MAIL says

Rethinking the news

We'll be back with a new look, new content and new energy WHEN we announced a little over two months ago that The Malay Mail was going to go through another transformation, we were not short of critics and nay-sayers. But they cannot be blamed for their doubts, as this newspaper had undergone more than its fair share of rapid changes over the years. However, on the flip side of the coin, the reaction from both readers and advertisers have been enthusiastic, with high expectations for another chapter in the history of this 115-year-old institution. These supporters, like us, believe that the only consistency in life is change and to be resistant to it is to oppose progress and improvement.

After all, wasn’t it Winston Churchill who said “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often”? With this in mind, we would like to inform our dear readers and valued supporters that The Malay Mail will temporarily cease publication from tomorrow. We will be back in January 2012 as a nationwide morning paper with a cover price of RM1. We feel this is a small token our readers would not mind contributing as it will go a little way to help this paper deliver all the news that matters to a larger audience. This includes more comprehensive coverage of national, foreign, business, lifestyle, entertainment and

national

sports news and wider coverage of community news as well as the award-winning Hotline service that has become synonymous with The Malay Mail. More importantly, loyal readers of The Malay Mail can continue to expect the kind of investigative reports and exposes that the newspaper had long built its credibility on. With this latest move, we hope to broaden our approach from being The Paper That Cares to a paper that caters to a more demanding and sophisticated readership by providing in-depth reports and alternative views that challenge current norms. In other words, we are rethinking the news. This is crucial in our current landscape of a

more cynical public who seldom take anything at face value. In this respect, we are forming strategic partnerships with content providers both local and abroad, as well as with high-profile, articulate and respected columnists who will help fill a void that some feel is missing in the mainstream media. To readers who have had issues with this paper’s availability, a paid model will mean that there will be a better chance to lay your hands on a copy of your new-and-improved "friendly neighbourhood" newspaper. Or to save you the trouble, we encourage home subscriptions, which is expected to grow now that we are going morning.

What does this mean to advertisers? The transformation in editorial content and direction as well as a transition from a free to paid model will help better determine our readership profile and consequentially, offer advertisers a focused market audience. While we go off print for the next few weeks so as to work on getting the new product off the ground, we will maintain a web presence. Our website www. mmail.com.my will continue to provide up-to-date news of the day. We thank you for your continued support of The Malay Mail. We hope — rather, we know — that upon our return in the new year, you will realise that it was well worth the wait.

Safe food watch

It is Health Ministry's SOP to have constant checks for contamination, says minister HEALTH MINISTER Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai refutes claims that no checks are made on Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia stores and repeats his call for DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua to show proof of contaminated foodstuff at the outlet chain. "We are always conducting checks. It is a standard operation procedure by the ministry," said Liow after officiating the 3rd Asia-Pacific Conference on Public Health yesterday. "Our food safety division is constantly inspecting outlets or food manufacturers to ensure food safety is not compromised. "Food safety is something we view very seriously and we advise anyone who come

across products not up to food safety guidelines to report to the ministry for immediate action." When asked if Pua had submitted findings of two certified laboratories claiming to have detected Escherichia coli or E. coli, a bacteria that causes serious food poisoning, in fresh milk sold at Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia, the minister said the former has yet to do so. "We are still waiting for him to submit it to the ministry. Please do so as we are equally concerned and we want to check further." On Friday, Pua claimed the lab tests also showed a higher

Standard maid deal

MALAYSIA is in talks with several neighbouring countries, including Cambodia, to reach an accord on standardised contracts for foreign domestic helpers, similar to one signed recently with Indonesia. Human Resources Minister D atu k S. Subramani am revealed yesterday efforts are underway to reach an understanding that could lift a temporary ban by Cambodian government imposed on its women from coming to Malaysia as domestic workers after an alleged increase in abuse cases involving Cambodian maids here. "We are now trying to reach similar agreements with all countries which send domestic workers to Malaysia, like the MoU we signed with Indonesia. "A standardised contract will be handed to such maids whereby they will be accorded one mandatory day off per week, and they will be allowed to keep their passports themselves," he said after officiating the Access to Justice for Migrant Workers conference at a hotel here. The Malay Mail last week highlighted Cambodian parliamentarian Mu Sochua's call for Malaysia to hand out standardised contracts to all

of its foreign domestic workers, so that the ban placed by the Cambodian government last Oct 15 could be lifted within three months. The Cambodian government, according to her, wants their maids be given a mandatory day off each week, have a limit of eight working hours per day, and also for recruitment agencies not to deduct fees from the maids' salaries. Regional non-governmental organisation CARAM Asia Bhd, which organised the conference officiated by Subramaniam, in its report revealed that out of 150 cases of migrant workers who were abused that it had documented up to this month, 116 cases had taken place in

Malaysia. "Migrant workers should no be seen as a mere commodity but as humans with entitled to equal rights and dignity," said CARAM Asia's regional co-ordinator Harun Al Rashid. Subramaniam, however, said that Malaysian law affords the same protection to migrant workers that also applies to local citizens. "Be it in terms of salary or working conditions, our law affords the same protection for locals and foreigners." "However, many foreigners do not make what we call as informed decisions. "They are not provided adequate information by their agencies about the country they are going to or about their rights. If they are aware of all this, they could report their cases to the police here and the police would treat the cases the same way it would for a local citizen." Subramaniam said there are currently around 1.3 million illegal workers in Malaysia. "With the new biometric identification system to be introduced soon, we expect to trace the history of all foreigners who enter and depart the country. "That way, we will have better documentation and means to identify illegal workers in Malaysia."

pleased with it. "It is good of them to conduct checks. "Of course, it should do it as the ministry has the authority to enforce such checks. It is

their job to do so anyway and not up to other agencies or ministries or even the police." Yesterday, The Malay Mail reported Pua as saying he would cooperate with the ministry by providing them the lab findings, adding it should be more proactive in handling the matter. He was responding to Liow's request for the lab findings to be submitted to the ministry to help in investigations. Last Friday, Pua also claimed nine other products offered by the outlet chain — bottled oyster sauce, pineapple jam, ice-cream, condensed milk, canned milk creamer, canned ghee, canned sardine and canned curry chicken — fell short of the standards of the Food and Regulations Acts.

Police record Marina's 'sexuality' statement

POLICE have taken a statement from Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir related to her support of the Seksualiti Merdeka 2011. Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah said Marina was called to the Jalan Traver police headquarters last Friday. "She was accompanied by members of Sisters in Islam." Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, when contacted, said police have wrapped up investigations into the matter and submitted the papers to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further action.

By THASHA JAYAMANOGARAN thasha@mmail.com.my

Seksualiti Merdeka 2011 was organised by a coalition of NGOs, artistes, activists and individuals to "celebrate the human rights of people of diverse sexual orientation”. It had been held annually since 2008 and was supposed to host a series of activities until Nov 13 at the Central Market in Kuala Lumpur. Last week, it was reported Marina, who launched the event in 2009, said she was upset with unfair reporting by certain quarters, portraying the event as a "free sex fest".

Big jump ahead for lifelong learning By Azril Annuar azrilannuar@mmail.com.my

THE number of 15-year-olds and above taking up lifelong learning (LLL) is expected to rise by 50 per cent by 2020, according to the Lifelong Learning Enculturation Master Plan 2011-2020 launched by the Higher Education Ministry yesterday. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Education Minister, said LLL participation could increase from 10 per cent to 50 per cent, should Malaysia engage several strategies in the master plan. They are the enhancement of LLL mechanism and infrastructure, increasing public awareness and participation, ensuring continuity and appreciation of LLL as well as providing adequate funds and incentives to support related programmes. “The LLL masterplan, at a national level, will place the LLL agenda as the third pillar in developing human capital, following basic education (secondary and primary) and tertiary education,” said Muhyiddin. He said even developed nations in the region, such as Japan, Singapore and South Korea, which have successfully retained their human capital, are still organising training programmes to ensure relevancy of their human capital base. "In this context, the national education system will continue to change and improve so that we may develop human capital relevant to industrial needs. I believe our higher education system will be able to produce successful and talented human capital with critical and creative mindset capable to compete in the decades to come, as leaders and entrepreneurs." He said the acknowledgement and accreditation of LLL programmes by relevant institutions of higher learning will also play a vital role in ensuring its success. The ministry's Vocational Training Council will be responsible for coordinating and providing accredited certificates to students and ensure those who do well will be able to qualify for further studies or receive higher salaries.

Protest threat over feedlot row

PKR Wanita wants minister to come clean in National Feedlot controversy OWN up or face a nationwide protest. Parti Keadilan Rakyat's (PKR) women's wing issued the ultimatum to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Jalil over by her family-run National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd' (NFC) alleged fund mismanagement. PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin (pic) said they were giving Shahrizat a week to take responsibility over the issue. She said the party will lodge reports with the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission if the minister, who is also Umno Wanita chief, failed to respond within the period and urged her to resign from her posts. " Sh a h r i z at s h ou l d b e accountable for the mismanagement of funds at NFC and set an example by being the first to resign,” said the Ampang MP at a Press conference at the Parliament lobby yesterday. Zuraida also lambasted Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar who reportedly said NFC was a private company and had nothing to do with the government. She said the government, through the Finance Ministry, has a "golden share" in NFC, as confirmed by the Companies Commission of Malaysia. "Noh's statement is clearly

an attempt to wash his hands off the numerous mismanagement occurring at NFC." The Auditor-General’s 2011 Report had noted NFC's cattle farming project produced only 3,289 heads of cattle last year or 41.1 per cent of the target set. Another controversy surfaced last week when PRK secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution claimed the NFC used its funds to buy a RM9.8 million condominium at One Menerung in Bangsar. He alleged the sum was part of RM83 million given by the NFC to the National Meat and Livestocks Corporation Sdn Bhd (NMLC), a subsidiary contracted as NFC’s marketing development agent. Last Friday, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the residential unit was bought as an “investment” for NFC when the NMLC found itself with excess funds. Both the NFC and NLMC are owned and ran by Shahrizat's husband and their three children. NFC executive chairman is husband Datuk Dr Mohamad Salleh Ismail, while their children, Izmir, 31, Izran, 27, and Izzana, 25, are its chief executive and executive direc-

tors, respectively. PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli, who was also at the Press conference, said it does not make sense for NFC to invest in a luxury condo when the market value for luxury real estate properties are depreciating. "If indeed NFC wanted to invest to get best returns, buying a luxurious condo worth RM9.8 billion is a wrong investment decision as the property market, especially for luxury condos, is expected to go down from 2010 onwards, continuing well into the coming couple of years." Rafizi challenged Khairy to an open debate “anywhere and anytime” to settle the matter once and for all. PAS central working committee member Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, who is Kuala Selangor MP, said all spendings on NFC or NMLC should be temporarily frozen until clear answers are revealed. He said an independent third party auditor should take up the task to get the answers. Last week, Shahrizat said the accusations were a political conspiracy by the Opposition to undermine her leadership and destroy Wanita Umno, adding her family did not deserve to have such allegations hurled at them.

Excelling in robotics MALAYSIA should focus on carving a name for itself in robotics, says Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong. He pointed out response from primary and secondary schools in this field was overwhelming as shown in the National Robotics Competition (NRC) 2011. He said over 2,900 teams took part, of which 16, have been picked for the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) in Abu Dhabi on Nov 18 to 20. Dr Wee said they are among

the 400-plus teams from 38 competing countries. "Our students show a high level of creativity and they know how to programme the robots," he said before handing over the Jalur Gemilang to the national team led by the ministry's co-curriculum director-general, Mohd Rosli Mohd Hassan, at Parliament yesterday. Wee said it is important to show the world Malaysian students' talent in robotics and their exposure in the field, adding next year, Malaysia will

host the event. Meanwhile, he said most schools have already started distributing the RM100 aid promised for students in the 2012 Budget. He said school heads are working with police when withdrawing money from banks where they will be given escorts. "We will not disclose where and when the school heads will withdraw the money for fear of being targeted by robbers," he said, adding the money will be disbursed soon.

Govt to help train war journos THE government is ready to assist the media in providing safety training for journalists, photographers and cameramen covering strife-torn countries, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday. Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister, Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum (pic), said media organisations should also institute standard operating procedures for its employees to handle such assignments safely.

Media organisations should also provide safety equipment, like vests, helmets, life jackets, gas masks and camping gears, he said when responding to a question from Charles Anthony Santiago (DAP-Klang). Salang said the training would not be made compulsory but media practitioners would be encouraged to join so that they would be better prepared and minimise risks when covering dangerous areas.

Mystery of 11.11.11 After police arrest man at 11pm, seize 11 live bullets

THE date 11.11.11 was auspicious to many, but even more for the South Klang police. This was because at 11pm that day, they apprehended a man who has no less than six criminal records, including one for murder in 2000 at Port Klang. South Klang district police chief ACP Muhammad Mat Yusop, said the 36-year-old ship cleaner, based at the port, was arrested during a two-hour "Ops Lejang Bersepadu" police roadblock at Jalan Tengku Badar traffic light inter-section in Port Klang. "During the blockade, police confronted a man on a Modenas Kriss motorcycle behaving suspiciously and trying to evade the roadblock," he said. He said police tried to detain the man after they introduced themselves, but

the man sped off. "We chased him for 200 metres until Lorong Seroja where he crashed his motorcycle. The suspect abandoned the bike and fled on foot," said Muhammad. While running, the suspect threw an object from his waistband into a drain. The suspect was later caught. On searching the drain, police found a Colt .38 revolver. "At the suspect's house at Jalan Seroja, off Jalan Tengku Badar, we retrieved 11 live bullets and a wallet containing a police badge," said Muhammad. During his arrest, the suspect tried to mislead the cops by stating his brother's name and MyKad number as his own but police later traced his identity.

Initial investigations showed the woman, attired in a gown, had a bruise on her head and believed to be in her 30s.

END OF THE ROAD: Chief Inspector Lim Jaw Shyong taking a closer look at the get-away bike

"A background check showed he had six previous criminal convictions and was on the police wanted list for a Port Klang murder in 2000 and a drug-trafficking case in Lukut, Negri Sembilan in

2002," said Muhammad. He also had three cases of causing hurt by dangerous weapons and was detained in Simpang Renggam under the Emergency Ordinance.

Police believe he might also be a secret society member. The suspect has been remanded until Saturday for investigation under Firearms Act (Increased Penalty) 1971 and Arms Act 1960. Meanwhile, from Nov 1 to Sunday the South Klang police conducted Ops Lejang Bersepadu to curb vehicle theft cases, especially motorcycles. During the operation, 13 stolen motorcycles including Modenas Kriss, Honda EX5, Yamaha 125Z and the old Honda C70, all worth RM52,000, were recovered, with the arrest of 21 people aged between 14 to 41. From the total, 12 were students, four of whom were due to sit for their SPM examinations. From these arrests, police solved 38 motorcycle theft cases in Klang district.

M-cyclist in 60km high speed chase WHEN a motorcyclist made an illegal U-turn to evade a roadblock along Jalan Raja Laut on Sunday night, a KL traffic policeman on a motorcycle swung into action. Little did he know a high speed chase would follow taking him on a 60km ride from the city centre to the Karak Highway. Throughout the chase, the motorcyclist performed daring stunts on his motorcycle to taunt the pursuing cop. KL traffic police enforcement unit chief ASP Azmi Wahid said the traffic policeman eventually recovered the motorcycle, abandoned next to a petrol station along the highway. He said checks revealed the motorcycle was reported stolen a few months ago.

The suspect had apparently covered the registration number with a sticker tape to avoid detection. “We identified the stolen machine after removing the sticker,” he said. Azmi said ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’, which began two months ago, has seen an increase of cars and motorcycles using fake registration number plates. “There were many cases of false registration number plates that we identified when we registered summonses. During the three-hour operation between 7pm to 10pm on Sunday, Azmi said the team screened a total of 240 motorcycles.

Special care for on-going 6P exercise THE on-going 6P exercise gets special attention from the Home Ministry to avoid issues which could be played up by the Opposition. In stating this, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein said the ministry was scrutinising the process to ensure all aspects of the exercise was running smoothly. “We want to avoid controversy which could be capitalised by the opposition, as seen in cases of foreign nationals in Peninsular Malaysia, the alleged offer of citizenshipa to Bangladeshi nationals, and others,” said Hishamuddin after officiating at the Police Commissioner, Police Chief, Commander and Commandant Conference at Maktab PDRM in Cheras yesterday. He described the status of the exercise that ends on Jan 10, as “satisfactory”. He was, however, unable to provide figures on the number of employers and foreign workers processed under the plan so far. “The response from immigrants on the programme has been convincing and unexpected. During the first stage of the programme, which is the 1P stage (registration), there were 2.3 million immigrants, including illegals, who registered through the biometric registration system,” said Hishamuddin. He said the programme entered the second stage, called 2P (legalisation) when immigrants will be registered. The data is needed for job-matching for the service sectors requiring labour. On allegations that Malaysia was becoming a drug-manufacturing hub, following the discovery of a RM20 million syabu and Ecstacy drug processing plant in Alor Setar which led to the arrests of 11 suspects, including a Dutch national member of the syndicate, on Sunday, Hishamuddin said the development and action by police to bust the syndicate must be viewed positively.

Curtains fall on Istana Negara It gives way to the new Istana Negara in Jalan Duta as the official residence of future Kings

AFTER a colourful 83-year history and witnessing the coronation of seven of the 13 Yang diPertuan Agong, the curtains will fall on Istana Negara tomorrow. The majestic white edifice with gold-coloured domes, a familiar sight to motorists passing Jalan Syed Putra, will be officially decommissioned when the flag of the head of state is lowered for the last time in a traditional ceremony today. At the same time, the new Istana Negara in Jalan Duta becomes the official residence or palace for Malaysia's future head of states. The out-going Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, will go down in history as the last ruler to occupy the old palace, which was also where prime ministers, Cabinet ministers and chief justices took their

oath of office. This was also the palace where Malaysian senior diplomats received their appointment letters to serve overseas and where foreign diplomats were received. Thousands of Malaysians also shared their life's memorable moments at the palace when they received their honourary awards and titles. Located on 11.3ha land on Bukit Petaling, the palace started of as the mansion of a wealthy Chinese businessman Chan Wing. Built in 1928, its architecture was the work of the then leading British architectural firm Swan & McLaren. Chan Wing is said to have lived with his family there until World War II when the Japanese army occupied the place. However, after the Japanese

By the youth, for the youth FLASHBACK: Participants at last year's camp in Pulau Pangkor

HOW about getting your children involved in an activity camp for them to mingle with other kids from other cultures and learn new things in a fun environment? This is what the Al-Khaadem Foundation is offering parents this school holidays. Organised by the youth for the youth, the Al-Khaadem Youth Camp is an annual event where the younger generation gets to escape to the outdoors and engage in exciting activities. This year, it will be held at the exotic Sungai Perak camp site, Kem Langbuana, which boasts a 400km-long river. Activities include kayaking and water games as well as jungle trekking, night-walks and flaming ball. Besides outdoor playtime,

there will also be characterbuilding programmes to instill good values and develop a sense of responsibility and capability. "There aren't many camps out there focussing on both spiritual and character development within the young. This is important at this day and age when integrity and moral values are needed to solve social problems that exist, and to develop capable and effective individuals within our society," said Al-Khaadem Youth president Imtiaz Mohd. Camp participants will be divided into groups which will compete to attain the Youth Camp 2011 grand prize. This will enhance leadership and role playing skills as well as to train participants in the concept of team build-

ing and strengthening bonds of togetherness outside the camp, Imtiaz said. The Al-Khaadem Youth Camp 2011 will run from Dec 7 to 11 and os open to all aged 12 and above. However, children below the required minimum age can still join as exceptions are made on a case to case basis. Camp activities and modules are organised and facilitated by experienced and trained members from the Al-Khaadem Youth, under the guidance and supervision of the foundation's founder, Ustaz Hussain Yee, himself. the commanding view it provides impressed many, including the former Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sir Hishamuddin Alam Shah, who first made the mansion his palace. Sometime before Merdeka in 1957, the federal government

bought over the palace and turned it into the official palace for the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman Tuanku Muhammad. Since then, it has been the abode for Malay sultans who took turns every five years to rule the country. The Istana Negara at Jalan Syed Putra, known as Lornie Road in those days, has 20 function rooms including 'balai mengadap' where dignitaries were received, guest rooms, banquet hall and the throne room Balairong Seri Utama that housed the royal dias. The throne room came much later, when the earlier coronations were held at Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman in Jalan Ampang. The Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, had the honour of going through the first coro-

nation ceremony at the palace in 1980. The smaller throne room — Bilik Singgahsana Kecil — was where the Agongs handed over appointment letters to governors, judges and diplomats. The new Istana Negara is set to see the coronation of the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong — Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah of Kedah — next month. The RM800 million palace, grand in design and bigger in size, is a fitting recognition to the unique constitutional monarchy system practiced successfully since independence. While the new palace will be the seat for future head of states, the old Istana Negara is expected to serve as the museum of royalty illustrating how the constitutional monarchy in the country evolved.

Taman Negara tour firm clears air on grouses A TRIP to Taman Negara in Pahang has turned into a stressful one for a group of friends recently. SASHIDARAN JAYARAMAN, a 26-year-old software engineer from Sentul, says he and two friends took up a full board and guided package with NKS Hotel & Travel Sdn Bhd. "Their KL staff told us to be at a hotel at 8am sharp for the 8.30am bus ride. Despite arriving at 7.45am, we waited until after 9am." He says they only left at 9.15am and reached the NKS Jerantut office at 12.15pm. "The driver was also smoking while we boarded the bus and the tobacco smell had spread throughout the bus." Upon arrival, SASHIDARAN says they were promised a two-way ferry transfer from Kuala Tembeling to Taman Negara and cave exploration after lunch. "As we would not be able to enjoy the ferry ride on a full stomach, we asked for a 30minute wait." He says they were later told only one ferry was available at 2pm and they had to choose between the boat ride or cave trip. "We should have been told this earlier. We already paid for the exploration and were keen on it, despite being offered a refund. We already missed out on one activity." SASHIDARAN says they complained to the NKS Jerantut office but were told the

director was away and could not compensate them as they had accepted the package from the Kuala Lumpur office. He says they then found out their local village hotel accommodation was inadequate for the three of them, adding the management only provided them with an extra mattress as the hotel was fully booked. "We were initially told we could choose rooms. They should have either reduced costs for the small room or given us separate ones." SASHIDARAN says they instead settled for the Abot Guest House and were assured it was newly-renovated and had hot water. "Instead, we got a room full of insects, windows that couldn't close properly and a frog in the toilet bowl. "We decided to pay an additional RM60 for another air-conditioned room." He says their first activity that night was at 8.30pm and NKS told them a representative would hand them the park entry permits and camera licences during dinner. "We waited, but no one came. Our guide told us the licence was not yet ready and would be provided once it was." SASHIDARAN says when they finally met with the NKS Jerantut director, he explained the KL office only contacted the hotel back-office staff for

the accommodations. "He then offered to compensate 50 per cent for the extra RM60 paid for the guest house. We refused." SASHIDARAN wants a full refund from the company. ● NKS HOTEL & TRAVEL SDN BHD director Melvin Ng clarifies the bus was delayed as it was caught in a bumper-to-bumper crawl in Kuala Lumpur. "However, our CCTV cameras recorded them arriving in Jerantut at 12.09pm." On the smoking bus driver claim, he says a cigarette butt was not found near his

seat. "It was a public bus and could have been left by anyone." Ng claims they delayed the cave exploration, scheduled between 1pm to 1.30pm, after lunch was served at 12.27pm, at SASHIDARAN's request. On the accommodation issue, he says action has been taken against their Kuala Lumpur staff for misleading the clients over it. "Although the rooms are satisfactory at flat rates, SASHIDARAN opted for cheaper ones. As the hotels are all run by locals, we can only suggest where they can stay.

"Only standard air-conditioned rooms rooms were newly-renovated with hot water facilities. Perhaps he misunderstood." He says they were informed rooms were inadequate for three people and were offered a bigger one, but SASHIDARAN was not willing to pay for it. On the complaint about insects and animals in the room, Ng explains it is a common occurrence at jungle resorts. "We are not responsible for infrastructure inconveniences, as we only run tours. We recommend he contact the local council or Tourism Ministry on this."

Online comments www.mmail.com.my Courting trouble (Nov 14) ● CITY Hall should just shut down all dirty eateries, especially roadside stalls. Many of the operators are not bothered about the cleanliness and hygiene of their surroundings, inviting cockroaches, rats and flies. This is why people get food poisoning after patronising such unclean and unhealthy eateries. — shaktiman

Return of the burger blues (Nov 10) ● TRY to manage these burger stalls in terms of cleanliness and orderliness instead of preventing them from doing business. — Horizon Crowded-out commuters (Nov 9) ● INSTEAD of addressing current issues, KTMB is hoping the arrival of

new coaches will erase the problems. I don't use the commuter service as I live in KL itself. From what I have read and understood, the problems are the pickpockets, overcrowding, chaotic queues and inefficient Touch n’ Go card system. All these need separate solutions and the new coaches are not the one. — Gurcharan Singh Kulim

Ng also apologises for not handing the group their park entry permits and camera licences due to a delay. "NKS Hotel & Travel has been the pioneering the Taman Negara tour operator service for more than 20 years. We are professional in carrying out tours for both local and overseas tourists. "We apologise for any inconvenience and will hopefully prevent this issue from recurring. When contacted, SASHIDARAN says he and friends want to highlight the matter with the Tourism Ministry.

Obama chides US economic rival for not playing by the rules PRESIDENT Barack Obama served notice yesterday the United States was fed up with China's trade and currency practices as he turned up the heat on America's biggest economic rival. "Enough's enough," Obama said bluntly at a closing news conference of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit where he scored a significant breakthrough in his push to create a pan-Pacific free trade zone and promote green technologies. Using some of his toughest language yet against China, Obama, a day after face-toface talks with President Hu Jintao, demanded China stop "gaming" the international system and create a level playing field for US and other

foreign businesses. "We're going to continue to be firm China operate by the same rules as everyone else," Obama told reporters after hosting the 21-nation APEC summit in his native Honolulu. "We don't want them taking advantage of the United States." China shot back that it refused to abide by international economic rules it had no part in writing. "First, we have to know whose rules we are talking about," Pang Sen, a deputy director-general at China's Foreign Ministry said. "If the rules are made collectively through agreement and China is a part of it, then China will abide by them. If rules are decided by one or

even several countries, China does not have the obligation to abide by that." Even as Obama issued the veiled threat of further punitive action against China, it was unclear how much of his tough rhetoric was, at least in part, political posturing aimed at economically weary US voters who will decide next November whether to give him a second term. Obama insisted that China allow its currency to rise faster in value, saying it was being kept artificially low and was hurting American companies and jobs. He said China, which often presents itself as a developing country, is now "grown up" and should act that way in global economic affairs. — Reuters

RUSSIA yesterday successfully resumed sending astronauts to the Inte r n at i on a l Sp a c e Station after a break of over five months forced by the crash of a Russian spaceship into Siberia. Two Russians and an American blasted off to the orbiting laborator y on a Soyuz-FG rocket, Russia's first manned mission since the failed launch of the unmanned Progress supply ship in August temporarily grounded its Soyuz rockets. The launch had originally been scheduled for Sept 22, and the delay had forced a wholesale rejig of the staffing of the space station. The morning launch of the Soyuz lit up the grey skies over Russia's Baikonur cosmodrome in the steppes of Kazakhstan, which were covered by an early fall of snow. High-profile race murder case opens in Britain TWO men went on trial in Britain yesterday for the murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence whose stabbing 18 years ago led to a major inquiry that concluded the police were "institutionally racist". The 18-year-old student was knifed to death at a bus stop in an unprovoked attack by a gang of white youths in Eltham, southeast London, in April 1993. Nobody has ever been convicted for his murder. Gary Dobson, 36, and David Norris, 35, both white men from south London, deny murdering the teenager. The high-profile trial is taking place at the Old

Bailey court in London and is expected to last two months. The hard-hitting report by William Macpherson, published in 1999, gave a damning assessment of the "institutional racism" within the Metropolitan police and policing in general. The report is regarded by many as a defining moment in British race relations and one of the key moments in the modern history of criminal justice. Allegations that Metropolitan police officers acted incompetently or that their judgement was obscured by racism soured race relations for years. — AFP

Timberlake enjoys Marine Ball

POP STAR Justin Timberlake says attending the Marine Corps Ball on Saturday was one of the most "moving evenings" of his life, reports the Times of India. The star was invited to attend the celebration in a YouTube video posted by Corporal Kelsey DeSantis. In a blog post on his website, he wrote: "I knew I would have an evening that I wouldn't forget ... Something I could tell my friends about. What I didn't know was how moved I would be by the whole experience. To all of you that serve every day for us ... Ensuring our freedom, I say: My deepest gratitude to you. Last night changed my life and I will never forget it."

'Love scenes embarrassing' ACTRESS Freida Pinto (pic) confessed nothing prepares her for "embarrassing" love scenes. According to Parade, even after five years in the showbiz, the 27-year-old Indian actress, who is currently dating her Slumdog Millionaire co-star Dev Patel, still finds love scenes to be the most awkward. "These kinds of things are always uncomfortable whenever you do it," the Daily Express quoted her as saying. "There is never a good time for these scenes that deal with intimacy. Honestly I don't mentally prepare myself. I just go in and do what I need to do. It's my job and I try to separate that from reality."

Beautiful people more productive

A NEW book written by an economics professor at the University of Texas-Austin concludes that beauty brings many real benefits. In Beauty Pays, Daniel S. Hamermesh notes beautiful people are likely to be happier, earn more money, get a bank loan with a lower interest rate and marry a good-looking and highly educated spouse, reports The Age. So, what defines beauty? A symmetrical face generally is considered beautiful, Hamermesh said. Other factors, such as expression

and "overall gestalt", are in the mix but are difficult to measure, he said. Hamermesh concludes better-looking employees are more productive, leading to higher sales and potentially higher profit. A n ot h e r s tu d y, to b e published in an issue of Psychological Science, found a CEO's facial structure can predict his company's financial performance. Earlier research by Elaine Wong found the higher the facial width-to-height ratio, the more likely people were to act unethically or lie.

Miller blasts 'Occupy' movement FRANK MILLER (pic) , the legenday comic artist behind Sin City, 300 and The Dark Knight Returns, unloaded on the Wall Street protesters in a recent blog post, and plenty of his fans are firing back. In a long statement posted on his website, titled "Anarchy," Miller said he has decided to say what others are "too polite" to say, reports the Atlantic Wire. "The 'Occupy' movement, whether displaying itself on Wall Street or in the streets

of Oakland (which has, with unspeakable cowardice, embraced it) is anything but an exercise of our blessed First Amendment. 'Occupy' is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness. These clowns can do nothing but harm America. "'Occupy' is nothing short of a clumsy, poorly-expressed attempt at anarchy, to the extent that the 'movement' — HAH!

Some 'movement', except if the word 'bowel' is attached — is anything more than an ugly fashion statement by a bunch of iPhone, iPad wielding spoiled brats who should stop getting in the way of working people and find jobs for themselves."

Learn a lesson from Job Title: Steve Jobs: A Biography Author: Walter Isaacson Publisher: Simon & Schuster Price: RM99.90 From the author of the bestselling biographies of Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein, this is the exclusive biography of Steve Jobs. Based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs conducted over two years — as well as interviews with more than 100 family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues — Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the rollercoaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionised six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing and digital

publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the 21st century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. But Jobs was driven by demons and could drive those around him to fury and despair. As his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple's hardware and software tended to be, they were part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership and values.

response to customers who conveyed feedback that they buy shoes for children whose feet are adult-sized, but the fashion, styling and pricing of adult shoes makes it challenging to find the right styles for these kids.

J.Lo has fling with new man Jennifer LOPEZ is reportedly dating dancer Casper Smart. The singerand-actress who split from her husband of seven years Marc Anthony in July has

enjoyed several romantic evenings out with Casper, although friends insist it isn’t serious. One pal told People magazine: “Yes, they are dating and having a good time. They’ve been getting more open with their flirting for weeks. “It’s a fun fling. It’s not meant to turn into anything more.”

Casper, who has appeared in Glee, Step Up 3D and How I Met Your Mother, joined J.Lo on Friday night at one of her concerts. He wrote on his Facebook page: “In Palo Alto Bout to do a show w/ Jennifer Lopez for some1s birthday. (sic)” Jennifer — who has threeyear-old twins, Max and Emme, with Marc — was re-

cently linked to actor Bradley Cooper and the pair were said to have gone on several dates. The 42-year-old beauty recently admitted she is an “eternal optimist” about romance, despite her marriage break-up, and is confident she will find love again. Jennifer — who has been married three times and had

high-profile relationships with P. Diddy and Ben Affleck — said: “I really wanted this family to work. That was my biggest dream, and I worked hard at it. We both did. Sometimes it doesn’t work and that’s sad. But I remain an eternal optimist about love. I believe in love. It’s still my biggest dream.” — Bang Showbiz

Bieber driven by designer cars

Dench admits her nerves are worsening Dame Judi Dench has “worse nerves” now than when she started acting 54 years ago. The 76-year-old actress who has starred in Notes on Scandal, Shakespeare in Love and a number of James Bond films, including Casino Royale and Tomorrow Never Dies, admits she “never” has confidence in her ability and always has to rely on a director. She said: “I have worse nerves now, 54 years after entering this business than when I started. I’m never confident about the work I do and I’m very, very reliant on a director. “Everything I do, there’s always something that jumps up and hits me in the eye.” Despite her nerves, the My Week With Marilyn actress who admits to being a “great prankster” on the set of her movies doesn’t ever want to quit acting because she thinks the learning process is far too important to leave behind. She added to The Observer magazine: “If I retire I think I should fall over. You’ve got to keep learning. I think everybody should take the time to recite two lines of something every day. I’ve also just taken up Sudoku — bloody difficult, isn’t it?” — Bang Showbiz

Justin Bieber has splashed out more than £100,000 (RM500,466) on a customised Range Rover. The 17-year-old singer is hoping to impress his girlfriend Selena Gomez with the purchase of the "Project Kahn" car, which has a sound system worth £50,000 (RM250,223), leather interior, modified paintwork and a Cosworth engine. A source told The Sun newspaper: “Justin loves his motors even though he’s barely old enough to drive. “His girlfriend Selena Gomez will be well impressed with his latest. It’s the business.” The Never Say Never hitmaker is set to get the vehicle shipped from Bradford, west Yorkshire, Northern England, where he purchased the motor from the Project Kahn operation — whose previous customers have included England soccer star Wayne Rooney and TV star Katie Price — to his Los Angeles home. He will add the motor to his fleet of vehicles, which

includes a Batman-themed customised Cadillac and a Ferrari. Last month, he was pulled over by police in Los Angeles in his Batmobile-inspired Cadillac after he reportedly cut off an officer. He was given a warning and allowed to carry on his way.

Earlier this year, the teen heartthrob was unhurt after being involved in a minor car crash when his Ferrari — which he is thought to have been driving alongside an unnamed passenger — collided into a Honda Civic at the Studio City area of Los Angeles. — Bang Showbiz

Fatherhood makes Pitt passionate about life

BIG BROOD: Pitt and Jolie and their extended family arriving at Haneda Airport, Tokyo, last week

Brad Pitt says fatherhood has made him more “passionate” about life. The actor — who raises six children, Maddox, 10, Pax, seven, Zahara, six, Shiloh, five, and three-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, with partner Angelina Jolie — wants to create films that will have a lasting impact on his kids since becoming a dad, because movies played such a big part of his life when he was younger. He said: “I am more

passionate now that I am a father. It has focused my mind on the kind of work I want to do. “I think of how movies affected me when I was younger, and how they’ve stayed with me ever since. “Now I want to make films the kids can see and that might stay with them. I want to make films they can be proud of.” The 47-year-old star admits his “shelf life” as an actor is coming to an end, but he still

wants to play a “grumpy old dude” in a movie one day. He added to Culture magazine: “I’m bothered less about whether the films I shoot make money. I just want them to have longevity. “We all have a shelf life, and mine is coming although there are a couple of things I’d still like to do. I am looking forward to playing a foulmouthed grumpy old dude one day, that’s for sure.” — Bang Showbiz

NAT IO NA L m i d f i e l d e r Kelvinder Singh (pic) is disappointed to miss out on the upcoming Champions Challenge tournament in S out h Af r ica later t his month. He, however, b elieves the national team is fully equipped to return with a good showing but will have to be wary of the potency of Argentina. "The boys are fit and have had a good rest after the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) and TNB Cup. We have been preparing well and will hopefully come good," said Kelvinder. "I was looking forward to this tournament but picked up an unfortunate shoulder injury in the league." Malaysia have been grouped with Argentina, Japan and Canada in Pool B. The 25-year-old KL Ho cke y Club (KLHC) player believes that the national hockey team is enjoying a purple patch currently, dating back to the final appearance at the

Guangzhou Asian Games last year. "In addition to that, the Project 2013 team won the Sultan of Johor Cup. It's a great step for the national hockey scene but we have to build on these successes," he added. Kelvinder was looking forward to the MHL season to impress national coach Tai Beng Hai after failing to shine during the fivematch series against Japan in August. However, he injured his shoulder at the end of the season and also had to miss the TNB Cup. He is undergoing physiotherapy and will not be travelling with the rest of the national players to South Africa on Saturday. Instead, he will be at Kelab Aman on Saturday for the Mainduab Sports Carvinal, where he is the organising chairman for hockey. Besides hockey, the other sports for the carnival are football, netball and futsal. The carnival is being organised by Kelab Belia Pudu Bersatu, the sports branch of Mainduab Gurdwara.

THE national divers continued their domination at the Jakabaring Aquatic Centre after claiming a third gold medal yesterday. In the women's 10m platform synchronised, Leong Mun Yee and Traisy Vivien Tukiet put on a superb performance to accumulate 306.66 points after five dives. In d on e s i a n p a i r S a r i Ambarwati and Dinasari Harimurti, claimed the silver medal with 268.62 points, while the bronze was won by Myanmar's pair of Sandar Nyut Soe and Mar Hnin Hay with 155.73 points. "Despite the absence of a tough challenge for us here, we gave 100 per cent. We did not look down on the other competitors and were still polishing our skills," said sea-

son campaigner Mun Yee. The gold medal is Mun Yee's second after winning the 3m springboard synchronised on Sunday, partnering Ng Yan Yee. As for Traisy Vivien, the gold medal was an achievement in only her second Games appearance. "At the last Sea Games in Laos, I won a bronze medal in the 10m platform individual event. I would like to dedicate my gold medal to my parents who have been supportive. "My parents wouldn't let me quit and wanted me to succeed like Bryan (Nickson Lomas)," said Traisy. She will now concentrate on the individual event scheduled for tomorrow. — Bernama

No-nonsense Scott Spurs midfielder not taking Euro 2012 place for granted

MANCHESTER CITY are set to challenge Arsenal for the signature of France international Yann M'Vila (pic). Arsene Wenger has been tracking the 21-year-old for a number of years and failed with a £20 million bid shortly before the transfer window closed. But according to Patrick Vieira, who now acts as Football Development Executive for high-flying Man City, manager Roberto Mancini is also interested in the defensive midfielder. "I think he could seize his opportunity in the French team. He seems to be level-headed," Vieira told Canal Plus. "I like the image he is showing. But I am sure City is not the only club attracted by him."

Manchester rivals in for Eriksen AJAX'S teenage sensation Christian Eriksen has emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United, putting the Red Devils in direct competition with neighbours City. Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson is apparently ready to bid more than £20 million to land Eriksen, who he believes could fill the gap left by the retirement of Paul Scholes. "United are hot on him. Trust me, they want him and £20 million is the price being bandied around," a source said. Eriksen will be familiar to British football fans following his outstanding performance for Denmark in a friendly against England in February and Scotland in August.

Toffees after US defender Shea EVERTON boss David Moyes is chasing American centreback Brek Shea as he looks to boost his squad with bargains. The Scot flew to France to watch highly-rated FC Dallas defender Shea in action for the US in an international friendly at the weekend, and is interested in recruiting him if the price is right. Moyes has a head start in American chases as he has keeper Tim Howard, while the Goodison chief would also like Landon Donovan to return on loan. However, he is after another central defender and after a decent performance against the French, Shea has put another tick in the box.

TOTTENHAM midfielder Scott Parker insists he has to maintain his current form to ensure he is in contention for England coach Fabio Capello's Euro 2012 squad. Parker was named Man-ofthe-Match for his performance in England's 1-0 win over world and European champions Spain at Wembley last Saturday. But his caution is understandable given it is only in the last few months that he has been at the forefront of England's plans. The stop-start nature of his international career is highlighted by the fact he won his first four caps under four different managers. But he started five of the last seven matches since impressing as a second-half substitute against Denmark in Copenhagen last February. When asked if he thought he was guaranteed to go to Poland and the Ukraine next year, Parker said: "Not really. Football has chucked up a lot

of surprises in my career. "There is no complacency. I realise how tough it is going to be. I need to retain my form. There are a lot of players who

will come back into the squad (Jack Wilshere and Steven Gerrard included). "Six months ago I wasn't even really involved."

Parker left the pitch to a standing ovation when substituted against Spain. "Eighteen months ago, I wouldn't have believed I would get the ovation I have got now against Spain. It was a massively proud moment for me. In one way, I have to pinch myself that I am going out representing my country," he said. "It was a moment I will always treasure, playing against the World Cup holders, and to get the result is even more pleasing." Parker, who moved to Spurs from West Ham during the summer, admits the earlier uncertainty over his future is a factor in his current fitness levels. "I've been struggling with cramp recently. I didn't have a good pre-season. It was all up in the air where I was going to be. I just think maybe not having the pre-season behind me means I will struggle during the late part of games." Parker, 31, believes England

can take confidence from stifling the threat of Spain but also sounded a note of caution ahead of the Euro 2012 finals. "We went in as underdogs and at times it was difficult. They played some quick stuff and you are up against arguably the best midfielders in the world. "The ball moves so quickly in midfield areas, and they are so comfortable on the ball which makes it all the harder. But you learn from those games. The games you win 5-0, you are not learning from. "We learnt a lot about ourselves and as a team. We limited them to very few chances and we took the result. Ultimately, we stuck together out there as a team and got the result. "But we need to put the win in perspective. We need to be realistic and it's a building process for us. We will always be confident going into a tournament but, we need to be realistic at the same time."

One last chance for RVP, says Fabregas

BARCELONA midfielder Cesc Fabregas believes Robin van Persie will spend the rest of his career at Arsenal if the Dutchman decides not to move on next summer. Van Persie has 18 months left on his contract at Emirates Stadium and Fabregas believes that, at 28, the Holland international realistically has only one more move in him.

"I don't know if they will keep him. It is his decision," Fabregas said of his former teammate. "At his age, if he wants to move, it will be his last chance. And if he wants to stay, he will stay and retire at Arsenal. We will see what he decides but he's been loyal to Arsenal for a few years. He is a key player, the

fans love him. "He is the role model of Arsenal — the star player — and they cannot afford to lose him. "He is having an amazing season. Hopefully, he will be fit for the whole season. Unfortunately when I was there, he never enjoyed a whole season without injury."

Fabregas himself is loving life at Barca and hit back at Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood, who suggested he would not get a game at Nou Camp. "Some people thought I wouldn't get in the team at Barca," said Fabregas. "Maybe they didn't believe in me too much. I speak to the boys at Arsenal.

"Arsenal gave me everything and I will never forget that. It will always be a special club. The fans have always been amazing to me. I only have amazing words to say about them. "It was a shame they started so badly but now they are back to winning ways and doing well," said the Spain international.

Storm delay just the ticket for Spaniard

GONZALO FERNANDEZCASTANO revealed he was so sure the Barclays Singapore Open would be held up by storms that he booked his plane home for late yesterday — more than a day after the scheduled finish. And the foresight proved just the ticket for the Spaniard who claimed the US$1 million (RM3.13m) first prize in an early morning playoff that was held up for some 17 hours by torrential downpour and lightning. "It's been different. I have played this tournament twice before. I knew what we were going to get," FernandezCastano said. "I booked my departure ticket for yesterday

night knowing the tournament was going into yesterday." It was the second Monday

finish in a row for the Singapore Open, which is notorious for weather delays, and followed a rain-plagued weekend at the US$6 million tournament. The Spaniard received some big slices of fortune when he shot a stunning 10 under second round on the Tanjong course — considered the easier of Singapore's dual layouts — before the event was cut to 54 holes to save time. And Fernandez-Castano, 31, admitted he had benefited from Sunday's lightning storms, which twice interrupted his sudden death playoff with Filipino Juvic Pagunsan and finally delayed it until yesterday.

"It was a tough morning and also a tough night because I did not get much sleep. It's probably the most nervous I have ever been on a golf course," he said. "It's a strange feeling. I've won four times on Tour in many playoffs but I've never been as nervous. I think the first suspension in the playoff helped me a bit." Fernandez-Castano's fourshot lead in the last round was gradually whittled down and he appeared to have blown his chance when he drove into the water on the par-five 18th. But he then bravely saved par to force the playoff. When the two-man face off finally got going on Monday,

he had his heart in his mouth when Pagunsan had a five-foot birdie putt for victory on the first extra hole. "I got lucky, I have to say. He had a very good putt on the first hole which he deserved to have holed," FernandezCastano said. "Fortunately for me, he didn't. But that's golf, playoffs are like that." How e v e r, Fe r n a n d e z Castano merited his luck after a back injury kept him out of golf for six months and left him fearing for his future. He has come roaring back to form with two top 10 finishes and a 12th in recent weeks, and now celebrates his fifth European Tour win — and his first in three years. — AFP

ITALIAN national team have pledged support to the fight against the mafia by training on a pitch confiscated from crime syndicate 'Ndrangheta. The session in Rizziconi was arranged by Libera, who coordinate groups trying to stop organised crime. "I invite the football federation to join our network of 1,600 associations without political colours," Libera president Luigi Ciotti (pic) said. Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said: "We will give future purpose to this day." Calabria's 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate is considered more powerful than the Sicilian mafia and have become one of the world's biggest cocaine traffickers. "It's the third time we've inaugurated this pitch," said Ciotti. "Either we really put ourselves to work for change, or it will all be in vain. Change starts with each one of us." Italy were training ahead of tomorrow's friendly international against Uruguay at Rome's Stadio Olimpico. Last Friday, they beat Poland 2-0 in Wroclaw with goals from Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli and Inter Milan's Giampaolo Pazzini. Meanwhile, Balotelli's adoptive father, Franco, revealed his pride following the striker's recent impressive display for Italy. ''Super Mario'' also received praise from coach Cesare Prandelli, "Mario phoned me straight after the game and his first question is always: ‘How did I play, dad?’ I replied: ‘This time I give you eight out of 10. Not for the goal, but because you played for the team. Well done,'" Franco told Gazzetta dello Sport. "Mario is urging me and my wife to come and see him in Rome (for the match against Uruguay). I am 82, so journeys are difficult for me, but I promised to visit him soon in Manchester. He’s earned it." Balotelli could well feature tomorrow against in the inform Uruguayans after his display against Poland.

'I'm no Messi!'

LIVERPOOL and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez is embarrassed by comparisons of him with Argentina and Barcelona wizard Lionel Messi. The 24-year-old, or El Pistolero, hammered all the goals for Uruguay in their convincing 4-0 home win over Chile in a South American World Cup qualifier encounter last Friday. Suarez received praise for his brilliance, some even comparing him to Messi, or ''The Flea''. However, the Liverpool favourite has been quick to play down any likeness with Messi. "Comparisons with Messi embarrass me," Suarez told El Pais. "It also makes me smile, but I feel the comparisons are just the reaction from the Uruguay fans as everything seems to be going well at the moment. "I am happy but we have to look at the work of the whole team as it is not just about one player." Suarez could feature for

his side when they meet Italy tomorrow (2.45am) in an international friendly, despite coming off in the previous match with some pain to his back. Meanwhile, another Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani believes he is similar to controversial Mario

Balotelli as he looks ahead to the match against Italy. The two strikers have been in fine form for their respective clubs Napoli and Manchester City, and more is expected when they face off in Rome's Stadio Olimpico. Balotelli was the protagonist during Italy's 2-0 win

over Poland in a friendly last Friday. Cavani can see the similarities with ''Super Mario'', but said Italy have lots of other players who can turn a game in their favour at any moment. "Italy have many great players in their team. I think Andrea Pirlo makes a difference while I am similar to Balotelli," Cavani told Sky Sports Italia. "We are modern strikers and I think Italian football is similar to English football. (City manager) Roberto Mancini asks of Balotelli what I am asked to do at Napoli." Staying with Italy, Cavani said he expects a tough clash tomorrow as the two sides seek a positive result. "Uruguay are different to Italy, but both teams have world class players and I am sure it will be a great game," he said. The Italians last beat Uruguay at the 1990 World Cup where the game ended 2-0.

'The Flea' nominated for Time's Person-of-the-Year BARCELONA superstar Lionel Messi is one of the nominees for Time magazine's Person-ofthe-Year. Messi, 24, is among the 32 candidates for the Person-ofthe-Year 2011. The list includes figures such as Steve Jobs, Angela Merkel, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Silvio Berlusconi, Kate Middleton and Nicolas Sarkozy. The final choice will be

announced next month. The magazine's website claimed Messi managed to create "a unanimous opinion amongst fans throughout the world" that he is "the best player of his generation''. Although the magazine points out Messi has yet to win the World Cup, it stresses that "he has won everything with his club Barca and is "on the way

to winning his third World Player-of-the-Year award'', whilst reminding its readers that he recently — in a Champions League game against Viktoria Plzen — chalked up his 200th goal with the Catalan giants. Time also commented that Messi "has taken the most popular sport in the world to a new commercial level of success, as shown by the fact that so many

north American children go to school in a Barça shirt''. Meanwhile, Messi believes fellow Argentina international midfielder Javier Pastore can excel at Paris St Germain following his summer move from Serie A club Palermo. The 22-year-old Pastore moved to Ligue 1 in a reported €42 million (RM180m) deal, and life in France has started

brightly for him, whose PSG side lead the championship race. Messi, now on international duty along with Pastore or El Flaco (The Thin One), hailed the former Palermo man and said moving to France was a good choice. "Pastore was wanted by a number of big clubs but PSG are building a great team now and Pastore has great qualities. I am sure he will progress at that club," Messi told Canal Football Club. "I think playing in France is difficult but this will help him." Messi and Pastore will have to play bigger roles for struggling Argentina in their tough away match against formidable Colombia in a World Cup South America qualifying match tomorrow (5am).

Mum’s the word Terry gagged by FA over racism allegations

JOHN TERRY was gagged by the Football Association (FA) yesterday to prevent the England captain answering any questions about allegations he racially abused QPR defender Anton Ferdinand in a recent Premier League match. The FA and London’s Metropolitan Police are investigating the incident. Terry, who has denied the claims, was asked to speak about the matter yesterday at a Press conference ahead of a friendly against Sweden, but the questions were blocked by a member of the FA’s media team. Terry would only speak about his current mood, saying: “I’m in a great state of mind and focused on training. From my point of view, nothing’s changed at all.” England skipper Terry was rested from last weekend’s 1-0 friendly win over Spain, although manager Fabio Capello insisted this had nothing to do with the racism allegations. Terry, due to play against Sweden at Wembley tomorrow, said: “I think the players have showed we’re united no matter what and put in a very good performance against Spain.” Midfielder Frank Lampard, a Chelsea teammate of Terry,

captained England on Saturday. The central defender said it was always possible he could be dropped. “I don’t feel undroppable. I’ve never thought that with England or Chelsea,” said Terry. “If my form’s not good enough the manager (Capello) is big enough to drop anyone, as we’ve seen. “Every game we are playing for our places,” the 30-yearold added.

“I’m in a great state of mind and focused on training. From my point of view, nothing’s changed at all.” Meanwhile, Capello insisted he had no qualms about Terry’s mood ahead of the Sweden match. “He’s here. He will be with us. He will be the captain,” Capello said. The Italian added he planned to make wholesale changes to his side for the Sweden match.

“There will be eight new players,” he explained. “They are two different games but the experience gained for these players is really important in order to improve for the next match against Holland or for the Euros.” Asked about young Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge’s possible England debut, Capello added: “One hundred per cent he will start on the bench. “All of the young players

who come from the U-21’s have been monitored for a long time. I spoke to Stuart (Pearce, England U-21 coach) and the players’ coaches and all of these people told me they are really, really good. “I checked on them too and have been happy with their performances and their personalities and the confidence they play with. It’s difficult to find such players with the confidence they showed against Spain.” — AFP

Germans to send Euro warning with win over Holland

GERMANY are eager to beat rivals Holland in tomorrow’s friendly and send a clear message to all fellow Euro 2012 contenders that they are ready for their first title since 1996, team manager Oliver Bierhoff (pic) has said. The Germans, who reached next year’s tournament with 10 wins from 10 qualifiers, will have goalkeeper Manuel Neuer back in the squad as well as strikers Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus after they recovered from injury. Coach Joachim Loew will

drop some of the changes he introduced for Friday’s mediocre 3-3 friendly draw in Ukraine, including a threeman defence that looked more than shaky. He is likely to start with Bundesliga top scorer Mario Gomez and Klose in a twopronged attack as part of a 4-4-2 system he has not used in two years. “This is an extremely serious game. We want to leave a sign that we can take on and beat the very best,” Bierhoff told reporters ahead of the game in Hamburg. “We want to finish the year

with a victory and beating the Dutch is always double the fun.” Three-time European champions Germany won their last major title at Euro 1996. Last year’s World Cup runners-up Holland, who enjoy a healthy and long-standing football rivalry with their neighbours, were jeered by their own fans after being held to a lacklustre 0-0 friendly draw by Switzerland on Friday. The Dutch, also through to Euro 2012, will be looking to improve on their per-

formance on Friday without key players Robin van Persie and Rafael van der Vaart. Arsenal captain van Per-

sie has been ruled out due to fatigue after playing 90 minutes against the Swiss. — Reuters
