. It didn’t just happen at Liverpool. At Carroll’s former club Newcastle, he was also handed the No.9 shirt worn by Newcastle legends Alan Shearer, Malcolm Macdonald and Hughie Gallacher. And it was Carroll in fact who requested for that

famous jersey worn by his idol Shearer. “I went in and knew the number nine shirt was empty. So, I thought I’d go in and ask for it. They gave me it.” Such was the confidence of the then-21 year old and such was the belief Newcastle had that Carroll is deserving of the legendary shirt. Both Newcastle and Liverpool knew the 193cm lad was destined for big things. Even Carroll’s boyhood hero Shearer and former coach at Newcastle has only praise for Carroll’s playing style — which many have incidentally claim is reminiscent of Shearer. “I like the way he bullies defenders. He’s a nononsense type of centreforward – technically good, devastating in the air with a rocket left food, and deceptively fast,” said Shearer. Carroll had an impressive start of the season with Newcastle prior to his move to Liverpool. He bagged 11 goals before he sustained a prolonged injury in December. His goals bore the hallmarks of a classic no.9 — either they were unstop-

pable headers or ferocious shots off his left foot. Reds fans will definitely remember how he blasted a low 25-yard drive past Pepe Reina during Newcastle’s 3-1 demolition of Liverpool at St James Park last November. It was enough to convince Liverpool to court him to their side. His young age was an added advantage and befits Fenway’s philosophy of investing big in young sportsmen with huge potentials. However, Carroll didn’t have much time to settle at Anfield due to his injury. He featured only eight times for the club and scored twice. But it was the two goals against Manchester City that reaffirmed his masters’ belief in his potential ability. The first goal was devastating first time left foot shot from 25 yards. In the second goal, Carroll charged into the box and out-jumped City defender Aleksandar Kolarov to meet Raul Meireles’ cross and headed it past Joe Hart. The Anfield faithful went beserk. They loved what they were seeing. They even

forgot they lost a certain Spaniard back in January. And there is more to come. Back from his injury, Liverpool will start the new season with Suarez and Carroll upfront and it will be the defining season of the much-touted partnership. With new acquirements Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam — and with the possibility of Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing joining the side — Liverpool squad looks a more solid bunch next season. But all eyes will be on Liverpool’s new No. 9 and how he attempts to justify his price tag and shirt number. “It was a lot of money but I’ll do what I have to do to prove the money was worth it,” said Carroll, when he was first unveiled to the press as a Liverpool player. “I am here to score goals and create chances for the team and that is what I can do,” he said, with sheer conviction and confidence. Try as you might, it’s hard to deny that there is a future for the young Geordie. The boy is indeed special.

Graffiti: A stamp on youth’s creativity

By JEREMY TAN lifestyle@mmail.com.my

THE YoUNITY Street Fest 2011 was an event solely focused on glorifying our young talents. Skateboarders, singers and a host of other activities recently set the stage for a good time for youths. While there were undoubtedly a lot going on that it may prove difficult to keep track of, two activities in particular stole the spotlight. One of them was an initiative by Dell & Microsoft Malaysia

called Youth Express, which essentially was about expression by youth through aesthetics, art and design specifically. Handpicked by Dell to put a stamp on the creative prowess of local youth, five young graffiti artists took this opportunity to showcase their skills with shakes and sprays. All five artists are apparently good in their art form, such as Tha-B who is one of the pioneers in the graffiti art scene in Malaysia, specialising mainly in typography. This was an opportunity to show to the general public the beauty of graffiti, and to correct the misconception that graffiti is simply just vandalism. The second prominent showcase of the YoUNITY showStreet Fest 2011 was a show

Giving nine young designers the avenue to show off their latest urban collection, centred upon a youth-inclined urban street theme, it was Nikon Malaysia’s idea of promoting creativity amongst young designers to uplift the fashion standards. In collaboration with YODA (Young Designer Arena), the nine budding designers wasted no opportunity donning the models with their interpretation of urban street fashion. The modelling showcase culminated in a surprise when three models walked off the

stage and engaged the crowd by unveiling the Nikon Coolpix S1100, which was paraded as the only compact digital camera with a build-in projector function that hopefully adds a new spectrum of fun in picture taking. In the end, the event participants ended up capitalising on this moment to snap away and capture the moment. For those who have missed the probable fun, no matter. YoUNITY Street Fest will probably have a 2012 edition. Maybe then you can see just what the youth of our country has to offer creatively.

Silver lining for men in black PETALING JAYA: football

Referees hope the rest of their money comes in before Ramadan By HARESH DEOL haresh@mmail.com.my

THE local referee community admitted to receiving half of their wages for the month of April since the FA of Malaysia (FAM) held their exco meeting on Tuesday. T h e y, h o w e v e r, h o p e that the remainder will be banked into their account soon as they prepare for the holy month of Ramadan and Hari Raya celebrations. "We have checked and found that FAM has banked in half of April's salary. We hope the rest will be settled soon," said a referee who declined to be named. Several referees turned to Mailsport — as published last Thursday — after the national body failed to pay their wages since April. Some claimed they had yet to receive their salaries for officiating matches in Pahang and Sarawak in 2009. There were also claims of referees conducting fitness

tests in 2005 but have yet to be paid till today. Earlier, insiders claimed FAM had financial issues as money from their sponsors, mainly Astro and Telekom Malaysia, had yet to reach them. However, those close to the Astro-FAM deal claim that some RM15 million had already been handed to the federation while another

RM7.5 million will be channeled to FAM soon. The matter was brought up during the exco meeting and FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah revealed the members, had in principle, agreed that referees will receive a 50 per cent increase in their allowances. Referees will also be paid

KUALA LUMPUR: FOOTBALL

Further incentive for duo

WHEN Malaysia take on Liverpool tomorrow, two key individuals in the national team set-up will have an added spirit do to their best. The duo are none other than national coach Datuk K. Rajagobal and captain Safiq Rahim, who are both ardent supporters of Liverpool's rivals, Manchester United. While Safiq admitted having the urge to play his heart out, the national coach only brushed away the question with a smile. However, Rajagobal did say, as a coach, he must consider the team's long term benefit. "What is import a n t is the match against Singa-

pore (World Cup qualifier). This match (Liverpool) gives me another chance to tinker with my players and make the necessary amendments," said Rajagopal. "We were outplayed by Arsenal on Wednesday but hopefully, the players have learnt something from that match." Safiq added that the team cannot afford to make silly mistakes. "No doubt we cannot challenge them physically but on our part we must play well and not make mistakes," said the skipper. According to Safiq, he learnt a lot, notably one touch short passing football, from playing Arsenal and is looking forward to learning more when he takes the field against Liverpool.

Safiq echoed the same tune as his manager, stating that what is most important in the tour of Arsenal and Liverpool is the experience gained before playing Singapore. Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Kenny Daglish is looking forward to a good workout for his boys as they prepare for the upcoming English Premier League season. "There will be mistakes from the players as they have just got back from a month's break," said the Liverpool legend. Malaysia entertain Liverpool at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow (kick-off at 5.45pm).

HISTORIC MEETING: Rajagobal (left) and Kenny Dalglish answer some questions from the Press — Pic: RAZAK GHAZALI

in advance starting from the Malaysia Cup this year. FAM's referees committee chairman Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz assured the referees everything will be sorted soon. This assurance was made after the exco meeting at Wisma FAM. "We will surely settle all their dues in no time," said Astaman.

Aliff making all the right moves ALIFF HAIQAL LOQMAN HAKIM LAU (pic) could be a star in the making for Malaysian football — if he is nurtured along the right path. The 11-year-old is already showing a lot of promise, having participated and performed at various Under-12 competitions. In the Royal Selangor Club International Soccer 7s, Haiqal was the star performer for CIMB YFA as they won their third consecutive title. It was Haiqal's goals that took them to the final. Haiqal also won the Best Player award all those years. "I want to represent Malaysia someday. It's a long journey considering my age but god-willing, I will make it as a professional player," said Haiqal. Haiqal is thankful to his dad, Lokman Hakim Lau Abdullah for the player he is.

"When I was small, he used to take me to the field when he came back from work." The SK Jalan Empat, Bandar Baru Bangi student plays as a striker, the position of his idols Mokhtar Dahari and Safee Sali. Haiqal has been playing for CIMB YFA for three years since his dad found the academy on the Internet. He had reason to cheer despite losing to PKNS Academy 4-3 at the 1Malaysia Cardiff City tournament. Haiqal was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. According to his dad, Haiqal had shown potential even as a baby. He could kick the ball straight when he was only 3. "I saw that as a potential as not many can do that at such a young age," said Lokman. "I gave him the basic techniques. Now he is enjoying his football."

PETALING JAYA

Gunners fan remembers the good old days

"I ENJOYED everything while it lasted." Those where the words echoed by S. Kathiravale, the man who officiated Arsenal's first visit to Malaysia some 36 years ago. Yesterday, he recalled to Mailsport what it was like to be the man in black when his idols from London lost to Malaysia 2-0 in 1975. "Being an Arsenal supporter, I was excited when I was asked to officiate the match," said Kathiravale. That was the one and only time he watched Arsenal play live in action. When Arsenal played Malaysia a couple of nights back, Kathiravale was nowhere to be seen and it was learnt he was not invited by any party to watch the game. However, having been in the game for 48 years, first as a linesmen in local tournaments, the 82-year-old doesn't really watch football these days. Kathiravale feels it's probably because he was involved in the game for a very long time. When he stopped blowing

his whistle in 1980, Kathiravale had already officiated 33 international matches. That number also significantly sprang up often in life – 33 years as a teacher, 33 countries visited on official business and 33-years-old when he got married. When he finally called it quits in football in 2006, serving the FA of Malaysia in various posi-

tions in the referee committee, the Seremban-born man was already a star in his own ways. Various articles had been written on him since his officiating days. Kathiravale also served as hockey umpire for 42 years, starting off as a ball boy before becoming the 2002 Razak Cup tournament director.

Bjorn again

SANDWICH: GOLF/ BRITISH OPEN

Emotional Dane grabs first round lead A

TEARFUL Thomas Bjorn (pic) returned to the scene of his former heartbreak this morning to grab the first round lead in the British Open which he shares with 20-year-old English amateur Tom Lewis. On a day when patchy rain and stiff sea breezes early on allowed Royal St George's to bear its teeth at the 156-strong field, the 41-year-old Dane seized the lead with a five-under 65 that included seven birdies. That stood firm for most of a marathon day before the unheralded Lewis made his move in the early evening when conditions were considerably better. One stroke back from that pair was 47-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, along with two Americans, 2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover and Open debutant Webb Simpson. Tournament favourite Rory McIlroy, the newly-crowned US Open champion, ended a three-week break by bogeying two of his first three holes, only to steady the ship and fire a oneover 71. That was also where the top two ranking players in the world, English pair Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, ended the day, while top American hope Phil Mickelson, at 41, was just ahead of them at level par.

But it was Bjorn who provided the day's most heart-warming story. He was last seen at this rugged old course on the east Kent coastal stretch eight years ago when he headed for home heartbroken after blowing a golden chance to win the most glittering prize in golf. Leading by three with four holes to play, Bjorn took three to get out of a greenside bunker at the 16th and then bogeyed the next as unknown American Ben Curtis swooped in to steal the Auld Claret Jug from under the Dane's nose. Just a week ago, it looked like he would not even be playing this time around as, struggling for form, he had failed to qualify and was just sixth reserve for the event. But in an unusual turn of events, the door creaked open for him as first Tiger Woods and then Thomas Levet, Tim Clark, David Toms and finally Vijay Singh pulled out. The former Ryder Cup player would still have been left on the sidelines but for the fact that first alternate, Brendan Jones, turned down the chance to play because his wife was expecting. Bjorn's round was fired by four birdies in five holes from the 12th, including ironically one at the fateful 16th. "I came down here on Monday night (as first reserve) and Tuesday wasn't the greatest of days," he said of his brief preparations for the tournament. "You don't really know what you are doing. "But when I got in (Vijay withdrawal) Monday night it gave me a couple of days to prepare and I just kind of promised myself to try and enjoy it." — AFP

FRANKFURT: FOOTBALL/ WOMEN'S WORLD CUP

No bonus, but a watch would do, says Japan coach WITH Japan set to face two-time winners the USA in Sunday's women's World Cup final, coach Norio Sasaki (pic) said his team cannot expect a bumper bonus if they win but maybe a watch instead. Despite their nickname Nadeshiko — a pink flower symbolising grace and beauty — the Japanese are the giant-killers of Germany 2011 having beaten the hosts in the quarterfinals and Sweden in the last four. They are in a World Cup final for the first time in their history and take on a buoyant USA team which brushed aside France 3-1 in their semifinal yesterday. While hosts Germany would have received a bonus of €60,000 (RM254,000) if they had won a third straight title, Sasaki said his Japanese cannot expect the same financial reward if they lift the Cup. Having conceded an early goal to Sweden in the semifinal, Japan roared back to dominate the Scandinavians with a 3-1 victory.

But Sasaki said Junji Ogura, the president of the Japan Football Association, has the final say on whether the Nadeshiko's heroic exploits at Germany 2011 will be rewarded. "The president was there and I would have to ask him. For us it's not about money, it's about being part of this World Cup," Sasaki replied, when asked by a German journalist if his team would get the same bonus the Germans were offered. "We haven't talked about money, but now we have reached the final, a watch would be a nice thing, that is what I would expect. "The president may think about that, we will not however get what they would have got in Germany." — AFP

Argentina coach Batista should give tough defender chance to play Uruguay HOLA! Hosts Argentina face this tricky task against traditional rivals and neighbours Uruguay for a place in the semifinals of the Copa America at Brigadier Gr a l E st an i sl a o L op e z , also known as "Elephant's Graveyard", in Santa Fe on Sunday (6.15am). This is THE clash of the quarterfinals as one of the world's oldest football rivals battle against each other. Latin football lovers, especially, don't want to miss this one. Get ready that strong Colombian coffee to stay awake and watch the match right until the end. Neither team would want to lose El clasico del Rio de la Plata (River Plate). There is so much history in it. Then whoever wins this will have that chance of winning a record 15th title in the oldest active international football competition. These two have met more than 170 times over a century and the last was a tense World Cup qualifier in Montevideo in October, 2009 won 1-0 by Argentina, who were under the legendary Diego Maradona. The encouraging factor for Argentina, led by wizard Lionel Messi, is that they seem to have found the magic which has made them one of the favourites together with champions Brazil this time — based on that convincing 3-0 win over Costa Rica in their Group A match. Argentina should have won by a bigger margin if not for the missed opportunities by Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain. The attacking unit led by Messi, Sergio "Kun" Aguero and Angel Di Maria were superb in creating havoc to the compact Costa Rican

defence. So the attacking aspect is not going to be a worrying factor for Argentina fans, for now. The team have an awesome strikeforce with the assist of the in-form Fernando Gago from midfield. Nevermind the fact that Uruguay have a solid defence to deal with. It is the heart of the defence which is worrying the fans. Nicolas Burdisso and Gabriel Milito of Roma and Barcelona respectively are lacking in pace as evident in the 0-0 draw with Colombia in a group match last week. The Colombians, led by prolific striker Radamel Falcao, should have won this one if not for a couple of missed opportunities and a couple of good saves from Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who plays for Dutch club AZ. Both Burdisso and Milito are 30. However, Burdisso has a plus factor as he is also handy when moving up for setpieces as he possesses strong headers. Milito, who does not command a regular place even with Barca, is the weakest link of the team. And he is set to be pressured by the deadly Uruguay strikeforce led by Liverpool's ace Luis Suarez, veteran Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani. It will be a trying time for Milito. To be fair to coach Sergio Batista, Argentina are suffering from a dearth of quality

centrebacks in the mould of legends and commanding figures like Daniel Passarella and Roberto Ayala. But still in the current squad, he has this talent in former Real Madrid man Ezequiel Garay, who is now with Benfica. The solid 24-year-old is also capable of getting the goals in set-pieces — just like Burdisso. The only problem with Garay may be his lack of experience but Batista should be brave enough to try him out against the Uruguayans especially if Milito starts to struggle. After all, he has been playing in Europe for quite some time now as he signed up with Spanish club Racing Santander in 2005. Garay was part of the Argentine team who won the Under-20 World Cup in Rotterdam that year. And in the squad then were "three amigoes" Messi, Aguero and Gago. Obviously, the 6'2" tall Garay would love to play alongside this trio in such a big match like this and make life difficult for Suarez and company. It is going to be a tight match which may go into extra-time and penalty shootout. But El Loco feels Argentina still have that slight edge. Messi will hold the key yet again for the hosts. Oh yes...this is something different. Have you been watching the on-going Women's World Cup in Germany where Japan have made the final for the first

time and will take on former champions and highly-determined the United States? If you notice...here comes the Latin part of it, the Japanese seem to have this playing style almost similar to Barcelona. They are patient in their approach, executing short passes with confidence before going for the kill, among others. Interesting. But there is nothing much L atin about this. BRAZIL'S latest sensation Neymar is delighted with his contribution in the 4-2 win over Ecuador in their final Group B match in Cordoba yesterday — saying his brace was a demonstration of what he has been doing for his club Santos over the past two years. The striker, 19, scored his first two competitive goals for Brazil as they cut loose in the second-half, sharing the plaudits with fellow scorer Alexandre Pato of AC Milan. He was on top of the world after the match as he celebrated qualification to the quarterfinals as group winners. "I played today (yesterday) with a lot of calm, I played my own game. I managed to get on top of them and scored two goals," he said. "I have always done that for Santos, and today (yesterday) I was able to do it for Brazil as well. It feels good." Neymar's club mate in attacking midfielder Ganso also turned in an impressive display, and the 21-year-old believes there is still more to come from the holders. "I am pleased to be able to help the Selecao. The team have improved, and will keep

improving from here. I played well and hope to carry on getting better, to help my side." Brazil will meet Paraguay in La Plata for a place in the last four in La Plata on Monday (3am). The two teams earlier drew 2-2 in a group match. Pato is also pleased with Brazil's improvement against Ecuador. He praised the attitude of his teammates after a difficult start to the tournament, and admitted a win was crucial yesterday. "It was the match that we were all hoping for. It was crucial for us, we had to win no matter what. We went looking for a good result and we found it," he said. "We qualified and in first place, it was what we wanted. Now it is time to work and forget all that happened. A new Copa America begins." Pato also highlighted the team spirit inside the camp, and marked it as a decisive factor in the win. "Here when you win, everybody wins and when you lose, everyone loses. It was an excellent game by the whole team, they all gave something extra and this enabled the 4-2 victory and a great game," he said.

Don't underestimate Paraguay, says Julio Cesar BRAZIL goalkeeper Julio Cesar is aware their quarterfinal clash against Paraguay on Monday (3am) will not be an easy game for the champions. The Brazilians qualified for this stage by beating Ecuador 4-2 yesterday in their final Group A match and will now meet the Paraguayans for the second time in the tournament. The teams drew 2-2 in the group stage. "We cannot relax. It is true that today (yesterday) Paraguay had a slightly weaker performance than they expected in the 3-3 draw against Venezuela, but they can improve," said Julio Cesar. The Inter Milan goalkeeper

went on to express his satisfaction with the win over Ecuador, although he confessed he was not pleased with his individual performance. "We knew it was a decisive match and I think the attitude from the squad was really important. It is good for the psychological aspect, because us, the more experienced players, are used to playing these kind of matches. It was good to walk out with a win," said Julio Cesar. "There are things that I can improve. The second goal was a bit harder than the first, but in both strikes I chose the wrong technical resource and did not have time to make the save."

Angry 'Arry remains defiant SPURS manager Harry Redknapp (pic) has urged wantaway midfielder Luka Modric to forget any desire for a transfer and get on with preparing for the new season. The Croatian international has courted controversy by attempting to force Spurs into selling him to their rivals but Redknapp, who is holding firm over keeping his star man despite Chelsea's £27m offer, expects Modric not to rock the boat. Modric had previously stated he would not hand in an official transfer request, despite expressing his desire to join Chelsea. But amid rumours he has now done so, through his agent, Redknapp dismissed the reports as 'unimportant'. "We know he wants to leave whether he writes it down on a piece of paper doesn't really make any difference to our stance," he told the BBC. "He's a great player and we don't want to lose him."

Sneijder, United agree terms

But Fergie denies any interest in Dutch maestro MANCHESTER UNITED chief executive David Gill is believed to have agreed terms with representatives of Inter Milan and Holland star Wesley Sneijder (pic). United owners the Glazers have sanctioned the £35m (RM169.3m) fee for the 27-year-old, widely seen as a replacement for Paul Scholes, who retired at the end of last season. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson's significant transfer spending so far is also proof of his desire to keep United ahead of the pack next term, and maintain their success on the back of last season's title triumph. However, Fergie has come out to deny any interest in Sneijder, according to Britain's Press Association. Ferguson has been reading reports the Dutch star has

agreed terms, but the United boss claims there is no truth in the rumours. "I keep reading about this, there's absolutely nothing at all to that (reports of United's interest in the player)," he told ESPN Soccernet Press Pass. First of all I don't think Inter are prepared to sell him anyway." "You get conjecture and you get speculation every week in newspapers unfortunately. And we have to answer these for some reason. Why, I don't know, but we have to find a reason without adding insult to any particular club, or embarrassing any particular player. "There's nothing we can do about it." Gill was in Zurich yesterday to attend a scheduled meeting of the European Club Association meeting

in Zurich yesterday, which would have provided an opportunity to speak with Inter about the possibility of recruiting Sneijder. It is understood Gill made clear United's willingness to pay £35m for Sneijder, with an official bid expected to be lodged within the next 48 hours. Although Inter appeared reluctant to sell, they have accepted they cannot turn down such a lucrative bid and are ready to accept the offer. Sneijder is said to have agreed wages of £190,000-a-week at Old

Roma will thrill like Barca, says coach Luis Enrique

AS ROMA will start a new era by playing the "Barcelona brand" of football, the Serie A club's new coach Luis Enrique told reporters at his official presentation this morning. The Spaniard, who previously coached Barcelona B before taking over from Vincenzo Montel l a l ast month, said his focus was to build a young side at the Italian club built on "values". "When I spoke to the directors during contract negotiations, they told me the idea was to have an attractive side," he told reporters. "We'll see after a few months if we've achieved this but I don't know another way of playing." The former Real Madrid and Barcelona player, whose hand-picked backroom staff includes former teammate

and Lazio player Ivan de la Pena, shunned comparisons with Barca coach "Pep" Guardiola despite admitting the n e w Roma would be built close to the image of Barcelona. "Guardiola is one of the best coaches in the world," he said. "He coaches close to the players — almost on the pitch. I'm just starting my career at Roma and am very far from his achievements. "My own style is like Barcelona's but not exactly the same. I can't play 4-3-3 if players can't pass the ball but Roma players can. I want us to keep the ball so our opponents suffer. That seems like

Barcelona but it's not quite the same." Technical ‘farce’ ends

FORMULA 1 brought its technical and tetchy civil war to an end this morning with former champion Austrian Niki Lauda declaring the episode as the “biggest farce ever” in the sport’s history and few teams happy with the outcome. Lauda, as outspoken now as a media commentator as he was brave as a driver, made clear that he had feared a tighter clampdown on the rules surrounding “off-throttle blown exhaust fumes” would be seen as a move to restrict champions Red Bull’s performance advantage. In turn, any move to restrict Red Bull — following their hugely successful runaway start in the drivers and constructors championships — could be seen as a bid to help Ferrari, a scenario he told N-TV “would be the greatest insolence”. But a statement by the sport’s ruling body, the International Motoring Federation (FIA) this morning ended the arguments which had included a public row between the McLaren and Red Bull team chiefs at Silverstone during the British Grand Prix last weekend. There each made accusations and counter-accusations about their respective teams’ use of systems designed to make use of exhaust fumes to enhance down-force, and the rear grip and performance of their cars. “It was the biggest farce ever,” said Lauda, of the Silverstone quarrels. “But then suddenly the FIA and (race director and technical delegate) Charlie Whiting had the idea to change the rules in the middle of the season. I personally don’t understand it. “I very much hope that this absurdity stops now and that we and the crowd know at the Nuerburgring (the venue for the next race) exactly what the rules are.” It was as if by magic that the complaints of Lauda, 62, and many others, were answered with the FIA statement making clear that the Silverstone episode is now history and that for the rest of this year the rules will remain those that were used at the European Grand Prix at Valencia in Spain three weeks ago. — AFP

Mikel working harder as Chelsea gun all titles at stake By MUSTAPHA KAMARUDDIN moose@mmail.com.my NO HOLDS BARRED: Mikel says Chelsea will try to win everything next season — GETTYpic

CHELSEA, under new manager Andre VillasBoas, are on fire as they prepare for the new season. The Blues, after the disappointment of losing the English Premier League title to Manchester United last season, are leaving no stones unturned to be up there yet again. Not only that, they are also eyeing every title at stake including the elusive Champions League. So says defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel, who will be in the team for a pre-season playing tour of Asia where they will also play a Malaysian Selection on Thursday at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. “As usual, we are aiming high,” said Mikel in a telephone interview from Chelsea’s training centre at Cobham yesterday. “Be it the league, FA Cup or Champions League, we will try to win everything and we are working hard. We hope to get the desired results. We

will see what happens.” However, the Nigeria international, 24, admitted it was going to be tough as the other big guns like United, Manchester City and Arsenal are also preparing well for the challenge. What about Liverpool, who had a dismal outing last season? “Liverpool will be there as well. They have signed some real quality and good players to beef up the squad. They are moving in the right direction under Kenny Dalglish,” said Mikel. The Chelsea squad for the Asian tour will be without two other established defensive midfielders in Michael Essien and Ramires. Essien has been ruled out for six months because of a knee injury while Ramires is now with the Brazilian national team who have made the quarterfinals of the Copa America in Argentina. Mikel described Essien’s misfortune as a big blow to Chelsea. “He is a fantastic and experienced player. It is too bad that he will now miss pre-season training and the first part of the

new season. We will surely miss him.” With Essien’s long term absence, Mikel may now have to shoulder that extra burden with Ramires. But first, he has this fight on hand to be a regular under Portuguese and former Porto manager VillasBoas as there are several upcoming players who are fighting for regular places as well. “I will continue to do my job and improve myself,” said Mikel. Mikel describes the Asian tour as handy for Chelsea as they prepare for their assault in the new season. “The tour will give good opportunities to try new things introduced by the new manager. For instance, things we do in training are different now. This is also the case of the mentality of the players. “It’s different working under Villas-Boas. And we are working hard to make things happening for the club,” said Mikel, who was part of the Chelsea squad who toured Malaysia in 2008. “Then the experience of training and playing in Asia will always be good for the players.”
